Zzzzzz…

I love it when they fall asleep like this. Used to freak me out, but they like their beauty treatments.

ID snail plz

So my last snail died a couple weeks ago from old age and I was sad. Left with an empty terrarium. Then today at work, a customer I was checking out was buying eucalyptus and as I was scanning it I saw something inside of it! It was a snail! What are the chances that it wound up in my line and I happened to see it out of all the registers and bunches of flowers. I feel like it’s fate. So obviously I’m taking him home. But I was wondering what kind he is so I know how to care for him exactly. Thank you!

Life, Love, Snails and Slugs

Edit: If you only want to see the video and don't care about the post and background story just scroll right to the bottom

So recently my 13yr old daughter started fainting randomly and she ended up blue lighted in an ambulance from a smaller local hospital to the Oncology ward in a bigger hospital 50 miles away. When she arrived they had her hooked up to everything, cannulas in taking blood from one arm and needles in the other arm taking artery blood samples......a few days later she getting spinal biopsies and bone marrow samples to see if she had cancer or leukaemia. She had 6 blood transfusions over the 2 weeks we were there and at one point we thought we were going to lose her......and it had all happened so fast it was like a blur. Her red blood count was so low her resting heart rate was 170 and spiking upwards to almost 200, she was at severe risk of a heart attack due to her body speeding up her heart rate to account for the lack of oxygen carrying red cells.

She is my only child and i love her beyond any words can describe, to the point i ended up in hospital myself for a day for a 'semi' mental breakdown. Her mother was allowed to stay with her at hospital with a bed next to hers, but the 2 weeks of daily 100 mile round trips for visits - amongst the stress of updating the entire family constantly of how she was, coming home to an empty house etc were all adding up as all i had time to do when driving there was think of the worst - and i already have a litany of health problems myself (Severe Haemophilia, PTSD, anxiety, over what they did to us in the 80's - google contaminated blood scandal if interested.. Anyway i could go on, but i wont because this isn't about me, its about her....and snails :)). So it ended up she had an auto-immune reaction that meant her body was killing off her red blood cells, hence the fainting and bone marrow tests for cancer. The Dr's never got down to cause of the auto-immune reaction and after 3 months of tests, still can't pin it down. The main thing is, she's better now and running around dancing etc like a 13yr old should.

A few days before she was released from hospital, she was due to go on a bombardment of steroids, they thought that might just kickstart her immune system to stop attacking her red cells......however the next morning they took her bloods first to see where she was at before starting what could have been a 2 year stint on steroids, her body just miraculously started fixing itself, again, out of the blue, no rhyme nor reason, her red cell count had gone up instead of down like it had been before, then she'd need a blood transfusion to bring them back up again, rinse and repeat etc etc. However now, The Oncologist(s) - there were many now because this kind of thing wasn't suppose to happen - were all twiddling their thumbs and rubbing their chins. They thought she had the type of auto immune disease that didn't just 'fix' itself, but hers did. The other type of auto immune disease that they long ago ruled out, were the types caused by viruses etc, and normally after identifying the virus, then treatment would be given for the virus and then the person gets better....but they couldn't find any virus after god knows how many vials of blood they took, she was like a pin cushion.....she had the type that didn't fix itself, they were sure of that.....until she beat the odds and somehow did.

Apparently 1 in 10,,000,000 do what she had done. I cried more than I've ever cried in my life as my wife told me it over the phone and i just exploded into tears and couldn't stop. I'm the type of guy who normally tries to remain stoic and hold my emotions in, it just generally takes a lot for me to cry, but the tears came flooding out the moment i heard she was going to be ok.

My point of this post is to really just remind those with young kids or just kids of any age in general, to try and take in all those little funny moments you have with them. They are not young for long so pay close attention to special moments because later on, something might happen and all it'll be is a memory that will fade over time, or, like in my case, a video. Sorry for the cheesy story but i think it adds to the context.

The other day, i sat down at my table outside for my morning coffee and there was a slug on the table, and it just reminded me of this moment i had with my daughter when she was about 5yr old where i sat down, same table, for my morning coffee and there was a massive slug on the table which i pointed out to her. I had just bought a new phone at the time so thought i'd try out the timelapse feature on the camera, and this is the result. She saw what i was doing and thought i was making a video about snails and slugs so instantly started picking up every snail and slug she could find in the garden until the table was crawling with them (don't worry they were all put back where found, apart from Mr Big Slug who she found a new home in the garden for).

You can't even see her in the video apart from her arm, dropping mostly snails onto the table, lol....but had it not been for the slug i saw the other day drinking coffee at the same spot, i would have completely forgot about this moment, and video, which brought back a load of memories of us playing in the garden, looking for bugs etc. It put a massive smile on my face and totally made my day.

So, remember these moments when they happen, grasp on to them with both arms because life goes by in a flash. And our recent, completely unexpected out of the blue visit to the hospital really made me think back to when she was just a wee girl, and thanks to google photos for backing up the timelapse otherwise it may have been gone forever, just like my daughter could have been.

Does this black thing mean the snail is dead

I thought it was an empty shell so I picked it up and put it on a table for later. Came back the next day and it had crawled up a stick of incense and I picked it up looking like this.

Tips for choosing a thermostat with two outlets for heating mats?

Hey all!

I'm building my land snails two new terrariums, and to keep the temp around a nice 23-27°C (in an apartment that generally fluctuates a bit due to the cats being let out through the balcony door), I'm looking for a thermostat to accompany their heating mats. Currently looking to get each terrarium a 20cm x 20 cm Exo Terra mat, which is 8 W, or something similar.

Since the two enclosures are next to each other, and I'm working with a limited budget (and limited number of wall outlets lol) I really would prefer a thermostat with two sensors and outlets. So far the Pymeter on Amazon seems like a reasonably priced choice. I've seen some mixed reviews on here, does anyone have it? Will it do it's job or am I throwing my money away? The Amazon reviews look fine to me, but I'd love to hear some more thoughts and recommendations!

It's an on/ off thermostat, which seems like it would do it's job well enough to me, but if something else would be a better choice, I'm all ears.

Thank you!!🌿💚

My giant African land snail laid an egg and I don’t know what to do

I’ve had him for about a year or two and today, while swapping him over to a bigger tank, I saw one small white egg. I’ve heard of them laying tester eggs but I’ve had this thought for awhile now. Just any tips can work :>

I've got a planted freshwater aquarium that has two nerites and a few mini ramshorn hitchhikers. This guy showed up one day and I can't figure out what he is.

My Son Found a Slug-Now What?

Well, I never thought I’d be here but here I am. Not even sure if this is the right place because in all honesty, idk if a slug and a snail are the same thing but hey it’s worth a shot. Two days ago my son found a slug outside who we put in a plastic box and he’s been obsessed ever since. He’s affectionately named him “Snaily” and he’s been going EVERYWHERE with us. I’m looking to move little Snaily to a better home of sorts and not sure what container is best. Can anyone point me in the right direction? An Amazon link would be even better. He’s set up with dirt and leaves and twigs, what else do I need to do to keep him slugging around? Thanks in advance- a very happy 4 year old named Miles thanks you too!
