Why "Yes on 2"?

I am genuinely trying to find out answers. If your answer boils down to "because it'll help democrats", or "because fox told them to" then please refrain.

So. Why do some people want to do away with Ranked Choice Voting?

If you voted yes on 2, I'd love to hear from you. If you have a friend or family member who voted yes on 2, I'd love to hear their reasons as they state them.

Issues with absentee voting

I applied 6 months ago for a mail-in ballot. I re-applied again 2 months ago when I found out I'd be out of state for work on election day. My plane leaves tomorrow. I still haven't received my ballot. I'm going in person this afternoon to do early voting because this mail-in voting is bullshit. This is my first time trying to do mail-in voting, and I'm not a fan, obviously. Anyone else not receive a ballot?

Read Prop 1 Closely

“This act would also require paid sick leave for many employees. Smaller employers would allow 40 or more hours of sick leave per year. Larger employers would allow 56 or more hours. Sick leave would carry over to the next year.”

What’s surprised you about politics in Alaska?

If you’ve moved from Outside to Alaska, what caught you off guard when you started following the news here?

Or if you moved from Alaska to somewhere else, what things did you take for granted that turned out to be different in the new place?

For long-term Alaskans, what’s something wild that more people should know about?

No RCV presidential primary?

Right? There were no presidential candidates on the primary ballots? Why is that?

Because we should all beable to civilly debate! /alaska gets way to bogged down with non political topics and is littered with harassers.

I'll be tuning in here to see if any good convos pop up!

Election Deniers: Stop with the misinformation

I was an MSB election worker. After intense training and taking the oath, I helped set up the collapsible aluminum boxes that deniers called “election machines”. Calling them a “machine” is a stretch. They had a scanner that was fixed to the top of the box. the voter would insert their ballot to be scanned as a count of total ballots. We asked each voter to stand by the “machine” to be sure the voter visibly saw their ballot was counted. There was no internet connection at any of the poll sites I worked at. It literally counted the circle that was filled in by the voter. Very low tech, but it was accurate. That’s it. It was that simple. There was no sending the ballots up via satellite to Italy or Venezuela. We worked long and late hours to accommodate all eligible voters and to complete the process. We had the strictest training and rules to follow. All counts were crossed checked by the ledger that each voter signed. When polls closed we were instructed to remove all the ballots that were dropped in the box and insert them into a sealed bag that would be counted again back at the Borough building against the “machine” tallies. We all witnessed and signed the outer envelope. Election Supervisors were required to have another election official drive with them to the borough building to assure that no shenanigans happened on the way. All of my fellow workers were seniors and dedicated to running a smooth election. None of us knew each other’s party affiliation. Now, with hand counting; the election is less accurate and will take a lot longer. Election workers will be tired and will be asked to stay later than they ever did before, which was very late. After I saw the ridiculous removal of the Dominion boxes, I didn’t want to participate in the big lie. A single conspiracy theorist stood before the assembly requesting the machines be removed. All members except Stephanie Powers went along with this conspiracy lie to have them removed. No public vote occurred. The mostly all MAGA Assembly made the decision for us. On the very day the machines left the Borough building, Dominion won a 787 million dollar lawsuit from FOX news due to their misinformation, lies and defamation to the Dominican company. Ironic. With no scanners (ie “the machine”) a voter won’t even be able to witness their ballot being counted. It is dropped into a box to be handled multiple times before being hand counted in the wee hours of the night. No room for error there is there? (said sarcastically).

The leader of MAGA continues with the lies and has pushed them out further everyday to include natural disasters (FEMA is not evil and is helping storm victims despite threats) , migrants eating cats and dogs (debunked), and the “enemy within” (whoever disagrees with him or election officials), journalists (all but FOX) and that he won the 2020 election despite no proof. Fear mongering is his game. It will never stop as long as he is the leader of MAGA. I won’t call him or his cult Republican. My Dad would roll over in his grave at the thought of MAGA being Republican. If you are still a denier; consider you are being force fed bad information everyday, by the hour. Over and over again.

Looking for resources on Alaskan Politics

Hi folks,

I recently moved from Florida to Fairbanks for a public policy job with a nonprofit, and I’ve quickly found out just how different Alaska’s politics and legal system are from the lower 48. It’s been overwhelming, to say the least.

I’m looking to study Alaska’s political landscape so that I can do my job, and thought it would be helpful to ask if anyone has any resources (books, films, etc.) that could help a non-Alaskan start to get to know the political scene better.

I appreciate any and all suggestions!

Most Important Man in the State for RCV- John Wayne Howe

Please tell me if I'm wrong but this is my theory.

The biggest threat to RCV in Alaska is that the Conservatives and Republicans haven't bought in. Many of them are convinced that it is a Democrat plot made to hurt Republicans. This is half false because they're just basing their opinions on the 2022 congressional race and half a self-fulfilling prophecy because they're convincing their voters not to rank and therefore, they have to pressure candidates to drop out to avoid spitting the vote.

In this congressional race, RCV is going to help Republicans and give a really great demonstration of how conservative voters benefit (as we all do). John Wayne Howe is a candidate for the Alaskan Independance Party. They are an Alaska Focused Conservative Party. John has run for multiple other seats including Senate and Governor. He gets Thousands of votes that would otherwise go to Republicans and could very easily be a spoiler in a FPTP election. How his voters rank (or don't rank) their other choices will most likely determine this race, so how Begich approaches them will be key.

Howe himself is proRCV although he does have some criticisms of the system overall. See how he describes it in this short video. It's clear that Howe benefits by campaigning that RCV prevents him from being a spoiler. If Begich sends the message that RCV should be taken away, these 3rd party voters may avoid ranking Begich second and hand the election to Peltola. If Begich supports Howe's voters ranking himself second, he will likely win the election and he will be demonstrating a concrete example of an election that will not be spoiled because of our system and how easy it is to use.

So, John Wayne Howe getting his message out and being as vocal as possible in the next 45 days, vocally supporting RCV, getting press coverage, makes him a bigger deciding factor that Begich and the Republicans have to take seriously, thus proving why RCV is so important. If any Reports want to help RCV, they need to interview Howe. Anyone that wants to give money to help RCV, should donate to Howe. Anyone that wants to win an argument with a conservative Alaskan, should bring up Howe.

Please tell me if I'm missing something.

What's with all the misleading Ads that say 'Political Elites are trying to take our freedoms away' with Ballot Measure 2?

I say misleading because there's never any mention in the ads that they are talking about Ranked Choice Voting. A "YES" on ballot measure 2 only restores voting in Alaska the way it was pre-2020. It was out-of-State "political elites" that used similar cleverly worded advertising, along with misleading descriptions on the ballot (while everyone was distracted with the novel corona virus) that brought us RCV in the first place.

If you want RCV to stay, vote NO. If you want RCV to go, vote YES.

Looking for people who want to defend RCV

The system we adopted in 2020 is under threat this year before we even have the chance to see it's impact on Alaskan Politics. I don't see people organizing to defeat this repeal and I'm worried we're going to take a huge step back on all the problems that we were trying to address when it passed. What do you think? Is there just a passion difference between the repeal RCV and the keep RCV camps when it comes to activism? Is it too far before the election for people to care about this kind of thing?
