Volunteers needed for the upcoming Street Census

End Homelessness Winnipeg is still in need of compassionate, caring volunteers to assist in the upcoming Street Census, also known as the Point in Time Count.

There is one remaining training session at 2:30PM tomorrow.

This census is an important tool in determining not only the number of people experiencing homelessness, but to also identify the contributing causes to the homelessness crisis. We cannot begin to address these issues effectively without understanding them.

If you would like to help, please email or phone the number provided.

A Request For Fellow Indians…

I (F28) am an Indian-Canadian citizen who has resided here for 10 years now. I originally lived in Dubai, UAE, my entire life. Both my parents are 100% Indian which obviously makes me Indian as well. I am also an agnostic Hindu.

When I was growing up in the UAE, a country that never tries to hide that they are an absolute Islamic monarchy, my friends, family members & I managed to have an insane amount of fun celebrating Diwali!! I have such fond memories of Diwali from my childhood!! However, we had cops monitoring & politely managing our use of fireworks and there were laws to be followed surrounding noise disturbances on weeknights if Diwali was being celebrated on a non-weekend day.

All this to say that - I am honestly begging you all to STOP LIGHTING FIREWORKS AFTER A CERTAIN TIME. I believe the by-law is 11 PM as the cutoff for loud noises? I could be mistaken. But whatever it is, I am honestly shocked and annoyed at how so many of you think that disturbing people’s sleep into the wee hours of the night is equivalent to enjoying your freedom of observing your religious beliefs.

Nowhere in our religion does it state that in order to honour Diwali as a festival, we must disrupt entire neighbourhoods until 12, 2:30, 4 AM like morons.

It’s bad enough that people move here - not talking about visitors, I am talking about residents! - without wanting to learn the language or the Canadian culture. But then to make matters worse, you use religion as a get-out-of-jail-free card to get upset at people who are trying to just sleep? Seriously??

As if many groups of Indians haven’t already cultivated a negative image in this country. Where is that Indian pride so many of you keep talking about? Shouldn’t we display that pride with some modicum of respect for this country’s rules and culture? I would find it very disrespectful if my non-Indian Canadian friends chose to move to India and disregarded Indian culture and only kept on loudly living as per their Canadian beliefs. Sounds crazy, right? Well, that’s what you’re all doing.

Please let us try to do better next year! And if you don’t like it, please travel back to India for a few nights, celebrate all night long with your fireworks, then come back. Yes, that’s my roundabout way of saying, “if you can’t assimilate and adjust here, go back to where you’re from.”

Stop using religion as an excuse to be hooligans that cause disturbances. That’s it.

An active church recommendation?

Hi, I am a young man who just moved to Winnipeg. I'm looking for an active church and to meet more people the same age as me. I'm not a Christian yet. I have participated in some volunteer activities before, but the connection between people is too weak, and basically meet once or twice and never see each other again. I also went to church. The old people there were very kind to me, but I had a hard time finding people my age. The youngest adult is 30 years old, and the rest are underage children. Can anyone recommend any active churches or Bible study groups to me? English is not my first language, maybe I should look for the church of my nation? (e.g. Korean Church). I don't know if this is a good idea.

Interview with MPI??

Hey everyone so I just want to start off with I’m someone who has really bad anxiety so with that being said I applied to an entry level MPI position and I did the assessment but kind of f’d up the typing portion ( I got 33 WPM when I regularly average 45 WPM ). So I never got a call back and it’s been like 2 weeks since I did it!! Does anyone on here work at MPI and know how I could get into contact with someone to beg them to give me an interview because I dread my current job and it’s causing me serious mental health issues and I worked really hard to get my typing up for weeks for a better chance at this job and I really wanted it, all for an f up on my typing to possibly stop me from getting an interview. I know I’m more than qualified to do the job and am really great with people! I just am losing hope and need a real win in the job market rn as I have a 2 year old son I need to provide for in this messed up economy haha. Anyway ya again if anyone in this thread knows anyone who works there that could get me an interview or even someone I can contact to try again because I really wanted to be given a shot for once!

Thanks to anyone who has read this all the way through!

Listening to Each Other: Event happening Nov 7 in Winnipeg

Hi everybody.

If you are like me, you’ve probably had your eyes glued to the news for the past year. The group Manitoba Friends of Standing Together is hosting an event which brings together Palestinians and Jews to share their stories uninterrupted.

The winnipeg free press just did a write up of the organization.

https://www.winnipegfreepress.com/arts-and-life/life/faith/2024/11/02/local-group-standing-together-in-the-name-of-co-existence

CBC radio did an interview with one of the co founders of the organization and the head of CPAM.

Has anyone here gone out of country for medical care?

Where did you go and do you think it was worth going? Was the cost really high? Anyone here gone anywhere somewhat close like Fargo or Grand Forks?

Regarding Pizza Hut in Selkirk, I have good news and bad news…

The good news is there’s still a sit-down Pizza Hut, if you want one.

The bad news is they don’t do the lunch buffet anymore.

IndoKratom

Hey guys, was curious on trying a local kratom vendor since getting your hands on Kratom usually requires ordering out of province. The reviews of this place seem to be scarce and there seems to be some mixed reviews of this place online.

Does anyone have any experience trying them and if so, how does their product compare to other Kratom products?

Chicken Delight shrinkflation

So shrinkflation has hit Chicken Delight on McPhillips. Got a 15 piece meal last night. Pieces so small even kfc would reject them. They even cut the breasts in half and no thighs. I guess they're trying to close the location again by driving away customers.

Urgent: Seeking Witnesses to Dog Attack

Hi everyone, my friend's dog, Loki, was attacked by a larger dog on Halloween night. Loki managed to escape, but he was badly injured and required stitches. In the confusion, my friend was unable to get the information of the other dog’s owner, and he also couldn’t get contact details for some kind people who helped him with Loki afterward. We’d like to thank those individuals for their assistance—it meant a lot.

If anyone witnessed the incident or has any information, please let us know.

Details:

  • Date: October 31, around 5-5:30pm
  • Location: Near the intersection of Machray Avenue and Airlies Street
  • Description of Other Dog and Owner: A woman walking a large white dog

There were several people in the area at the time. Any information would be greatly appreciated!
