FAQ

Q: Can you recommend a good hair dye?

A: In no particular order:

1) Manic Panic

2) Arctic Fox

3) Good Dye Young

The recommended dyes above are all endorsed as excellent options, and all vegan and cruelty-free. They all have different colors and products. To avoid damaging your hair, never use a (developer included) box dye.

Q: Do I need to bleach my hair first?

A: You don't need to bleach your hair, but if you want bright colors a bleached blonde range around level 8 is recommended; You can also dye just a few hairs to see how it will turn out.

Or oVertone has a bleach free, coloring conditioner for dark brown hair.

Q: How do I dye hair without bleaching?

A: Wash your hair with a clarifying shampoo, do not use conditioner, and allow your hair to fully dry before applying the dye.

Q: How do I bleach my hair?

A: You'll need to apply bleach and developer. You can view detailed instructions here. But instructions will vary depending on your hair and desired results.

Q: How do I remove dye from my hair?

A: The recommended way is to give your hair a Bleach Wash. Mix (1 part) bleach with (1-2 parts) 20 volume developer, mix with (6 parts) clarifying shampoo, and apply to damp hair for 10 minutes, before rinsing.

    Overlapped bleach

How should be using hair toner with overlapped bleach so my ends don’t deposit darker? What toner would apply evenly? I have a super short pixie and over lapping is impossible to avoid.

    Did I do something wrong??

    Hey,

So about a couple weeks ago I posted a post on here saying I want to dye my hair a deep dark purple. As stated on that post, I said I was going to use the Manic Panic colour in Ultra Violet (amplified).

When I received the colour in the mail it looked blue but I didn't think much of it because I was very excited but the more I looked at it the more weird it looked. I swatched it on a piece of paper and I know that a piece of white paper is not the same as hair but the colour is blue. It's so blue that it almost looks like electric blue. I don't understand why?? I looked at photos and videos of the same product but it looks the shade of purple I want there. I don't understand what went wrong?

I wouldn't mind the fact that it's blue if I were to dye it that colour but I want it to be purple.. I just don't get what went wrong and where?? Should I just go buy a new one?

Can I use pink dye to fill blonde hair before going brown, in order to avoid green tones later on?

Currently my hair is bleached to a pretty light blonde, and has been for a while. I want to grow out my dark roots to give my hair a break, and am using keracolor clenditioner.

I’ve used the mocha latte color a few times to add some dimension to my blonde/roots, and it’s worked well. I want to use a darker color next time that will match my natural color as it grows in. I’ll either use the mocha or espresso shade, paired with the mocha latte shade as a transition color between the brown and blonde- but i’ve read a lot of people complaining about a green tint being left over after the mocha or espresso shade, because it’s meant for brown hair while the mocha latte is meant for blondes.

I have some of their pink shade leftover from before, and am wondering if I could fill my blonde with the pink before adding the brown, to keep it from going green. Not sure if the pink will help my case in the same way that a red/orange would.

Also in case it matters, I do use clenditioner as more of a dye (apply on dry hair and leave in for x amount of time), versus applying it on wet hair in the shower as intended. And to be clear my goal is to maintain an ombré with minimal damage while i let my hair breather for a while. Not ready to commit to brown again:)

Any help is appreciated, sorry for long winded post!

looking for recommendations to achieve a warm auburn over medium brown?

Second-to-last image is my natural hair with no tint (with some blonde bits at the front leftover from a while back, ignore those lol). Hard to capture on cam but I have medium brown hair with some red tones in it that pop out more in direct sunlight. I love how my hair looks when I tint it auburn with orange/ginger semi permanent / veg dye (I recently use Revolutions For Brunettes line which is nice but a bit too red, I tried bleach london copper but I have to leave it on for like 3 hours to see any effect) but its a lot of work for it to only last like 3 washes. I'm looking for a permanent or long lasting semi permanent that will give me an auburn tone.

My issue is that a lot of times, even when tinting it, it comes out more red-auburn and almost pinkish. I am aware that a 100% gold toned copper would not suit me but I'm looking for something in the middle, like the pics shown of lana del ray and Julia Roberts. I also like the hair colour Eve Harper Close has (third pic), however I would want more of my natural colour and dimension to show through than that because I'm reallyyyy afraid of turning my hair bright orange lol. Lana's hair looks the most ideal to me, at least in that picture.

I've also attached an image of the dyes i've been looking at. My best friend has lovely hair and uses Nice and Easy Light Auburn but she's got dark ash-blonde / light light brown hair so unsure that its a good ref for me.

    Lana

    Julia

    Eve

my hair currently (ignore the blonde chunks)

hair dyes i'm considering - could mix two of the same brand, since I will need two bottles to cover my hair

How can I maintain my light brown hair from going darker?

Im talking about my natural hair color. I know this might not be the right subreddit for this question but I think there’s people here that have the enough knowledge to answer me.

I noticed that my hair is going darker as i grow older. 6years old me had fully blonde hair. My hair changed little by little turning to light brown But When i was like 10 years old my hair was light brown with honey blonde highlights especially noticeable at the ends. And I had some very blonde color (white like) on the roots in the front of my head. Now as a 19 years old I’ve cut my hair 3 times since the 10yo me and its like all highlights are gone. My hair stayed light brown but the blonde roots kinda disappeared just little stayed.

Moral of the story how can i avoid my hair from going darker. I don’t want to dye my hair so it doesn’t get damaged ( it’s already thinning) and I have very fair skin with red cheeks that i absolutely look terrible with darker hair.

    It’s frustrating ngl.

what to ask for blonde to strawberry blonde/copper

this is going to be a very dumb question, but i have no idea what im supposed to book in or ask for in quotes 😭 have had bleach blonde hair (usually get 1/2 foils, toner, cut 2-3 times a year) for 3-4 years, looking to go a light copper or strawberry blonde. i see options such as tint, baylyage, semi permanent dye, permanent dye, global colour etc. which of these takes blonde to a red/orange? i assume most if not all of those would make your hair a colour, but i just don’t really understand which is appropriate for my hair (roots are grown out around 4cm if that helps, light creamy blonde)

Will my hair dye bleed/turn a different color if I go swimming?

I want to dye my hair with a permanent dark brown dye(my hair is already fairly dark as I’ve been dyeing it for months, but it is naturally a medium brown). However, in a little more than a week I will be swimming in chlorinated water, probably for several days in a row. I have heard that it can make your hair green or cause the dye to bleed out. How bad would it be if I did it? Or should I just hold off for now?

How to fade black hair dye QUICK

I went to my usual colorist who dyed my hair perfectly 6 months ago a chocolate brown. Well this time I left with jet black hair. I have washed my hair 4 times with clarifying shampoo and notice no change. How many times does it take?

One thing I hate more than black hair on me is red hair, will this inevitably fade to a redish color? This happened to me once before and I rode it out for 6 months and my hair went to red and I died chocolate brown over it but it was tough to get it right.

Should I go back to the salon? Will they use bleach or color remover that will ruin my hair? I already have very course unruly hair. This is seriously hurting my self esteem. I hate it so so so so much and I’m not a patient person to ride it out

    Advice needed

For years I have yet to find a good Demi permanent hair dye that doesn’t go extremely dark in my hair. Every single one I’ve tried at Sally’s goes shades darker than the box. I used an ion Demi permanent blonde toner in my hair a few weeks ago and it literally tuned my hair medium brown. I had to wash it multiple times to fade it.

I’ve heard good stuff about redkin shades eq but have absolutely no idea how to read the labels. I’m trying to find dark honey blonde in a Demi permanent hair dye. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated, thank you 🙏

New to Dye, have loved the oil slick look since I first saw it long ago, is something like this possible for me (made a rough AI image) and what would the maintenance look like? I assume its impossible, but wanted to at least ask.

trying to achieve a coraline blue:) what do i do?

Recently I did a bleach wash on my red hair. It got all the red out and I decided to just lay on the colors for which I thought would help me get the color i was looking for. Once i took it out and dried it I noticed the issue😭 some parts look a muddy green color. I already know I should’ve toned but I did this so impulsively i completely forgot. anyways I bought more dye and thinking of redoing it. where should i go from here?

A black dye from sallys that doesn't fade so quickly?

Bleach blonde with black underneath, usually doesn't bother me when it fades I touch up 1x a year.

Decided to bring it into a full "underlayer" and have black under my bangs.

Looked amazing day 1 dark black and white hair.

Less than two weeks my bangs look brown and because it's thinner strands than the lower layers it is so much more obvious.

I get a specific bleach and developer but with black I always went with cheapest and never had an issue but with having black under these bangs I need something that holds longer.

I used generic black dye and 20 developer from sallys last time (probably my mistake getting that brand, but usually does just fine on lower layers)

Trying to pick up tomorrow morning from sallys only, any suggestions you can give if your active I'm listening!

Can I dye my blue hair to dark brown directly?

I have naturally dark brown hair, and out of impulse I dyed my hair blue. After a while I do not like the blue tint anymore and I just want my dark hair back. Can I dye it dark brown directly? Or is there something I should do first?
