Alt Country - "Because punk-rock is too hard to sing."
"Alternative Country" is a rather ambiguous term that can mean a wide variety of music to an even wider range of people but here's wikipedia's definition of Alternative Country. And these are just some examples:*

It has been pointed out that "alt" means "old" in German; and it's been pointed out that alt country might be the real heirs to the old Johnny Cash tradition...
"It's not alt. country. It's called 'Country.'"

The Moran Tripp Band are putting out a vinyl record for their new album coming out this February called Jumpers Hole! For those that don’t know, my brother Shane Tripp plays lead guitar in the group. If you or someone you know collects vinyl tell them about this local Maryland band. The genre ranges from southern jam blues rock to country, bluegrass, and a touch of soul/jazz rock. The record is being pressed by Pour House Pressing in Raleigh, NC! I got to listen to the test press and it’s killer. Here’s the link for it.

Blue Rodeo’s Jim Cuddy.
Hope you find something in here that you've never heard before. Happy New Year ✌️🤠
And Happy Birthday Country Joe
Steve Young’s version is my favorite of the many, many covers of this song. Yes, even like it more than Tyler’s 😀 This take is a bit different than his album cut (also worth seeking out), but you can feel the years of experience in this one a lot more.
Whenever ‘most underrated’ conversations come around, my answer is always Steve Young.
Apparently this album came out in 2023 and I somehow missed it.

My 2024 in live music was 40 shows across 4 states. Compared to the previous 2 years 2024 was a slower year for live music but, at the same time, 40 shows was exhausting at times. Some shows of note:
Best show of the year: It is a tie. Joe Pug in Chicago. This show was at the Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago and was recorded for a live album that will be coming out in April of 2025. Great venue. Great city. Great show. The other was Sierra Ferrell show at The Analogue Room. It is a rare moment you get to see Sierra in a 300 capacity room these days and, visually, The Analogue Room is tough to top. The show was being recorded for a show on PBS and the band was on fire. If your local PBS runs the "Live From The Analouge Room" show and you see this one, look for me, I am stage right, front row.
Most interesting thing I saw: Kublai Khan TX headlined a sold-out show at the Brooklyn Bowl. Despite having sold out the venue the band hauled out their own equipment and setup their own stage and lighting rig after the opening acts.
**Most "**this is Nashville" moments: Two of these really stood out this year. Elizabeth Cook at The 5 Spot. For those that don't know, The 5 Spot is this little sub-200 capacity room in East Nashville. This show was a friends and family only show that also served as a rehearsal for their show at the Caverns being recorded for PBS. The other show was the Ward Davis and Cody Jinks show at The Ryman. This was a no frills show. No openers. No light show. No bands. Just Cody and Ward playing acoustic on bar stools in the round for almost 3 hours. Apparently this was 1 of only 2 shows they were doing like this in the continental US.
Here was everything I managed to see this year:
something in the same vein as early will oldham maybe? more acoustic leaning with minimal production?
Of an honest peanut farmer by the name of Jimmy Carter.
You can name a few if you want. But, best because of the whole album is great, not just 1 song.
Jimmy Carter has passed away at 100 years of age
These guys have been doing small stuff. Last night they had sort of a coming out party @ Tally Ho. Members include players from Low Water Bridge Band and Jake Kohn’s band. Pretty awesome set!

It’s got it all. The great tunes from this year plus great artist discovery. Highly recommended.
