I guess my dad (the white guy) was selling something and MA was a potential investor. But what was the product?
Natalya flew 840 sorties during WW2 as part of the 588th Night Bomber Regiment. It was an all-women regiment that flew WW1-era planes to conduct bombing missions on German forces. Because the planes were slow, they would idle their engines as they approached their targets to glide in with only the noise of the wind. They would drop their bombs, and then restart their engines. Because of their low altitude and weight of the bombs, they did not carry parachutes until 1944. The planes had no instruments or navigational tools.
Because of the surprising and silent nature of the attacks, the German soldiers observed that it sounded like the women flying these planes were riding on broomsticks, and were given the nickname of "Nachthexen" or "Night Witches". Nazi propaganda at the time attempted to make fun of the Soviet military for letting women make surprise attacks while the "cowards slept in their beds", but in truth the soldiers of the front line found these women quite frightening.
At the unit's largest, it had 40 planes with a two person crew. Over the course of 4 years, the unit flew over 23,000 sorties. Natalya died in 2005 at the age of 82.
