FAM (Fertility Awareness Method- Secular) and NFP (Natural Family Planning- Religious Roots) both encompass Fertility Awareness Based Methods of Body Literacy. They can be used to avoid pregnancy, conceive, or assess general health.

This subreddit is a space to discuss these methods, share charts, and support others on their body literacy journeys.

This subreddit is not intended to replace learning a method for yourself or medical advice.

Hi, FAM fans!

The fertility awareness method (FAM) is highly beneficial for any uterus-having person who wants to educate themselves about their body. Even for people who have no interest in using the method for avoiding or achieving pregnancy, it is still an empowering means of taking control of your gynecological health.

FAM is not a good method for everyone as a method of birth control. It is only appropriate for those who have the discipline to learn the method well, and the relationship security to follow the rules once they understand them. It is also only recommended for monogamous couples, given the danger of AIDS and other STDs.

As a method of pregnancy achievement, it is highly advised as the first step that every couple should take to maximize their chances of conception, and to determine if there may be anything impeding their ability to get pregnant. Fertility awareness can be very effective in helping couples plan the timing of their baby's birth.

This group is a space for people with questions about FAM or for people who use FAM to discuss it openly.

Ovulation signs are confusing, help needed!

Hi there! I am relatively new to TCOYF but have read the book cover to cover and continue to check sample charts. I have lean PCOS and in the last 6 months or so have managed to get my cycle to a consistent 33 - 37 days, with the exception of a 6 week time period where I had bleeding every two weeks. This inspired me to purchase a temp drop and a friend introduced me to TCOYF.  It's been fascinating!

Background:

  • My April cycle was pretty typical (lower temps with a sharp rise on Day 18), however my EWCM came AFTER my temp shift. It clearly didn't result in a pregnancy so here we are trying again.
  • My current cycle (pic here) I haven't confirmed ovulation yet. By other method's standards, I can assume ovulation happened on Day 19 or earlier, but by TCOYF standards, I haven't even ovulated yet. I'm too early to know the third high temp and Day 16's temp spike is preventing me from drawing a clean cover line since it's within the previous 6 days (Day 16 temp is not due to alcohol, traveling or illness)

What do you all make of this considering my CM, "ovulatory spotting" (which I've never had before, I usually just got the side sharp pain), and knowing I use temp drop as my BBT device?

Thanks so much for your help!

Mouthbreathing and Temping

Hi, I have recently realized I breathe through my mouth when I’m sleeping (which is a whole other thing I need advice on) and I was wondering how and if breathing this way will disrupt my oral temping in the morning? Should I try another temping method?

PSA

If you don't want creeps and perverts in this subreddit, do not answer their questions. Every time a creep comes here and actually gets his question answered, he learns that perverted behavior doesn't matter because he'll still get what he wants.

What happened to don't feed the trolls?

Edit: Sorry if this posted multiple times. When I clicked submit, it said that it didn't post so I had to click it again and now I am seeing that it did actually post.

can depo affect my cycle years later if i got on the pill after stopping depo?

hello! i’ve finally made the decision to get off HBC after ~6 years of being on it. i was on it for a year or 2 inconsistently around ages 15-16 then when i was 18 i got the depo shot. i was on that for about a year and a half. after the shot i decided to get on the pill. there were some months where i just wouldn’t take a pack or would forget a pill so i would take 2 the next time i was supposed to take it. there were some times i’d forget to take it 3-4 days in a row. i was advised to take 3ish pills when i’d get ovarian cysts to try and stop the bleedinf, which was only a handful of times. so all that combined i feel like i’ve put my body through the wringer. i want to try and get pregnant next year and decided now would be a good time to get off the pill so i could get my cycles back on track but now i’m worried because i went on the pill directly after being on depo my body could take even longer getting back to normal. i know i will just have to wait and see. it’s been about 4 years since my last depo shot. does anybody have an idea of what i should expect from my cycle? can the depo shot still affect me if it’s been 4 years? before HBC my cycle was regular so i’m hoping it will go back to that but learning about how depo affects fertility and your cycle longer than the pill is giving me a lot of anxiety.

Natural Cycles accuracy?

I usually track my cycles with Flo which has always been pretty accurate for me since I’m fairly regular. I did recently buy an oura ring to help with my awareness of sleep and other things.

I know the oura ring takes your temp everyday and can track cycles and flo predicted my ovulation to be the same day I had a temp drop a few weeks ago.

Well now I’m late on my period and I was worried at first until my doc told me a few days ago that mounjaro can change your cycles. I downloaded natural cycles so I can see an actual graph and it said I ovulated WAY later than I thought. Of course I had intercourse the day before natural cycles said I ovulated. Now I’m worried I could be pregnant. (I’m not physically in a condition where that would be best for me)

And was wondering if anyone here has experience with the accuracy of natural cycles or potentially able to interpret charts.

Postpartum NFP Help Needed

Would love some input from people familiar with the Marquette postpartum protocol! I’ve worked with a Marquette instructor but she didn’t really have answers.

I’m 4 months postpartum and have been using Marquette method NFP since 2019. I’m exclusively breastfeeding my baby, but ovulated at 5 weeks postpartum, so I’m technically in cycle 1. I haven’t ovulated since then, so it’s been a 3 month cycle 1 so far. According to the Marquette instructor I’ve worked with, the only thing to do is abstain from sex until after ovulating again. This is my second baby and a similar thing happened with my first where I ovulated at 4 weeks postpartum then didn’t ovulate again until 6 months postpartum, so to follow the Marquette protocol we had to abstain from sex for 5 months. My husband and I don’t want to use any forms of contraception, and we’re hoping to avoid getting pregnant right now.

Are there any NFP protocols that would have a way of hormone testing or temperature testing to identify likely infertile days instead of just waiting for another ovulation?

Lost my copy of TCOYF, can anyone help me find charts typical for pregnancy?

I don’t have access to the book yet I’m waiting for my new copy in the mail! I’ve been trying to finds charts positive for pregnancy but Google isn’t being helpful, and I couldn’t find examples on the TCOYF website. Thank you!!!

Can you do a FAM method while breastfeeding?

I EBF besides a bottle of pumped milk once or twice a day so I can sleep or have some me time. I got my period back at six weeks. Every birth control I’ve tried has either made me depressed or made me gain weight like crazy. I have migraines with aura so I can only use progesterone based birth controls or the copper IUD. I’m 3, almost 4, months postpartum. I’ve been trying to find information about this online but can’t find much. I do have PCOS so I know it’s a little more risky but we’re okay with that. Thank you!

Using Proov Confirm PdG Tests as a Back Up/Additional Marker that Ovulation has Passed??

Does this actually work? I personally practice the Justisse Method (TTA0), and have for a few years now, but I’m curious about this. I’ve previously seen a few people post in here that they will use one of these PdG urine tests to confirm that ovulation has passed and they were in their Luteal Phase. I realize this would be essentially an “off-label” use of these, but would this actually accurately depict such?

With Justisse I use Temperature, CM, and sometimes Cervical position (as an additional/optional) fertility marker, but with summer coming up, I spend a lot of time at the beach, in the ocean, and in the pool—which are not the most conducive environments for tracking cervical mucus and I would love to have another additional marker to know that Ovulation has passed, im in LP and I can go UP. Or would this be unreliable in utilizing these this way, and I’m just better off doing barrier methods throughout all of my cycles during the summer?

How did you get into FAM/NFP?

Hi!

As far as I know, nothing like this has been posted recently, so if this is redundant, please forgive me.

I'm always intrigued by how women learn about the existence of FAM/NFP and decide it's something they want to do. On the flipside, it's very concerning to see newer "users" trying to avoid pregnancy without knowing the basic principles of fertility awareness or actually following a method.

With that in mind, I think it would be fun and helpful to have a thread with personal experiences as well as users' favorite resources. :)

How did you get into charting? Did you decide to learn from an instructor, or did you self-teach? What resources did you find helpful, and were there resources that were harmful or misleading?

How did you choose your method? Did you change methods, and if so, what did you learn during the process? What were the pros and cons of your different methods?

Subreddit Rule Update - “Is This Positive?” Posts

The mods have decided to limit posts of ovulation or pregnancy tests without connection to a chart or FAM/NFP related content.

Standalone posts of “is this LH/Pregnancy test positive?” or “does anyone see a line?” will not be allowed - please report and help us redirect users to the appropriate subreddits (eg r/lineporn or r/tfablineporn).

Currently, pictures of LH and pregnancy tests as used in a FAM/NFP method will be allowed if it is alongside other data (temp chart, cervical fluid chart/classifications, etc.) in the post or comments.

There will be lots of grace as the subreddit makes this pivot, but eventually we will have warnings and temporary bans for repeat offenders.

Alternative to Tempdrop

I have gone through two tempdrops in the past seven years. The first lasted 3 years then I got pregnant with my first. I shelved it basically until my first period postpartum but when I got it out even after a new battery the thing would just not stay on through the night. Bought a second one Summer of 2021 and got pregnant may of 2023. So shelved the new one and pulled it out to start charting again about six week postpartum (around February). Even with a new battery I’ve run into the same issue. The thing went from not staying on through the night to not turning on at all, even when trying various brands of new batteries.

Needless to say, I brought up wanting to buy another and my husband is grumpy because they are so expensive yet the lifespan is lacking. Is my only option going back to a manual bbt thermometer?

I follow Sensiplan to avoid and I’ve toyed with the idea of switching to a mucus only method but I am a solid TTA0 right now and mucus only seems too risky.

I’m just really disappointed in the quality of my tempdrops and I’m hesitant to sink another $150 in a device that won’t last. Any suggestions are welcome.

How important is it to take my temperature at exactly the same time every day?

I work in food service and wake up at 4:30am the majority of the week. I would LOVE to not wake up at 4:30 on my days off to take my temperature. It looks like wearable devices are either unreliable or too expensive, so I’ll be doing it orally for this cycle at least. Can I get away with taking my temp whenever I naturally wake up on my days off even if it’s a little later?

BBT tracking with inconsistent schedule

I’ve been prescribed progesterone to take during my luteal phase, so I need to start temping to confirm ovulation. The problem is that I work in food service management and wake up at 4:30am four to five days out of the week.

I REALLY don’t want to have to wake up at 4:30 to take my temperature on my rare days off, so I’m leaning towards a wearable device. Any suggestions for something comfortable that won’t break the bank? I think I’d prefer a watch-type device over an armband. I’m considering an Apple Watch just for comfort and convenience but it’s a little pricy.

Symptoms post iud removal

Has anyone experienced flu like symptoms after getting your iud removed? I got mine out about 3 weeks ago and I’ve been feeling tired a lot which I heard is common but haven’t felt sick for 3-4 days. Also very likely I could just be sick and they are related😆

Also, what other symptoms did you experience and when did they go away?

Addyi and FEMM

Hi all! Went of HBC, after 12 years on it, exactly 2 years ago and have had quite a low libido ever since. I don’t have trouble during the act, but find it super hard to get aroused and no longer get the “butterfly” feeling. I don’t think about it ever except for thinking how I wish I still desired it. It’s super sad and I feel like it’s beginning to affect my relationship with my fiance. I’ve been through a bunch of hormone testing, and all is well on that front. For a bit I was on T cream since that was low, and it eventually regulated itself. Normal levels of stress. While I love it, FEMM contributed I believe since I was so careful at first and wouldn’t engage in any sex for so much of the month. We got into a bit of a rut as a result.

Anyway, I’m on a mission to solve this and am exploring Addyi. Does anyone have any experience using it while practicing FEMM or any types of FAM? Does it affect your cycle at all? Any and all input and feedback is welcome!

Note: I much prefer not to put anything unnatural into my body, so if there are holistic remedies/supplements anyone knows of, please contribute!

Instructor?

Hi, Delete this if this isn’t allowed. I am interested in starting FAM & looking for an instructor. I’m on a budget. Someone just quoted me $500- is this the running rate?

I plan on tracking using temperatures and CM (sympto thermal method???). Looking for guidance on that to make sure I do it in the most effective way possible.
