It currently does not lay eggs. Today I found this in her nesting box.
Merlin has been living with a good friend since October. He is now 8 months old and his development is amazing. He is an incredibly great roo ❤️
Just wanting to confirm… is the yellow stuff something to be concerned about? Someone else said it looked like dried egg yolk so I’m gonna have to keep an eye out for that. If not- anyone know what it could be/any treatments?
Hello!! I have a flock of 3 orpingtons and 3 bantam silkies. The silkies are new to the flock and doing well except for the fact that they won’t go IN the coop at night. I have a coop with a run. Once dusk hits-the orpingtons go up the little ramp and roost inside. I know silkies don’t roost but I would like them inside at night to protect from predators. Right now they just huddle up under the coop. So I go out every night, walk them up the ramp like a kid with a Barbie and put them inside. It’s getting to be annoying. Someone said try and lock them inside for 3 days for them to get the message that home is home. So they are in there together (plenty of food and water obviously) and doing ok. Some folks said do it for a week. So should I do it for a week? What if it doesn’t work? Then what? TIA
What does everyone recommend for a camera to keep an eye on the ladies?
We were free ranging for almost a year but just had another bobcat take out 3 chickens & feel it’s best if we only let them out when we are outside.
That being said, we are upgrading their coop, building a much bigger run & would like to add some nice cameras to help scare off predators in real time.
Any recommendations are appreciated 😄
Flock of 4, only she’s affected. She also had visible feather loss around her neck.
I love these buggers so much but man do they make walking hard
“No idea, a couple of months ago 1 disappeared , yesterday , another one was gone. But... This morning all were gone. I found the 4 but, that's 6 that just disappeared” (These aren’t my chickens, they’re my grandmas. Does anyone have any ideas?)
Ok so I've been raising chickens for a few years now for eggs i currently have 11 hens (1 got grabbed by a fox earlier this year). Me and my wife are planning on expanding our flock to 24 hens. We're talking about getting 2 roosters also so I can sell eggs and chicks (get some more money coming in more than just the eggs that i have been getting). So my question is could anyone give me a decent estimate on how many unfertilized eggs and how many fertilized eggs i might end up getting in a day or week. Basically i don't want to end up getting more baby chicks than eggs because I already know i have a demand for the eggs and i don't want to be telling people that I don't have eggs because too many of them are fertile.
My chickens sleep on my bed because of reasons. But they are little crap machines and they ruin my sheets. So I want to kick them off of my bed but idk how much stress thatll cause them. Because I am like their mama chicken, and they are very attached to me. This is my first time taking care of chickens so dont spare seemingly obviously details. They are a month old.
For the record, these aren’t just mine. My mum bought them for us but theyve become my responsibility. And we had a coop but a horse broke it and also my mums foot, so it might not be ready for a while.
So I’ll try to keep this brief and stick to the details. My hens love being out and about and free range. I have 3 black and white barred rocs, and three more hens that I’m not sure of their breed, but they’re brown with yellow undersides. I have a Sentinel Coop by Producer’s Pride that I bought from Tractor Supply. If anyone knows what I’m talking about, they have these two pinwheel vents that I can close. I shut them in their sliding door last night.
Anyways, now it’s morning, but it’s windy and cold. Do I just keep them shut in today? Ive never put their food and water inside their coop because there’s not a lot of room but I’m considering it today. But then they’ll be in mostly dark all day. I did keep one of the vents open, on the side that faces against the wind. I guess I’m not sure how resilient / smart they are, if I could let them out for a little bit unsupervised and they’ll stay close to their coop if it’s too cold or they’re uncomfortable.
I was emptying poopy water four or five times a day and worrying about the birds getting sick. The metal rod in the coop roof can’t really support a 5 gallon bucket, so I 3-D printed a bottle cap with the proper threaded hole for some watering nipples someone gave me.
I also printed a ring to tie off the paracord I used for the macramé holder. The turkens figured it out in about five seconds. I’m making a few more just to make clean water easier to get to.
Climbing everything just to look for treats
I live in Ohio, and have 7 hens who are producing 7 eggs a day (knock on wood) I currently feed DuMor, but am thinking about switching to Kalmbach. I've read the Henhouse reserve is great, and also the 17% layer feed- any thoughts??
A predator has killed 3 of my chickens and causing the other 7 to hide in the woods. This morning when I woke up, I found 4 of my hens back home and under the car port, hiding from snow, the other two, roosted back in the coop. My rooster was no where, so I assumed he was a goner. This evening when my husband got home, he saw our rooster “Cheryl crow” in our neighbors yard. I guess that was too far of a distance to realize his home was just across the creek. My husband got out of his truck and tried to catch him to bring him home. The rooster ran across the road and into the woods. By this time it was almost dark. I went to the coop to lock my chickens up for the night and only saw two in the coop. I walked around with my flashlight and found 3 perched up in a side shed. I took them one by one back to the coop for safety. I am missing one hen, she was with the other 3 earlier today. I looked all around the house and I couldn’t find her. Do you think she’s just roosting somewhere for the night and will come out at daylight? And about the rooster, do you think he will find his way home? It’s also about 30 degrees and snowing a heavy wet snow. Will he make it through the night if a predator doesn’t find him first? I’m worried about my chickens. I love them and taking care of them is something I enjoy doing. I know 3 are for sure gone, but the ones that I know are missing and alive are worrying me just knowing that they could be home safe and they’re not. They’re so close but so far away 😭
My dad raises chickens in his backyard. No incubator, no vet. Just mother nature. Yesterday two of four eggs of a hen hatched. A healthy chick and this lil dude came out. He tried really hard to pollos his momma, but just couldn't and got left behind. He won't walk, and keeps falling on its but and curling. Like of it lacks strength or something. It keeps yealling whenever a chicken comes close. I picked it up so other predators cant get to him. I dont know whats wrong. Please help.
My hen, Chyna, and sheep, Commander 🖤
My wife has been charging this much since Covid. What are you guys charging or what would you pay for eggs?
