Hi everyone, I’m Tarou, and I’ve been a vegetarian for four years! I’m planning to go to Japan between 2025 and 2026 to attend a language school and learn Japanese while exploring the country’s vegetarian culture. But I’ve recently realized one thing—it’s not so easy to find vegetarian communities and popular spots in Japan! This makes me curious:Here’s the question:1. Which cities in Japan have the largest vegetarian communities? Any must-visit restaurants or activities for vegetarians?2. Are there any hidden spots that foreign vegetarians love, or even “secret bases”?3. If you’re a vegetarian, what would you most want to discuss with someone visiting from abroad?----------------------------------------------------------My goal is simple: I’m not only looking for vegetarian gathering places but also hoping to gain a deeper understanding of the local vegetarian culture and make friends with like-minded people. If you have recommendations or useful experiences, please share! And if you know of some places that are super cool or mysterious and should be reserved for “insiders,” please let me know! ----------------------------------------------------------Extra topics to spark discussions:• Vegetarian communities: Are there any interesting events or special restaurants that can’t be missed?• Cultural differences: How is vegetarian culture in Japan different from other countries?**----------------------------------------------------------**I believe everyone has unique stories and advice to share, and I can’t wait to hear yours! If you think this post is worth sharing, feel free to tag more friends to join the discussion!
I love cooking vegan Taiwanese and Indian-style dishes, and I often experiment with new recipes. If there’s a chance, I’d love to share my cooking with you all! Maybe we can even exchange recipes or tips—it’d be great to learn from each other and get creative together.Thank you in advance, and if we meet in the future, I’ll treat you to a vegetarian meal!
Update: I decided to move into a smaller share house hoping for more open minded people haha. There are still 3 more rooms available if any other vegans want to join! Kichijoji station.
The title says it all actually :D does anyone live in a share house / apartment where there’s a room available soon? I’m tired of only living with omnis and eating by myself 🥲 I want to have vegan dinner parties toooo - let’s find each other!

Tokyo is huge and I'm overwhelmed by figuring out where to stay. We like to stay in neighbourhoods that have vegan options so if something is up we can always go somewhere (semi) closeby.
We prefer asian (vegetable-based) dishes over fast food (burgers etc), and likely want to stay in a bit more chill area. Looking at HappyCow and from reading online Asakusa might be a good pick (also for our budget). What is your experience?
Hello, I have been vegan for almost 7 years and I am living in Fukuoka. Any vegan from Fukuoka or Kyushu? I would love to have friends with the same mindset.
Hi, I've been craving good vegan karage or katsu so please drop your recs.
Also would be nice if you can share your recommendations for places that have vegan protein like soy meat etc.
Thanks!
I'm traveling in two days and suddenly realized I haven't done research on THIS topic!
I have been to Japan in 2017, I wasn't vegan at the time, so I would like to get some first hand experience if you wouldn't mind *Pictures appreciated*
Hi everyone, can you help me figure out what vegan foods are not as common in Japan that I could bring from Italy?
I was thinking really nice olives or artichokes? Given that I've always heard Japanese culture prefers lighter tastes, that are not as pungent.
Thanks in advance :)
Hello :)
I am trying to find vegan Japanese cooking programmes. I am looking online but haven't been able to see anything so far. I have found a few classes that are an hour or two or maybe even a weekend workshop. But I am looking for a proper programme that does training over several weeks. Does anyone know if something like this exists? Thank you in advance!
I'm in Tokyo at the moment, and I want to go to izakaya. The thing I'm worried about is being served non-vegan snacks without being asked.
From my understanding they will give you food that you can't really turn down in exchange for an entry fee.
How should I approach this? Just try to find what any izakaya serves before entering? It seems like it might be difficult to figure that out, are there any resources for this?
Thanks for any help!
Hey all, I'm going to be in Tokyo in 3 weeks and I was wondering how far in advance I should book vegan restaurants? I've been told I should book a couple of weeks in advance, but I wanted to hear other people's suggestions. I'm also struggling to find restaurants that accept online bookings, so if anyone has recommendations on how to go about doing this, let me know! Thank you if you can help.
Hi, I will be returning to my home country in a couple of days and I was wondering what would be good snacks to bring home for my family, friends, and colleagues. Preferably things that don't expire quickly.
I found some plantbased ramen in the Donki and Okinawan candy. Any other tips are very welcome! Thanks~
Hi all! I am Japanese and living in Tokyo. This might sound a little odd for a Japanese person to post this question here, but your advice would be much appreciated!
I have opportunities to welcome non-Japanese visitors who are vegan or vegetarian. Sometimes, a group includes both meat-eaters and vegan/vegetarian individuals. As a Japanese person who has absolutely no dietary restrictions herself, it is always quite a hassle to find good restaurants that offer both vegan/vegetarian options and regular dishes with fish or meat, in order to satisfy everyone in the group. It would be great if I could specifically search for restaurants with English menus where vegan/vegetarian-friendly dishes are clearly specified
.These occasions mostly occur in Tokyo, but I also sometimes travel with them outside of Tokyo, so if you know a good way to search for such restaurants in other cities, it would also be appreciated! Thanks!
What is the most hard thing as a vegan in Tokyo for you? Finding a vegan friendly restaurants, or finding a recipe to cook home? I'm trying to figure out how I can contribute to the society.
Hi everyone,
I've been living in Japan for a few months, as a vegetarian who usually cooks plant-based at home. I have no problem finding supplies for basic recipies like curry, pasta, tofu and the like. I love making tofu-based "katsudon" (in this case I do use eggs as well).
But I was wondering if there was stuff resembling Beyond Meat. In my home country, there are plant-based substitutes popping up for bacon, sausage, burger patties, etc. I enjoy those for an occasional easy, vegan/plant-based "junk food" feeling.
I found soy-based pre-cooked "meat" in my local supermarket, and it's great for ramen and pasta, but it gets kind of old after a while. It's exactly the type of thing I'm looking for, I'm just hoping for more varied options.
Does anyone know if it exists in Japan? I live in Kanto, near Kamakura. Hopefully I can find stuff in Tokyo, or order it online.
Thanks!
Hey all, I've been recommended that I get my nails done on my trip to Japan but I've only found Vegan Radon Spa in Yokohama, which is out of the way. Does anyone know any fully vegan or vegan options nail salons more centrally located in Tokyo, Kyoto, or Osaka?
I've recently started working in Japan and have been betrayed a few times already buying very innocent-seeming snacks that end up having meat seasonings in them. I bought plain salted rice crackers at FamilyMart last week that turned out to have pork flavouring. Now I found out the crackers I've been eating ALSO have chicken flavouring. People warned me about how pervasive random animal products are in Japan, but this is way more than I expected, and as such I'm at a bit of a loss... so, I'm wondering if anyone has cracker/chip/snack recommendations that are vegan here in Japan. I'm in a slightly more rural area so I don't have access to any specialty stuff, but if there's any staples you guys rely on at konbinis/Maruto that would be super helpful.
TIA!!
I'm an absolute beginner but I'd love to get into roller skating. Unfortunately most skates appear not to be vegan. Anyone into skating here that could guide me on where/how to get good roller skates that are also vegan here in Japan? I'm in Tokyo. Thank you so much :3
Hi all, I just moved to Tokyo and very confused and overwhelmed by the beauty products around me. Any veteran vegan who can suggest vegan skincare and makeup brands? Apart from the international vegan brands.
Hi everyone,
I am traveling to Japan and will be in Tokyo for New Year’s Eve.
Does anyone know of any vegan parties going on?
Also, I have heard that many restaurants will be closed during this time. Does anyone have any idea which vegan restaurants in Tokyo will be open from January 1-3?
Thank you!
