What is AskModerators?

AskModerators is a venue where users (and other mods) can ask questions about moderation or just reddit in general and have them answered by experienced moderators.

If you have moderation experience and would like contributor flair, please message the mods with a list of the subreddits you mod.

Asking AskModerators

  • Submissions must be phrased as a question. If you would like to host a Q&A session, please do so in /r/ModClub
  • Please make questions as specific as possible, and try to avoid asking questions that can be answered with a simple Google search.
  • If you are looking for a specific subreddit, please try asking /r/findareddit - we don't mod the entirety of the site.
  • Absolutely no links to comments or submissions outside of this subreddit... use screenshots instead.
  • Try to avoid questions about dramatic events. /r/SubredditDrama is usually a better venue for that. If you must discuss these topics, avoid mentioning specific subreddits or usernames.
  • Off-topic or frivolous comments will be removed. If your comment is removed, please do not be offended; we are simply cleaning up the thread to make it easier to read for everyone else.
  • You can also try /r/help if we don't get your problem solved for you.

Where do you stand on ban evasion?

Reddit's official policies says you may not use alternate accounts to circumvent bans. However, they also say it's up to mods to decide whether or not to allow banned users to use a new account to return to subs they're banned from.

Some moderators may be okay with a redditor returning to their community on another account so long as they participate in good faith, as such we only review ban evasion reports when they are reported by the community moderators.

From what I've seen across various online communities, moderators' attitudes towards bans generally fall into two camps:

  1. Bans apply to the person. This makes sense because allowing a banned user to come back on a new account would defeat the purpose of the ban. Signing up for a new account after getting banned is seen as one of the most severe offenses. Some forums even prohibit multiple accounts altogether. If someone is kicked out of an IRL event due to unruly behavior, then putting on a new name tag with a different name on it isn't going to get them back in.

  2. Bans apply to the account. However, there are also some mods that see bans as simply a technical means to prevent participation. The idea is that if a banned user comes back on a new account but stays within the rules to avoid further bans, then the original ban has achieved its purpose. Furthermore, some online communities offer special privileges that require a certain amount of participation over time. A banned person who signs up for a new account can't just continue where they left off.

So I'm curious as to which side other mods are on. Are you on team "banned means banned" or team "mission fucking accomplished"?

Suppose you see someone who you are sure is a previously banned user, but they are now contributing constructively and posting helpful comments. Do you ban them again and report them to the admins? Let them stay as long as they behave? Or does it depend on what the person was originally banned for?

Bonus question: do you consider it ban evasion if someone posts on behalf of a banned user? Reddit apparently doesn't think it's an issue, but this is also often considered a big no-no elsewhere.

How does a subreddit have negative two members?

Juit curious. -2 members????

https://www.reddit.com/r/a:t5_33jkx/

I also seriously doubt that there are three people online reading the single 5-year-old post.

How to handle toxic comments from moderators?

How to handle moderator toxicity?

I asked a question to a marketing expert in how to promote with little cash, header moderator whom was NOT the one asked, replied toxic comments, downright toxic nothing advisory.

It’s tough because I am doing self promotion around subreddits, and end up exposing myself time to time, while some moderators can stay completely anonymous- how to deal with it? Just block and ignore?

I realize some cannot even be blocked.

How to keep a nsfw subreddit from being falsely reported and taken down?

Does anyone know a way to stop my subreddits from being falsely reported and taken down for non consensual intimate media? Me and a few others used to moderate a subs with a couple hundred thousands members and we always took posts down when they were reported for non consensual intimate media unless we asked the person who was in the picture/video if they reported it and told us it wasn't them reporting it. We keep having to make new subs and they keep getting reported and taken down for the same thing even when we put the sub into text only and don't allow images/videos. Were guessing the person reporting the subs is someone we banned who was stealing images of random Of creators and using them to blackmail people in the sub. We have tried to reach out to reddit via email, twitter, and appeals but haven't heard anything since we sent it early this year. If anyone knows anything that could help me in this situation I'd greatly appreciate it. I'm wondering how any nsfw subreddit can stay up when nobody at reddit verifies the person reporting is the person in the image/video. We also had tons of people who used our sub who got banned for non consensual intimate media when they were only posting themselves.

How do comments work?

I see comments about Top Comment and posting under it. What is it, is it usually the first comment we see, and does one have to post subsequent comments under it? I thought I would figure it out over time, but I haven’t. Thanks. Also, I don’t get posting upvotes for the original question. Does this mean we like the question?

I just made a sub for the first time, does 8 online mean 8 ppl are viewing, or does that mean I have it open in 8 different tabs?

It's called r/ fuckingstupidppl. Why couldn't I ask the question in r/ askreddit?

When do you allow self-promotion in subreddits?

I am an app developer and reddit is probably the best platform to get early users with little to no cash spent.

But reddit is notorious for users disliking promotions, and even hating the ones who promote unless it’s completely free.

On what conditions, do moderators allow self-promotions? I did see some subreddit moderators “blessing” a self-promo saying the author was generous “in sponsorship and AMA”.

Do answering posts/questions in subreddit count as “AMA”? What would be the ratio? 20 answers/comments to 1 self-promo post?

What kind of sponsorships do subreddits accept? Cash? In kind?

Would some moderators allow me to do self-promo if I give out 20-30 lifetime subscription for free for the promo post?

What about giving 1 year free to any one who DM me in a week’s time after I put up the post? Would moderators allow that if I email them in advance?

I am still figuring things out in Reddit, where many users are highly opinionated and active, so ideal for early testing.

What to do when the owner/creator of a sub has been inactive for a year?

I'm the co-founder of r/jungle, and the the owner of the sub has been AWOL for quite a while now. Is there a way to take back control of the sub?

I've tried multiple ways of reaching out, but his profile has been inactive, reddit wide.

Weird post, but I’m wondering if any Reddit chat channels need moderators?.

I am a 16-year-old with a passion of helping others and keeping community safe. I have a record of moderating channels in the past along with other people. If there’s anyone that is interested in adding me you can expect. Great communication, will be communicating with other moderators/members to make sure I’m doing the job properly. As a 16-year-old I do have school, however every other Friday or so I have off. You can also expect me to ask about any rules for the moderation team to make sure that I am doing everything properly and not breaking rules as a moderator. The goal of being a moderator is to become a leader, help out, and just bring a positive atmosphere to your channel

How Do You Re-Instate A Subreddit?

So, this morning I was checking reddit, only to realize that one of the Subs that I created, GardenofYuri, was removed, apparently for being unmoderated. Which is utterly stupid, as I am the only moderator and so far as the three years its been up, the only one who posts to it!

It is an archive for cute Yuri I've found over the years.

I also didn't stop being a mod for it, but that's what it told me. I would also link to it, but apparently this Sub won't let me link my own stuff, which is weird.

So, unless a bot or something posted something that was against Reddit's TOS in the two or so weeks I haven't posted to it, because I was busy with other things, I don't understand why it states that GradenofYuri was unmoderated.

Is there any way for me to get it reinstated?

Is wishing death upon someone “threatening violence”?

I was under the impression that wishing death on another user of this site was against the terms of service against violent threats, until someone told me they wished a public figure was allowed to kill me. When I reported that for threatening violence, I was banned from that subreddit for “Reddit report abuse”.

Was I in the wrong for reporting that comment?

Why Can’t I Join?

Hopefully this is ok to ask here. I am not very social media savvy and I am hoping that it is a simple thing I can do or undo
I have a serious question for the wise people of an ornithology group but after waiting more than a month I still have received no reply and still cannot join and this cannot ask my question.

Is there a trick to being allowed to join? What am I doing wrong? What can I change?

How to handle false automated warning for "threatening violence"?

I've been posting around a quote from Trumps rallies to bring attention to extremism in his rhetoric, after he riles up the crowd with fear mongering on "enemies within" and immigrants, one of his supporters in the crowd yells "kill them!". I also posted a quote where he says his followers would beat up people who oppose him even if they were their own kids.

The system thinks I'm threatening violence when I'm quoting his own rallies in an attempt to bring attention to the extremism he's using and fomenting.

What do I do? I've sent an appeal message but they limit it to 250 words which wasn't enough for me to get my point across. I dont think censoring this is really an answer because people need to be aware of what he's saying and how his followers are responding. Is there another way to contact the admins?

Thanks

What to do when mods are possibly sabotaging a sub?

It's been a bit of a shitshow over in a certain aquatic subreddit lately.

What kind of tools does a community have to police itself?

Mods have been posting inflammatory, tangential topics not in line with the subs guidelines.

Numerous users have supposedly been banned for "attacking" said mods in DM's though all that is visible to us are the public comments challenging said moderators inappropriate actions. (While I wouldn't condone verbal attacks on the mods - the posts mods are either unhinged, or clear ragebait/trolling - and that's not in line with maintaining a stable community).

Their disruptive actions are starting to attract other trolls.

I understand that Reddit is more like a collection of tiny fiefdoms, than any functioning democracy - but it raises the question first posed by Juvenal. "Who watches the watchers?"

The sub is currently over 75k members, not large by any means, but the community deserves some sort of tools to protect itself.

Any suggestions out there?

Is it rude to DM Modmail to offer assistance?

There’s a community for a specific website that I’m very active in. I frequently answer users questions to the best of my ability and report offending posts when I see them.

This site is still in beta, so whenever it has maintenance, the subreddit gets flooded with spam about said maintenance. It seems like currently there’s only one or two mods handling the spam, so if they’re offline, it can really build up.

I’ve moderated forums as part of my job for a similar website before, so I’d love to offer help both in general and to help clear out spam whenever the website is having issues. Is this seen as bad form?

I’d hate to accidentally break some social norm by DMing modmail when this is a subreddit I’m super active in.

How can we get our sub back?

I am in a sub for a TV show; its second season just started about a month ago. Last season, mods posted the discussion post for each episode. Also, we could post or comment. Now someone changed the access so only approved users can post, and you can submit a request to be able to post. I have submitted a request and no one has responded. Also NO ONE has posted ANYTHING so I'm assuming others are having the same issues as me. It says we have 6 mods, but there has been no activity from any of them. I've never experienced this before so what are the next steps to take so we can go back to having an active sub?

Why is a member of a sub not receiving notifications of replies?

Can anyone tell me why a user would not be getting notifications when her posts/comments are replied to in a certain sub? She says the only notifications she gets are those from the bot in the sub that awards points and changes the post flair for correct answers (it's in a geographical guessing sub). I'm a mod for this sub but fairly new to it so maybe not 100% familiar with all the tools at my disposal. Any help/advice appreciated.

HELP! 🙏🏻 Our Restricted Gossip & Snark Sub UNFAIRLY (‼️) Got Banned for Harassment Without Notice and No Members Are Being Harassed At All 🥺

Dear Fellow Mods,

I would like to seek your help and advise on my sub.

Our sub is a gossip and snark sub about public social media influencers, like many other subreddits here. We enforce strict rules against harassment of fellow members, among many other rules.

We also do not allow posting of private infos, etc.

We used to be a Public sub, then became a Private sub (because one of the "influencers" who is subject of the sub kept harassing our sub members by creating multiple accounts who then got banned by Reddit for ban evasion), then finally became a Restricted sub (so seen publicly, but only approved members can post or comment).

A few days ago after we became a Restricted sub, us Mods suddenly got the notice that our sub got banned for harassment.

This came as a surprise to all of us, including many of our sub members, because they are aware of our strict rule against Harassment. We were a Private sub and nothing like this has happened.

We highly suspect it is the very same deranged and jobless "influencer" who made multiple accounts and got banned for ban evasion, who can now publicly see the gossip and snarks posted against her who is doing all these b.s. report claims because she also tried to have one PUBLIC VIDEO POST of her taken down due to "Copyright Infringement" when there are plenty other posts with the same video content, but not about her, but her family members, and never got reported for such b.s. claim.

I filed appeals already, but nothing has happened. What else can we do about this?

Our members kept DM-ing me and looking forward to the return of the sub.

We don't want to be forced to just use other platforms like TikTok for a gossip and snark page, due to the unfair way our sub was banned without due process, without notice, or without any proof, just because an influencer who can't handle criticisms make such b.s. report claims.

Hoping the Mod Support Team can please look into our case 🙏🏻 Or DM me for further info.

Is there a bot that can create and update college football game threads?

I haven't been able to find much about how to do this, but it would be nice to have something like this for my sub.

Want to be able to see box score and updates during the game in the text body of the game thread.

Is there anything that can be done about a Mod who doesn’t moderate the sub?

I am subbed to a specific subreddit that has one moderator who doesn’t moderate. I know a few other people (in person) who also subbed there due to the subject material we are all fans of.

Going back through posts it is clear that MANY of the redditors there have “accepted” and “given up” that the mod will ever actually moderate posts or enforce the subreddit rules.

The moderator is very active on a different related sub and about once every 30-90 days will post a general discussion post around a specific current event.

But this moderator does not moderate. Spoiler posts are constantly posted and not taken down (without spoiler tags). This is one of the biggest issues I see being brought up.

Attempts to request new moderators or new ownership of the sub have been unsuccessful. This is not a new issue. Is there anything that can be done?

If someone doesn't want their image or story crossposted, why have that option?

I crosspost info/stories/articles/images about nature. I've gotten a couple of warnings from reddit saying someone complained about crossposting particular images. How are we supposed to know if something is restricted or not? If a personal image doesn't have a statement such as "do not share this image", how do we know otherwise? Seems like a very hit/miss way to manage this issue. Thoughts?

When is the proper time to report a chat to not break rule 8 of Reddit?

So recently got a message from Reddit saying that I was giving a warning for violating rule 8 which is the misuse of the reporting feature and I'm a little confused because the only thing that I can think of is that I have had multiple times where I've gotten a chat request from a random person and they will usually start with simple like I will have posted something and they will talk about that and then usually real quick. They also will start sending random photos and then they will basically say I don't want to keep secrets from you. I want to let you know that I actually am an only fans girl and I want to move this conversation over to only fans just to know that you're serious and that was when I would always report them for Spam solicitation. Basically I feel like that. That is exactly what they would want someone to report that for, but the only thing I can think of is that they think that I'm just doing it maliciously because of you know oh she said something I didn't like or something like that. Am I misreading it? Cuz that's the only thing I can think of cuz any other time I've reported like a post it's clearly in violation of that. Subreddit 's Rules so I guess I'm confused
