S-Town is a podcast from Serial and This American Life, hosted by Brian Reed, about a man named John who despises his Alabama town and decides to do something about it. He asks Brian to investigate the son of a wealthy family who’s allegedly been bragging that he got away with murder. But then someone else ends up dead, and the search for the truth leads to a nasty feud, a hunt for hidden treasure, and an unearthing of the mysteries of one man’s life.

I’m on my 4th time listening to the podcast. I have never had anyone to share my thoughts, ideas and feelings with. I connect with John on an intellectual level and desperately crave more. I have scoured the Internet looking and can’t find it. Does anyone have a copy of the manifesto or suicide note from John ? Perhaps I should try and reach out to Brian Reed to get them?
I just listened to the podcast for the first time and for awhile I was losing interest. Starting out with a murder mystery but then turning into a podcast about John’s family and Tyler fighting over his property was getting boring to me. Then the other day after being committed to finishing it since I was four and half episodes in I binged my way through it at work and I’m glad I did. Hearing about how John and Olin relationship was sad. These two clearly loved each other despite it not going to work out, the whole brokeback saga and the long phone calls just sounded so sweet.
Of his headstones- I'm honestly shocked there isn't a single clock on anything!
I’m in the middle of my own diagnosis after learning a lot more about what autism actually is, I see a lot of similarities in myself and John. His incredible intellect and possibly savant abilities in a shit town allowed him to go unnoticed until the social aspect of it caught up to him in his 20s or 30s. Strong sense of moral justice. Perseverated on terrible thoughts and how awful the world is. Hyper focused on things like the maze and even Brian or local politics. He was also non-straight, which I recently learned accounts for 70% of autistic people. Autistic people are also nearly twice as likely to take their own life. Autistic people also tend to live in their own little world. I’m going to give it yet another listen now to see if I can find anything that would help rule it out. Obviously you can’t just diagnose someone like this, but it seems as likely as mercury poisoning to me. And there’s no reason it couldn’t be both.
I have a family event in Woodstock today. Does anyone want any pictures of anything in particular? Any questions that may or may not be in the podcast answered?
Does anyone know anything about him? Does he still do tattoos? Is he in jail? Am I stupid for wanting to get a tattoo from him?
How about this? Struck me on my last listen through this week.
John dissolved gold to enable him to plate things, perhaps he dissolved all his gold and kept it in solution, perhaps in some glass bottles. John would have known how to remove the gold from the solutions when he needed it.
Just a thought, hidden in plain site!
Today would have been John’s birthday. Only remember this because it’s mine as well. I usually listen to the podcast again around this time every year.
I've recently been dipping into the podcast again at random. I pretty much do this once a year just to enjoy the 'feel' again. The production, John's voice and words especially, the warmth, the music. It all holds together so well and feels like a sun dappled Autumn forest to me. Just wondered who else still does this?
I just got done listening to s-town podcast a few weeks ago. Currently I am invested in GameStop and have been following all the news about the hedge fund managers trying to cover there asses and fuck the poor over. I just now realized that this is exactly like John predicted when he said there’s going to be a huge class warfare in the future. Wild how some people are so inititutive. Also I saw on tiktok this retired spy gets asked questions from his family member (granddaughter maybe) and he also said the same thing and it’s all coming true. Keep your heads up folks because this could be big
Sorry if this was already revealed in old threads from years ago but didn't John hide the gold in his clocks? Wasn't it the reason for the Mercury poisoning as he smelt it onto various clocks for his friends and people that would appreciate the value of time? Doesn't it also explain why the clocks went missing as people figured it out and are slowly selling them off or melting them down?
Did anyone come forward with one of the clocks he worked on and show the gold gears/contents?
Sorry again, just couldn't find that confirmation to close the story loose end off for me...
I am currently teaching my 12th grade senior english class with S-Town, and one of the parents does not want her child to participate in this part of the curriculum (this kid is 18......sigh).
Anyway, I'm trying to find an alternate podcast that he can listen to that might be similar in form or themes that has less....I dunno....f words? Suicide? I really don't know what her problem with it is.
John Mcklamore is one of my favorite characters in any story on any medium. I was trying to brainstorm, can y'all think of any others like him, fictional or real?
I'd be curious to hear your favorite characters too :)
About a 5 weeks ago I was driving in the mountains listening to this podcast. After the 2nd or 3rd episode I grabbed my best friend and we binged this series while driving in the woods.
This podcast has changed my life. At some points I was sobbing and having to pull over. I still have so many feelings. I think about John everyday. I don't know what to do. It had such a huge impact on my soul and it still haunts me.
I didn't know where else to post this. I need it out of my brain. 11/10 podcast and I would recommend, just be prepared for it to forever have a place in your brain.
I've had the pleasure of listening to the podcast for the first time and binged it in two days. I couldn't be happier this was recommended to me so I could share in this unique story.
Now, I've been thinking about a possible theory about where the gold could be hidden. Like many, I'm not convinced if there even was some form of treasure to be found. However, an idea popped into my mind, a hypothetical that is fun to entertain. I'm not sure if it has been posted before in the thread, a quick search didn't show anything. Apologies if it's already a staple idea to most and this is the umpteenth repetition.
What if the gold was indeed buried in the center of the dungeons beneath the house? A series of tunnels that lead under the house with a maze-like quality. A word most often related to the hedge maze John envisioned. That's the kicker, what if the tunnels under the house follow the exact same pattern as the hedge maze outside? The center only to be found easily by those who are familiar with the lay-out of the maze.
As such, Tyler helping on the hedge maze and installing the gates in the dungeon were all planned by John in advance. Subconsciously teaching Tyler the solution to one of his biggest and most enjoyable projects; a posthumous treasure hunt. Feeding him the pieces of the puzzle without him noticing it until it was time to put that knowledge to use.
Hi guys so I frequently check the Tuscaloosa County jail app (some of my friends are degenerates) and I noticed that Kabrahm Burt currently has a warrant HA! I know that’s so random but I’m big fan of this podcast since I’m not far from Woodstock and thought I’d share! Also I don’t know if this kind of info is allowed but if it is not feel free to remove!
I'm going to be traveling through Alabama soon. It would only be about a 90 minute detour to visit but I'm wondering if it is worth it. Will I actually be able to see anything?
