Help! I'm trying to cut out objects from images using the pen tool and it's not working

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S2Kb_T9iiPU&t=74s

I've been following this tutorial step by step, but every time I set the clip it doesn't cut out the object I want.

I'm new to inkscape so any tips or advise would be helpful.

Help: Partial Soft edge in inkscape

Hi, I need some help regarding the soft edges. I applied the difference operation after blurring the circle but as you can see it leaves behind smooth line which I don't want. Cause I wanted the soft edges. How can I achieve this?

Center Line Tracing?

I want to copy in some text

Then; trace centre line

Then simplify so it looks kind of handwritten.

Then use AxiDraw to plot it with a real life pen, if you remember those, they were bigger in the 90s?

-
But center line tracing (autotrace) is not an option in my install.

Many thanx

Cutting From One .svg, Pasting To Another

I have an .svg file that has all the text in the style and colors I want. I need to crop out an unsharp logo from the file and replace it with a sharp version.

How do I go about it? I'm a raw beginner with vector graphics.

Need to Create an Image for my Cricut

Hi all. Brand new to Inkscape and not at all sure where to start.

I basically need to take a pattern like the one shown and turn it into an image with 3 layers (ideal) or 3 separate images (workable) as follows: 1) Numbers/Letters 2) Interior Lines 3)Exterior Lines.

I've never worked in a program like this, so I'm not exactly sure the easiest way to do this. I opened Inkscape and just tried erasing, whch seemed to erase everything except what I tried to erase, and in any case that would be really sloppy and take forever. Does anyone have suggestions as to how I could do this really quickly and easily? I feel like there's got to be an easy way to remove the sections I don't want so I'm left with just the single layer, then do this with 3 separate layers and save the layered image as .svg so when I import into Design Space (blech) I've got one image with three layers I can program each to draw, score, and cut respectively.

Ultimately the patterns will create low poly masks so accuracy is really important, so the more I can have done by machine the better it is for me. Someone suggested Illustrator/Inkscape but I'm so new to this I'm a little overwhelmed!

Problem with exporting masks to inkscape/plain svg

Hi, i am currently running into issues when trying to apply alpha masks to wide dashed strokes. Things work within inkscape, but when i view exported inkscape/plain svg in a browser the masked objects don't show up at all. See the following example (png export vs svg export): https://github.com/jonovotny/vectorized-realms/commit/96f6803a41826bc0228b10018adfec37fcd5d7ba

I think it has something with the location of the mask object within the xml structure, but I am wondering if there is a way to export it correctly.

glass of magnifying glass with reflections - how to mask/cut/remove overlaying reflection parts

I intend to export my svgs later on to jpgs for reasons that don't matter (to one part practice to adjust graphics accordingly).

png, is fine with for example a wooden frame since the remaining protruding parts are basically invisible

The glass looks fine with the wooden border of the object, which will later be added. But as soon as I export the object to JPG, the overextending reflections become visible with ugly borders. How can I ensure that the object ends at the border of the circle, but the appearance of the gradients remain exactly the same?

ugly as hell, how to remove the protruding parts - using the svg? (tried set mask and set clip so far)

How to quickly get a silhouette of an object

I'm trying to make a black silhouette of an object but really struggling to do this quickly.

The two ways I've tried:

  1. Using Bezier tool to trace the object and fill it in which produces a nice silhouette but takes ages.

  2. Trace the object which gets the outline perfectly and quickly but always leaves a few bits unfilled and when I try to fill them in inkscape forces a white border around the individual bits I tried to fill in.

Any help would be appreciated.

Help with bulk svg files to png (different sizes) on Windows 10 PC

Hello, as the title says I am attempting to convert 3,750+ svg files of different sizes (24x24 to 76x76) to png. Basically I need a working batch script that will convert all svg files in c:/svg folder and convert to png (same folder or c:/png doesn't matter) Trying to have to avoid having to do it manually. I am also not a fan of just going out there and downloading someone else's script and hoping it isn't malware or virus.

I did see older post for different version of Windows or directions for Mac and Linux but not one that will work with the current version of Windows 10.

I did install Windows Powertoys so that I can view the files in the file explorer but I waited for 30+ mins and only a very small fraction loaded. Windows can instantly view other file types but the svg are a royal pain to work with.

I download some free icon packs that I would like to edit (recolor) and save for my use.

Thanks

How would you like a node-based filter editor? 😃

Hi everyone, I am a student who wishes to contribute significantly to Inkscape. I would be taking part in GSoC this year and my proposal is to re-implement Inkscape's current filter editor with a node based one (similar to, but not the same as, https://svgfilters.com/).
I would appreciate if you could share your inputs on this, and let me know how this would help you, what features you would like to see, what features the present one misses out on, or any feedback on it's current UI/UX.
Here's a list of points I have collected and come up with till now, I hope to get some feedback and inputs on this:

Here are some drawbacks in the current filter effects editor:

  • For starters, the ease to work with decreases significantly as we increase the number of primitive effects in the filter. It is fairly annoying to understand the connections in the current format and the connections get seemingly more and more frustrating.

  • Users are limited to viewing parameters of only one primitive filter at a time. This creates an unsatisfactory user experience, since quite often, users would wish for ease in modifying parameters of multiple filters at a time, to get the desired look they wish to achieve. Doing so right now would be a tedious task, but this would be wonderfully resolved with the help of a Node-based workflow.

- Making connections between various filters, or the source channels, has no highlighting, and is not tactile.

  • There's no simple way to preview the effects of a filter upto some primitive filters. There are workarounds for this, but they are undesirable. However, this can be easily integrated in a node based editor by giving the option of providing a preview upto each filter.

  • The primitive filter editor gets very cluttered, which can easily be avoided with node groups, similar to the functionality offered in blender.

Thank you, and I hope to be able to help the artists here with this feature!

Need help separating pieces of my image.

I don’t want to individually trace everything this is an image I imported can you auto select? I’ve tried to trace the bitmap But I’m stuck on how I would go about separating every individual piece into its own layer. I’m only using ink scape because I’m not trying to pay for Adobe illustrator right now. Is this even possible?

[Help] Distort flat design onto cone template

Hi, I'm trying to create what will eventually be a stencil for a mug. If I print out the arch shape you see here it will wrap cleanly around a mug.

I would like to do my designs flat though, to make it easier for myself. Then warp them to fit into the arch shape.

I thought I could do this simply with the envelope deformation tool but matching the envelope up to the arch shape deforms the design out of the shape.

Is there a simpler way to achieve what I am looking for?

Thanks

How can I make this edge of the red object automatically match the edge of the blue object? Is there such a feature in Inkscape?

[ HELP ] How do i scale an object's dimensions separately?

New to inkscape and i'm losing my mind, i just need to resize the height of a rectangle. But when i do it scales the width to keep the proportions. I know that the lock on the top toolbar is there for that exact reason but whether i turn it on or off the results are the same. What am i missing? It should be such a basic operation

[Help] Is there a way to make 2 nodes get closer/further apart?

hello

I remember distinctly that i used to use a shortcut to make 2 not connected nodes come closer together and another to make them go apart. This was a couple years ago and i had no luck with google and chatGPT to figure out what that shortcut is. Does anyone know?

I am just curious about why each window has its own toolbar and tool pallets

I know its been like this from the beginning and there might be a good reason for it but why does every document I open have to have its own set of tools on the left and tabs on the right. It's very different from nearly every modern interface where the tools are permanently docked on the left and common to all the documents eg affinity and adobe.

When I have multiple documents open I commonly click on the wrong toolbar, of the wrong window and it just creates repetitive clutter where there doesn't need to be.

I am a developer and fully appreciate the amount of work involved in recreating a whole interface, And I use Inkscape exclusively over other vector software so the question comes from a place of love for Inkscape... so don't hate me.

open with grids enabled

is it possible to open inkscape with the grids option always enabled? i tried making a template with it enabled and setting it to default but that only works if i open the template, then start working. but my workflow usually isn't like that. i open projects from my file manager and when i want to edit an svg file i already have, i right click it and open in inkscape but that way doesn't have the grids enabled.
so just wondering if its possible to do this or if anyone has a workaround/cheat or something similar that would help me?

I have a black and grey image that I need to be black and white.

The grey is the background, but I think it's all one layer and not exactly a background. As I only pretend to do mild graphical editing, I am running into trouble in selecting the image from the background. Any suggestions on how to do this properly or what to google?

I keep seeing the instruction to select same color but that only appears to select my full image.

Thanks!
