Do not act like your One True Paleo™ is the be-all, end-all and is perfect for for every human on Earth. You should really not use the words "you need" here, unless they're followed by something like "to talk to your doctor". It's very unlikely that you know what the person you're replying to needs, and pretending otherwise can be confusing for people new to this world.

Please report:

Spam, harassment, people generally being dicks (including people acting like their Paleo™ is "correct" and others are wrong), posts that aren't relevant to paleo/primal. That sort of thing.

Please don't report:

Posts you disagree with, posts you don't like, posts that don't fit your version of paleo or are

THE MOST IMPORTANT THING is don't be afraid to experiment. If something is working well for you, don't worry if it isn't "strict paleo," because there's no such thing. Paleo is more of a framework than a set of rules.

If you're posting something kinda gross (Some of us do talk about poop from time to time), feel free to TMI tag it. It'll end up like this: gross thing. Code example below.

How do you feel about modifying paleo? Trying to figure out how to eat.

Background:
F40 from Sweden. I have had a bad gut for a long time, likely an undiagnosed IBD that I have mainly been able to keep somewhat at bay with fasting and to some extent cleaning up the diet. I feel it is hard to fully let go of the old though. Drinks, traditional food, various dairy products etc. But currently aiming to do better. I am barely within normal BMI but I need to drop a few kg visceral fat. I have tried paleo in the past but felt a bit too limited and at least at the time I definitely did not have the time and energy to do all that cooking.

I feel that Paleo has a lot of good points but may not be the only good diet. For instance Valter Longo´s modified pescatarian mediterranian diet, or newer research on how we are affected by our much more recent ancestors, so more prone to tolerate certain regional foods. I think we probably tolerate milk products a bit better on average in scandinavia for instance (where I live), peas over other imported legumes, 'everyone' has been eating potatoes for quite some time, as a few examples.

I am very curious though to hear if there are any good enough points for avoiding certain foods, especially some few popular very nutritious foods before I decide on a path. Would you still call it paleo with these? Or strongly object to something on the list?

* Oats (gluten free)
* Full grain rice (rarely due to arsin)
* Peas, both yellow and green
* Lentils (my stomach does get gassy from them though, so not too much/often)
* Potatoes
* Basically all fruits, nuts and veggies
* Xanthan gum

Follow-up question;

What are your standard foods you prep that you feel you need and can´t just go buy pre-made? How much time do you spend per week on cooking/prepping?
I would love to have my own sets of broths, granola, nut milk/-yoghurt etc but it seems very time consuming while also cooking all the meals more or less.?

Any insights into addressing kidney disease with paleo?

Has anyone had success reversing kidney disease markers (like CKD) with dietary adjustments? Ex. Lowering carbs, or shifting to nut butters or cheeses?

Easy go to meal recommendations?

I first heard about egg roll in a bowl on this subreddit and I've been making it once a week. It was a great change of pace from my normal arsenal of "go to" recipes. I'm looking to expand my horizons even more so I figured I'd ask y'all to share your fave easy "go to" recipes. 😊

Identify as a man with orthorexia and want to share your experiences?

Hello!

My name is Kristi Nielson and I’m a research student at Lancaster University. I am posting here to invite eligible participants to be involved in a study I’m conducting on orthorexia nervosa (ON) or obsessive healthy eating. Orthorexia is defined here as an unhealthy obsession with healthy eating, to the point where it negatively impacted someone's life (e.g., emotionally, physically, socially, etc.). Specifically, I am interested in the lived experience of ON among individuals who identify as men that live in the U.S. The purpose of my research is to explore what men believe led to their experience with orthorexia, as well as what they think currently maintains it.

You’re eligible if:

· You identify with orthorexia nervosa or obsessive healthy eating, in which this phenomenon has negatively impacted your life (e.g., physically, emotionally, socially)

· You identify as a man

· You are > 18 years old

· You reside in the U.S.

· You are able to speak English

What is being asked of you? If you meet the above criteria and want to participate, you will be asked to partake in an online interview with me for approximately 60 minutes.

Additionally, if you know anyone who may be interested in taking part in this study, please feel free to pass along my email (k.nielson@lancaster.ac.uk).

For more information, please contact me directly at k.nielson@lancaster.ac.uk. Please DO NOT reply directly to this forum post.

Thank you!

Is frying eggs in butter less healthy than scrambled eggs using the same amount of butter?

Assuming the ingredients are exactly the same proportion.

Fried eggs are a bit simpler for me so I’m wondering if that cooking method is better/worse from a nutritional value. I know this sub eats a lot of butter and eggs so wondering if anyone knows. Thanks!

Still having diarrhea 30+ days in?

This is not my first time going paleo, and I don’t know if I had this problem the other times, but at first things were great in the bathroom department, now they are quite opposite.

My daily diet consists of a veggie and chicken breakfast sausage scramble (on an egg white wrap), lunch might be a chicken sausage hot dog (Aidells) or if I’m still full from breakfast I will just have an almond flour “cookie” (paleo baking I make myself) and an olipop. Dinner might be a burger bowl, some sort of taco in a Siete wrap, or if I had a late lunch, just a little snack.

Please don’t let it be the Olipop. I used to drink Kefir like it was going out of style and this is my new crutch.

90% of my food is organic. I am on paleo due to autoimmune diseases and ate pretty clean before this due to my bodies complete intolerance of most processed foods. The only thing I’ve really removed from my diet I was doing previously is wheat and dairy. I was already off sugar, oils, junk foods, etc.

Least processed butter alternatives

I am trying to cut out seed oils and unfortunately most alternative butters seem to be made from seed oils. I got a ghee/coconut oil blend and tried that yesterday but am having intestinal pain today. So, although I don't have an allergy I seem to be intolerant enough that a small amount of ghee still hurts me.

Is lard a reasonable option? What else?

Jobs relating to Paleoscience

Hey all! I've been considering going to Uni as I have a passion for prehistory, unfortunately the only kinda subject i can do is a Minor in Paleosciences. I also love Genetics so that's what id major. However I am a little bit concerned, I don't want to spend all that money on going to uni only to end up in a retail job because there's no jobs that readily require that knowledge. So my question is what kinda jobs could I get with those degrees and would it be worth it to get those degrees? Is there a job market for them? I live in Sydney, Australia if that helps.

Hormone Balancing/Disruption?

Hi All,

I'll start by saying I plan to mention menstruating/PMS/female hormones below so if you are sensitive to that topic, please click out. Thanks!

I was introduced to Paleo back in 2013ish and kept up with the diet changes to lose and maintain about 50lbs when I was a young adult in college. After about a year I kinda went off the rails and well, spiraled out of control with food and weight gain over the years. I'm now almost 33 and have given birth to two beautiful children, despite being the heaviest I have ever been in my life. I know I need to make a change for myself and for my children who are just now as toddlers learning good eating habits from myself and my husband. I know paleo works very well for my body as I have seen the results first hand, particularly in regards to reducing pain from inflammation.

I started back up on Paleo after a come to Jesus moment about 2.5 months ago. It's been great, I've lost some weight, my aches and pains are subsiding, and I've been able to do HIIT workouts daily for the last two weeks. But man, are the pre-ovulation hormones giving me a run for my money. Is this normal? I searched the sub and have seen things about cycles being earlier or later for some women, but what about when you're entering your fertile window? The few days leading up to ovulation are filled with almost rage at just about anything (incredibly difficult to remain calm with my children, who heaven bless them must ask me a million and three questions a day plus all the other lovely things children 3 and under do). I have noticed that during this time of the month I am absolutely more irritable and impatient, even more so than when menstruating, but this seems crazy. Is detoxing off sugar likely the cause? The last two cycles have been just real horrendous and this is the only change in my life. While I haven't had any bloodwork done I do suspect I might have some hormone imbalance, but I can't be certain for sure. Any insights?

Thank you in advance!

Is it just me, or did Primal Kitchen products use to taste better?

About 6/7 years ago, when I was first introduced to the brand, I was crazy for their thousand island, ranch, bbq sauces and mayos in all flavors. I don’t know what’s happened but now I get the weirdest aftertaste after tasting the mayos. The dressings separate and get oily or super thick and can’t pour. And they got rid of the thousand island, dang it!

Incomplete BMs

I eat a high meat diet with No Gluten, Dairy, Eggs, Nuts.

Mostly beef, rarely chicken, and I eat a good amount of Sardines as of recently and Salmon occasionally.

Main carb source is sweet potato, regular sometimes and plantain.

I can tolerate some fruits like blackberries, blueberries, peach / plum but apples and shit blow me up, and too many gives me acne.

I usually eat twice a day, it’ll consist of.

1LBGround beef (each time) with a lot of sweet potato dressed in some olive oil, recently no fruits, Ill have carrot a lot and sardines (those are like snacks) and some other food I listed above.

My issue is loose bowels… Did lions diet to clear skin issues and it helped me cut out a lot of stuff, but ever since then my gut hasn’t returned to forming a big bowel movement. I’ve had Incomplete bowel movements, ie; having to go multiple times within an hour and i don’t feel empty still or any relief.

Any suggestions? I’ve tried lowering the meat and it doesn’t really help, too low fat causes more issues than too high fat, I get skin issues if I eat too high GI foods without protein and fat, anything I listed above I don’t eat because of acne. I can introduce more vegetables for sure as I bet most wouldn’t give me acne, but I in-tolerate a lot of things like I suspect I have fructose-malabsorption because avoiding things on those list calm my stomach.

It’s mostly just the morning I feel like I gotta go to the bathroom, multiple small poo, no relief.

Fairlife protein drink

Hello all! I’m super new to the paleo diet and I’m easing my way into it. Does anybody here drink the fairlife protein drinks? There’s milk in it, but it’s lactose free. So I’m kind of confused if it’s paleo or not.

0 effort paleo/Anti-inflammatory Meals?

I have hashimotos and have had a big decrease in inflammation (skin, joints, bloating) cutting out dairy and gluten. I also have three little kids who hate my cooking even before the dietary changes. They are low gluten for adhd and totally content with grass-fed hotdogs and cauliflower pizza. I was a scratch cook before this but from a big Italian family and I just don't feel like I know how to cook anymore with the dietary changes and don't have the energy or motivation to cook from scratch for just my husband and myself. What are everyone's o effort paleo/anti inflammatory meals on rotation? Thanks!

How long until the cravings weaken?

I finally made it 8 or so days binge free and this is a record number for me. But the cravings are always severely strong in the background. I know cravings will always be there but how long until they are not as bad? Doing paleo right now?

Teeth sensitivity/pain going away

Hi! I just wanted to share this amazing experience I’m having only a few days on paleo. My teeth have been sensitive and somewhat hurting (almost like a pinch) on and off for weeks. I read online that going keto/carnivore is the best way to prevent, possibly reverse cavities. Idk if I even had tooth decay but definitely something didn’t feel right. So I wanted to try bc I would drink sugary drinks several times a day and eat whatever junk food I craved.

Well I’m happy to say that it’s gone going paleo. I don’t eat fruit tho. Mostly meat and vegetables only with sweet potatoes.

Idk if I’m speaking too soon but I’m just really happy bc my teeth really worry me.

What's with the negative press Paleo gets?

I'm looking into going on a Paleo diet; in my culture we eat beans and grains with EVERY meal along with meat, veggies are cooked with the beans, like a stew with carrots, potatoes, onions, celery etc.

I have noticed however after eating like this I have a very bad time the next day and I'm in and out of the bathroom with stomach cramps, I think I have a sensitivity to such a high fiber diet, because when I eat lets say chicken with asparagus and potatoes, I feel fantastic.

I'm also very lactose intolerant, goats milk is about all I can handle, so I thought Paleo would work well for me. I do have a family to feed so I'd probably still give the kids grains and legumes, but as for myself I feel like I would benefit from a Paleo diet, but online I read the problem with Paleo is it lacks in certain nutrients and is too low in fiber 🤨 which I don't understand if you can still eat fruits and veggies.

Can someone enlighten me? Is it really much higher in saturated fats? And that much lower in nutrients and fiber?? Why all the bad press?

How Often Do You Mix in Non-paleo

I have been going pretty strict for the past 4-5 months. Movie popcorn and corn tortilla my two vices I have enjoyed a few times. Been feeling so much better.

It seems silly that I would feel guilty for "breaking" off here or there. Wondering if this common thing others go through and how often others deviate or feel this way.

Office snacks and getting back on the wagon

For the first three months of this year, I did really well on a no sugar/keto/paleo type diet. (The main goal was no sugar, which removes most carbs/grains by default). But my routine got messed up. I also got super disregilatef just in general and fell back into old habits and have been stuck in this cycle of discouragement and binging. So I want to get back to it, and one of my main weaknesses is snacking.

My appetite has always been weird, and I never know if I’m going to be super hungry or feel sick at the thought of food, so meal-prepping is a bit complicated. I’ve always coped with this by having easy snacks that I don’t have to put a lot of forward thought to. For example, in my office drawer I usually kept packets of instant plain oatmeal, or shelf-stable fruit cups, sweet potato chips, etc. That doesn’t really align with the diet I want now, and I’ve had trouble finding substitutes. So when a craving hits and I’m desperate, the closest thing to me is my coworker’s stupid candy dish (and he gets gooood candy).

Willpower is a totally separate issue here, I know I know I know. There are certainly bigger things at play, but I’m trying to find small steps I can take.

So, any recs on good snacks I can keep in my office drawer for the random days that my hunger is high or I have cravings?

And any encouragement/advice for getting back on the wagon after being stuck in a cycle?

New to this diet, what is this about?

Hey, so I just heard about this kind of diet. It seems like a neat concept to eat natural foods that our ancestors used to eat. But can someone explain to me what the fuss is about? Is it really such a great diet? Should I try it? What are the benefits? Would really appreciate your insights.
