Food items, souvenirs, kitchenware etc. Any inspiration would be appreciated. (I’m specifically going to Bilbao and San Sebastián so If you have any shop recommendations for around there, that’d be great!)
I've seen it mentioned in legends as a "Basque Evil Genius" but I can't find what it is exactly, it's supposed to be more or less an Amphipteran-type winged snake, right?
This is for a school project not trying to start any arguments but I got assigned basque and why it should be free from Spain and can’t find anything can anyone help?
Buenas!
The chorus is entirely in Basque - Ez Zaude hemen orain means 'you're not here now'. If anyone is interested in a translation of the full lyrics, lmk in the comments!
Kaixo.
Since I (used to) follow sport I couldnt help but notice relative and unusual popularity of slavic name Igor in Basque country which seems pretty random and to an outsider like me it is hard to grasp the cause of it, especially since Basques are normally less inclined to use international names then other people. As I understand 'Igor' kind of has the meaning of its own in Euskara which would mean 'to send' and it could be understood as 'messenger' , but I am only guessing and I would like to hear from Basques on why name Igor is in use.
Kaixo! Buruan sartuta dut El Diario Vasco-k Francisco Francoren omenezko eskela (hil-mezua) argitaratu ohi zuela oraintsura arte. Ba al du inork informaziorik? Ez dakit egia den, egia oinarri duen, ala asmakizun hutsa den. Eskerrik asko!
Where to stay? 2 people, 3 nights, with car.
We plan to day trip around the area, so any recommendations welcome.
Hey guys I just posted this same post to another forum, but as I’m pretty ignorant to the topic I was hoping I could post here and see if I could get any help as well.
I’m from California. A couple years back my dad brought up our families origin and culture dating back to Spain.
Does the name Orona mean anything in the area? My dad had said something about a city, but I haven’t seen anything other than what’s online.
What’s the level of spirituality at in the provinces like now adays?
Hi, I am planning a 3 or 4 day road cycling holiday in the Basque Country with a couple of friends next year, and am trying to choose between Mundaka or Lekeitio as a base (we will stay in one place the whole time). We will fly into Bilbao and hopefully won't rent a car. We will probably want to cycle around 60-70km per day.
Mundaka would be easier to get to, it's on the train line in case we want to go into Bilbao during our stay, and it seems to have more accommodation options. But I am a bit worried would be more limited for cycle routes, unless we spend a lot of time on the road between Mundaka and Gernika to access the east part of Urdaibai reserve.
Lekeitio is harder to get to and has more limited accommodation options, but maybe better cycling routes?
Any thoughts on choosing between the two would be welcome!
Hi, We just returned from a 10 day trip to Basque Country. We were there mostly retracing our family as my Grandfather was from there. We loved the country, loved the food, and mostly loved the people we met along the way. We stayed in Donastia, Lekeitio, and Bilbao. We also stayed in my Grandfathers home that he left when he was 3 near the town of Ea. I liked the country and experience so much I want to take more of my family back there.
However, we noticed a lot of posters and graffiti throughout the country and no small amount seemed to be aimed at tourists/tourism and particular the Guggenheim. Interestingly we saw anti-Guggenheim posters throughout the country except for in Bilbao. My wife even took picture of graffiti that said in English and in Spanish “tourists go home” or something like that.
Finally, in our last day in the country we were in Plentzia and looking for a place to eat. The first bar we stopped in asked us to not stay because we didn’t have reservations. Since the bar was mostly open that seemed a bit more like they just didn’t want tourist in there.
Is this common? Have others notices this? How prevalent in that attitude?
Hello!
I have the option to do a Erasmus, one of the destinations I can choose is Arrasate. I researched a bit and found that the town is quite small & the university seems quite far from any bigger cities.
I’m really looking for a cultural exchange, meeting new people, traveling around the area during etc.
My question is, would there be a lot of other students to socialize with? Is it a small university? Is it an interesting place? Is there lots of stuff to do? Do people speak English often (as I dont speak any Spanish)?
I’m a bit sceptical since it seems such a small place, I don’t want to make the wrong choice and be stuck somewhere by myself for half a year. On the other hand I would love to explore the Basque culture, see the nature, learn a bit of the language etc.
Feel free to share if anyone has any experience with studying there? Any pros/cons about going to Arrasate?
Thanks :)
Hi everyone! / Bonjour tout le monde !
I’m currently visiting my sister, who’s walking the Camino de Santiago. We’re staying in Espelette, and she’s really hoping to do some horseback riding while I’m here. She’s an experienced rider, but we’ve already been turned down by a couple of stables, as most people seem to be at a jumping competition at Centre Equestre Sainte.
We’re thinking of checking it out, but I wanted to see if anyone here might have connections or suggestions for other places nearby where she could ride. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks so much!
Merci beaucoup !
Hi guys, I'll be moving to Arrasate in january to study at the Mondragon University as an exchange student. I've been trying to find some rooms to rent or apartment to share at idealist and apps like that but I haven't received any answers. Does anyone know other way I can find a place to reside, such as another plataform or a contact, or even people in the same situation as I am (like a group of students or something)? I'll arrive in january 1st and leave in june, so I'll be there for almost 6 months.

My wife and I are meeting up with a bunch of family next week. We are starting a Basque Country trip in Donastia. The rest will arrive hours before us but we arrive kind of late on Sunday at the Bilbao airport.
What is the best way to get from BIO to Donastia after 7 on a Sunday. We will be close to being able to catch the bus that runs straight from the airport to Donastia but if we miss it, it seems our choices are few.
Please help.
Hello! I see Carnival/Burial of the Sardine falls in early March 2025. What stays open during the festivities, namely in San Sebastián? I'm concerned it may be similar to Mardi Gras/Carnival elsewhere and most places will be closed to recognize the holiday and Ash Wednesday the following day.
Hola! Me and 3 of my friends are comming to explore basque country in June 2025 🗓️ We really want to rent a camper since we see this as the best option to see as much as possible. I would love to ask this community for any recommendations on where to rent a camper near Bilbao airport 🛫 for 4️⃣ adults? Are there any restrictions or any other information one must know before traveling in basque country with a camper? Would love to hear from people who has actually rented or heard some good about some rent places🌞🌞 Thank you! Gracias! I am able to find camper rents online, but some look suspicious because of cheap very cheap rents (afraid it’s a scam) others are normal price but ask for extra money for bed linnen and other extras.
Hello I plan on visiting the Basque coastline using San Sebastian and Biarritz my bookends. Which town do you think I should use as home base? I'll be traveling alone;I don't plan to go out much at night. I understand that SS can be rainy but then Biarritz can be quite expensive. Any recommendations? Also, what is a good neighborhood in San Sebastian? I don't want to be in the Times Square of it all but I also don't want to be too far afield. I suppose the same question for Biarritz but this isn't the right forum for that. Thanks everyone!
