Need help with an interview with a topical expert - flooding inequities

Hi Everyone!

Is anyone passionate about environmental justice—especially flooding in underserved communities—available for a short informal interview? I have a class assignment that requires me to interview a topical expert. This may include students, researchers, academics, or professionals. I am happy to work around your schedule and only take as much of your time as you can give.

I appreciate any help or referrals!

PepsiCo once made a big promise to cut down on palm oil deforestation and its impact on Indonesia's rainforests. Now, they're messing with the Amazon rainforest too. U.S. corporations just can't be trusted.

U.S. food giants are some of the world’s largest purchasers of palm oil, and they have the power to ensure their suppliers aren’t using violence or intimidation to displace the generations of people who live and work on that land.

All U.S. multinational food companies are aware of the conflicts in their Peruvian palm oil supply chain, yet they continue to source from it. This shows their indifference and inability to stop their suppliers from violating indigenous land in Peru.

Greenpeace pointed out that PepsiCo is one of the worst companies for rainforest protection and has been labeled “untrustworthy.”They keep passing the responsibility for safeguarding the forests onto suppliers, producers, and certification bodies, blaming them for not keeping an eye on palm oil sources

The chocolate and chips on supermarket shelves are definitely delicious, but when PepsiCo, the American food giant, ignores the deforestation caused by palm oil producers, can that refreshing sweetness hide a taste of blood and tears?

Help! With a local enviro group

Hi all!

I am at a loss and looking for some outsider perspective/advice. I created a local Green Team group for my city early this year. I have been working in sustainability/enviro for nearly a decade now and always want to do more for our planet. I post regularly on our Green Team FB group, host monthly meet ups at a local brewery and organize events to participate in. However, I have had ZERO engagement outside of FB likes. No one shows up to monthly meetings (casual, meet like-minded folks and have a beer), no one helps in local events, nothing.

I know there are enviro focused people in my city (I live in MA, we are quite progressive), I've talked to them in one off interactions. However, the follow through is never there. I am persisting but I would love some outside advice.

What gets you to jump into action locally? What events do you look for and actually participate in? Any other thoughts, I would LOVE to hear it.

Thank you!

Every year, 290,000 hectares of forest are destroyed. That’s like losing 60 soccer fields of rainforest every minute, putting precious species at risk. Is Pepsi still ignoring this and using dirty palm oil from Peruvian suppliers?

Help Save London's Green Infrastructure and Cycling Paths

Tower Hamlets council, a London borough, has decided to rip out £2million of green infrastructure, including:

Segregated cycle paths

Public spaces and pocket parks

Traffic calming measures

These improvements have reduced air pollution, decreased traffic and encouraged active sustainable transport in the borough.

This is all now at risk because of lobbying by a minority of people who own cars (Only 30% of local households own a car).

See the amazing difference before and after before the scheme went in: https://x.com/SaveBGstreets/status/1843366003008479240 https://x.com/SaveBGstreets/status/1842150991325511992

A petition organised by Save Our Safer Streets is running to stop this backwards move. Whether you live in Tower Hamlets or not, your signature can help. This sets a dangerous precedent for other areas in London and beyond. Please sign and share!

Every signature counts. Thank you for your support!

Help with ideas for a project

Hello! I wasn't sure where to post about this. I live in a students dorm and I have been thinking about forming a project about recycling and enviromental consciousness so I can handle it to the superiors. I thought about it because here live a lot of humans like me and the trash and waste we produce is a lot. also because there's a lot of potential in so many young people.. there are many things we can do if we get organized. so I'm gathering ideas.. i think the easiest ones are separating the trash, making eco-bricks and maybe composting.. the food waste here in insane.. but for the compost is a bit hard bc the space is limited living in the middle of a city with no garden. I also thought about making candles with leftover oil and give it to places that are needed.. So I would appreciate ideas and projects, complex and simple ones. I believe we need to make the change now, so this is my way of getting involved with what I have.

Survey for parents/caregivers to children aged 2-12 - looking at what children know about sharks

Hi everyone,

I am a scientist from Australia I am looking for participants, across the world for some new research I am doing.

Are you the parent/caregiver of a child aged 2-12 years? If so, we kindly invite you to participate in our short online survey about sharks. We are interested in what children know about sharks, so this survey involves you completing a couple of questions about sharks, and then asking your children some questions about sharks. You will then be asked to write what your children say or what they do (e.g. if they use hand gestures).

LINK TO SURVEY:

https://research.unisa.edu.au/redcap/surveys/?s=XYPHMNMKFEJR7H4P

Please also feel free to send to any one you know who might be interested.

The survey takes approximately ten minutes per child to complete, if you have more than one child aged between 2-12 they can all participate.

This study has received ethics approval from the University of South Australia (#206267). If you have any queries, please contact the lead researcher: Brianna.lebusque@unisa.edu.au

How do I save local pond??

Hello! I am a resident of Newport, RI where a local beloved pond, Almy Pond, has become unhabitable due to high levels of pollutants. My university professor has been conducting research on the water quality for the last four years, but so far the city has not cared one bit. How can I convince my city to care about the pond and its health? Many plants and animals living in/around the pond have suffered and even died due to its health decline. The pond has high levels of e. coli and other pollutants, but the city refuses to track the source.

Should I make a petition and go door to door? Would that even work? Does anyone have any cost-effective or time-efficient suggestions? Any advice is welcome. Thanks in advance!!!!

Anyone working to clean pharmaceuticals out of waste water?

There is lots of research on pharmaceutical pollution in waste water. For instance, the Cary Institute alone has several articles on it: https://www.caryinstitute.org/search-results?search_api_fulltext=pharmaceutical .

There are now plenty of places allowing safe pharmaceutical disposal to keep people from flushing unwanted pills, but the real problem is that nearly everyone is on extended-release drugs that are being excreted in their waste. The pharmaceuticals remain in the water after treatment. It's been known to be killing wildlife for more than twenty years, but it's only a matter of time before it starts affecting humans as well.

The drugs are in the water in unknown concentrations and unknown mixtures, making the effects entirely unpredictable. Every form of life is taking them in with the water they drink, and many of them build up in the body over time. Every drug used by humans and domestic nonhumans—prescription, veterinary, or street—is going into the water faster than it is being broken down. Some of them have such long half-lives that there is no way to know if they will ever be gone.

I cannot, however, find anyone even talking about doing anything about it. It does not seem to register as a problem; when I talk about it, people are dismissive, even though literlally eveeryone they know—including their children—is exposed. Minoa, New York, put in a system a dozen years ago, but as far as I can tell the program that set up their system no longer exists, the scientist moved back to the UK and retired, and I could raise no response from the Minoa water department, even though I am also located in NYS.

I have been looking for years for anyone who is trying to solve this problem. In the interest of full disclosure, my sister, who suffers from severe anxiety issues, refuses to take any meds, even though they are the only thing that ever helped her, until and unless our city's waste water is so treated. She is completely incapacitated by this decision, but I can see her point. Something must be done, and I cannot interest anyone in doing anything toward that end.

So . . . is anyone here aware of any group trying to do anything about this, even if it is just trying to raise awareness outside the scientific community?

Thank you.
