Considering a 2018 Clarity, questions about using EV for my commute

So I’m about to start a new job and I’ll be working out of an office 55 miles away 3 days a week (thankfully the drive is mostly interstate). The parking garage I’ll be at has level 1/2 chargers and I can charge overnight at my house ($0.15 per kWh, is that good?). That being said, if I got a 2018 Clarity, is EV driving even worth it with this vehicle or should I just go straight HV? And if that’s the case shouldn’t I get a higher mpg hybrid like an Insight? Thanks for the help!

Edit: Just wanted to thank you all for the help, I really appreciate it. Based off of the comments I will be heavily considering a Clarity since it is technically an 40-mile range EV for a good price. I would go full EV if I could but that is definitely still outside of my budget and I’m not looking to finance! Thanks!

2 years since last oil change

Looking to buy a 2021 Clarity. The carfax reported the following information:

2/12/21 30 miles sold

12/22/21 4,116 miles maintenance inspection completed

7/19/22 7,238 miles tires rotated

2/10/23 9180 miles maintenance inspection, oil and filter changed.

According to carfax, the first oil and filter change was 2 years after the car was first sold.

Is this a red flag?

Should I get the Honda care extended warranty for a used 2021 clarity with 11,800 miles?

Electric Engine fully depleted. Using ICE only. Car sluggish

Usually 2 bars left on electric motor and car switch to HV. Now battery is fully drained and car struggles using only ICE. Don’t think this is normal. Anyone having this issue. 2019 PHEv with 99k.

Thank you to whoever mentioned the alternative layout option. I think this feels so much better!

I cannot believe I’ve went this long without using it, having larger buttons and quick keys for the info panel is super useful. I also didn’t realize it changes how the settings menu looks. I feel it looks a lot more modern than the stock civic looking theme. I just couldn’t keep the frutiger aero background though

Should I sell?

Hello, I was thinking if I should sell my Clarity mainly because it’s discontinued. I worry about future repairs and parts. The car has been great to me I bought a touring trim for 17k at 17k miles. Currently at 68k miles.

I’m loosely looking for a new car but I’m mainly waiting refresh and release of things like the Lexus ES refresh or a compelling EV offering.

Just wondering your guys thoughts and perspective. Thanks.

Infotainment Unit - Ideas?

I originally posted this at InsideEV's and XDA, but thought I'd try my luck here as well:

So I've really gone and screwed myself over this time. I had a minor accident and had taken my Clarity in to a body shop for some minor cosmetic repairs. Unfortunately, they apparently (at some point in the repair process) disconnected the battery long enough to trigger the infotainment's anti-theft power loss state. Even more unfortunately, my infotainment center — previously damaged in an unrelated incident — does not have a working touch digitizer, meaning my on-screen touch buttons are not functional, which made it exceedingly difficult to find a way to bypass the anti-theft screen, as the only way to do so was to use the non-functioning Audio power key. And lastly, and most unfortunately, in my quest to find a method to programmatically send the equivalent keycode/sendevent, I unwittingly thought to wipe the unit's data partition in the hopes that it would reset the anti-theft feature's active state; however, not only did it fail to do so, I inadvertantly wiped my network configuration off the headunit...which also meant losing my wireless ADB authorization. And without access to the touch screen and nor ADB to send any additional inputs, I've basically gone and tossed out my only method of accessing the headunit at all now. I've done derped myself good!

So I'm now back to sqare one (minus one). Any ideas what I should do? Besides biting the bullet and replacing the head unit altogether, that is? I'm already subscribed to most of the local yards so as soon as a Clarity gets junked around here, I'll jump on its carcass. Until then, I'm considering an aftermarket unit or something, but not sure if there'll be any unanticipated problems with that?

Approaching from the other angle, is there perhaps any way I can still bypass the anti-theft mode? I had pretty much scoured and read through all of the unit's .kl / input device / keymaps / etc file contents and tried all of the keyevent codes I was able to find. The problem was I wasn't able to get it to work in deactivating the anti-theft mode, whether because the power key event was some other non-standard input that differed from keyevent 26, or because I was unable to successfully emulate a longpress sendevent correctly for the system to accept it (and being pre-Kitkat, the input function does not yet include the --longpress argument.

Side notes: interestingly enough, I've found several system activities are able to bypass the anti-theft block and supercede focus on the screen. These include, but likely aren't limited to: the climate control module UI, the lane-watch module camera UI, and the contacts application UI (I can't recall if this was invoked by the standard keyevent 207 or if there was a custom keyevent code off the top of my head). Unfortunately, it seems the former bypass method of accessing the system settings UI by first activating these screens appear to be patched out now (except for the Contacts UI as I did not think to test that at the time, and now no longer have the capability to do so).

Limited Regen Even at Low State of Charge

I've noticed a strange issue with my car recently where it has limited regen even when the battery is not very full. Whether I use the regen paddle or tap the brake pedal, I can only get up to 25 kW regen, which is about half of its typical max capability. A reboot will fix the issue temporarily, but it's becoming more frequent - happening 3 times in the past two weeks. I haven't seen anyone else report similar issues.

I'm suspecting this to be a battery system issuse since i cannot get above 25 kW even in HV mode with both brake and engine on (you would think this will give you 25 kW from regen and plus whatever excess energy the engine is generating)

Does anyone have any ideas on what might be causing this? I doubt the dealer can provide any insight since there are no warning lights or error codes, and it only happens occasionally.

Aftermarket Upgrade Options

What aftermarket upgrades have you made to your Clarity? I'm curious about options like:

  • Ventilated seats.
  • Heated steering wheel.
  • Auto-dimming side-view mirrors.
  • Wireless Android Auto / Apple CarPlay.
  • Speakers.

What niceties have you added?

Best model year?

Looking at picking up a Honda Clarity Touring in the next week or so. Are there any particular nuisances to be aware of across model years?

Several 2018 available in my area that are $5-$8k cheaper than 2020 or 2021. The 2018s are well within the limit to qualify for the Federal EV tax credit but the 2021 models would take a good bit of haggling to get the dealer down under the $25k threshold for eligibility.

I see that Honda has recently issued a recall for fuel pump. Has anyone here actually experienced failure or issue with their fuel pump?

Appreciate any help/advice.

Lower splash guard replacement

Where are we buying replacement parts these days? Had an oil change done just over a month ago and my wife just called me saying that there’s a loud scraping… took some pics and it appears that the splash guard underneath was loose and now is bent and scraping on the pavement. While it’s almost certainly due to not being tightened during the last oil change, I doubt they’ll do anything considering it was a month ago.

Looked up part 74110-TRW-A00 and it’s $300 everywhere… which means it’ll be $500 at the dealer.

Has anyone replaced this and can direct me if there’s anywhere to get a better price?

Anyone have a head gasket failure?

Found out that the engine on the Clarity has slits between cylinders instead of cross drills, seems suspiciously similar to the Ford's that have had failed head gaskets because of a similar design. Some other Honda 1.5L engines (turbocharged) seem to be facing head gasket failures. As our cars continue to get older I am curious to know if the head gasket will be a point of failure for the Clarity and Insight.

Slow Defrost

Does anyone else experience slow defrost on the windshield? My 2019 Clarity seems to take forever to defrost compared to other vehicles I own or have owned. Curious if it’s just me or if it’s a common experience with other owners.

Fumoto Valve On Transmission

I just did an oil and transmission fluid change on my Clarity so i wanted to share some insight on these valves.

Swapping out the oil bolt was very easy, as expected. The valve fits perfectly with no extension. I used the F106SX so I could adjust what direction the valve was pointing. It should make future oil changes trivial and the less time I'm spending under the car, the better.

The transmission bolt swap was more difficult. I did some digging and figured out the treads for the transmission pan (18mm-1.5). So I ordered the FG25X and thankfully it fit. The problem though is that it constantly leaked. The O-Ring for some reason wouldn't seal properly against the housing, even when over torqued. My fix was to replace and use a crush washer instead (18mm). It sealed up perfectly after that. Also, no need for an extensor for this valve either.

Both valves fit under the road cover, and funny enough the holes in the cover perfectly align with the spout of both valves. In theory you might be able to drain them without removing it, but you'll likely make a mess. I also highly recommend you use the included security clips to prevent the drain lever from accidentally getting flipped.

I hope this helps someone.

Level 2 Home Charger recommendations or similar experience with not charging on seimans charger?

We have been using the Siemens level 2 installed outside since 2019 but a few weeks ago car just stopped taking a charge from it. Green light on charger still on. Got the update at the dealer went home and it took a charge then didn't again. App acknowledged it was plugged in but wouldn't start charge. Scheduling was off. Weirdest part is it will still do the climate control function.

Car works on other chargers and dealer tested everything again and determined it must be our home charger. I tested our charger on a tesla and it worked fine. No choice now but to get a new charger, I guess.

Looking at the wallbox Pulsar 2. Has anyone had experience with this charger mounted outside? Are there any other recommendations for an outdoor compatible charger that hopefully lasts more than 5 years. Thanks

Reference for the HV battery test?

Does anyone have the reference for the dealer HV battery test? Like a section or paragraph number for the dealer seething information? Mine is scheduled in for service later this month and I asked for a printout of the Ah capacity. The service writer's response was, "There is unfortunately no way to check the hybrid battery level." and we all know that's BS. Rather than call him out, I'd like to say, "Please take a look at xxx."

Edited to add: I have made the same request to Honda Customer Assistance. If I get anything from them, I'll share it.

Anyone else get the recall notice with the expected part date of Fall 2024?

Got a letter today indicating that the fuel pump won’t be available until Fall 2024? Guess they’re not in a hurry

ETA: this is only for 2018-19 models.

One nice thing about being a niche vehicle... no airbag sensor recall

It sounds like a supplier changed a board material - and I'm guessing that supplier only supplied the board for the weight sensor on North America built vehicles. One time having a niche vehicle built at a small factory in Japan is a win!

Dealer says battery is "good"

Brought clarity in and asked to have I checked over/serviced for 75,000 miles service. They did transmission and brake fluid/service ans verbally said the battery is "good." I asked what it's capacity is, or for some kind of report--but I don't even know if that's a thing? Do I press then? Does this sound like they didn't really check it?
