Why was Thomas Nast so damn anti-Irish?

I mean, the guy was really progressive. Here he is supporting the Indians, and Chinese people, and supporting a diverse American society during Thanksgiving. He was anti-Slavery. (Here too, and here, and here, though there were exceptions.) Very wholesome! Then he turns around with super anti-Irish comics like this or this or this or this or this. Why? What was his deal?

Vietnam, 1966, Leaflet 151-66: “The tunnel where you try to hide is never safe from the bombs of the B-52. The B-52 can search out its enemy anywhere” .

#❝

This crude early 1966 leaflet was printed by the 244th PSYOP Company as part of the I Corps Tactical Zone Joint PSYWAR Civil Affairs Center. The front depicts two Viet Cong squatting in a cave. Above, a B-52 bomber drops a bomb that is heading directly toward that cave. It is interesting to note that about four decades later that same general theme will show Taliban hiding in a cave in Afghanistan about to be bombed. I good idea is never obsolete. The back of the leaflet depicts Viet Cong flying through the air from the B-52 bombings. The text on front and back is: “The tunnel where you try to hide is never safe from the bombs of the B-52. The B-52 can search out its enemy anywhere” .
