/r/Fairbanks
For denizens of Alaska's Fairbanks-North Star Borough and surrounding areas!
Welcome to the subreddit for those who reside in beautiful, sunny, warm-whoops, sorry, wrong intro. It's cold in the winter, relatively hot in the summer, and we have one of the biggest temperature differentials on Earth. Also some of the biggest vegetables.

Outside of the VFW or AL, are there any local vet groups or get togethers around fairbanks? Asked around and all the groups I found are more formal group counseling with va referral.
I just started renting my first dry cabin by myself. It's 850 sq. ft and has a Toyo Laser 530 stove. This stove is rated to cover 900 sq ft.
It is set to 68 but struggles to keep up with 65. It is running on high combustion all day and now shuts off every two hours to initiate cleaning mode. I keep losing a degree when it does that and it hardly recovers back to 65 for the following two hours.
The floors in this cabin are ice cold. I have done what I can and spent my own money to put in remnant carpeting, but some places are still bare (under kitchen counter for example).
I feel uneasy about the stove and the floors... is this a normal problem here? I just want to know that I'm not alone.
Trying to do my research. I see that an episode of Guy Fieri’s Diners, Drine-ins, and dives was filmed there but with only three places shown I know there are some more gems. Type of cuisine doesn’t matter: we are on vacation so screw the diet. Plus my 49th birthday is happening while we will be visiting so what place would you go to celebrate?
Trying to go through the pinned post of what to do in Fairbanks to help find other places
Road was great! Saw the plows go by heading into town on the way out. It is really slick and not all of the turnouts have been plowed.
People with wells.. or without. What’s your average kWh daily winter use? My heat trace is costly to run. Worth it, of course. Two vehicles plugged in, regular use around the house and heat trace for water/sewer is running around 50 kWh daily. Curious if yours is similar and what you may be doing to save money.
I have one semi-reliable friend for snowshoe adventures. Just wondering if anyone else is in the hobby/looking for fellow enthusiasts?
I'm still fairly new, all things considered, but have a set of shoes that work for me and a DIY pulk that seems to be working okay for the time being!
I took Fairbanks for granted, put the Lower 48 on a pedestal and moved away. I now regret it deeply and am stuck in a town that is way, way worse than I could have imagined.
Fairbanks and Alaska is a tough place to live, but the grass is not always greener.
Any suggestions for things to do tomorrow around town? Or even further out… just not excited to sit on the couch and watch football with my parents as this is their first visit to Fairbanks.
Has anyone been out to the Castner ice cave lately? How’s the trail? I’ve done the secondary trail before on the south side of the river (which doesn’t need snow shoes) but that was in February… so wondering if that’s accessible and packed down.
Any good donation spots we can hit before our flight ? Open late :-) TIA
Any local artist making Christmas cards?
Will be printing with black and white ink, first person there to ask for colored ink gets to pick the color for the night! Can print on anything that can be ironed on site or you take home and tumble dry to heat set the ink. Great way to give some new life to your clothes or make a holiday present
Looking to replace my (very) old snowboarding goggles. Need to use them for boarding and plowing on 4 wheeler. Might get into XC ski this year, as well, who knows.
Where to buy a decent pair that fits over glasses? All I could think of was REI.
TIA!
Hi! I am moving to the Fairbanks area in February from Florida and have 0 winter gear. I would like to take advantage of some black friday deals and would love your top recommendations for any or all of the following:
Or anything else you might suggest that I am not even thinking about! I appreciate specificity - like brand and type.
TIA.
Hi friends! I'm back for my weekly stupid question. This time it's about my passion, Music!
As I've said before, I'm a soon-to-be aerospace engineering student at UAF. However, ive also been a very successful musician for 8+ years. I've played at plenty of universities, symposium, and events, and even did a performance at Carnegie hall. I think the next logical step as a musician is the FSO.
However, can't find much info on it online, and coming from the lower 48, I obviously can't just ask a friend. So I'll ask reddit instead. What's it like up there? How nice is Dr. Zilberkant? Are there any openings for Euph / Trombone players? Anyone with any info would be incredibly helpful.
Visiting for Thanksgiving (flying in on the day) are there any restaurants that will be serving a traditional dinner in the evening?
Yup, and if you want to see it, just enter through the Badger Gate! Not sure is it's my professionalism, being a part time gunsmith or this shotgun held by the gate guards has more bare metal than blue...... It looks unprofessional on the US Army that our men and women are being issued such poorly maintained equipment. I'd be embarrassed having my people carrying such a weapon. When I was active-duty refinishing weapons was part of long-term maintenance.
I only go through the gate a few times a month. Maybe that is why I notice. The past three summers I've offered to refinish that thing - even left my name and number - no call back.
It should get Cerakoted or Duracoated by a local gunsmith to withstand Alaskan weather. What color? Cerakoat has 200+. Could do it in Storm Trooper Imperial White - that would look sweet. Or festive reds and greens for Christmas. Then pink metal and red hearts on the stock for Valentines Day - come Spring move to Easter hues of blue, green and other spring colors. Memorial Day to July 4th give it a red, white, and blue with US flag motif. Come fall, go with pumpkin spice orange and Fall Leaves colors.
Looks like we need five shotguns coated to keep up with the festivities. Damn, this is getting out of hand. Anyone else want to chip in? Will you MP's drop it off at a local gunsmith if we come up with the $$$?
Come on Ft Wainwright. A bottle of Super Blue is just $8.99!! That shotgun looks like it was lost in the river back when Nixon was in office and someone magnet pulled from the Chena River mud.
Facebook is useless, so is insta so maybe this will work….
I’m looking for someone who can do realistic chickadees… suggestions or pics appreciated!
Looking for a masseuse, in either NP or FBX. What are your recommendations? The one place in town I tried wasn’t for me. They were rushed and left me more sore than when I walked in. TIA for your suggestions (:
Flower only and looking for “ Alaska thunder fuck “ if possible or banana kush
Passing through and I have no idea what's going on while resident friends out of town. I know there's a play at Salisbury theater it but that's all I've got on radar.
I need some plumbing work done on my home. Specifically, I need pipes set up for a washer.
What is a good plumbing company to call?
I've heard the Prospector is overpriced, but I don't know of anyone else around here.
Thanks!
I'd like to get some new nalbinding needles, and if I can I would like to support a local. If you can do it let me know! 😁
What is your go to?
Stegers? Bunny Boots? Baffins?
