Ezdeth

Her self obsessed nature really unsettled me but also

Do you think she chose the name from Esdeath from Akame ga Kill! ? In the show this character is a sadist who lacked empathy for people who she deemed weak, was literally a psychopath too.

Also kind of unsettled me that Ezdeth kept referring to Paul as “my victim”

I hope she isn’t out any time soon but bless Paul’s mother for being so forgiving.

Higinio Gonzales

Just binge watched season 5 and something has stuck with me and left me with such a horrible sense of dread.

When Higino comes back a few months later to answer more questions, I noticed something. You only see a glimpse of the police statement but his words seem to be twisted?

It says something along the lines of “no it was empty apart from one bullet” it flashes on the screen for a split second but the person reading it misses the part were higinio was still saying the chamber was empty and has instead made him believe that he knew it wasn’t empty all along.

Did anyone else notice this? I can’t get it out of my brain and I feel really…sad that he’s essentially been gaslit?

Edit: just to add that it seems in the statement he was saying “it was empty but obviously not because of that one bullet”

Are most the people interviewed liars or is it edited a certain way?

I’ve been watching a lot of the episodes recently and there’s always the twist of what the killer says happened vs what actually happened. I’m aware that some of these people will try and manipulate the situation / may genuinely misremember it and find it easier to believe their truth etc

However it always seems to be the case that they all leave out hugely important details of what occurred which are later revealed by the detective or family members who highlight inconsistencies. It had me wondering whether part of this is due to editing as a means to create a better story line where it appears two sides of the story are revealed or whether the killers 99.9% of the time are massively lying about the events which unfolded

The only person I recall watching who’s story seemed to be believable even after the detective relayed further details was Jema Donahue from ‘A Mothers Love’ - everyone else seems to have an entirely different story of how their crime played out - any reasons as to why?

are there any other shows like this that follow the same format/quality?

this series is incredibly well done, it pulls you in, it tugs on your heart and mind, and i just can't get enough of it, nor have i ever found anything else like it. the people behind this deserve a lot more exposure/recognition. it is superbly edited and well made.

does anybody have anything thats as effective as this? there are 100's of crime shows out there, but the majority of them are bland/generic. I AM A KILLER is the opposite.

i hope they never stop making these.

the only other show i can recommend that is very close to being it is Prosecuting Evil with Kelly Siegler.

could you recommend me anything?

thank you 🙏

How to suggest a prisoner.

I wonder how to contact Netflix to make a suggestion for a prisoner to interview. My father is in prison for murdering his boss. He's been doing great things in prison and I feel like it could be a good story to add to the Netflix series.

The threshold of Remorse required in the words and language when talking about your crime

I just finished s5e4, but it has bothered me in other episodes as well. And maybe my frustration says something about me and maybe I have anti-social tendencies or something.

For me, there's a difference between people who diminish their role or try to re-write history, manipulate and lie AND people that state what happened and then mostly focus on their life, upbringing, life in prison, the changes that they have made. I don't see it as a RED FLAG that someone mostly talks about their life and their progress and don't tear up and lament half the time about the possible consequences and pain the victims family might have and could have endured for the last 20 years.

No amount of tears and lamentation are going to bring the guy back. And one might feel like there are no words to express and make people feel like better about their loss.

I just didn't see Ezdeths testimony as "Me, Me, Me, Me... ". They very clearly described what they thought happened and why. And there's just nothing more that needs to be said about it.

I guess it hit close to home because I've been accused of being too "me, me, me" (not in a murder case or anything close to it), when I clearly stated at the start that my actions were wrong, what was the reason and cause, and I moved onto what I will do as further steps to repair damage and my further action plan in similar situations.

Heartbreaking

Maybe it’s just me, but watching this show I get so heartbroken at times hearing these stories. It’s not just the heinous crimes committed I feel so much hurt for the victims, their story and their families…. However, I feel a lot of empty for the murderer at times too- some of these people, you hear them say things like they’ve never known love, born to parents who didn’t want them, or parents that abused or didn’t care for them, or even a system they were placed in that did not listen to or believe them, placed in more places where abuse was lurking behind closed doors, its failure after failure.

I’m not saying these things should drive anyone to murder or any crime, but take into consideration the adversities they are born into, it’s almost like they had no shot from the very beginning. It is so hard to listen to the things people have done to them just as children- like in the case of David Barnett.

In regards to Danielle’s story. (Jamal)

I posted this as a response somewhere else but figured I’d share with everyone else too.

I’ll tell you how I know he’s lying. At the beginning when he told his story: He said that he heard/saw the cops coming so he panicked and ran. At this point I actually believed him too… because my own nephew accidentally shot and killed someone when he was 15 messing around with a gun. (The kids were playing Russian roulette and didn’t know the gun was loaded.) He also panicked and ran, HID the gun in a field, and then went about his evening attending church with his gf. So I can believe this does happen. When I asked him about it later… WHY did you run? WHY didn’t you get help? And I did this multiple times, because I couldn’t comprehend why he would run if it was an accident. His answer was always the same. I was scared, I was so scared and I didn’t know what to do. There were also several other kids at the park who witnessed the shooting and ran as well; saying nothing until the cops eventually came to them. You can run away after going through/witnessing something traumatic like that and simply try to forget about it - out of sheer fear and frankly… being traumatized.

However, later when Jamel was asked “Why didn’t you call a tip line so the cops would show up and your daughter would've been taken care of?” Or something like that. He says: Yeah I guess I should’ve called a tip line. (This is him feigning accountability/being manipulative btw.)

So wait, before you ran because you panicked when you heard the cops? Why wasn’t the answer… I didn’t think I needed to call a tip line, cause I thought the cops were already there. (His story from the beginning)

He’s lying. When you lie, you forget the lies you’ve told.

*For those that are curious. Due to multiple witnesses at the park who saw the shooting my nephew was involved in. (All saying they were playing and it was an accident.) My nephew was charged with manslaughter, did one year in juvenile prison and will be on parole til about his mid 20s.

Edit: Mispelling of Jamel's name. I cant change it in the title though.

Shoulda been a two part

The one hour episode barely scratches the surface. Shoulda been two. didn't she have a lawyer for the re-trial? Who in their right mind would advise her to the guilty plea she made? And not a single one of her family members spoke for her. Sad. Hard as it is to feel bad for someone who was involved in such a horrrible act... she kind of warrants sympathy.

Rewatching Victoria Smith

I 100% believe that her sister coached the hell out of her for the second interview. First interview, she admitted to killing Chris, but suddenly, it’s “can’t tell you, sorry”.

If her sister was that concerned over her sister’s mental capacity, shouldn’t she have been there for the first interview?

Now, whether she actually killed Chris, who knows. It’s very possible that Kenny killed Chris and Vicky is taking the fall for her son.

But I doubt it.

I just think it’s hella fishy that Betty suddenly had an interest in her sisters interviews.

S5E4 - Ezdeth Highly

I'm conflicted. She admits her crime and provides some context. It definitely feels like she had a rougher childhood and wasn't forthcoming about all the trauma that occurred earlier in her life. I think anger/mental illness played a part in the crime and she doesn't use the same "key language" that would trigger emotions in people listening to her story. I think she was right that if she wants to convince a parole board to let her go, she's going to need to learn the "fancy words" she mentioned.

But I'm not buying antisocial personality disorder. Psychologists and mental health professionals will look at 1 person and come up with completely different diagnoses. The accuracy in diagnosing mental illness is very low. She shows remorse for her actions, so she likely doesn't have antisocial. We didn't see any superiority complex. She didn't act like her life was more important than the victim's family's lives. I think her impulsivity or disregard for others stems from her ability to think clearly when she is upset or angry. She's not thinking through the impact of her actions, she's just acting purely off of emotion.

Nonetheless, I think the criminal justice system can be harsh and 60 years is a long time. As long as she has shown rehabilitation and is no longer an alcoholic, I think she should be released on parole.

Unpopular Opinion: Jamel Hatcher

I believe him when he says the murder was accidental.

I think he’s downplaying his abuse of Danielle when they were together and I don’t think he loved her as much as he claims. But, whatever happened that night, I believe that he did not intend to kill Danielle.

I don’t think it’s a very wild scenario for someone to accidentally kill a person and then try to run and hide. E.g. Hit & run. Sadly it happens a lot more than is reported in the media. Not a justification for him, just an observation from me that running & hiding doesn’t prove intent to kill.

Conclusion: There’s something insincere about Jamel when he speaks and his relationship with Janae gives me the ick but I think Danielle’s murder was accidental.

Chyanne biological father?

Chyanne looks nothing like Hatcher, could it be that she isn’t his biological daughter? Her parents both had light skin. The mother looks 1/4 black and the father 1/2 black and yet she looks full black. Couple this with the fact Danielle wanted to leave the relationship when she was only a few weeks old. Is there more to the story? Am I insane for thinking this?

Sims Family

So I am watching the Lost Innocence episode and I’m not sure I understand? Did his grandmother sexually abuse him or did she not? It seems like a lot of hearsay and I am not sure what to believe.

S5E3 : HIGINIO GONZALEZ

Hello everyone : I've never felt so convinced of a perpetrator's remorse as I do in this case. Environmental factors, though not an excuse, greatly impact one's development. This individual's background significantly contributed to who he is today. His actions were inexcusable, and of course my sympathy lies with Eric and his family. However, witnessing his genuine remorse and progress, I believe he merits consideration for a sentence less severe than life imprisonment. His transformation suggests potential for redemption. This may be an unconventional perspective, but I wish for both families to find peace, healing, and justice.

Am I the only one who finds it so wrong and weird that several people said they don't believe that Christian was SA'd by his grandmother? The woman who knew he experienced something like that already with an ex boyfriend of his mother suddenly doesn't believe that his grandmother could've done the same?

I mean ofc we don't know what happened, but I think it's just weird to just say you don't believe it. Also the daughter of Christian's grandmother saying "he's lying, she would never do such things" is so f***ing common to say for friends and family of abusers 🤮

You have no idea what a person can do behind closed doors, even if they were never weird to you, they can very much make life for others a living hell and it just makes me sick to always hear people say "I know them, they'd never do something like that!" You don't know sh*t.

racists?????

why am i seeing so much racism in this sub?????? i swear some of you only watch this shot TO BE RACIST. like ive seen shit about “black people” doing this or “she must’ve cheated and he must’ve cheated because his daughter is darker than him” idk if yall don’t understand genetics or you’re just using this as an opportunity to be racist and make generalizations but that shit is not cool at all bro. extremely fucking disrespectful to people that were victims and the offenders. just because they’re in prison for murder doesn’t mean you can make racist comments about them. those two things do not equate. they’re still a person, be respectful. what the fuck.

This person is manipulative and trying to invoke empathy to get away with murder. Never took accountability for what was done. Said “I’m sorry, BUT”. There is no but when it comes to what you did.

Is Missoula the murder capital of the US??

I watch a LOT of true crime docs and listen to even more podcasts/read a ton of books and I’m not even joking when I say that Missoula, MT seems to host an inordinate ratio of murderers per capita/visitor compared to even proper metropolitan cities like NYC or LA. I mean, the place only has 75k residents yet I’ve lost count of the number of times I see or hear Missoula as the location of a grisly murder or three, including in this latest series of IAAK.

I get that prison access differs from state to state so clearly the programme producers know that Montana is pretty open to having its prisoners interviewed but even so, Missoula is Murder Central! What’s going in that place? Anyone from Missoula on here?

S5E1: Additional Charges?

I just finished this episode and was thoroughly disgusted. Even if you believe (I don't) that the shooting was an accident, why were there no additional charges for abandoning the baby? I'm not a lawyer, but I would think that should be some kind of charge that carries a stiff penalty. I'm just stuck on how horrible it was to leave the baby like that.

This guy knowingly left a 3 week old baby, who needed to be fed every 2-3 hours, stuck in a bouncy seat, next to the rotting corpse of its mother, and didn't notify anyone. He left the baby to die a horrible death.

The only reason the baby survived was because the victim's family came looking. The baby would have died too otherwise.

He was running around thinking of how to cover his crime, thinking of alibis, having sex with another woman, etc. while his 3 week old baby was dying.

Absolutely sickening. I'm assuming he "was high and didn't remember the baby" or "was a selfish kid, right?" although he sure remembers every detail about how much of an accident it was in shooting the young lady.

Does anyone know the statute of limitations or what charges that could bring? Forget early release - I personally believe this guy should have been sentenced to life without parole for the shooting, but maybe the state couldn't prove harsher charges.

What about adding cruelty to children or something like that, to be run consecutively to his initial charge?

Gary Black

This episode is a bit unhinged. Starting with Gary himself I find it laughable that he has created this almost “movie” like scene when he tells the events the led to him killing Jason almost making himself seem like some type of hero. He feels no remorse at all. I also believe his motive was race as simple as that. His lawyer saying he deserves “compassion” is also laughable when he literally has shown anything but that specially towards his victims family. Jason’s mom saying she watched him take his first and last breath was so sad. I think he deserves every bit of his sentence. Him thinking he deserves parole highlights how delusional and dangerous he is.

Higino was the only one who didnt keep pushing his BS

I have to tell it was surprising and very respectable that unlike many convicted killers in this or many other shows he owned up to his mistake. And once he was presented with the facts about the bullet from his own testimony he didnt try to deny it. I feel like the cop was right by saying he was feeling so guilty that he made himself believe he couldnt have done that. I truly believed that he crushed down after facing this fact again. How his brother turned around by his influance and became an honest man, shows a lot. Also he admitted his mom turned him in and he didnt try to seem like the bigger person. (Strong contrast to the first guy who killed his gf but mostly talked abot himself. He made me feel like his an alfa male podcaster….) I truly hope he can be rehabilitated and given a new chance

Season 5: Mak Whitford was quite unique

The ending took me completely off guard 😂 EVERYONE in this show, and that includes this crazy bastard James Robinson from season 1 and both the crazies with hare triggers from this season, Rex and Ezdeth, overall EVERYONE was granted a second interview except Mak Whitford.

I never even thought about it being denied because of bad behavior but ofc it makes perfect sense. In retrospect I gotta say now, I'm impressed everybody else did make it to their second interview lol.

Mak actually seemed more on the normal side of things to me. I was surprised to hear what a difficult inmate he was from one of his former prison guards.

I didn't really believe the hate crime angle anyway but this kinda proves that he was probably the aggressor that night.

Who else could you have seen crapping out for bad behavior?

I liked the show better when the inmates didn't lie to further their agenda. Enough of the liars. Watching somebody tell their story for 20 minutes only to find out that they're lying is nonsense. It's not what the show is supposed to be about.
