This is the place to put news, blogs, articles, non-profit videos, personal rants and insights about Food Sovereignty, Food Security and Indigenous Food Sovereignty.

Don't know the difference? Basically: Food security is making sure you have food. Food sovereignty is having local control over the food system that gets the food to your table (and partially, being able to trace the steps). Indigenous Food Sovereignty is when Indigenous people have control over their own food systems - this is often linked to traditional culture and challenging colonization.

A subreddit dedicated to food sovereignty. What exactly does that mean?

What are we standing for?

A world where…

…all peoples, nations and states are able to determine their own food producing systems and policies that provide every one of us with good quality, adequate, affordable, healthy and culturally appropriate food;

…all peoples in each of our countries are able to live with dignity, earn a living wage for their labour and have the opportunity to remain in their homes, if they so choose;

...food sovereignty is considered a basic human right, recognised and implemented by communities, peoples, states and international bodies with respect to the effect it has on at least 7 generations to come;

…we are able to conserve and rehabilitate rural environments, fish populations, landscapes and food traditions based on ecologically sustainable management of land, soils, water, seas, air, seeds, livestock and all other biodiversity;

…we value, recognize and respect our worldwide diversity of traditional knowledge, food, language and culture, and the way we organise and express ourselves;

…. there is genuine and integral agrarian reform that guarantees full rights to land, defends and recovers the territories of indigenous peoples, ensures fishing communities’ access and control over their fishing areas and eco-systems, honours access and control by pastoral communities over pastoral lands (shepherds herding livestock) and migratory routes, assures decent jobs with fair remuneration and labour rights for all, and a future for young people in the countryside;...where agrarian reform revitalises inter-dependence between producers and consumers, ensures and promotes community survival, social and economic justice, ecological sustainability, and respect for local autonomy and governance with equal rights for women and men...where agrarian reform guarantees rights to territory and self-determination for all peoples;

...share our lands and territories peacefully and fairly among our peoples, be we any race, indigenous peoples, artisanal fishers, pastoralists, or others who honor and respect these declarations;

…in the case of natural and human-created disasters and conflict-recovery situations, food sovereignty acts as a form of “insurance” that strengthens local recovery efforts and mitigates negative impacts... where we remember that communities affected by disasters are not helpless, and where strong local organization for self-help is the key to recovery;

...peoples’ power to make decisions about their material, natural and spiritual heritage are defended;

...all peoples have the right to defend their territories from the actions of transnational corporations.

Indigenous Youth Entrepreneurs plan seasonal food production project

This is turning out to be a really wonderful and inspiring story about entrepreneurship and youth. The Niriqatiginnga project has this small, super awesome team of youth and artists who are planning to launch their own food products for sale this fall and winter. They're planning to go out on the tundra and harvest a whole bunch of delicious cloudberries, and then conceptualize and design a whole campaign from start to finish. They're learning to plan events, media, digital and food sector literacy and career skills.

With all of these activities being developmental and emergent in nature, they are actively looking to build relationships and engage with grocery stores, gift shops and distributors who might want to order their creations. They’re also seeking food sector input and networking to give them a bit of advice and guidance as we collectively learn and grow.

They're also hoping that people will support in sharing this post, and passing along within their networks. This could make a huge difference to the youth entrepreneurs and their project. Please pass it along to those who might be interested, and encourage them to reach out to them!

It's a great example of youth contributing to addressing northern food insecurity head on.

What provided you knowledge on your journey to a healthy lifestyle?

Looking backward, I wasn’t afforded much knowledge of healthy food or even habits with my food, I am interested in changing everything about the way and why I eat, I want to fuel my body for the future not suffice the grumble, I want to prepare for future illness and injury, and I have noticed a stigma when I am trying to educate my self from the fast food lanes and even now big super markets, I want to read up on anything that anyone who reads this thinks helped them and will help anyone looking to start like a baby and relearn food! Best on your journey!

New entries for vegan Indian cooking class! Is anyone interested?

Hi! My name is Shreyas, a vegan from India who loves cooking food.

I am taking new entries for my vegan Indian cooking class which has been going on since May of this year. I have had so many incredible people joining in via google meet. I want to now expand this to a new group of people. Here are the details of it-

  1. We would be cooking Palak Tofu (Spinach and Tofu Saag) and Roti (Indian flatbread). this
  2. I would be sending the ingredient list well in advance.
  3. Date and Time- 26th of September, 4.30 pm eastern time
  4. Mode- Google Meet (The link would be sent 10-15 minutes before the class starts)
  5. Fee- 10 USD via PayPal
  6. Number of entries- 6-8 people in a group
