Besides the obvious shout out he deserves for creating the series, I'm not sure how many of you have ordered stuff from his online store; but it is pretty great.
I pre-ordered the "Life Lessons from Dinosaurs" book and it arrived early and autographed with a dinosaur he drew. I then ordered two Dinotopia: Timestone Pirate posters, which after a snafu during shipping (James himself responded to the support email), arrived in great condition and again, autographed!
Just major kudos to him!
So I found that Amazon (with freevee I believe) dinotopia is available for streaming! But not just the orginal mini series - but with the Hall mark TV series that came out with 6 episodes. My only question is how do I watch the other 7 episodes that came out in other regions? VPN didn’t seem to work but would just like to be able to watch with a heavy dos of nostalgia lol
Okay, I feel like I’m going insane because I remember there being a sketch in the original Dinotopia book of a person riding on a Triceratops’s head with a caption saying, “Triceratops enjoys wearing people as hats” or something to that affect but I’ve flipped through this thing 5-6 times and I can’t find it anywhere. Am I misremembering some other media or did I make it up in my head completely?
I love this book series since I was a kid who couldn't read at the time, but I'm disappointed that it didn't get a resurgence when Jurassic Park/World and Apple's dinosaur documentary came around. You would think Hallmark would take advantage of this, but yet again it is Hallmark.
I am also disappointed that there's only been four games. 2003 Dinotopia: The Sunstone Odyssey, 1995 Dinotopia on DOS, 2002 Dinotopia: Game Land Activity Center, and 2002 Dinotopia: The Timestone Pirates. But I'm not surprised as the world of the series is complex, detailed, diverse, and historied, but also pacifistic. And think that what makes it so difficult to make a Dinotopia game. There's little action in the four main books and what action there is consists of chase scenes (I'm not counting the Skybaxs scenes), so trying to faithfully adapt Dinotopia into a videogame does present a challenge.
So if you were in charge of making a game set in Dinotopia, how would you tackle it?
Figure I’d share this too, even though I didn’t capture much of it. Trust me it’s very, very well made.
Does anyone know what the giant fish's species is in the miniseries? Numerous websites say it's a Dunkleosteous, but I don't rememberit ever being mentioned in the series proper.
Breath Deep, Seek Peace.
Not long agon I bought a used copy of First Flight. Sadly, because it was used, it was missing a portion of cards needed to play that included card game. Does anyone here have scans of all the cards from the game?
Thanks!
Does anyone remember if the species name for the messenger birds in the miniseries or TV series? What about Zippo's species?
Anything at all such as cats, dogs, birds, rodents, reptiles?
I'm only asking because I haven't read Dinotopia since it was first released, and now I see there's so many new books, I was just wondering if the issue of "pets" was discussed in any of them?
Hello.
I am Nicholas.
I came by to give out an invitation to five sites or interactive stories or wiki-like sites.
They are all in dedication to Dinotopia by James Gurney.
I am a member of all five.
I hope you all enjoy them!
The first one is a proboards site. If you want to access the cool stuff, Registering is 100% free and the people there are very friendly. It has art, Roleplay and fanstories sections as well as a section to introduce yourself.
https://ombdinotopia.proboards.com/
The Other two are discord servers.
They both have interesting channels that could catch your interest in Dinotopia.
The Unofficial Dinotopia Server
The fourth one is an interactive fanfiction on a website Called: Writing.com.
Registering to become a member is 100% free and adding chapters to the interactive story is the goal.
Dinotopia Interactive Fanfiction
The final one I can think of is one you will very much like.
It is the largest and most comprehensive unofficial Dinotopia encyclopedia,
currently encompassing 1,885 articles.
Attention, My dinotopians! Check out this link!
I asked how this Tabletop Rpg for Dinotopia's campaign's story will be told. This campaign will ( Hopefully ) be told through "in-person" role play, much like a Dungeons and Dragon session.
Hello, I got this Dinotopia set from the thrift store and I am trying to figure out what they are as I can't find this set any where online. I know they are all prints but these are on a cork backing and laminated almost as if they are supposed to be used as place-mats. The box looks official so I don't think it is fan made.
As I said I can't find them any where online but I am probably just searching for the wrong thing.
TY for any help you can give. Please ignore the dog hair on the rug.
I'll start things off, and then we can see where the community takes this. Hopefully, someone in the community with the appropriate skill set or connections could use all this as a springboard to make this idea look a bit more real and know where to go for legal matters regarding the franchise to ensure minimal legal issues come up with the game in the event it moves out of being hypothetical.
So, I've been thinking that it could be fun for Dinotopia to come in with an MMORPG where you can explore the island. I thought it would be fun to be able to choose different archetypes of the kinds of people that could wash up on the island. I think the archetypes to choose from could be separated into different groups, maybe named for the different pillars of play, something like: Exploration, Social, and Combat categories.
The game could forgo a leveling system in favor of an Experience Point pool that can be used to advance the Skill/Ability/Talent/Advancement Tree for each archetype, to make up for the absence of levels; maybe the tree could have a few additional grouping options.
For example:
The Exploration Grouping could be broken up into something like: Archeologist, Survivalist, Cimber, National Park Employee
The Social Grouping could look like something like: Actor, Anthropologist, Student (College/High School), Linguist
The Combat Grouping could look something like: Soldier (rank?), Martial Artist (choose from a few Asian and European types), Sport/Game Hunter, Weapon Enthusiast
Each option could have a few features, like the Archeologist, Linguist, and Anthropologist being able to start with extra languages; with the Linguist being able to learn the languages of the more intelligent/enlightened Dinosaurs faster than most of the other archetypes.
After character creation, the game would likely start with you washing up on shore somewhere on Dinotopia and going through the introductory/tutorial bit; how you handle things, as your character, is still completely up to you.
And that's everything I've managed to think about/cook up; it's on everyone else to see where and how this goes.
As a kid I used to have a few of the dinotopia books and absolutely loved them. As time went on I forgot about them and they became a distant memory. Recently after a conversation with a friend about dinosaurs they popped back into my head and I was reminded of the beautiful illustrations from the books. I want to get a collection of them and was hoping if anyone in this sub knew where I could find all of the books and if there is a chronological order to them.
EDIT: Sorry if I wasn't specific enough, the only book I distinctly remember having was Dinotopia, a land apart from time. And it was this big hardcover book which I'm assuming is a part of a larger series. If anyone knows where I can find those books or the names of them I'd much appreciate it!
