I just switched from saxophone to baritone for marching band. Any tips on how not to sound like a dying whale and on how to maintain notes?
Any gay guys here?
I play the piano, cello, double bass, recorder and now recently flute (which has been going well).
I want to venture into the world of brass but don’t know where to start. I like all brass instruments equally (though maybe not trombone since my friend already plays that and would hate me copying him) so which should I start with? Looking for cheaper side too but also life long. Not a main instrument.
Also, should I know any heavy differences? It’s a different family so I assume that there are many, but anything like “what I wish I knew” and stuff.
I’ll probably only start in a year or two but I’ll forget to ask by that time.
Edit: I plan to start all brass instruments if that helps.
i assume the answer is no, but i want to make sure. my marching instrument has a ton of scratches and ive googled things i could do about it other than get it buffed. the only thing that popped up was sanding it, but im guessing that's not a good idea. any ideas?
So I'm about to purchase an alto horn but realized I really don't know any music for alto horn. I was thinking of attempting to make a quartet out of Second Suite in F's 4th mvmt with 2 euphs and 2 alto horns or 1 euph, 1 trombone, and 2 alto horns but I'm unsure about it. I would mainly be using it for duets or quartets with my euph and trombone. If I were to go a bit bigger and put it into a brass quintet that got rearranged, would I have the alto horn replace the trumpet or the French horn part?
Anyone got any suggestions for Alto horn music (solos, ensembles, stuff like that) and music that would make good duets for Alto Horn and Euph? Or even advice about the Alto Horn in general?
Complete newbie here - I want to learn a new instrument and have never learned a brass instrument before.
I want to learn the trumpet, but I love the sound from the flugelhorn. Is it more practical to learn the trumpet first and then learn the fugelhorn, or can I go straight to it?
Saw this in an Instagram reel and was wondering what it was
I play trumpet in a marching band and i like the trumpet and was wondering if you guys had any suggestions for a next instrument to play
I know this is a highly debatable topic, and I have my own unique thoughts, but what are y’alls thoughts on buzzing? Useful? Useless? Why or why not?
To me, its rather useless. The primary goal is to vibrate and resonate the instrument, not the lips. The vibration of the lips is simply a byproduct or reaction to the instrument vibrating.
Never hit them before in my life, they sounded crap but I hit them!
Anyone know what brand this is?
Hello! I’m hoping to buy a decent second hand trumpet as a present for someone who wants to get back into playing, but I don’t know a thing about brass — what should I be looking out for?
There’s lots of trumpets on marketplace, ranging from $100 to thousands. I’d obviously love something on the cheaper end of that scale.
I’m in Melbourne, Australia.
Found this on E-bay for roughly $80 USD
This may be the early 1900s or late 1800s for all I know it could have been 1980s! It has a weird threaded rod on a tuning slide that I believe was for Tuning while playing, but I just bought it off of E-bay. Any help identifying this? Does not appear to have a serial number, so I think it is from the late 1800s.
I can't discern any branding on it either, other than it says Austria on the second valve.
Also! The seller was told by the person the bought it from that this was a flugelhorn, so it might be and old alto flugelhorn model? Although the seller also first bought it thinking it was a french horn.
Looking into buying a new baritone horn, I’ve been recommended the one above by my teacher, but can’t seem to find any reviews / demonstrations of it- anyone help?
I found it store in my house what is this? i searched but couldn’t find anything similar ( I don’t know much about brass instruments )
Brass players of Reddit: My son has decided he wants to go to school for music performance; however, he lacks the local support to find appropriate pieces of music for him to use in college auditions. I was hoping folks in this subreddit would be willing to help me help him (I have music background, but not in brass).
As a litmus, he received full marks playing Honor and Arms for NYSSMA (Level 4).
Thank you!
Why is Bb and F so much easier than the other pitches without pressing any valves or changing slide position
Hi I'm a student, I have been playing for 4 years and am currently at grade 6. I play a jp072 horn and have been looking for a upgrade. I'm looking for suggestions that are under £1000. Any advice or suggestions would be great as I don't really have anyone to ask Thanks
Hi :)
I am looking for suggestions of melodic orchestral brass music. I heard a street band the other day and it was beautiful but when I just look up "brass band" on spotify I never find this kind of peaceful "romantic" music (in the musical sense of the word).
I always find super upbeat pop covers or "circus" music which is not really what I am into.
Thanks for your suggestions :)
If I made a pdf of like 100 different lip slurs and lip flexibility excersizes for trombone would anyone be interested in buying something like that for a small price (like $2 or just another small koha)
I have a Schilke 50 small shank and am thinking about upgrading my instrument which will most likely make it a large shank this realization came to me when I played in a loaner instrument (Yamaha marching baritone) which I had to use a Yamaha mouthpiece that came with the baritone and I don’t like Yamaha mouthpieces they are not comfortable for me and am looking into a DW or Schilke but am open to suggestions, I saw a Schilke 52 and am not sure if that mouthpiece is good
