Rules for r/craftofintelligence

Rules that visitors must follow to participate. May be used as reasons to report or ban.

1) Be Civil

It is perfectly okay to disagree with somebody's ideas but it is not okay for discussion to devolve to insults. Repeat violators will be banned. Let's keep this sub fun, intelligent, and informative for everybody and free from subreddit drama.

2) NO CONSPIRACY THEORIES

Speculation on a topic is one thing but full blown conspiracy theories (e.g. JFK, 9/11, US created ISIS etc.) will not be tolerated. Conspiracy theorist logic is not indicative of sound analysis.

3) NO LEAKS OR SHARING OF CLASSIFIED INFORMATION

Content from Wikileaks or any other source like it that is used for the unauthorized disclosure of sensitive or classified information will not be tolerated. Offenders will be banned.

4) NO PARTISAN POLITICS

Nobody cares who you are voting for, against, or why you dislike them. However, intelligent criticism or defense of policies germane to this subreddit is perfectly acceptable as long as it does not devolve to purely partisan political sniping. We understand that in the current environment it is extremely difficult to remain totally apolitical when it comes to analyzing the issues pertaining to this subreddit. Please do your best to use sound arguments and to keep politics out of your analysis. Content from BLATANTLY political sources (I.E. Breitbart, Mother Jones, Oathkeepers, Huffington Post etc) or blatant political opinion pieces that offer nothing of real analytical value to this subreddit are not allowed. Untrustworthy, off topic and deceptive articles will not be tolerated (I.E. Wikipedia, ZeroHedge, RT, etc.). Investigative journalism from newspapers of record (New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, LA Times) and other well established sources known for publishing quality investigative content are fair game. There are subreddits dedicated to discussing purely partisan politics and this is NOT one of them. Please do your best to keep this sub from turning into the cesspool that is r/Politics.

Considering Henri Navarre was a career veteran in intel, how come he wasn't able to do accurate forecasting for the planning of Dien Bien Phu?

To this day this absolutely dumbfounds me.

In World War 1 Navarre served in Cavalry often in scouting roles. In World War 2, he was involved in the intel and planning espionage roles for Free France when he wasn't out leading armored divisions. In fact before the war he even drafted a plan to assassinate Hitler back when his main job was in the German intel of French general staff!

So as someone so affiliated with intel-gathering for much of his military career, why the heck couldn't he spot the defects of fighting in a location like Dien Bien Phu? I simply cannot believe the kind of mistakes made in the battle esp during preparation months before fighting considering the resume he had!

Verity - 'AI Safety Clock' Launches

The Facts

  • Last month, the IMD Business School launched its AI Safety Clock with the goal of "mak[ing] clear that the dangers of uncontrolled AGI [artificial general intelligence] are real and present," according to its creator, IMD professor Michael Wade.[1]
  • The clock, which currently sits at 29 minutes to midnight, claims to monitor three key factors — AI sophistication, autonomy, and physical integration. These are monitored via information from over 1K websites and nearly 3.5K news feeds.[2][3]
  • IMD said the clock is "inspired" by the "Doomsday Clock," which was first established by the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists in 1947 to "convey threats to humanity and the planet." As of January 2024, the Doomsday Clock is set to 90 seconds to midnight.[4][5]
  • Wade claims that while AI is currently "largely under human control," it is also "already making gains," including in autonomous military drones and social media bots. He's calling for a "global approach to AI regulation."[1]
  • Earlier this year, the US, UK, and EU, among others, signed the first-ever legally binding international AI treaty. This followed other AI commitments since 2023, including the EU AI Act, the Bletchley Declaration, and a Group of Seven (G7) AI agreement.[6]
