Translation

Hello everyone!

I have no knowledge of the Basque language but I tested different translation methods from French to Basque on a page from the novel Dune. What do you think of them? Which ones are the best? Are they all bad? Which make the most sense/are the easiest to understand? I don't need it to be perfect, but I just want to know if some translation tools are better than others in this context :)

Thanks!

Egunetik aurreko astean, Arrakisera joateko aurretik, prestatuak hasten ziren, eta hainbeste presa hasi zen, ezen ez zen itxaroko, Paulen amaren etxean zahartzun bat etorri zen. Hitz ala, gau garaia zen. Caladaneko Castel zaharraren harresiak, Atréideen 26 generazioak babestu zituenak, hodeiaren freskotasunaren seinalea ziren, denboraren aldaketa bat adierazten zuena. Zahartzunak atsekanezko atea ireki zuten eta Paulen gelaera eraman zuten, galeria baten bidez. Bost segundo batez, Paulen ilaran ikusi zuen. Ez zegoen lo; suspentsio-lamparen argi txikiaren bidez, oso zaila zegoen siluetaren eta haren amaren, atzean bakar bat hartzen zuenaren artean. Zahartzunak sorginaren itxura zuen; arnaisten toilak bere aurpegietan bildu ziren; begiak, bi harri beroak ziren. « Ez da oso gaztea bere adina, Jessica ? » Ahotsa, baliseta desentzunaren soinuaren antzera zibilotzen zen, eta Paulen amaren kontaltoaren ahotsa erantzun zuen : « Atréideen artean, hazkuntza berandu egiten da, Zure Aitorpenaren. »

Llama 3 – 70B

Arrakiserako abiatu aurretik, aste batean, azken prestakuntzen frenesia ia jasanezina bihurtu zenean, emakume zahar bat joan zen Paul gaztearen amaren bisitatzera. Gau lasai bat zen. Caladaneko Gaztelaren harri zaharrak, Atréidesen 26 belaunaldiak babestu zituztenak, hezetasun fresko eta heze batez ziren bustitzen, beti aldaketa bat iragartzen zuena. Emakume zaharra sarrera sekretu batetik sartu zen eta Paulen logelara eraman zuten ganga-igogailuaren bidez. Momentu batez, ohean zegoen ikusteko ahal izan zuen. Ez zegoen lo; linternaren argi ahulean, lurrean flotatzen zuena, zailtasun handiz bereizten zuen silueta astun hori eta bere amaren silueta, atzetik urrats bat. Emakume zaharra sorginaren itzala zen; ilea arantzaren sareak ziren, aurpegian bildutako ezaugarri ilunak; begiak, bi harri suharri ziren. « Ez da txikiegia bere adinarentzat, Jessica? » Ahotsek siflaitzen eta bibrazionatzen zuen, txalaparta desafinatu baten moduan. Eta Paulen amaren kontralto goxoaren ahotsak erantzun zuen: « Atréidesen artean, hazkuntza berandu izaten da, Erreberentzia ».

Arrakisera irten aurreko astean, azken prestaketen zoramena ia jasangaitza izatera iritsi zenean, atso bat etorri zen mutilaren amari, Paul, bisitatzera. Gau gozoa zen. Atreidesen hogeita sei belaunaldi babestu zituen Castel Caladan-eko antzinako harriek freskotasun heze horrek beti eguraldi aldaketa iragartzen zuen. Emakume zaharra ezkutuko ate batetik sartu eta Paulen gelara eraman zuten arkutik. Une batez, bere ohean begiratu zion. Ez zegoen lorik; lurretik hurbil zebilen eteteko lanpararen argi apalean, ozta-ozta bereizten zituen atarian geldirik zegoen silueta astun hura eta bere amarena, urrats bat atzerago. Atsoa sorgin baten itzala bezalakoa zen; ilea bere ezaugarri ilunen inguruan nahasten ziren amaraunez egina zegoen; bere begiak suzko bi harri bezalakoak ziren. «Ez al da oso txikia bere adinerako, Jessica? » Ahotsak txistuka eta bibratu egin zuen gaizki sintonizatutako faro baten antzera. Eta Pauloren amaren kontralto-ahots gozoak erantzun zion: «Jakina da Atreideen artean haztea berandu dela, Zure Erreberentzia. »

Arrakisera abiatu aurreko astean, azken prestaketen zoramenak ia jasanezinezko maila hartu zuenean, adineko emakume bat etorri zen mutilaren ama Paveli bisita egitera. Gau gozoa izan zen. Atreiden hogeita sei belaunaldi aterpetu zituzten Castel Caladaneko harri zaharrak beti eguraldi aldaketa iragartzen zuen freskura heze hartaz blai zeuden. Emakume zaharra ate ezkutu batetik sartu eta Pavelen gelaraino eraman zuten pasabide gangatutik. Une batez ohean begira egon zitzaion. Ez zuen lorik egiten; zoruaren ondoan flotatzen zuen kriseilu suspentsatzailearen distira ahulean, ozta-ozta antzematen zituen atalasean geldirik zegoen figura astun hura eta amarena, pauso bat atzera. Atsoa sorgin baten itzala bezalakoa zen; ilea armiarma-sarez egina zuen, zeinak bere hazpegi ilunen inguruan nahasten baitziren; begiak bi harri sutsu bezalakoak zituen. "Ez al da oso txikia bere adinerako, Jessica". Ahotsa txistuka eta dardarka ari zen, baliza gaizki afinatu baten antzera. Eta Pauloren amaren kontraltozko ahots eztiak ihardetsi zuen: "Ezaguna da atreiden artean hazkuntza berantiarra dela, Berorren Erreberentzia".

Euskal Herriko armarriak

Eguerdi on:

what you say after someone sneezes?

Hi,
I was looking for alternatives to "god bless you" when someone sneezes and since I have Basque ancestry I wanted to see what they would say (if anything) Wikipedia says that it is this:

saying: Ehun urtez! Jainkoak lagun! "For a hundred years!" "May God help you!"

response: Eta zu kondatzaile "And you there to narrate"

Is this correct and if so what is the pronunciation? I am so fascinated by this language and it is so intimidating at the same time.

Thank you for any assistance!

What was everyday life like in the Basque Country during the conflict?

I grew up in Belfast, fortunately after most of the violence was over. However anybody even a couple years older than me has vivid memories of that time. Little bits of everyday life became normal to those living there such as:

  • Soldiers patrolling the streets in armoured vehicles and manning checkpoints
  • Having bags searched before entering shops
  • The near constant hum of helicopters flying overhead
  • Kids throwing stones and bottles at the police or each other to kill boredom
  • Watchtowers, walls, fortified police stations
  • Hearing a thud or shooting in the distance and thinking nothing of it other than a wish nobody was seriously hurt

And this of course was routine, daily reality for people. For those who can remember: does this sound like life in the Basque Cluntry back then also? How did normal society function around such abnormal times?

Thank you for replies in advance

Questionnaire for Master's Program Research Methods Course

Greetings from Hungary!

I'm an American currently enrolled in the Master's of International Relations program at the University of Szeged in Hungary. As part of a research methods course, I'm required to conduct a questionnaire. I've chosen to research the complex issues and sentiment surrounding cultural nations, and specifically the Basque Nation and desire for independence. Coming from the United States, this is a very interesting topic for me because we do not have the same numerous, distinct, historical cultures, each with their own deep history, such as in Europe. Additionally, I think the advent of the European Union presents new ways of understanding concepts such as citizenship and sovereignty. As for why I decided to focus on the Basque Nation, the unique language, history, culture, and situation of the Basque people greatly appeal to me and I would like a chance to learn and understand more about the people, history, and current situation. If it weren't for my current struggles learning Hungarian, I would very much like to learn Basque, and will hopefully get the opportunity to do so sometime down the road. In the meantime, I hope to at least visit during this upcoming summer break.

Thank you for your time, understanding, and assistance!

To conclude, I would greatly appreciate your assistance with completing the linked questionnaire, which shouldn't take more than 10 - 15 minutes and comprises only multiple choice and multiple selection questions:

Nightlife recommendations in Bilbao and San Sebastian

Hello everyone. A group of friends and I will be travelling to Bilbao and San Sebastian soon and are on the hunt for great bars to visit. Does anyone have any recommendations for bars or nightclubs with:

- An archetypal Bilbao / San Sebastian vibe

- Somewhere that plays rock music

- Somewhere that plays hip hop music

- Great beers

All suggestions are welcome. We're in our late thirties / early forties if that helps.

Biarritz vs. San Sebastián

Hello!

I have 8 nights in Basque Country and wanted to split them between Biarritz and San Sebastián and do day trips (like to Bilbao for a day on SS leg)

I’m thinking 6 SS and 2 Biarritz.. but maybe 5 and 3 would be better? Would love any thoughts.

Our plan is to really tour around and eat, that’s the main activity for us. Less interested in other touristic activities honestly even though I’m sure there are tons.

Also, would love to hear about Semana Grande if anyone can share. We’re supposed to be there around that time!

Thank you all!

San Sebastian to Astigarraga

What would be the quickest and cheapest way to get to Astigarraga from San Sebastián? If there’s a bus, how often does it run and how late?

While we are at it, I would love recommendations for cider houses in the region, particularly the ones with the best food and cider. Really don’t mind if we need to eat standing up or if the service isn’t the fastest. Really looking for the best experience overall. Cheers!

Food Recommendations San Sebastián (Looking for local recs )

Hey all,

I’ve been across so many sites and reddit threads, and they all seem to recommend the same 6-8 places for pinchos in San Sebastián (Bar Sport, La vina, etc.).

I’m looking forward to trying those of course, but I’d love to hear if there any more spots that locals recommend. Maybe lesser discussed? Or are those just the best of the best?

Thank you!

Definition of maitemindu

Hi everyone! I am writing a paper where I need some examples of dictionary definitions for what in English is “being in love”. I have read the term maitemindu as translated to the Spanish “enamorado”. Is it correct that I could write “In Basque, the term maitemindu is used for ‘person in love’”? And what would be the dictionary definition? I have been trying the DLVA but I don’t know how to use it to achieve a definition and not just the word in use. Thanks in advance for the patience :)

PS I am doing this because international academia is focused highly on English terms, and I always include other languages, but on this one I only have examples from mainstream languages like Spanish or French.
