Thoughts on this arrow and blood? Walked out and waiting to go back this evening. Shot felt good didn’t think it was too far back. Possibly center mass but not much higher.
I'm gonna grab a new bow this offseason or whenever I get time to head to my local archery shop.
I went from a Hoyt Powermax (first bow), to a Bowtech Reign 6 (held for 5 years), and now a Mathews Phase 4 29 (2 years in). I have killed deer with the Phase 4, however I shot better overall with the Reign 6 which was over 32' ATA. The Phase 4 is just very sensitive to the slightest torqueing and string pressure, along with a very shallow valley, so it's jumpy. I've just never achieved great consistency with it. I'm either shooting lights out or trying to determine if I need to adjust something.
Having owned a few different bows now, I've come to realize what is most important to me in a bow. Forgiveness, stable platform to calm pin float, smooth draw, and a wide valley, the kind where you have to push the string forward to let down. I want it locked in at full draw.
I'm a WI whitetail hunter and the longest shot I would make is maybe 35 yards, and the majority of my shots are 20 yards and under. I do also shoot 3D. At this point I would sacrifice speed for a bow that I shoot better. I shoot 65 pounds at 27.5" draw, my total arrow weight is around 410 grains.
Looking for people's first hand feedback on the following bows to see if I can weed any of them out right off the bat, then focus on shooting the ones that meet my criteria the closest. I understand all bows feel different to everyone.
-Hoyt Alpha X both 30 and 33
-Hoyt RX8 both the regular and ultra
-PSE Mach 30, might see if my shop has any of the new Mach 33s as well
-Bowtech SS34
Starting my rutcation today, off until Veterans Day. Looking forward to enjoying the woods and hopefully I can get an opportunity to shoot a mature buck. Almost made it happen Monday morning but never gave me a clear shot. First year using a saddle, so far I really like the ability to swing around the tree and using it as cover. I do find myself fidgeting a bit but with time I should get better. Good luck to everyone out there!
Was sitting last night and this guy came out. Didn’t see a spec of brown otherwise he’d be going in my freezer!
Today I had the opportunity to squeeze one off on this mature buck. 25 yd shot, pass through. After seeing the arrow land, I felt good about the shot. I gave the buck a hour & got down to inspect arrow. All good signs & picked up blood trail where the buck enters tree-line. Long story short - I followed the not very impressive blood trail for 300 yds and ultimately blood started to dwindle. I marked last blood & decided to come back with help tomorrow. I cant wrap my head around how this wasn’t a no brainer. Too low? Too far back? Brisket? Liver? One lung? Im at a loss. Would appreciate y’all’s opinion & feedback. A bummer I couldn’t make the recovery today.
This year has been my worst hunting season so far, at least in terms of ability to get into the woods. I've only been out 2 days so far, had a 3rd get blown up by terrible weather conditions. It's been all work and family commitments since the start of September and now that life is slowing down the orange army is just about to decend upon us.
I'm supposed to head out mid day tomorrow through Sunday to hit some public land but I'm waiting on a weather report from a local. They just got a bunch of snow today on top of ground that hasn't frozen yet so I'm a bit worried about the condition of the forest roads I need to drive for access. They are rough even in good conditions and with a bunch of rain and then snow they are likely going to be a muddy mess if I try to drive in there. Not driving in turns my half mile walk into a mile and a half walk which I'm considering but not really excited about.
I guess I'm just venting a bit over a very frustrating season. I hope everyone else is having the season they have hoped for.
Do you think it’s an arrow that goes by?
This is private land that I do not live on but have some trail cams up. I’ve never seen a person on the trail cam.
Hello, friends.
I'm hoping this gets the attention of someone who has made their own strings and cables or installs strings.
I recently purchased a used bow (Bowtech Carbon Knight -binary), but the string set came uninstalled and looked unraveled. (Already called Bowtech)
If someone knows at the very least what is the minimum amount of twists and in what direction to twist.
I would appreciate it greatly. Want to get out to the range asap.
Thank you
Hello all. A few buddies and myself got drawn for the Kansas Bow Hunt. We will be hunting Unit 11 and 12. If you read this and you live or hunt in the area or have been there in the past would be so kind and give some tips or offer some advice for our first trip to Kansas. We are all veteran hunters. Just haven’t ever been to Kansas. Any help or info will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
I shot a doe this morning at like 28 yards, and I'm still riding so high off it. I've shot a doe in the past which I lost, and it really sucked. I felt terrible, and actually stopped bow hunting for a few years partially because of it. I was a below average archer and just really struggled with consistency, especially past 25 yards. I'd practice but I just... Wasn't good.
Today I made almost a perfect shot. Clipped the heart and got both lungs. In the off-season I did a ton of work, got fitted and tuned and took a lesson. But I think the biggest single contributor was switching from a trigger style to a thumb button. I like the anchor more, feel more consistent, and am just way smoother and calmer on the release.
So there's my rant, I'm just so stoked and happy with seeing all the hard work pay off. If you feel like you get target panic, check out a button. It didn't instantly fix me but it definitely gave me the tools to get to a way higher level
Caught a nice tall 8 on camera last night. He walks in front of me @39 yards, won’t turn broadside. I take a shot and I freaking wiffed. Father in law always says you get 2 shot on a good buck per year. I’m at 50%…..
Last night I hit a buck with my compound bow at 45 yards. Thought I hit him a touch high and a little far back, He ran about 5 yards and then looked around and seemed unfazed and kept walking and I thought I heard him going through some thick brush or laying down. Because I thought I hit him back a bit I picked up my arrow which was buried a little bit in the leaves, probably 6 inches of it visible and got out of there so I wouldn't bump him. There was a small amount of blood on one fletching, a little bit of grease in a few spots on the arrow, the broad head had white hair which makes me think I didn't see where I hit him correctly and the broad head smelt meaty and not like a gut shot. I went back to look this morning and found a pile of white hair where he was standing where I shot him. It rained last night so I couldn't find any blood, I did a decent search of the area of where I thought he went but didn't find anything. any advice or help is greatly appreciated. Photos below
Good morning!
Looking to buy my first actually new bow ever...currently shooting a 2007 black ice that was "new to me" in 2014. The bow is awesome and great and such but I shot my dad's solution SS and can't get over how buttery smooth it is.
Finally being at a point in my life where I can afford a brand new bow I decided I'd like to upgrade before next season...the current front runners are the carbon ss and ss34
Either way I want the ss for smoothness
I'm hung up on bowtech's stupid idea of the centermass sight mount on current models.
I haven't shot either, but I will be goin to lancaster archery in the next couple weeks. I plan on checking them out them. Along with possibly checking out some hoyt or Matthew's bows.
Anyone with a core ss or the ss34 have any thoughts?
Does anyone have any idea about the shipping time from Lancaster?
I’ve been having some arrow flight issues where some fly true and others fly funky like shooting an arrow with no fletching. What could be the cause? Bent arrow shaft, messed up fletching, or something else? The arrows I was shooting were real tree edge. I’m going to purchase some other arrows and test those out to see if it was my shaft. Thanks in advance
Going out for black bear now that I’ve tagged out on deer. Do I need to make any changes to broadhead? I used a 100 grain Muzzy Trocar 3-blade broadhead for deer. New to bear hunting with a bow.
I put a bad (gut) shot on a great buck about 3 weeks ago and tracked him to a rivers edge. The property he likely crossed into wasn’t too friendly so I lost all hope. Long story short my buddy recovered him today!! Not quite how I planned it out but I’m very relieved I didn’t simply injure a deer.
Has anyone ever done a Euro mount with a nasty situation like this? I’ve heard the skull can be discolored etc. Any tips are appreciated!!
Ok, so over the past month I have been tracking this deer and working on narrowing down his home range. With in this week alone (4 sits), I have seen him twice in two separate locations that are about a mile apart. Every time I see him though is after I walk out of the woods and he is close enough to my entry and exit point to where I can get a pic of him with my phone.
I know he is bedding in the marsh grass and traveling along the edge of the marsh. Does anyone have tips or tricks to close in on him?
I just got access to this 10 acre property. Owner says they’ve seen deer. I haven’t actually checked It out yet. I’m going Friday. I need advice on placing cameras, feeder and possible stand locations. The two houses are unused and have been for a few years.
My thoughts: there’s a large track of timber north and east side of this property that is private. I’m betting most of the deer are in that large timber and work down these small creeks as they travel.
Any suggestions from experienced hunters is welcome. It took my 4 years of hard work to get my first deer. I’m trying to cut my teeth more than that.
Middle of Missouri and it’s been 80-90 degrees since the bow hunting season opened in September with just a few cold snaps here and there. How are yall hunting in this heat without sweating your butts off? Is leaving scent in the woods from sweating not a thing? How are you keeping the meat from spoiling when you can’t hang it for a day or two? Am I just not obsessed enough with deer hunting?
Which is better? They are very close in price and can’t decide. I hunt with bow and rifle and nothing over 400 yards. Just need some advice.
Temperatures are going to be dropping 20° on Friday, planning to spend the day hunting -- where would you set up?
