Rescued this baby last year during a windstorm. Fell out of the nest in a tall oak tree right on the side of a road. Drove him 45 minutes to the nearest rehabber (Tri County Wildlife in Jackson, Ca). He was released within 10 miles of where I found him once he was old enough.

I'm practicing color pencil to get out of my art comfort zone.

Vintage and antique owl miscellany.
his name is goku
This is in a tree in a small suburban front yard right next to a heavily-traveled sidewalk -- it's a secondary street with a lot of automobile traffic, where lots of commuters, students, exercisers, and dog-walkers pass by. We're talking small front yards, and the tree is maybe a 25' Bradford pear that basically touches two houses (it's my neighbors, also touches mine).
The owl itself is, I think, one that was hanging out for a bit in my backyard, and I thought it was a barred owl, but my understanding is they look for cavities in dead trees. This guy seems to be building an assortment of giant stick nests all over this not-very-large tree. Like there's a big messy one and a few rough drafts, looks like, plus another rough draft in a crabapple tree right next to the street. Owl's just hanging out in the tree.
What up with this guy? What kind of owl, and why this inauspicious spot?
eta: I've decided his name is Hector.
There is a pair of Barred Owls in my neighborhood that I hear all the time and even will occasionally see in my peripheral vision flying away and I want to get a closer or at least a longer look at them. I absolutely adore owls but these two have been particularly elusive. Anyone have any ideas or suggestions?
I was just running in a quiet Portland, OR neighborhood in the dark but with pretty bright lights on me and suddenly I felt something scratch my head from behind. I quickly turned around and saw a big bird fly up to the power line. I shined my head lamp at it and surely enough, it was an owl! Why would an owl do that?? Surely, it knew I was too big to be prey?
Ftr surprisingly I’m perfectly fine. They didn’t dig their nails in at all.
