Namecoin is a blockchain that acts as a decentralized alternative to the DNS and public TLS CA's, which resists censorship, hijacking, and MITM attacks.
Namecoin uses the .bit top-level domain. .bit domains are "special-use" (not part of the DNS; similar to .onion); hence, to resolve .bit domain names, one must have either a copy of the Namecoin blockchain (a full node such as Namecoin Core) or a lightweight SPV client (such as Electrum-NMC or ConsensusJ-Namecoin).
ABOUT NAMECOIN (sign: ℕ; code: NMC)
Namecoin is a blockchain that acts as a decentralized alternative to the DNS and public TLS certificate authorities, which resists censorship, hijacking, and MITM attacks.
Namecoin uses modified Bitcoin software, and like Bitcoin there is a limit of 21 million Namecoins. Each Namecoin is divisible down to 8 decimal places. Namecoin uses the .bit
top-level domain. .bit
domains are "special-use" (not part of the DNS; similar to .onion
); hence, to resolve .bit
domain names, one must have either a copy of the Namecoin blockchain (a full node such as Namecoin Core) or a lightweight SPV client (such as Electrum-NMC or ConsensusJ-Namecoin).

SUBREDDIT RULES
No "Namecoin accepted at store X" styled posts. This subreddit is dedicated to the discussion of Namecoin development and problems/possibilities of the Namecoin protocol. "Buy X with Namecoin" posts are not welcome. Please pay for a reddit advertisement if you wish to promote your product or store.
Keep it Civil. Rational discussion is great. Weasel words and Personal Attacks do nothing but increase your own ego at the cost of an entire community's reputation and breadth of knowledge.
Read the FAQ first. Namecoin has a FAQ. If you're asking a question, check the FAQ first to see if it's answered there. This saves our volunteers time and allows them to focus on answering your more interesting questions.
Don't delete questions after getting answers. If you ask a question and then receive an answer, you shouldn't delete the original question from the public record. The people answering questions here are volunteers who are trying to benefit the public. Deleting your question after getting an answer eliminates the public benefit, and starts to resemble nonconsensual unpaid consulting. (Obviously, if you accidentally doxxed someone or something similar, you're more than welcome to delete that info from your question.)
No URL shorteners or referral links. URL shortening or rehosting services are a security hazard as they prevent readers from figuring out where a link will lead. Referral links produce a conflict of interest and incentivize posters to spam.
No misleading promotion of centralized resolution services. Promotion of .bit
resolution mechanisms that rely on centralized validation is not permitted, unless accompanied (in the same comment) by an explicit warning that such resolution mechanisms are centralized and allow the service operator to censor and intercept all .bit
traffic. (SPV validation, such as Electrum-NMC, does not qualify as centralized; nor does validation by another machine that is under the user's control, as can be done on iOS with a remote ncdns+Encaya instance.) Tools aimed at debugging-only use cases, such as block explorers, are exempt from this rule.
Breaking any of the subreddit rules listed above will result in a permanent ban without warning.

Sell your all Namecoin before it become zero!!
Fellow Namecoin Holders,
Right now, the market is testing us. It’s testing our patience, our belief, and our resolve. But let me remind you: this is not the time to panic—it’s the time to dig deeper and remember why we’re here.
What sets us apart from the noise in crypto? Why do we hold Namecoin with pride, even when the charts test our nerves? The answer is simple: Namecoin is not just another coin. It’s something truly unique, and I’m here to remind you why.
First, let’s talk about our foundation. Namecoin is not a random token chasing trends, nor is it another altcoin clone. It’s the first-ever altcoin, launched in 2011 as a fair, proof-of-work, decentralized system. Built on Bitcoin’s code, it introduced novel groundbreaking technologies to solve real problems. Namecoin pioneered blockchain-based decentralized DNS to enhance internet freedom and security. With no premine, no centralized control, and no shortcuts, Namecoin is the blueprint for integrity in the crypto space.
Second, let’s talk about utility. Namecoin isn’t just a store of value or a speculative asset. Its use case is clear: a decentralized naming system that safeguards digital identities and resists censorship. Whether it’s domain names, identities, or other naming functions, Namecoin offers a practical solution to real-world problems. This is utility with purpose, not gimmicks. It’s not just functional—it’s essential for the future of a free and open internet.
Third, let’s talk about our community. What made Bitcoin and Namecoin endure through the years wasn’t just technology—it was the people who believed in them. The developers, the advocates, and the holders who saw the vision and stayed the course created a movement. The Namecoin community is resilient, passionate, and visionary. We’re not here for the hype—we’re here for the mission. That shared purpose is what drives us forward, and it’s what will keep Namecoin at the forefront of decentralized technology.
Finally, let’s address the market. Are we facing challenges? Absolutely. But Namecoin has seen it all before—market dips, waves of new projects, and shifting trends. Through it all, we’ve remained steadfast, because what we’re building has real value. Bitcoin endured setbacks. Ethereum faced doubts. And yet, those who stayed the course became part of history. Namecoin is no different. We’re playing the long game.
This is not about get-rich-quick schemes or fleeting hype. This is about building something meaningful—an alternative to centralized control, a solution for censorship, and a future where the internet belongs to everyone. Real innovation takes time, patience, and dedication. That’s why we’re here.
So let this moment remind us of what we’re holding. Namecoin is decentralized, secure, and built for a better internet. It stands apart from the noise, and as the market learns to separate lasting projects from fads, our strength will shine through.
The future of Namecoin is bright. Those who believe in its vision and stand strong will help write the next chapter of its story. We are the pioneers, and this is only the beginning.
Stay strong. Stay proud. And stay the course. Together, we’re building something extraordinary.
HODL with confidence. Namecoin is here to stay.
Does anyone know any good options for storage? I see trezor no longer supports nmc and i don’t trust the exchanges…
If you want to discuss this topic, please comment.
What kind of effort would it take to list on exchanges like Binance?
What problems are there? This may be a time when platforms using OpenID might emerge.
Is there someone know namecoin max supply?🙂
Can I get a few IPs to add manually and get started? TIA
Is there anyone have news for namecoin or tor? There is no update few month.
I saw a post in the bounties section of the Namecoin forum describing functionality of signing a document using Namecoin chain. The post sounded a lot like a piece of software I have been working on for the last 3 years. This software is a peer to peer document exchange application. Currently it uses Polygon as an index for the documents while the actual contents of the documents are stored encrypted on IPFS. I am curious what the naming capabilities of Namecoin could add to the application and if there is any interest in discussing a "port" of the application to the Namecoin ecosystem. that application quicktemplate.app
It's already been more than half way through 2024. And it's touching to see the namecoin grow slowly. I hope the namecoin developers and the community people are always healthy and happy.
Thank you guys!
Thanks to the hard work of the developers, the Namecoin project is still alive. But people don't know this good project yet. What if they went public on a big exchange like Binance? (They're a lot of namecoin holders, maybe) We will be able to attract more people's attention and gain project team members.

Why people use like thi shit instead of Namecoin? I don't understand....
I'm worried that the project has been delayed for several years.
It would be wonderful if Tor was with Namecoin...
