Thankfully I got home just in time to help my little buddy out. I was ready to brawl in my crocs. Don't fuck with my chickens!
I am in a coyote infested area and there is nothing I can do about that.
I have super fortified my coop and run.
But last night Oreo my favorite hen apparently stuck her head through the chainlink gate and got her head bitten off.
By the time I heard the ruckus and got out there it was too late.
I don’t understand at all. It’s a large run, 20x20ft. And has roosts and a coop in it. It’s not like they were cornered.
The chickens do love to stick there little heads thought and pec at the grasses outside the coop.
But I can’t fathom why she did this at 10pm when she should have been roosting.
How can a coyote convince a chicken to come get food?
I’m upset.
We have three hens and two roosters in a 10x10 ft run with a coop in it. They got along fine until today, when I found one had blood all over his face. When I let them out to free range the other one started chasing him around. Are they going to fight to the death now? Is keeping two roosters just hopeless?
They're singing me the song of their people.
I figured I’d share my newest water system to give some ideas. This is my 3rd system I’ve tried with a large water reservoir. The first was a small water trough with pex tubing and a float, the second was a pvc manifold with the little drinking cups. Both of them had similar problems. For one they both got very dirty, but the biggest problem is winter. I live in an area that lows can easily reach -30/-40 without wind chill. The past few winters during the extreme cold I had to use heat lamps and a 7 gallon standard chicken waterer with a heat pan and wrapped in an old blanket. I hope the metal pipe with heat tape paired with a stock tank heater internally will be enough to avoid freeze up this year.
I'm guessing this is a real good sign ? I've never had a chicken before and he just kinda came into my life unexpectedly as a baby so he's my pet and his name is Kitty
Hey everyone,
I am new to chickens, I picked up my chickens last weekend and they have slowly been dying off. I believe they have a respiratory infection. I have been isolating the sick chickens and giving them water through a syringe with electrolytes but they don’t seem to be getting any better. Any insight on what I can do for these guys? I feel very defeated. Thank you
Hello! I'm going to try to keep this... Short-ish. A lady I know that feeds cat colonies around our small town (SE US) sent me a picture two days ago of a rooster asking if I wanted him. She said he just showed up at one of the colonies (next to a grocery store) the day prior and hadn't left. We went around the near y neighborhoods asking people if they knew who he belonged to and everyone said no, but all said they first saw him the same day my friend did. I went out there to assess his temperament and get a good look at him. He appears fully grown, at least a year old. The tip of his beak is flat like he's been eating off concrete or rocks, or maybe even someone dremeled it. His spurs are short (about 1 inch) but there are two small, spur-like barbs coming up from their base. Does that mean someone previously cut his spurs off and they grew back weird? I know spurs eventually grow bone in them but they start as mostly soft tissue (like a dog nail with a quick). He hasn't crowed once. Not once. Hasn't made any aggressive movements or sounds. I caught him the next day (yesterday) and he still hasn't shown any sign of aggression or fear. I'm sitting in a chair outside his isolation coop right now and he just plopped down and appears to be trying to take a nap! My biggest concern with him is this odd, occasional head movement. He tilts his head way back and wiggles his head/neck back and forth a couple times. I've seen him stretch his neck up and open his mouth wide ONCE. It's not frequent. I've seen him do it only three times today, and once yesterday. Mostly after he has had his neck curled down preening on his chest. Hopefully it will let me upload the pictures/videos. I managed to catch him doing it on video. I'm wondering maybe gapeworm? But I'm worried about serious illnesses like Marek's.
I have 4 Rhode Island Red chickens and I am looking into getting a rooster to grow my flock. What kind of rooster should I get and what should I know about getting a rooster for my girls. My chickens are 1.5 years old now. My friend has a Orpington rooster should I just bring him over for a week and then give him back or is it worth getting my own.
What's wrong with my chick? Could this be wry neck or something else? The chick was active until this afternoon, but suddenly lost balance and is now like this.
Caught my neighbors dog killing my chickens. They were in their fenced off run with the coop. idk how he got in. He killed my Americana and my Barred rock from my first flock. He got away nd now they have him inside. I did yell I was gonna off the dog if I saw him in my yard again. What should I do. I’m mad my two hens are gone wich gave us eggs every day.
Our Wyandottes are 1.5yrs old and have stopped laying eggs this summer. One was broody in July and they’ve all finished molting at the begging of October. Their snacks are mealworms, black oil sunflower seeds and fruit. We’ve added oyster shells to their laying feed, hell we even added cayenne pepper at one point. They free range all over and have access to water everywhere. Please help with suggestions. I’m hoping I won’t be looking for chicken pot pie recipes soon.
I noticed my silkie has lice, she’s in a decent size flock; so would this kill the lice? How would I use this on her and everyone else? Anything else you recommend?
This is Hei Hei, my first ever chicken, he randomly showed up at our house in May and never left. He quickly became my best friend and with the weather cooling down I’m worried about how to keep him safe. He has a hut under the balcony filled with bedding but he doesn’t really go in there. At night he likes to sleep on our balcony railing right by the door and I think it’s cause he’s safer up there (there’s a lot of stray cats in my neighborhood) but I wanna get him a nesting box for that spot so he can be comfy.
Is there any advice for the winter or just in general? Thank you in advance 🥰
