Company is using satellite imagery and AI to count elephants from space

Did you know people are using satellites and AI to keep track of African elephants now? I found this company on the Internet called SkyFi and they have a technology that uses AI and satellite imagery to count and keep track of elephants in Africa. How cool is that? Has anyone ever heard of something like this?

Dramatic Face to Face with a Mama Elephant

When elephants are giving a warning, their behavior includes several distinct signals to communicate their discomfort or threat. Here are some common warning behaviors:

  1. Ear Flapping: Elephants may flap their ears to appear larger and more intimidating. This also helps them regulate their body temperature, but in the context of a warning, it serves as a visual signal.

  2. Trunk Swings and Sniffs: An elephant may swing its trunk or lift it to sniff the air, assessing the potential threat. The trunk may also be pointed towards the intruder as a direct warning.

  3. Trumpeting: A loud trumpeting sound is a clear vocal warning. This noise can be startling and is meant to deter potential threats.

  4. Pawing the Ground: Elephants may paw the ground with their front feet, creating dust clouds and demonstrating their size and strength.

  5. Head Shaking: A head shake can indicate agitation and is often accompanied by other warning signs.

  6. Mock Charges: Elephants might perform mock charges where they run a short distance towards the threat before stopping abruptly. This is meant to scare off the intruder without engaging in a full attack.

  7. Body Posture: An elephant might stand tall, with a rigid and tense body posture, often positioning itself between the threat and the rest of the herd, especially if there are young calves present.

"What is looking rather funny isn't a photoshop trick! This day the zoo was open till quite late and when the sun was set, projectors with blue filters were lit in many of the enclosures, including the elephant one, I thought it would be nice to take a photograph of it!
