What is AskModerators?

AskModerators is a venue where users (and other mods) can ask questions about moderation or just reddit in general and have them answered by experienced moderators.

If you have moderation experience and would like contributor flair, please message the mods with a list of the subreddits you mod.

Asking AskModerators

  • Submissions must be phrased as a question. If you would like to host a Q&A session, please do so in /r/ModClub
  • Please make questions as specific as possible, and try to avoid asking questions that can be answered with a simple Google search.
  • If you are looking for a specific subreddit, please try asking /r/findareddit - we don't mod the entirety of the site.
  • Absolutely no links to comments or submissions outside of this subreddit... use screenshots instead.
  • Try to avoid questions about dramatic events. /r/SubredditDrama is usually a better venue for that. If you must discuss these topics, avoid mentioning specific subreddits or usernames.
  • Off-topic or frivolous comments will be removed. If your comment is removed, please do not be offended; we are simply cleaning up the thread to make it easier to read for everyone else.
  • You can also try /r/help if we don't get your problem solved for you.

What action can I take to remove the flag on my IP address / device ID from Reddit systems preventing me to interact with that particular sub ?

How do I remove a subreddit from news feed?

I cant interact with a certain sub (removed details as required by automod) - so I would like to hide that from news. Is there a way to do that?

Does the "Contact the moderators" thing really work?

Hi, so about two months ago, I created an alt account (this is my main account) and made a comment that was apparently against the rules, but I have no idea how. It was so against the rules that I got an instant permaban without any valid reason given to me in the explanation. And I'd only been using it for 3 days. All it said was "Your comment violates our rules". Now I'm kind of not happy because I might get banned for ban evasion on this account, so I tried contacting the moderators twice, once through the notification thread, and once through the "Contact the Moderators" button, in order to find out why my comment was considered against the rules and possibly be unbanned. Neither of those have produced me any results. So, I was wondering if you had any tips on how to contact the mods of a subreddit so I can start commenting without fear of being banned.

How do I find a moderator for a new sub?

Without upsetting mods in existing subs?

I'd like some help moderating and growing r/NewsletterManagers but I've never co-modded a sub before. How do you guys find co-moderators?

How do I submit an appeal,?

I got a warning from Reddit after saying a mansplaining man was mansplaining. The mod removed the wrong comment and then blocked for a week when I pointed out that they were talking about a different comment than the one they deleted.

Hours later when I checked the originally deleted comment has been restored and the other comment has been deleted.

Now I got the Reddit warning which I wish to appeal.

When I click the "file an appeal" link a box pops up. I fill it out and don't see any way to submit it. I've tried googling it to no avail.

How do I submit my appeal?

Thank you for any help that you can offer.

How can I apply for mod?

First of all, apologies for any spelling mistakes, not a native spealer and I just suck at typing in general. So, one of my favourite subreddits ever is having a very difficult recovery from the reddit strikes that happened a while ago (almost a year iirc, damn) and me along with some other users feel like the mods, one of wich started with the goal of reviving the sub, are neglecting it. A few weeks ago I sent a modmail regarding the most glaring issue, , but no reply yet I was wondering if there was a way to apply for mod that the current ones would surely see. They are very active on reddit, just not in the particular sub.

Does this mean a permanent mute?

I tried to message mods on a subreddit and I get this "You have been muted from this subreddit." Is that a permanent mute?

Here's what started this. I post once a week, per the subreddit rules, and basically post the same message. (It is a referral subreddit)

Suddenly, last week, my post starts getting removed by the filter. I have no idea why. So I tried to figure out why and made another post, also gets removed. I then message the moderators and the reply I get is "****Subreddit Rules***** and a ban from messaging moderators for 28 days.

I waited a week and tried to post my message again and same thing.. gets removed by filters.

I messaged the moderators again asking for help Please...

That's when I get the message "You have been muted from this subreddit."

I absolutely have no clue why my post was getting removed in the first place and now have no way of messaging anyone about it.

How can I get out of the hell of inadvertent ban evasion ?

Summary: When you have multiple accounts, it is very easy to perform ban evasion without realizing it just replying to post that you are notified about on account B while you have a ban on account A.

Hi,

I use two accounts on Reddit that subscribe to gaming forums, this one and one account dedicated to my indie game. I got banned for 30 days on r/gaming a month ago for promoting my game. While this was quite harsh (typically, when moderators think you do too much autopromotion, they remove your post / comment), it is the mods decision, and I understand.

Now, I got into trouble by first, 3 weeks ago, replying to a comment on the forum with my game account, which resulted in a permanent ban of that account, but not my main account. This resulted in me being banned 7 days from Reddit.

Yesterday, my 30 days ban on my main account expired, and I also casually replied to a post I was notified to. This resulted now in my main account being permanently banned, and I am very afrraid I will be suspended from Reddit, which is a big issue, because I maintain the community for my two indie games (the one already released and the one coming) on Reddit.

Note that none of the two messages were about promoting my game, just casual gamer conversation.

I think it would be good that Reddit is consistent: if you are banned in one sub, and you have several accounts that are identified as coming from the same person from reddit, it would be much more convenient that all said accounts are consistently banned to avoid mistakes.

Else, even if you are in good faith, it can turn into a mine field.

Now, a question to moderators : how can I get out of this hell ?

Does the authority of a Subreddit's Mod include a complete ban from Reddit?

Can I ask a little bit.

If a mod in r/... subreddit bans you because you spam in this subreddit, will you also be banned totally from reddit ? I mean you will be permanently banned from using Reddit.

If you create any account, they will ban all accounts relevant to you.

If you don't like the mods for your cities reddit page, can you do anything about it?

They are power trippy, have double standards, and don't encourage free speech. One post unrelated to the city is allowed, my post totally related to the city is denied, I think they have had their time and need to be moved on, is there a method for voting them out?

How long should I wait for a reply?

Ive went ahead and messaged the moderators of a subreddit (through thw mailbox icon on the bottom righthand slider). Ive been very humble and friendly in the message, just wanted to ask something related to the subreddit.

Up until now I have not yet received an answer. Is this normal? Should I wait a littlw longer? Should I ask again? Or maybe contact a Mod directly?

Thanks for your help!

Would getting banned from a subreddit affect me in any way outside of reddit?

So recently I got banned from a small-ish but still sizeable subreddit, so could that affect me in any way outside of reddit? (like getting into schools or employment)

Sorry if this seems paranoid

Where to report posts removed by Reddit's spam filters?

Dear moderators,

As two of my posts to Andoid-related subreddits have already been removed by Reddit's spam filters, and my last post here on r/AskModerators — where I tried to make an inquiry about the case — got removed as well, I was wondering where should I seek for an explanation then?

For much I'd like to see where Reddit's spam filters have given me a red flag in order not to repeat the same mistake again (and actually get my posts posted).

Thanks a lot in advance, and I look forward to hearing from you!

Cheers!

Do mods know who reports posts?

There is a mod (one of many, but def the most active) that I have reported his comments as they are against the subs rules. Will that mod get a notification of his own post being reported? And can it be traced back to me? Others in the sub have complained about this mod being punitive, but that’s more on the public comments etc they post.

Also I have used the “report a mod” feature on the most egregious ones

Ban Evasion?

I just got banned from my favourite local sub Reddit for ban evasion. I’ve only ever used this one account, my post was somehow caught up in some ban evasion tool.

Not sure what to do, taken the steps of messaging Reddit administrators.

The whole purpose of using this site is to keep up on local news and events.

I don’t know what I did wrong, I’ve never created a second account, I’m not this person they think I am.

Do mods assume all inquiries are in bad faith or to start problems?

I had a post removed for a non-existent rule. I got told the post should go somewhere else, but I couldn't find anything on the sub explaining this, couldn't find the thread in question, and there were a bunch of other posts just like mine up on the subreddit. I had read all the rules (multiple times) and couldn't find anything about it, so I decided to reach out to the mods. When I reached out to ask some questions trying to figure out what I missed and asking about where I should post instead, the mod(s) were immediately aggressive and wouldn't answer my questions.

I understand that mods don't owe me anything let alone their time, but the outright hostility was completely unwarranted, so I am wondering...do mods not want questions? If you have a post removed and you're unclear as to why, is asking questions and trying to understand the rules genuinely perceived as a bad thing? Do mods assume all questions or requests for explanation/feedback are done in bad faith or to start problems?

If you do assume all questions are bad, how can someone go about understanding the rules and asking questions without triggering this sort of reaction?

Why was my s***post removed by Reddit's filters?

I tried to make a silly post on r/hunterxdank that said "Ever notice that Illumi's eyebrows kinda look like triangles? ILLUMInati confirmed" but it was removed by Reddit's filters. It was just a silly hxh post on a subreddit for silly hxh posts, why was it removed? Is there a chance that I can make it not removed anymore?

URL to the removed post if you're able to access it as a mod: https://www.reddit.com/r/hunterxdank/comments/1bt7wit/ever_notice_how_illumis_eyebrows_kinda_look_like/

Is there a way to fix this issue?

I commented upon a post. Then I blocked the OP because of offensive content. Later, I decided to remove my comment. But the app will not allow me to get back in to the post or my comment so that I may remove it. How can I do this? They are listed under my profile / comments. But they won't allow me access.

How do you see what content violated rules?

How do you see?

I finally managed to get my first ever warning on reddit ever in the history of reddit. Or at least somewhere in about the 10 years I've actually been using it.

So now I don't know how to see what I did wrong lol.

It says it was an automation and I have a warning for harassment and don't do it again.

Ok well I don't harass people on purpose but the thread it goes to is seeing heavy heavy debate. So it's completely possible I shot off at the mouth the wrong way. Or the fingers.

But when I click where it says my shared content it doesn't go anywhere except back to the post. Doesn't show what I posted that was removed and the comment thread it kicks back to doesn't offer a real clue.

I appealed it cause idk how not to do what I don't know i did. Or if I even did anything that qualifies give the context of the whole thing.

But it sure is ironic 😂

But maybe I'm clicking somewhere wrong?

Because to make the report there are three words showing up as hyperlink but only one of them is actually a working link.

Any help is awesome!

Are mods allowed to disable reporting on their sub/s?

I mean disable the report function altogether so nothing can be reported directly to Reddit; the only way to report a comment or post is via mod mail and it can't be done anonymously.

It doesn't seem legit because it means they're basically running the sub without oversight - eg. they can allow content that violates the ToS and Reddit won't find out. It also means they can action users for making reports since there's no anonymity via mod mail. I get that report abuse is a thing, but I'm talking about just differences of opinion - eg. they can ban or mute someone if they disagree with their reason for reporting, even if the user genuinely believed there was a violation.

Seems like the report feature is there and anonymous to prevent this kind of scenario. Should this be reported? If so, how?

TIA.

Should this Moderator be reported?

I was looking up the moderators of a subreddit I frequent and found something extremely unusual.

One of the mod accounts is fairly new (a few months), they don't have any karma whatsoever, and and they have never made a single post or comment in the short time their account has existed.

Yet this blank account mods over 300 different subreddits...

As far as I can tell, most of the subs they mod are far older than their account, so an existing mod must have intentionally made the decision to make this new account a moderator.

I really don't see how this kind of situation could come about legitimately. It seems like this is either a duplicate account from one of the existing mods, or is a replacement account made because the original was suspended. Many of the 300 subs also share a different mod whose account has been suspended, hence my suspicion.

My question is should this account be reported to the Admins or is there an obvious innocent explanation I'm missing here? Thanks.

Sorry, this post was removed by Reddit’s filters?

I am trying to post on a subreddit, but unfortunately, my post gets removed by reddit filters. No matter what I do, the problem still remains. For your information, I have enough karma and have posted twice in the said subreddit with no problem. I have no picture in my post. I have checked it for sensitive words, but I found none. Finally, I have been active there. I have read that you should contact the moderators to handle it manually. However, this is not the real solution. Since when should I contact them? Is there any way to solve the problem? Because, to be honest, this is ridiculous and frustrating.

Do mods have to follow their subreddit rules while moderating a sub's content?

Can mods delete content just because they feel like, or there is a protocol? If yes, then what is the use of the rules? Wouldn't it be better if the mods stated the kind of opinions which are acceptable in the rules list, so that people with differing opinions can avoid such subreddits?
