I've watched murder mountain for the 2nd or 3rd time.
Anyone notice Garrett throwing gang signs in the 2nd episode where they show alot of photos with his friends?
Probably not significant, but I noticed and it had no mention in the show.
I have zero care about these people (after watching the complete show)-
1- If they really farm that much to supply the country- why don't they care about all the crime they lay waste in communities? (Most likely because these "farmers" are white and the people in jail are mostly black)
2- If it's so illegal, why don't cops/FBI just go in and bust the places up? (Probably because they are white and pay off the cops)
3- Boo Hoo that weed dropped from 5,000$ a pound to 500$ a pound. If you grew 100 pounds of weed, you made 1/2 million dollars. Most seem like they grew hundreds of pounds- which they made millions- a year.
4- Legal things take money to register- AWE- join the club of everyone else. You don't like outsiders doing illegal stuff in your neighborhood- AWE- then register your business.
It's shows like this that proves white privilege exist- as much as I hate that term.
It's been explained before and again, that while Humboldt tops the state in missing person reports, it also tops the state in found people.
There are many normal explanations for it, which I won't go into again, but this recent news made me think of this sub.
An Oregon woman and her boyfriend went missing. Then their car turned up abandoned in southern Humboldt. Whaddya know? They were found alive today unaware that they were reported missing.
The only variation on this story is that the couple didn't tell anyone they were headed to Humboldt. If they had, tuh dah! the Humboldt sheriff would have added another missing person report to the heap just because a loved one thought Humboldt was the wandering person's final destination.
I'm not saying the ill events depicted in the documentary aren't serious or real, but the reputation of the region is ridiculously overblown.
Maybe the context made me misunderstand, but I thought it was hilarious how the private investigator lady seemed to refer to Facebook and Instagram as her "databases". I guess they can loosely be called that, but it's funny to hear such a formal term for platforms where people basically go to shitpost their life.
Supposedly only 2 people saw Garrett's murder. The murderer and the witness. What if the "witness" was the one that actually did it, and the one everyone thinks was the murderer was the guy who was coerced into tagging along and burying the body? Thus, he still knew where to take them when confronted. And even going beyond that, maybe it wasn't either of them and there was just collusion to pin it on this guy who helped bury him.
That confession they got is not the best. Not only would it not hold up in a court of law, it's even questionable in the court of public opinion. If you shoot me multiple times and ask me leading questions, I'm sure I'd probably confess to being a reincarnation of Hitler. I mean, I think that guy probably did it, but there's reasonable doubt for sure.
Clearly there is some other shit goin on here... meth, anyone?
I grew up in a law enforcement family, mainly Sheriff's office and not city police (Sheriff's have a lot more power, involves politics, is county wide, etc).
We can all agree what happened to Garrett is awful, but continually blaming HCSO without understanding a small town county Sheriff's methods or general views is naive.
It's not that HSCO is incompetent, it's that they DON'T CARE.
Garrett was a criminal (pot dealer from SoCal) who came to their county for the specific purpose of conducting criminal activity and making tax free income. They are quite simply, GLAD HE'S DEAD. He essentially pissed in their face.
All of these conspiracies about HSCO being on farmers payroll (not unlikely, but has nothing to do with why they won't investigate Garrett) and being incompetent idiots is just wrong. They aren't incompetent, they just don't care.
The Sheriff is 100% within his right to pick and choose what cases they investigate in his county, and it's why the entire idea of 'County Sheriff' should be done away with and local police agencies should take over.
What they are basically saying, between the lines is 'Yes, we know he was murdered, yes, we know who did it. But since we are glad it happened, we will just say it's lack of evidence to arrest'.
Same reason they wanted to arrest the AP8 - the fact that they took the Sheriffs job into their own hands, is a HUGE insult to the HCSO. They care WAY more about that than Garett's death.
People need to learn HOW these agencies operate before trying to act like they are crooked. If you grew up in Chicago watching CPD do Gang Taskforce and etc, of course these Sheriff's look incompetent. The more you know, kids.
And as hard as this truth is to accept, you should not blame them. Of course Garretts death sucks, but still; he was a criminal. You CANNOT expect cops to be sad when criminals no longer can conduct criminal activity in their town; it's illogical to think otherwise.
If someone came into your environment, and did exactly the thing you don't want them doing - you wouldn't exactly be sad when they stopped, would you?
I just think it's a bit funny how they say this 4k square mile area in mostly one county is so 'wild' and 'easy to hide grows'.
And the ridiculous statement that 80% of pot comes from there... Appalachia has the same landscape but WAY more vast, with WAY more mountains, and WAY more deep bush. We don't just make moonshine folks we also grow WAY more pot than one silly county.
Pot Choppers out here can't find shit, it's just too vast. Miles from any soul, let alone just up the hill from town like in Humboldt. Guys around here run miles upon miles of twine between their gardens cause the bush is so deep if you don't follow the twine, you wont ever find your garden again.
Just hadda put you west coasters in your place for a bit.
Edit: Yeah, we also have the crazy methed out rednecks on quads with guns that even the cops are scared of.
Don't come here. So dangerous! And the mosquitoes are just awful. And the traffic. Terrible! Just try to drive through redway or garberville and catch a green light... Impossible! Not to mention there is no Papa Johns anywhere... eureka? Never seen so much bum poops in my life. Agate beach??? Pshhh more like trash beach! Never seen so many white power tattoos aside from that time my weird uncle took me to that rally. Petrolia? The smog out there is unreasonable. Willow Creek is a nice little town though. They grow better weed in lake county anyway. Everybody knows it. AP? Never been there. Something's fishy when everyone who witnessed a confession (whether under duress or not) ends up dead under suspicious circumstances...
The cannabis industry is being gentrified.
I get that it's a reenacting, but a lot of the people in the show were pretty heavily armed >!like the guy that shot Scott with the (illegal) automatic AK with that big (illegal) muzzle flash hider!< while they're still in California with the strictest gun laws in the country. I would also doubt that the people on the quad bikes escorting the police around (in an open carry illegal state) would have bullet buttons on their rifles.
Are just all illegal or out of state guns?
There is a book that came out last year about the weed industry. The Quiet Blossom. It’s a personal account of a guys experience working on farms. There is some talk about violent crime, but it’s got a lot more about what life was like in general on pot farms.
I realize that this has probably been done to death, but I thought I'd offer myself up.
A little about me: I am not from Humboldt ("Fromboldt" as they say). I moved here several years ago, although I have been living and working in Northern California my entire life. I have worked in land use (surveys, engineering) extensively in this area as a professional, and I know it well.
If that seems like a good starting off point, I'd be happy to do an AMA. Thanks in advance.
First, I highly recommend The Redheaded Blackbelt blog - good local news.
Second, this missing woman seems to have gone missing with her boyfriend.
The interesting thing to me is that the community seems very sensitive to this, and Humboldt County Sheriff's Office is mentioned in the first comment.
I mean if the HA or Mafia's weed grower gets turned over. They are not going to just start over again.
Not to mention hand in hand with organise crime is a currupt police. I was stunned that the sheriff was like, "well they don't like us going up there ", I am sure Compton, and places in Baltimore, Atlanta, and pretty much all major cities have places that would soon turn into the same if the police decided to say fuck it. They have to be on the take right?
All that shit about there is no murder if there is no body.
I can’t help but noticing that in all the court cases Ive been reading about these people in this show that meth plays a significant role in the mountain. Why doesn’t the doc go into detail about this? I feel like we get sucked into the the weed part when meth is probably more involved with the murders and erratic behavior. If there was a season 2 it needs to address meth and the mountain and what the sheriffs are doing to address that problem. You can legalize growing weed but the meth is still there.
