Mouthpiece delivery

Originally the dc2 I purchased from gear4music was supposed to arrive between dec 9-16 but now it’s saying it’s gonna arrive February 18. I don’t know if I’m still able to cancel order or is it worth keeping the order

Instrument with less air requirement

Hello everybody, I am 40 and would really love to learn a brass instrument, but I get lightheaded quite easily. I tried a bass trombone, but its quite a lot of air needed. So I was thinking if euphonium with a smaller shank could be a good idea. I read quite a lot of posts here, and I am wondering

  1. Instruments with small shanks seem to have problems reaching lower tones or with lower intonation. I will not be a solo player, so I imagine I will not necessarily be focussing high tones. How big is the problem in lower regions?

  2. In a post I read that it seems to be a big step if you ever move from small to large shanks later down the road, again including new lightheadedness. Do you think it would be a good idea to intermediary step to go small shank first then later move to a bigger one, or face the inevitable and go large shank immediately?

  3. can you recommed an instrument I might be happy with in terms of full sound despite a smaller shank?

Thanks a lot in advance!

Anyone have experience with the XO1270(s)?

I snagged one open box for around 3.5k, wondering how it stacks up. I know a guy that plays one, but haven't had time to talk to him about it.

Microphone for low brass

I’m going to play around with multi-track recording over the holiday break to create some recordings of myself playing holiday duets and quartets. I have experience with video and audio recording/editing, but I’ve never recorded instruments, only spoken word.

Those of you that have recorded low brass instruments like euphoniums, what mic did you use? Were you happy with the results? Thanks!

Slurs??

Are these slurs in horovitz mvmnt 3 actually slurs or are they phrase markings? There are a few parts of this song where there definitely are phrase markings but here they clearly look like regular slurs... but listening to most if not every pro recording, they triple tounge a few to all of these notes each phrase, (especially arpeggios) Is that the intended way or is it just easier to tounge a lot of these notes? Because cleanly slurring all of these is proving to be very challenging >_<

I need help with finding a good cheap Euphonium

I come from a pretty low income family, and I've been trying to find a decently priced Euphonium to save for, because it has become my passion to pursue a music career.

Upper register exercises

I’m struggling to develop my high range, especially when it comes to adding to the range. I’ve tried different exercises to develop this, but I can’t hit higher than a Bb4 somewhat consistently. I was curious if anyone had any exercises they did to improve on this. Any help would be appreciated!

I play far better on a marching baritone than a euphonium

Does anyone know why this may be? Even when playing with the same mouthpiece, my tone and articulations are far better on my marching baritone (an old blessing model) than on my euphonium (an intermediate compensating Yamaha). Any help is appreciated.

I got to try the Wessex Festivo

A couple of weeks ago I got to try a Wessex Festivo and I thought you'd probably be interested in my experiences.

I tried out the euphonium for about two weeks to decide whether I wanted to buy it. In the beginning I was very enthusiastic and impressed. The build quality was excellent. It looked very well finished and felt sturdy. Quite a beautiful horn. So far most of the Chinese brass instruments I've encountered were cheap and poorly constructed. But not the Festivo!

It played very free blowing. Also intonation was great, not perfect but no euphonium ever would have perfect intonation. Compared to my old compensated miraphone it's quite an improvement. The miraphone always felt a bit stuffy. The light blowing would have been perfect for my pop/folk band. Higher registration was also easy to play. It felt and sounded very modern. I would describe the sound as bright with a clear attack.

About the unique design:

The design of the first and second valve tubing was very clever. The upright position stopped water from collecting. In the two weeks of using it I never had to empty it. The water key on the fourth valve is also an update compared to the traditional designs. But the water keys were very awkward to open while blowing at the same time. Also the compensating tube of the first valve would collect water.

Although I'm used to playing a four valve rotary tuba, I couldn't get used to operating the fourth valve with my right hand. The angle didn't feel right to me. Im used to playing with "curved" fingers instead of "straight" fingers. Which just didn't seemed to work. The design calls for straight fingers to operate all of the valves with the right hand. I also tried operating the fourth valve with my left hand, but that made holding the horn also more awkward.

In the end I wasn't able to find a comfortable position to hold the euphonium with my left arm. I tried resting it on my fore arm but that didn't work very well. Most of the time I would hold it with my left hand and tuck my elbow close to my body for support. That sorta worked but was for from optimal.

Because of the awkward design of the instrument I decided not to buy it. I just couldn't get used to it. Which was a shame because I was really impressed by the quality and how it played.

However I am happy to have tried it. I've been following the developments of Wessex tubas for about 6 years now but was never able to try one. Wessex is relatively new to the brass market with a lot of interesting and unique designs, but they are really onto something.

This experience has also made me want to try other Chinese euphoniums. I'm thinking about trying John Packer's midrange and Thomann's professional range euphoniums next.

Deciding between Wilson 2900 (or Q90), Yamaha Neo 642, Yamaha 842, or a Besson

Hello Reddit euphonium players! As mentioned in the title, I will soon buy a new euphonium and I'll be choosing among those models above. The budge is not a problem at the moment, I'm just looking for the best euph I could get and the one I could grow the most while using it. I love the sound of the Neo, but I felt like the response of the 842 is amazing, I also tried the Wilson 2900, but I found the sound too be a bit thin? (I am not sure how to explain). I'll definitely be playing some Bessons before deciding too.

Any consideration from players of those instruments would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Cleaning euphonium in a bath with hard water

Hi everyone,

I became a proud owner of a Besson 765 and have used it for a month or 2 now.

Im planning on deep cleaning it this weekend but the water at our apartment is abnormally hard.

What should I do to prevent limescale from building inside the instrument?

Also any tips for first time cleaning?

Thanks in advance

Yamaha YEP-321 vs Besson BE165 (or other suggestion?)

I'm an adult looking to play in a local symphonic band and it's my first time purchasing an instrument instead of renting. I know the YEP-321 has the hearts of many and I've seen that it's recommended for high school players. I am trying to find something a bit more advanced than high school/college level, but still considerate of my finances (ideally under 5k).

So far I think I'm considering the YEP-321 or the BE165. I was also considering King and Jupiter, but I think they have less consistent reviews? Let me hear all of your thoughts!

Black Friday euphonium MP sale

Hopefully this is allowed. I am only affiliated with the store as a customer.

Mead Euphonium MP on sale for Black Friday. Available now at 99 dollars new.

https://www.brassandwinds.com/collections/bfcm50/products/denis-wick-model-dw4880e-sm4m-steven-mead-4m-euphonium-mouthpiece-in-gold-plate-brand-new

The store is located in the Seattle area. I have bought a tuba from them that they shipped to me after trying it in Seattle. I enjoyed my experience, and am on their email list, which is why I saw this price.

I know a lot of people ask about mouth pieces here, and getting a mead for 99 is a very good deal.

Euphonium recommendations for a Bass Trombone player

So, I'm getting older and I've developed shoulder problems. I love to play my Bach 50B Bass Trombone, but after an hour of playing my shoulder is aching. I'm thinking of switching to Euphonium.

Can anyone recommend a brand/model Euphonium that would be good for me to switch to? I play in a really great community band and I would love to continue doing that.

Baritone B.C. Fingerings Practice Scratch Game

I made this mobile scratch game to help with memorizing notes and their fingerings https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/1102602255/fullscreen/

There's also a non mobile version that feels a bit more emmersive, but on this version you can't choose if you want timed or not. (If you know how scratch works then you can just remove the time sprite) https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/1102569929/fullscreen/
