A nonfiction book that you go back to every year/month/reference and learn something new.

Maybe the first time you read it, it was too advanced and you didn't know enough to understand the concepts.

Or it was entirely too dense with information so you missed a lot.

Or a misunderstanding where you thought you knew...but then the second time around, you realized you only "knew" the surface meaning. And then the third time, you realized that the second time was the actual surface.

Or just something you want to be put into words as a reminder to yourself. You forgot you knew so you had to come back to refresh.

-

Finance and peace/mindfulness/happiness preferred. But I feel like any book fitting these points would be worth a read.

Thank you

I’m stuck between books!

So I’m sure everyone knows what I’m talking about but you know the feeling when you finish a book that was so good that you’re stuck in some sort of book paralysis and can’t choose a new one!? That’s me… and I need suggestions on what to read! It’s hard to say my style because I read a bit of everything, but I’d say I’m mostly Mystery/Thriller/suspense. For example some of my recent fav’s are…

1: The stand 2: Swan Song 3: The institute 4: The terminal list 5: Fairy tale

I love Stephen king but mostly his newer stuff… Anyone have suggestions like these? I’m open to new Author or a new series.

Thanks all!

Lookin for a doorstopper

so for whatever reason i tend to like books in that 250-350 page sweet spot. maybe its my modern attention span, idk. but i feel like ive spent over a year at this point basically ONLY reading books in this length range. and now i'm feeling like 2025 will be the year i go for a big one. would love something meaty and rewarding.

any reccomendations on a doorstopper? i feel like ive been considering a very wide range of options, including:

Lonesome Dove

Gravity's Rainbow

Infinite Jest (started in high school 10+ years ago... enjoyed it but proved too intimidating overall)

Lord of the Rings (big fan of the films but have never bested the first 100 pages)

Rise and Fall of the Third Reich (non-fic, but... feels timely...)

One of the classics (maybe something russian)

anyways - humor goes a long way for me. and something that really toes that line between offering a different reality to sink into and shining a light on the world that i know and inhabit. Vonnegut is probably my favorite author fwiw.

Having problems reading

I used to read one book every month, but now I’m struggling to get back into that routine. It’s so hard to focus or even read more than 5 pages a day, any tips to help me ?

Looking for a few good reads

I’m a 25y/o man so the ever so popular romance novels are out of my wheelhouse.

Looking for some gritty historical/realistic fiction based around the California gold rush.

Also some post apocalyptic/social collapse survival stuff, maybe similar vibes to days gone minus the zombie bs. Or even far cry 5 if you play video games

Lastly, something about a corrupt dystopian society that the protagonist is trying to eliminate, maybe also similar to the far cry series of video games. I’ve already read a few of the popular ones, hunger games, f451, 1981 etc.

Something Epic

Give me some epic, generation-spanning, 500-1k page books/series.

Some stuff I've read that I liked:

  • Swan Song by Robert McCammon
  • The Border Trilogy by Don Winslow
  • The Passage Trilogy by Justin Cronin (currently reading)
  • The Warlord Chronicles by Bernard Cornwell
  • Lonesome Dove series by Larry McMurtry (still need to read Comanche Moon)
  • Dune by Frank Herbert (read first 3)
  • Sun Eater by Christopher Ruocchio (only read first 3 so far)

Yes, I have The Stand on my TBR.

I've read the first 4 Expanse books and they were too inconsistent in quality to keep me reading.

I read the first 2 Dark Tower books and I couldn't get into it.

Also, fantasy isn't my favorite but if it's in the vein of The Warlord Chronicles then fire away.

The Last Housewife

I just finished The Last Housewife by Ashley Winstead and looking for another book that touches on the anti-feminist chauvinistic type cult or theme his book has! I know a lot of people didn’t like this aspect but it really interested me!

A book that depicts the struggles throughout history

Human's quality of life has come a long way from where it was the majority of our existence. Life is much easier, comfortable, and safer than it used to be. To think hot showers are a daily necessity for many of us even though virtually none of our ancestors ever experienced one once. I'm interested in reframing my world views, and appreciating life today by acknowledging how hard it used to be. I'm looking for a book that really illustrates the horrors and struggles of people and societies throughout history (war, famine, disease, brutality, etc.). I'd prefer a book that illustrated a wide ranging time, as opposed to one specific era in history. But I'm open to options. Not sure if Dr. Harari's Sapiens is a good choice for this?

Vikings used to pillage and rape, natives used to scalp people, pioneers used to bear the oceans and deserts for months at a time, slavery existed across cultures, the flu was mostly fatal, etc. Any of these things seems hard to comprehend today, and yet they were present in nearly all humans' lives until the last couple hundred years or less. What is a good source to better understand human experience for the bulk of our existence?

Books/Series Like Sloppy Firsts/The Jessica Darling Series for Teen Boys

When I was a teenage girl I read the Jessica Darling series by Megan McCafferty over, and over, and over. I lent it to my angsty teen girl friends and it became their comfort book series, too. It was laugh-out-loud hilarious while also making me feel seen, understood, and not so alone in how much I absolutely hated being a teenage girl. It holds such a special place in my heart. I was wondering if there are similar books or series for teen boys that I can give to my son to read.

british & irish slice of life romance?

once a year I stumble upon a new British or Irish writer that I love, but “country of origin” isn’t a searchable category with my library’s system so I’m hoping for suggestions here!

I’ve really liked:
A Very Nice Girl - Imogen Crimp
Normal People - Sally Rooney
One Day - David Nicholls
Exciting Times - Naoise Dolan

thriller with good husband/not misogynistic relationships

I love thrillers, but I always run into the same problem: the husband is always a gaslighter or a jerk. i want a good thriller where the husband doesn’t invalidate her concerns, question her, act abusive, etc.

i just want good psychological thrillers with healthy marriages and a non misogynistic portrayal of male/female relationships 😭

thanks!

Please suggest books with a sibling/ward like bond between the characters.

Hello everyone.

Sorry if it has been asked before but are there any books where the main focus in on a platonic relationship between characters who have a bond similar to the one between Joel/Ellie from The Last of Us, or Victor/Sydney (from Vicious by V.E. Schwab). They could be siblings, or they could be unrelated. I just want the main focus to be on their relationship. Bonus if there is an aspect of mystery/suspense involved as well.

Thank you!

a poetry or any book that captures a similar vibe to Hozier's songs?

I’m looking for something with dark, lyrical beauty and emotional depth, along with literary themes.

Hozier often references works like Dante's Divine Comedy and myths such as Icarus. For example, his song 'Francesca' draws from The Divine Comedy telling the story of a character trapped in eternal damnation, and 'Unknown/Nth' evokes the treachery of the ninth circle of Hell.

Any recommendations in that vein?

Fantasy books with mega corporations?

Fantasy books with huge mega corporations kind of like the East India Company, something like “Babel” by RF Kuang but with a bigger focus on the commercial side

Website on top ten books to become an expert

I read a tweet sometime ago which suggested that if chosen properly, you can become an expert on any topic upon reading ten books on it.

Has anyone else come across any such site, if yes could you share it?

Fiction books that aren't bleak?

Every book I read lately seems to be somewhat depressing/bleak. I'd love suggestions for anything that isn't? It doesn't have to be all rainbows and sunshine, and I don't want anything dull, but surely there are interesting/exciting books without so much misery?

For context, the last few books I read are The Keeper by Graham Norton, Truly Madly Guilty by Liane Moriarty, and I'm currently reading The Survivors by Jane Harper (only a third of the way through so far). Previously I've read a lot of Lisa Jewell books, some by Paula Hawkins, and a few other miscellaneous books that I've picked up second hand (London Rules by Mick Herron, Blood Orange by Harriet Tyce, Found by Erin Kinsley). I actually really enjoyed the vast majority of these books (except Blood Orange), but for the most part, they're on the less upbeat side. As I'm writing this I'm realising I seem to gravitate to Crime/Mystery books, so it's not entirely surprising that they tend to be a bit depressing.

I don't even know the genre I'm after, just books where people are... living their lives. I know, very helpful! Definitely not Fantasy or Sci-Fi. Preferably set in the present-day or recent past.

Looking for Book Recommendations - Something Memorable and Maybe a Love Story?

Hi all!

I’m on the hunt for a great read that leaves a lasting impression. Normally, I’m a big fan of Jodi Picoult, but this time I’m looking for something a bit less dramatic. I’ve enjoyed historical novels in the past, especially those about English royalty (like The Other Boleyn Girl), but I’d love to branch out and try something different.

Ideally, I’m looking for something with a memorable story, maybe with a love angle, but nothing too heavy or dramatic but looking for an easy read for an upcoming vacation and just other suggestions . I’d love any recommendations you think I might enjoy!

Maybe something Christmas related? But not hallmark Christmas

Thanks in advance!

A book about witches/witchcraft for a fan of magical realism

My MIL has been reading a lot of fiction featuring witches and witchcraft lately. For Christmas she asked for a couple of books that could help her better understand the culture.

I bought Cunning Folk by Tabitha Stanmore, but I’d also like to add something that will give her a better understanding of the elements of witchcraft.

There are so many poorly written books for would-be-witches, but can someone recommend one that’s succinct and meant more for outsiders trying to understand?

I have never read a traditional novel(outside of school), suggest me some.

I read a lot, I have easily read hundreds of millions of words in novels the past couple of years (yes I am a bookworm) BUT they were all from online novels (most of them are not that well written) there were a few gems in there, but unfortunately, most of them were just to pass time, and so I want you to give me the essentials or ones that you love personally and think that they are worth my time (I started medicine this month so unfortunately I don’t have 10 hours a day to read). I have no requirements other than it not being an erotic/smut novel.

->I can handle a long book series (my favorite novel is 4 million words and I’ve read it twice)

My current checklist:
——LOTR trilogy.
——a few Brandon Sanderson’s books
——blood Meridian (I can handle it)
——three body problem
——dune
——A song of ice and fire

By u/JKT-477
——First two books of the Gormebghast series
——Narnia and the Space trilogy by CS Lewis
——Solomon Kane short stories
——Edgar rice Burroughs’ John Carter books
——Agatha Christie books: The murder of Roger Ackroyd, The moving finger, murder at the Vicarage and A Murder is announced (I’ve read M’o’t orient express seven years ago; might be worth a reread)
——Rex Stout’s Nero wolfe books: the doorbell rang, the three witnesses, if death ever

By u/nowordsofitsown
—— Patricia McKillip’s Riddle Master Trilogy

By u/Extra-Presence3196
——Selby’s Last Exit to Brooklyn

By u/Low-Wear-6259
—— Dracula , Frankenstein
—— the Sherlock Holmes books

Noir

Hi! Please suggest me a noir novel that has these traits:

  • cathartic
  • with attractive, shrewd, and charming characters (I don’t like characters who are too ill-fated and melodramatic)
  • standalone

I need books to get me through Christmas

I'll be spending Christmas at home with my cat, and I'm inspired by the Icelandic tradition of Jólabókaflóð. I plan to order a whole bunch of books from my local library to get me through the holiday season and I would love to find something uplifting that isn't easy to put down. I want to get lost in books and forget the stress of this season. Any suggestions?

I enjoy fantasy, science fiction, historical fiction, and comedy. But I'm really open to anything that is light and happy ♥️

Recommendations

Hello,

I have recently just started reading again after 10+ years of only reading scripture from time to to time. I'm 2 1/2 weeks in and have completed, the compound effect Dan Hardy, and started unafraid by Eddie penney. I only have one more book pre bought fearless another navy seal book.

I'm looking for books about being better, discipline, our minds (biggest personal struggle), war or warriors, even historical books (used to be my favorite subject), don't want to run out of books I want to keep the momentum going

Thanks in advance

Books similar to the Lunar Chronicles?

Hi everyone! I'm just getting back into reading after a few years decade or so of messing around life and gaming…

I really enjoyed the series Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer. Another personal favorite is the Chrestomanci series by Diana W. Jones.

Looking for books of same caliber.

Spice/smut is welcome as long it enhances the plot or character development… Any romance trope, EXCEPT miscommunication, second chance, and nonconsent.

I really want to start reading books more. I love to read but never had the time to complete a book. Other than a few of course. Please suggest some books that get me hooked fast so I actually complete them. Mystery, thriller, suspense or cheesy romance will do.

A book where the MC is characterized as horrible by society’s average standards

I don’t mean a novel which you absolutely abhorred, I’m trying to find a novel where the MC just doesn’t align themselves with our ‘normal’ standards and values of ‘good’.

An example is ‘Lolita’, books like that would be nice

When I mention horrible characters, I mean actual despicable people. I don’t want an anti hero who turns out to be the ‘good guy’ in a corrupt society. I want a character who digs their grave with every action taken. Thank you :)

(I posted something a few hours ago about other book recommendations and am very pleasantly surprised at how convenient it is to gather book recommendations. Thank you everyone who makes up this community!)

Firefighter 🔥🌶️

I bought my house earlier this year and it’s just a few houses down the street from the fire station. I have seen some very attractive firefighters there. I’m a middle aged female, late 20’s. Suggest me a book with steamy firefighter action. I fantasize where the female draws the attention from the firefighters when walking by the station, has an affair with a firefighter, something like that.
