FAM (Fertility Awareness Method - Secular) and NFP (Natural Family Planning - Religious Roots) both encompass Fertility Awareness Based Methods of Body Literacy. They can be used to avoid pregnancy, conceive, or assess general health.
This subreddit is a space to discuss these methods, share charts, and support others on their body literacy journeys.
This subreddit is not intended to replace learning a method for yourself or medical advice.
Hi, FAM fans!
The fertility awareness method (FAM) is highly beneficial for any uterus-having person who wants to educate themselves about their body. Even for people who have no interest in using the method for avoiding or achieving pregnancy, it is still an empowering means of taking control of your gynecological health.
FAM is not a good method for everyone as a method of birth control. It is only appropriate for those who have the discipline to learn the method well, and the relationship security to follow the rules once they understand them. It is also only recommended for monogamous couples, given the danger of AIDS and other STDs.
As a method of pregnancy achievement, it is highly advised as the first step that every couple should take to maximize their chances of conception, and to determine if there may be anything impeding their ability to get pregnant. Fertility awareness can be very effective in helping couples plan the timing of their baby's birth.
This group is a space for people with questions about FAM or for people who use FAM to discuss it openly.

I need technical help. On Tempdrop is there a way to set it so it only records to the tenth decimal point? Same question for when you import it into RYB?
So, I've done a lot of research and have been tracking my CM and BBT for a couple months now just to get into the habit of it while I figure out which method I want to use. I just decided on Symptopro and was wondering if anyone has been able to pay for their instruction via HSA or insurance? I've scoured the internet and couldn't find much about this.
Money is tight right now with moving and getting married next year. So, I want to make sure that I don't pay out of pocket if I don't have to.
Hey everyone,
Sorry in advance for the long post. I need to talk with other females about this who won’t be judgmental.
I had my youngest in February and had the Paragard placed shortly after that since I wanted a non hormonal BC due to HBC mixed with PCOS wreaking havoc on my mental and physical health. My periods started back up in April and my cycle lengths have been 27, 31, 41, 31, and 63 days. When they started back up, I would notice an egg white mucus, make of note of it, and usually have my period 14-20 days after that. I was not pregnant in that longer cycle as I started taking tests every week when my period didn’t show up when it should have based off of my cervical mucus. I figured I missed it due to stress.
Well I just started my current cycle on Oct. 29 and on the same day it started, I passed a large, ping pong sized clot. My ObGyn had me come in to check the placement and we discovered it was too low. This isn’t my first time using paragard. When I initially had it, I had very heavy bleeding, to the point that my ObGyn sent me to the ER. I was hesitant but hopeful getting it placed this time around.
After a lot of talking (and crying) with my husband, we decided to have to paragard taken out (that wasn’t in question since it was out of place anyway) and do NFP. Getting the paragard replaced wasn’t something I wanted to do either due to the issues I’ve already had and not wanting to risk is moving again, having an ectopic pregnancy, perforating my uterine wall, etc. I absolutely do not want to use HBC but I don’t want another kid right now either.
I’ve purchased an Oura ring and the Natural Cycles subscription. In the past, after I had my HBC taken out and before I became pregnant with my youngest, I purchased a big bag of ovulation test strips and tested everyday for 3 months and never received a positive. I had 2 periods during that time. Because of that, I figured taking my BBT with the Oura ring would be the best bet since I wake up multiple times a night (baby) and didn’t think I’d get accurate results using a thermometer.
I understand that this subreddit has some (valid) concerns with Natural Cycles so I’m reaching out trying to get more info on NFP in general and methods I can do in tandem with NC because I’m so lost with everything and feel like I rushed into this. My ObGyn and my PCP (I saw both of them this week) kind of just looked at me weird and brushed me off when I mentioned my concerns about HBC and using NFP.
I’m just having a hard time right now and any advice, information, whatever would be so, so helpful. I just had the paragard taken out today so everything is already in motion and I kind of feel like I’m drowning.
TL;DR don’t want to use HBC due to health reasons, Paragard didn’t work, I have an Oura ring and Natural Cycle subscription, what can I do in tandem with it to prevent pregnancy
Edit: I have a long vaginal canal and small hands (able-to-wear-child-sized-gloves small) so I’m unable to check my cervix. I gave it a try earlier just to make sure and it was a no-go.
Edit 2: I’ve seen several mentions of this already, so as a note, I am religious but my religion does not prohibit use of barriers/withdrawal. If a pregnancy were to occur, we would be keeping it (thus why I put TTA2 in the title, I figured that would be closest). Our religion was not a factor in choosing FAM/NFP, so I guess FAM would be the better term to use.
Hi all! I’m now on my 5th cycle since coming off the pill back in May. My first couple cycles sat around the 32-36 day mark, but last cycle was a perfect little 28 days! I had been on HBC for almost 7 years but I (wrongly) assumed that my last cycle being basically picture-perfect altogether was a sign of my body coming back to equilibrium after all those years on the pill.
Unfortunately, I’m now on day 43 of this cycle and don’t believe I’ve ovulated yet. At a couple different points, I had ‘peak’/S+ mucus but only for 1 day at a time which isn’t normal for me compared to my previous cycles. I haven’t really had any Mittelschmirz, and I normally do. I just haven’t had any days where I’m like ‘oh damn I’m definitely nearing ovulation’ lol. I also thought I had a temp shift pretty early in this cycle (day 13) but I think my temp for the first several days of this cycle was just much lower than usual so what i assumed was a temp shift was just my body getting back to the temperature range it usually sits in pre-temp shift.
I took a pregnancy test a couple of days ago, even though I’m pretty dang certain I haven’t even ovulated yet anyways. It was negative (as I anticipated). At this point I basically just feel like I’m in limbo waiting for SOMETHING to happen. For context, I was under immense stress from mid-September until about a week ago because I was in the process of moving and it was just a very stressful time for me. This cycle started about a week into that very stressful period. So I think this cycle being so weird is probably a result of that crazy amount of stress I was under, as well as still not being that far removed from all my years of HBC in the grand scheme of things.
I guess I just needed to rant but I would love if anyone had any words of reassurance for me or went through something similar when coming off the pill/when under a lot of stress!
Hi, anyone have the sensiplan wiki? It’s showing me unavailable when I click on the link.
I’ve been on some form of hormonal BC for the past 6 years (pill, IUD, and now the ring) but I’m hoping to go off of it because it’s really put a damper on my libido. My long term partner is understanding and supportive but it’s been frustrating for me.
I’m TTA and am considering some form of STM based on what I’ve read so far. Also planing on taking a class before going off my BC. However, I have a few hesitations that I’m wondering how other folks have navigated:
I have historically had really bad period cramps (like ibuprofen alternated w acetaminophen every 3 hours for 2-3 days otherwise I’m in a fetal position bad). The BC has been great since I haven’t had to deal with this. I’m nervous to experience cramping again. Has FAM/NFP methods helped you manage these types of PMS symptoms?
given the current hostile political climate in the US around reproductive justice, another hesitation has been the fear of possibly messing up with tracking and getting pregnant. I know this could always be a possibility with BC but I’m afraid there’s more room for error with FAM/NFP. Thankfully I’m in a state where reproductive healthcare is decent but we may move in the next year or two to a state where that may not be the case. I’d say I’m a TTA 0 or 1 at the moment. How have you thought about this and your decision to use FAM/NFP methods (or not)?
Hi folks, does NaPro work on people who are infertile due to age, or do you need a specific diagnosis like PCOS (which I'm probably too old to have).
What are it's solutions for POI Primary Ovarian Insufficiency due to advanced age.
I'm 43 and still not married and it's always been my dream to get married and have kids. I'm a newer Christian exploring my options for denominations. The majority religion where I live is Catholic and I don't want to go into it knowing I'm going to sin.
At my age, even IVF isn't recommended without a donor embryo. Please advise.
Hi All, we are getting married in two weeks time. We have started learning about NFP. We would like to have sex on wedding night without using contraception but uncertain which tools we need to achieve this.
We have a basal thermometer. Wife to be is struggling to chart cm/fluid. Would CB monitor and Marquette method be a good idea for us starting out?
Wedding night is about day 8 of her cycle (3 days after period end) so we realise we need to be quite careful. Current understanding is that if cm/fluid is fertile on wedding night, we will have to abstain.
Would a CB monitor be able to tell us if cm/fluid is fertile by reading oestrogen levels?
I’m writing this from the point of view from someone starting FAM in the UK. I wanted to see how others are feeling who globally practice FAM and NFP.
I’m completely shaken by the idea of Trump and his team stripping away women’s rights to safe pregnancy, the choice of abortion for those who may require it and contraception. Is it likely that FAM/ NFP will be taken away too?
Is this making people more scared to get pregnant, and practicing FAM/ NFP when TTA in case of accidental pregnancy? I’m worried that if he wins, this will impact the rest of the world’s view on safe pregnancy too.
I’m so scared for all the women based in the US, and the implications on the rest of the world. On one hand it may help boost FAM/ NFP practices but if there are failures then this could still result in unsafe pregnancies for women and this could reduce the number of women willing to even risk getting pregnant and so reducing their want to practice FAM/ NFP. Even if it doesn’t impact the willingness to practice FAM/NFP, and you successfully proceed TTC, does this worry you about carrying a child to term safely?
I feel so awful knowing that a lot of people in this group are being affected negatively, and that women’s rights are being regressed. What are people’s thoughts around this? I know this isn’t truly the scope of this group, but I’m truly interested to hear how this is impacting others.
Hey all, wondering if anyone has any insight or if it happens to you as well. My CM doesn’t seem to try up after ovulation. I track with CM, cervical position, and OPK strips to know when I ovulate. Last cycle I was seeing a RE and she did a day 21 progesterone and I also had an ultrasound done where they confirmed ovulation. My CM did not dry through the couple days before ovulation all the way until my period. Any thoughts on why this might be? My cycle was also pretty short at 26 days (I’m usually anywhere between 28-32 days). TIA!
Hi all,
We're going on 10 years of MM. I'm postpartum with our second child. TTA for now. My understanding of the monitor was that the first test in a cycle takes a baseline measurement and so would never be "high" (could be peak because that's more objective). We've now gotten our third round of the first test saying "high". My poor husband is so frustrated. Am I just wrong about the baseline thing and we need to suck it up? Or is there potentially something wrong with our monitor? Has anyone else had this happen? TIA
I very rarely see CM when wiping. I typically see it in my underwear. I believe I have read in this sub that CM on underwear is not a reliable check? However TCOYF does mention observing your underwear. Is this an acceptable check in other methods?
I mostly ask because yesterday was a day I would have initially marked as dry/no cm after 2 days of EWCM(wet/lube sensation had also significantly decreased) . However, in the evening, I checked my cervical position(this is not something I do regularly and I’m still learning what exactly I’m feeling)and I had a considerable amount of EWCM.
Do I need to start checking my cervix more regularly because of this? Or should I keep my current observation method?
This is my second cycle off HBC. CM is making much more sense this cycle but now I’m worried I will mark a day ‘dry’ when it is actually EW.
(No pun intended…) Just got my Kyleena IUD removed yesterday after having it for just shy of 5 years (on the pill for 4 years before that), and now switching to FAM to prevent pregnancy
If you’ve removed your hormonal IUD (or got off the pill), when did your cycle start to regulate again? When did you notice a change? How was your time coming off of it? I’d love to hear some experiences!
I’m not relying on FAM methods just yet as I make the transition, but I am already tracking to make it my daily routine. And I know everyone is different, just curious!🤗
My partner and I are into vaginal fisting, and I’ve been concerned this impacts my mucous readings.
I rarely see very clearly fertile quality CM.
Does anyone have any experience with this? Should I be tracking something related to this and my CM?
I bought this monitor recently and today is day 1 of my first cycle using it. I noticed the into button is navy blue on the manual's pictures, but mine is grey. It won't let me put in my cycle information for today either by clicking on October 30 or by clicking on the info button.
Hi everyone!
I would like to preface this by saying that my means of temp tracking are not ideal (I wear an Apple Watch to bed every night and use the health app to track my temperature). I also use cervical position and CF to narrow down ovulation and have pretty regular and predictable periods.
within the past month I was clinically evaluated and diagnosed with adhd and started taking 10mg adderall xr most days. The meds have been life changing although I have noticed that my temperature recording in the health app became way more erratic and unpredictable during my follicular phase and it appears that I ovulated way later in the month than usual (around day 25), my average cycle is about 30 days
Are there any medicated adhd’rs on here that can weigh in on how stimulants have impacted their hormonal cycle/charting?
Thank you!!😊
