I'm trying to figure out some information on the crew and ammunition of the M15/M15A1 half-track during WW2 for the US Army.
This T/O&E from 11/17/1944 is for an AAA AW SP (Anti-Aircraft Artillery / Automatic Weapons / Self-Propelled) battery.
The M15A1 is assigned to the Automatic Weapons Squad (yellow column) and has a crew of 7 according to it and other online sources agree on the crew #.
This field manual (FM 4-159) shows the M15 seating layout:
However, the T/O&E has 3 cannoneers and the FM has 2, so one of the cannoneers was a gun pointer? Also, where is the Sergeant (Section Leader)?
Did the corporal or the sergeant take on a gunner's duty? The corporal's MOS is actually the same as the lead adjuster (Gunner), so was he in one of the seats? If so, which one would be more likely? I'm trying to find out where the "Gunner" from the T/O&E would be seated, if not in the "Gunner" position in the FM then where?
In this Wiki picture it shows the 7 crew with 2 of them looking out. The T/O&E says the driver was assigned the M1 Thompson/M3 Grease gun, but I thought it was usually the Sergeant that had it. Can't identify the ranks from the picture, but there are 7 people and a driver + 2 NCO, so one of them has to be on the gun.
Also as an aside, in the role of AAA AW SP in the European theater after D-Day, would the M15 be using HE-T M54A1 exclusively in its 37mm M1 or would they also use APC-T M59A1? I know the anti-tank guns would have switched to be Bofors or something larger by then, so was the APC-T used at all for AAA purposes then?
I am looking for help finding a WWII photo I have seen twice in my life.
It is of a group of people in a forest, and denotes the building of a new American tank. I expect the photo was taken at Fort Dix, but may be wrong. I have seen it in two versions, a bi-fold version and a tri-fold version. It is of interest to me for two reasons:
My grandfather is in the photo, because he worked on the improved turret of the tank. This version was published in one of the national photomagazines.
In the tri-fold version of the photo, there is a boy and his dog in the far right (cropped for the bi-fold version). The boy is my father.
Can anyone help?
Hi. I have being put on some pills I have to take each day. All the pill boxes are boring. I was hoping for ww2 tank based approach. Kind of take turret off take pills and put turret on. Sunday, Stug. Tuesday Tiger 1. Etc. Yes I know the Stug doesn't have a turret but that is the kind of idea. So the question is do any you know of any small tank models that might fulfill this role? Room for 3 or 4 pills in the hull and a removable turret.
Sorry probably a bit off topic but i have hopes.
Cheers
I want to build the new Tamiya 1/35 Renault R35 model and put it in a diorama with some neat French infantry in action that Tamiya makes. I love the look of the model with the tank commander sitting on the rear hatch looking over the top of the cupola. Would they have gone into action like this at all? Or would he have pretty much been buttoned up upon contact
