Hey y’all. I moved to Anchorage in April this year from Salt Lake City, Utah. Back home it was the law that people had to shovel their sidewalks. Obviously not everyone did it, but most people did. Is snow removal on sidewalks here not required or something? The sidewalks I have seen cleared are few and far between
Anybody see the hit and run on N'Light by Family Medical Park? (8:30-35am Thursday today) a white delivery van side swiped a Ford truck and kept going. Unable to see if any logos were on the van.
Thank you in advance.
Need to find an apartment that will allow me to have 1 pitbull mix. I am not finding anything, does anyone know of any places to look?
Anyone have suggestions on a shop to do a 4” lift on my truck?
Im after a Dobsonian, anywhere in town or the valley that would sell those ?
This is Panama City, FL …
Are there any charities that sell sandbags for the winter? I’d rather my money go to someone local vs the blue and orange stores
I know this is a real long shot but what the heck....
Somewhere around 2008 or so I acquired some MP3s from an Anchorage band called "Makeshift". I vaguely recall they had a MySpace Music page (lol) or something. I have two songs, "Ready" and "Waiting so long".
The style is heavy rock. I really liked it a lot but couldn't ever get any more and kinda of forgot about them. Recently my 14 y/o daughter came across the tracks and LOVES them and now we are dying to see if we can find anything more from these guys. Tracks from a CD, demo tape, whatever. There's very little to find online, I'm sure they split many years ago. Fun project.
If you have some appropriate books that are paperback without staples the patients would love to have more reading materials. You can drop them off in the main lobby.
When you look at the map of what the municipality is responsible for, they were pretty on top of it yesterday.
But when you look at the state responsibility roads, they are utter garbage. Is it just state incompetence? Or is Dunleavy withholding funds from Anchorage? It’s well documented that he doesn’t like Anchorage, so is he literally preventing the streets from being plowed to be petty? It absolutely fits his personality.
I keep hearing about how great the Matsu roads are, so he’s definitely not holding back any funds from plowing that area.
Does anyone have recommendations for art lessons? I'm looking for a gift for my wife. Something that might have a intro class for a couple of different medums? Or maybe four - six in depth sessions on one? We live in Eagle River so that would be preferred, but anywhere in the muni is fine.
I'm also looking for place that sell compatable air compressors but had no luck (checked sportsman and cabelas). Ive also tried airgas (for refills) but they only do stuff like that for the military.
907 paint ball is temporarly closed and the pumps they have at gas staions for tires don't fit.
I've gotten pointed to AIH but have never been there so idk what to expect (plz lemme know).
If y'all know of any places that refill hpa/paintball tanks or sell 3000psi rated (or more) automatic air compressors then let me know please.
Thank you!
Where'd it go? Went to drop off my ballot this evening and the drop box was nowhere to be found.
The Muni said they were going to start plowing residential/non-arterial roads at 8 p.m. and would you look at that! It’s happening! I live in sector 21 and can confirm that my street is fully cleared. I even saw a grader drive by like it was doing a final check.
Check muni.org/plow for updated information, and don’t forget to say thank you to Mayor LaFrance for not bungling this like the last guy did. 😇
Idk if the person I saw today is on here but I just wanted to say thank you to the legend I saw come home from work amd shovel our entire street sidewalk by hand
After being out and about a few times today, I thought of a few more important tips to include.
When stopping at an intersection, keep some distance in front of you and watch that rear view mirror for the inevitable person who doesn’t have good tires or a concept of winter driving. There’s been a few times I was able to avoid being rear ended by leaving that buffer zone and my head on a swivel.
Watch out for slush and try to avoid just plowing through it. It creates drag on one side of the vehicle which can spin you out. It also splashes all over everyone else making a difficult situation worse.
Beware the gutter lane for slush (see above) and chunks of snow or castoff from not-so-great plowing. Don’t use the gutter lane to pass. Also, for some reason, a few people in this town like to shovel/blow/plow snow into the roadway. Guess which line might have that surprise? There might also be pedestrians navigating the snow or maybe trash cans that have fallen over. Try to use it for just turning when you can.
If you can’t see, don’t just send it. There are all kinds of scenarios where visibility gets really low—fog, mist/snow dust from a truck, blowing snow, etc. You can lose your bearings very quickly and end up with a tire off the pavement and spin out or hit another vehicle or obstacle such as a moose. (those crafty buggers are everywhere). Space it out so you can see with enough time to stop if needed. Freezing fog (a thing you might not know about if you’re from Texas) is a solid reason for this caution. It coats everything with ice and obscures your visibility. Two bad things together. Anyone who drives over those Knik River bridges near Chugiak can confirm how quickly things go nuts or just look up the pile up from last year.
Someone mentioned this in the previous post’s comments but it bears repeating: keep your vehicle stocked with some provisions. Not super essential in town but driving anywhere that you might get stranded (accident, breakdown, traffic jam from accident or avalanche/rock slide/road damage from quake, etc.), have some basics with you to be comfortable if you are there for 24 hours. Water, snack, dry clothes, shovel, basic tools, blankets, extra boots, etc. the weather in AK can kill you. Even if you’re just going to the store, keep some proper jackets and outer wear in the car so you’re not stuck when it’s -10° wearing flip-flops, gym shorts, and a crappy hoodie. Better to be prepared than kicking yourself for not. A good first aid kit is a solid choice.
Getting a flat tire in winter sucks. I put a small floor jack, a proper lug wrench, and a wheel chock or two in my trunk and was glad to have it when I ran over something that ripped a hole in my tire. The factory kit with the scissor jack and lame short lug wrench are not fun in the winter.
6B: your wheel may freeze to the hub making it difficult to pull off the flat. You can probably prepare for this with something as simple as slathering some Vaseline between the contact points when changing tires so that it will repel water. A little torch in your tool kit might be a good idea.
Related to the above, keep that spare tire aired up. Not a pleasant surprise to find it flat. But see below also.
One of those things you might find useful is a battery booster for emergency jump starting yourself. If it has an air pump, that’s a bonus. Costco sells a Cat brand combo that’s come in very handy.
If you don’t have a block heater, consider it for the days under 20°. A battery blanket is also helpful for holding cranking power. Use them on a timer because they will slurp that power. A couple of hours before crank-up should do it. Longer if it’s below -20°
Cold starting an engine is tough on it. Give it time to warm before driving and go slow so the transmission and stuff has time to warm up.
Hope these are also helpful! Be careful out there
Soo what’s the verdict for school tomorrow? Seeing it’s gonna drop down to 20 degrees tonight turning all this melted snow to ice. Anyone have a clue?
Hey everyone! I just moved to anchorage and bought a 2004 toyota sienna awd and I'm trying to get my first pair of studded snow tires for it. I called almost every dealer in town and the best offer I got were the hankook winter i pike rs2 w429 studded tires for $900. Are they good tires? Should I get new tires or should i get old used tires to save money? I am going to driving all around outside anchorage to go ice climbing and xc skiing this winter so any advice would be super helpful. There is not alot of info about these tires out there so anybodies review of them or good alternatives would be awesome. Thank you all again
These costco shovels lasted maybe 7 yrs or longer. Worth the price I thought. Any thoughts
Less than a year old. These shovels are a joke. Corners bent up like tin. Dry snow slides right off. Wet snow sticks hard. Whats your favorite?

This is what happens when you don't punish landlords who constantly raise rent and don't maintain property but they definitely want them profits. It's sick what these people do and they should never be allowed to rent again if caught with property that's not properly maintained.
Every time the schools are closed, people come out of the woodwork saying how soft everyone is now and how schools were never closed when they were a kid. This made me curious, so I did a little research. What I found was if you didn’t have many snow days when you were a kid, it was mostly because there wasn’t much snow falling on school days when you were a kid.
Going back, I couldn’t find any significant snow event that didn’t close schools without some obvious rationale. (It is worth noting that a lot of closures aren’t due to snow at all, but ice, which is harder to contextualize.)
Here are a few random examples: Over the entire decade of the 80s, Anchorage only averaged 60” of snow per year. Over 3 calendar years, from 2014-2016, Anchorage never accumulated even 10" of snow in an entire week. That 3-year span had less snow than 2023 by itself.
I’m sure people will point out random snow events to try to prove their point. “I remember in 2003 when we got a couple feet in a few days. I don’t remember any snow days.” And they’re right. I couldn't find any snow days in 2003, and 30” of snow did fall in a 5-day span. But all that snow fell during winter break when there was already no school.
That’s the context people leave out. 8” of snow in 4 hours probably won’t close school if it starts falling Friday afternoon. It might if it starts falling 1am on Monday.
That being said, I imagine the school district is more willing to close schools now that remote learning is an option. And in a few of the earlier articles I found on school closures, the Superintendent is on record regretting not closing school additional days, or it mentioned how much negative feedback the district received for not closing schools.
While I may be definitely am missing some, this is what I found for the count of school closures each year:
1996: 1
2000: 1 (EDIT: Missed this one)
2002: 2 (both due to the St. Patrick's Day Storm)
2009: 3 (This was 3 in a row. They only had 2 days built in and had to make up time)
2010: 2
2011: 1
2013: 2 (EDIT: found another one this year)
2015: 1 (EDIT: missed)
2017: 1 (EDIT: missed)
2018: 6 (all due to earthquake)
2019: 1
2020: A bazillion due to the pandemic
2021: 2
2022: 7 (1 in November 2022, followed by 6 closures during the major December snowstorms)
2023: 5 (4 in November 2023 after a big snowstorm, then again December 12, 2023)
2024: 2 (including today)
NOTE: This only includes district-wide, full-day closures. I definitely am missing some.
Are avocados easy to find this time of year? How much do they cost?
