I am currently applying to return to UTK in the fall as a transfer/readmission student (i went two years ago, changed majors and schools and went to community college and now i’m transferring/readmitting to UTK to finish for a bachelors) and right now my family is looking to move about an hour away from the university and we might have me put in an apartment but dorm housing would be better financially, is it too late for me to apply?

I heard from my boyfriend that goes here and lives in Utkhousing that because i was a student here formerly who did live on campus, leaving the school/dropping from the housing contact has now negated me from being able to reapply for it but i haven’t found any information stating that? I also know the waitlist is already long, but wondered if it works differently for transfer students because of our application deadlines being later? Just wanting to get some clarity on these questions if i can, thank you!

i'm in my last year of grad school and i just submitted my application for a phd program at utk and i'm super anxious. does anyone have any tips on what i should do now that i've submitted? should i talk to some admissions counselors or faculty members? i have a pretty decent grade/gpa history but they may not be the most competitive? i guess just some advice to fine some peace of mind while i wait until i hear back would be awesome.

I was running late to class, so I hopped on one of the Bird scooters around the fort. I tried to go around a car with its hazards on in the road, and I'm still not used to the hell scooters yet, so I stumbled into a puddle. The guy's door was open, and I splashed him. I heard him yell out but I panicked and didn't stop to apologize because I was worried he was gonna beat my ass. I don't know if stopping would have been better or worse to be honest.

So if you got splashed in the fort this morning by a woman in a UT shirt I'm so fucking sorry random guy. If it helps my accelerator pedal got stuck and I hit a curb and ate shit later, so I got what I deserved.

I am looking for advice for balancing my course load next semester. My goal throughout school has always been to spread my workload out as much as possible, but I am sort of unsure as to how to do that next semester.

Here are the classes I am definitely taking if I can get in them:

ECE 313 (Probs and Random Vars) with Taousser

COSC 365 (Languages and Systems) with Marz

My question is if I should take ECE 462 (Cyber Physical Security) with Icove or just take a general elective. I am also wondering if I should take COSC 395(Junior Seminar) this spring or delay it till senior year.

COSC 366 is sort of shaky since the class is almost full already, so that might need to be replaced with a CS elective or a general elective.

I have classes in Mossman and Strong Hall next semester, and it looks like Hodges will no longer be the most convenient option as a study spot with my Spring schedule.

Besides the first floor with the Einstein's in Mossman, and besides the 1st and 2nd floors in Strong, what are the best areas in these two buildings to sit down and study? An area with a table or desk of some sort would be ideal, as I know there are plenty of seating areas in both buildings, however the ones that come to mind are without desks.

In the last week alone, three different students at three different Tennessee universities have taken their own life on / near campus. UTK, MTSU, Vanderbilt.

College is hard, especially living in a dorm. Everything feels so heavy... matters so much. Your living situation/classes/friends constantly change. You are away from your family for the first time. You meet lots of people while picking your career all at once and time moves far too quickly. College isn't just "4 years of fun and then you're done!"

I understand not feeling like you are for this life and what comes with it. More people understand than you think.

I guess my main point is this - we all think about you. I'm an alum that works with lots of other UT alums. These students were topics of conversation at work all week. We see your random faces posted on UT's social media and you make us smile when things are normal. We want every single one of you to enjoy a better UT than we did.

That being said - i'm just worried for the current student body. Watch out for each other.

I'm very confident when i say there are hundreds of people on this sub that live in Knoxville and could be a good resource for at least a conversation. Maybe some of us alumni aren't too old and could provide a little bit more consistency than your college experience can.

I've been out of college for two years and still feel like "oh crap, what am i doing with my life?" It breaks my heart that three different students just ended their stories just as they were handed the pen.

It happened when i was in school. Same spot on campus. We need to get past the taboo and stop pretending that college kids don't kill themselves.

Hi! i’m probably transferring to utk for the second semester of my freshman year. I go to a smaller school out of state currently and I decided I just wanted to go somewhere closer to home. I am wondering if it’s easy to make friends if I don’t join a sorority? I can’t join a sorority because the school doesn’t have my chapter and i’ve been initiated so I can’t rush again and i’m really worried I will get to utk and be just as alone as I feel now.

hi! so my laptop keyboard has been recently driving me up a wall with some of the keys repeatedly going in and out on me (specifically the r, f, b, g, t keys) and it's been making trying to do my work an absolute nightmare when i can barely type half the time without having to repeatedly press down on them to have even a chance of getting any of the broken ones to work. does anyone more knowledgeable than me possibly know what's up with it or where i can take it to get it fixed? i've heard OIT doesn't do repairs so i'm not sure if this is something they could help with but i'm not sure where else to go if not.

I'm writing to y'all today because I need some help. I'm going to be going into my last two semesters next year, and I'll finally be done. While this should be a time to celebrate and be happy. I'm in a bit of a pickle. During the fun financial aid process that we all got to experience in the summer. I was told all my stuff was good and set to go. Then a couple weeks later when I was confirming paperwork, I noticed the amount of aide was wrong. I was then told that I reached the end of my pell grants, and I did not get any scholarships.... Even though it was applied to my account then taken off. I have since been applying to outside scholarships and asking everyone professor I have if they know of any that I could apply for. But everything gets applied in the fall semester.

The other issue at play is that my GPA is not where the majority of UT scholarships want it to be. It's not terrible, however, the majority of my time here I was going to school full time and working full time to help support my family. I'm not trying to push blame on anyone or anything but me. I have been doing much better over the summer and this semester. But my GPA is still probably not going to be where UT wants it.

I really want to continue going to school and getting my education. I'm so damn close, I'm feeling like I'm crawling as is. But I want to finish, and go to graduate school. My family situation is a lot better now, so I can finally focus and do my best. But now I just feel like the doors are shutting. I dont have anyone who can help me financially with this either.

So I'm coming to ask my fellow Vols. I have met with some of you who are in the same situation as me, and it breaks my heart. So many of you are gems, and I hate that if you get help or not depends on your GPA (not all the time, but a big chunk). Hopefully if you read this and see some suggestions that sound good, they work for you and you get to continue your education

So I'm in a weird situation. I got my AS in business admin at Pellissippi and worked in an office for a year. Well after working I wanted to go back and get my bachelor's. I chose finance as my major because when I was younger I enjoyed trading stocks and crypto. I only have 5 classes left after this semester but I think I have failed the same FINC class twice and I'm wondering if I should switch my major. My main question is: what should I switch my major to in Haslam? I have completed all the of the BUAD classes and only have 4 FINC classes and 1 econ class before I can graduate. I heard HR and marketing was a breeze compared to finance. What are your opinions?

Hello Class of 2029!

I hope you are having an excellent Halloween 🎃

I felt obligated to make this post to give my opinions and knowledgebase as to the fall 2024 admission cycle.

If you want the TL;DR version:

• If you are instate you will have next to no problem getting in with a bunch of scholarship (so long as you have above a 3.5 unweighted GPA in high-school and a half-rate SAT/ACT score).
• Out of State... you damn near need to be the best of the best these days. I cannot promise anything obviously but if you have a weighted GPA above 4.3ish and a SAT/ACT in the 90th percentile or so... you should get a pretty good amount of money and feel comfortable with admissions (so long as you have half rate essays)

Firstly I feel obligated to state my qualifications to give the opinions and facts in this post:

1. I am a current sophomore at UT (still a first year student though)

Applied out of state

2. I am affiliated with two organizations who monitor admission cycles each year across all universities (one MAY or may not be directly affiliated with MIT's admission office).

Not to name names... lol.

But I think this discussion should be broken up into 6 parts. (Yes long post OH NOOOOO!!!) But if you really want the honest truth and plan on... ya know... going to college... then reading should be in your best interest my friend.

Part One: The In-state vs. Out-of-State War

It is well known that many universities favor instate students in order to keep future generations... well... "in state." At many uni's this can be seen through more scholarship opportunities, cheaper base tuition, and in many cases: EASIER ADMISSIONS.

It is no secret that UT MUCH prefers instate students... especially seen in the 67% acceptance rate of instate students in the 2023 cycle vs the Out of state 23% acceptance rate (yes... ouch).

My current roommate is an instate student with a truck ton of scholarship (only has to pay for housing atp). Where as I am actively dropping a cool 17 grand a semester! YIPPEEE!

But outside of the money and the distribution between 67% and 23% what does that actually look like in terms of admission criteria? We will look at that next.

Part Two: Instate Admission Criteria

Straight from the guaranteed admission website...

Score a 24+ ACT composite (SAT 1160+) with both a 19+ Math ACT subscore (510+ SAT Math) AND 19+ English ACT subscore (500+ SAT (ER + W))

AND

Achieve one of the following: Earn a 4.0+ UT Core GPA Be among the Top 10% of their high school graduating class

Honestly not terrible, most people I know who came here instate got guaranteed admission!

So to my instate students... good luck!

Part Three: One of these things is not like the other... (Out Admission Criteria)

This section is going to be rather long and probably the most sought after... so grab your reading glasses!

There are many misconceptions about college admissions that I feel you ought to know. The idea of a holistic review is very, very loose. Holistic reviews of your class schedule and your GPA/ACT score.

At most, your essays and activities in high-school will boost your case for admission by about 5 ACT score (but this would be for like the president of the student body with an entire page of Sh... Stuff they have done in high-school).

Good essays help admissions counselors like you as a person and it helps them want to want you!

Good resumes help this as well.

However... how long do you think it takes to read a single application? 30 seconds? A minute? Two minutes? The average amount of time it would take someone to read all of the information you provide would take around 6 minutes without skimming. Considering that means a single counselor could only go through 10 per hour...

We can assume (and I know for a fact) they do not read everything.

They look for 5 things while going through your app (no particular order):

1. GPA Weighted and Unweighted
2. SAT and ACT
3. AP classes (at a glance)
4. Some prose in your essays
5. Just a bunch of stuff on your activities in high-school

Quantity over quality often helps ngl...

Now that we understand the idea that they ain't gonna be looking at EVERYTHING with minute detail, what do they actually numerically look for?

Generally, for the sake of time and fair arguments, here are some basic numbers:

These are middle of the road so if you are above them then you should be fine...

SAT Score at or above 1340

ACT at or above 30

GPA 4.3 UT Weighted

If you don't match or beat those requirements... you better write the cure to cancer on your essays!

that was a joke

But it kind of wasn't... those scores and values are pretty standard nowadays, and you kind of have to be a pretty good student to earn your spot here.

SIDE NOTE: I had many friends apply here out of state and I was the only one who was not waitlisted. And they had some insane resumes (president of stuco with 4.3 GPA for example).

Part Four: Each college is different.

I don't mean reach university, because like... yeah no crap. I mean reach academic college is different.

If you are applying to be an engineer, you should expect to NEED a pretty decent math SAT Score. If you push below a 590 on the math... you aren't getting in to the tickle college of engineering.

Nursing is different and hard to get into.

Business is business... but it is still difficult to get into cause... ya know... it's highly ranked.

So on and so forth.

Do keep in mind that each college can only allow so much of one category. So engineering has a different acceptance rate than business (often not talked about).

There are no hard facts online about what it is... but I am pretty sure the Out of state engineering acceptance rate was about 16% of so... (don't take my word for it).

Part Five: You've already applied... what should you do?

Don't fail out your senior year. UT is very unforgiving (understandably) is you fall off the face of the earth senior year.

My senior year was actually my best academic year! Plus I...

1. Was the captain of the volleyball team
2. Was the yearbook president
3. Senior class president
4. Student Ambassador
5. Robotics Captain
6. Math Team Captain
7. BLAH BLAH BLAH

All that to say... DONT BOG DOWN you are not done with high-school. UT will chew you and spit you out like it is nothing if your GPA tanks.

Also, just wait and follow UT's instructions. (Crazy right?)

Today was tragic. I'm in utter disbelief, and it is unfathomable how tragic this is... I am new here, but I've heard this has unfortunately happened once before. What did UT do last time? What can I expect?

I'm feeling distressed about the rumor of the death on campus today. I don't understand why UTK hasn't formally said anything. I can't find any news articles with any real information. I called the Emergency Information line, and they were flippant and unhelpful. They told me to call the Dean's office which didn't seem correct either.

It's heartbreaking to think that someone could die on campus and that everything would be business as usual.

Edit: I never meant that I felt I deserved to immediately know the who/ what/ when/ where. I understand that contacting the family is first priority.

The feeling that I was trying to put into words was how it felt to be in a situation where I'm hearing about this death from people before class, I had no confirmation of whether or not it's true, and then I'm expected to just sit and pay attention in class after that. I think that could have been handled differently.

I don't even think that they needed to confirm any specifics to inform us that something had happened. It was just uncomfortable to experience how quickly and slowly information spreads, because plenty of people on campus knew something had happened before any sources confirmed it.

There's an early voting poll a 20-ish minute walk from campus at 400 Main Street that's open until 8:00pm today and 6:00pm tomorrow. I was in and out in literally less than 5 minutes.

If you're registered to vote in Knox county, and can spare the time, go vote. Tennessee has one of the lowest voter turnouts in the country, and I don't have to tell you that's a bad thing.
