Ghost in the Shell is a futuristic, police/noir thriller, set around the mid-21st Century, dealing with the reality of corporate power structures, and cyber terrorism, against a backdrop of technological advancement, and transhumanist cyberisation, in a Neo-Japanese state.
The narrative follows the covert operations division of the Japanese National Public Security Commission Section 9. This unit specializes in combating tech-based crimes, with a lean toward Spec Ops weapons and tactics, as well as an investigative focus on hacking, data mining, and more traditional methods of information sleuthing, and detective work.
Ghost in the Shell expands its scope beyond the narrative by exploring many rich Philosophical, Economic, Social, and Political themes. With a weighting on Existentialism and Humanism, Consumerism, economic class disparity, Industrial political corruption, and Politically radicalised splinter groups.

The film is called Mars Express.
Mars Express is similar to GITS in that it has detectives in a cyberpunk world with robots. The main protagonists are private detectives trying to solve a murder case. The running time is 89 minutes and the pacing is quite tight. It is a French animation and the style is very reminiscent of some of the 2000-2010 adult cartoons you may have seen. I'm creating this post to bring more attention to Mars Express because I want this film to be successful so that executives will want to take more risks in creating more artistic films.
In my opinion Mars Express does what GITS couldn't by telling a more grounded story and realistic characters. The characters in the film have more humanistic goals. I won't go into too much detail for fear of spoilers, but there are aspects of lust, greed, sadness and guilt in the film. I don't think these aspects were portrayed well in GITS. Another problem I have with anime is exposition dumps, especially in more mature anime like GITS where they think we, the audience, can't follow the story. In Mars Express, I cannot recall any exposition dumps that hindered the pacing of the film.
One aspect that I think is a turn-off is the animation. They use a lot of CGI and the animation is nowhere near the level of what GITS brought. Jérémie Périn, the director of the film, said in an interview that the film took 5 years to make and cost a total of 8.5 million euros which is considerably more than Production I.G. had for GITS, but I think that different working cultures and different ideals were at play here resulting in some very different animation. If you don't know Jérémie Périn, I wouldn't be surprised. His only notable work which reached levels of infamy was DyE: Fantasy, an obscure horror music video. I highly recommend to watch this music video as an appetizer to the movie if you do so watch it. It gives a glimpse of what to expect from Mars Express. You can find the music video here.
The great thing about this film is that it's given me some food for thought. Animation really can be as creative as it wants to be. You just need people willing to take risks. The film has only made 1.5 million euros so far, or about 16% of the total budget. I would imagine that marketing costs would push the budget over 10 million. It is sad that such artistic films are undermined by much bigger Hollywood blockbusters and that artistic integrity is always sacrificed for higher sales figures.
To be honesty, I don't think many of you going through this thread will watch the Mars Express. It doesn't have the same appeal as GITS that has spawned this subreddit, but I do think that even just a few people go out of their way and watch this film, that my post was somewhat successful and I didn't waste my time creating this thread.
I implore you to go out and watch this film. I cannot understate how amazing film is reaching if not surpassing GITS for me. Easily a top 10 film in 2024 for me and hopefully nominated for the Oscars. This film is only available on Apple TV, Prime video, and Youtube (Buy/rent) and can be purchased through amazon (bluray), hopefully in the future it will be even more accessible.
I was wondering if there are any other pieces of media you guys know of that has a highly competent group of people that take on some kind of kind of clever and malevolent threat while exploring philosophical issues like the GITS series?
Sometimes the shows says there attacking refugee camps or something and then they say they want to free the refugees. And then again it’s said they do their attacks because of the increase in unemployment and rising taxes because of the refugees. So my question is are the individual eleven pro or anti refugees? And while we’re here… is the prime minister pro or anti refugees? Maybe I’m just dumb but I really don’t get it.
What's the best way as of the time of this post? People ask here all the time about how to watch/read GITS, but it looks like the best place for Shirow Masamune enthusiasts. I think some of his books are out of print, therefore old books will be more valuable/expensive. There's Kindle versions on Amazon, but I would like to hold actual book versions.
Besides that, how much of the English versions have appropriate translations and non-flipped art? I read that the GITS manga has some loose translations in certain sentences that change context or subject, so I wonder if the same approach was done with the other works.
Basically what the title says. I'm thinking about buying a cd with the movie but I don't know anything about the series
Ok in Stand Alone Complex, Micromachine are used for a lot of thing, like infecting someone so you can wire tap them, treat cancer and such... but how much can Micromachine augment the human body in Ghost in the Shell?
For example lets say you wanted enhanced abilities but you didn't want to become a full cyborg, how much could Micromachine augment your body in comparison to a full body state of the art cyborg?
