Yamaha trombone at auction

Going to an auction tomorrow and have no way to know any more information than what's in this photo before I get there.

I'm interested in getting this to start learning to play, but not sure what a reasonable price would be.

All I have to go on is this photo to figure out how much I'm willing to bid. I'm thinking maybe $300-400 max?

Any advice to help estimate a fair price is appreciated.

Mouthpiece Dilemma

Hello Trombone Reddit!

I want to upgrade my mouthpieces from my Bachs, 12C/7C (all small shanks) to something a little more professional for my fully grown lips.

With my current 12C, I get a very bright sound that is good for jazz but too bright for a more symphonic sound. It was my first mouthpiece and has served me well. The problems comes from my 7C. I get a much darker sound and have a lot of control but now I sound much more airy, where I would prefer to have a much fuller symphonic sound.

I have been interested in the Warburton convertible styles of mouthpieces (as it would save me money, and I am a big fan of their euphonium mouthpieces—played on them extensively). There appears to be no way that I know of to trial these mouthpieces though, and I'm not sure what exactly the good equivalents of them would be for my current Bachs.

I think what I'm looking for is small shanks, with similar rims sizes but more cup depth for my symphonic and less for my jazz horn.

Any other suggestions would be appreciated and considered!

I need serious embouchure help.

I’m a high school (freshman) trombonist who spent most of his middle school career puffing my cheeks, not tightening my lips properly, and not playing with enough volume. At the end of middle school I decided that I actually wanted to fix my own issues and try to become a good musician.

I’ve hit a learning curve way too early. Around 2 months ago now my trombone started making this spitty, gravely sound whenever I play outside (I’m in my high schools marching band, so this is a huge issue.) I sort of fixed it, but a new problem has occurred. My intonation is incredibly inconsistent and for whatever reason I cannot seem to make a good sound with my instrument.

It feels like I’ve shifted something in my embouchure every day for the past month and a half, and nothing seems to help at all. There’s a senior trombone I’m friends with through the marching band who I’ve gotten tips from. Those tips have helped, but only to a certain extent. I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong and I’d appreciate some advice on what is proper embouchure, as well as breathing or other things that could be causing these problems.

The problems are: Very inconsistent intonation, sometimes it sounds fine, sometimes good, most of the time shitty. There’s still the occasional spitty and gravely sound. These issues become more prominent whenever I increase in volume. If anyone has tips on what they think I’m doing wrong, I’d appreciate it very much.

Update: Tried learning Low Rider to play with my son

I had originally asked if it were possible to learn Low Rider in 4 weeks with never having played the trombone so I could play with my son on his last night in marching band.

Word from the sub was that it was next to impossible. Turns out, you were right. However, I was able to learn “Go Big Red” and play with him. I also could not have done it without confessing to him what I was doing, and him helping me with mouth form and position. It provided us a way to bond and a memory that I, and hopefully he, will have for the rest of our lives.

Side note: it is not his last night as we made the playoffs, so he has at least one more week of fun with his band mates.

Europe: gold brass or yellow brass

I’ve got a question about large bore tenor trombones in Continental Europe. Would you please say if professional trombonists use mostly gold brass bell trombones? Or yellow brass ones?

Soloing on the lower end

Does anyone know any examples of trombonists soloing on the lower end? I want to try to incorporate lower notes in my soloing but I’m lacking examples.

How should I play this line?

Going from the embouchure of the E at the beginning to that of the G at the top is proving to be difficult, any tips?

obvious answer but i need someone to tell me anways

I'm a highschooler who's just watched https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y9t2qrL9Q7I and wants to play the HAAG Contrabass trombone in F. I've found one on the market for $16,000. I swear to myself that i'll practice it if I get it. I'm decent at my trigger tenor trombone, but i'm not the greatest, nor do I constantly seek out practice time. I'll probably run out of gas and stop practicing after a few months. Should I get the contra? Obviously not, but still, wouldn't it be great to have such an instrument? I'm just straight up fantasizing abt having a beast like that.

How would I put my trombone down?

Two questions.

  1. If I'm resting with my trombone (not playing it but still holding it), how should I hold it?

Right now, I rest it on the bottom of the slide with the bell facing up since theres a black rubber point that I think it meant for that.

  1. How would I place my trombone if I have to leave it temporarily? Do I place the bell on a chair?

Thanks

any other beginner 'bone players that have other primary instruments?

I'm in my 40s and just decided to start playing trombone. I'm an experienced bass and guitar player. I've been creating loops of simple chord progressions (blues, 251, etc) on a looper, and practicing my trombone chops to the loops. Sure beats reading from a book and following a metronome! Curious to know if there are others like me here, and what tips you might have. My goal is to play proficiently in jazz jams and start writing my own song featuring more trombone parts. Thanks!

edited to add: I'm also taking infrequent lessons with a local trombonist to ensure I'm not developing bad habits with regards to articulation, tonguing, slurs, etc.

Is it worth getting a pBone Trombone?

I don’t play any brass instruments and I want to learn, I won’t be a serious player though. I’m mostly going to record classical stuff with it, and since I don’t have a job it feels like it’s worth it because of the price. What do you guys think?

Guys I don’t know what to do

I played euphonium for a while in a separate ensemble and absolutely loved it and I would love to play it a lot more. It just seemed so great to me to be able to play fast technical passages without having to worry about slide positions. Anyways, if I were to completely switch instruments to main the euphonium, I feel like this past 7 years is completely in vain. I have spent thousands of dollars on trombones over the years and it feels like too much just to stop now. What are your thoughts?

Is this range good?

This is about my range on my F trigger trombone, is this good? (I’m a high school freshman, and that lowest note and highest few notes don’t sound good but I can hit them.)

Looking for opinions on alto trombone mouthpieces

Hey colleagues!

I'm looking to get a new alto trombone mouthpiece and I'm open to suggestions!

I'm currently using a Back 5G mouthpiece on my tenor and a narrow Bach 5 tenor mouthpiece for my alto. I'm a fan of the Bach 5G on the tenor and also a fan of the idea of keeping the rim size for the alto mouthpiece similar to the rim size of the tenor I'm currently using, just a more shallow mouthpiece.

I would also be open to trying an alto mouthpiece with different dimensions if its really good!

Anyone know a good alto mouthpiece that matches that criteria?

Thanks alot in advance!
