What Happened to Max Helm?

I was a student at UNL when the Fiji protests erupted over Max Helm’s vicious rape of a 17 year old girl. The protests went on for weeks, there were rumors he’d fled to Mexico, and then I never heard anything about it again. I can find no record of the justice system having any involvement - the only apparent results being outrage, horror, fear, disappointment, and the suspension of the Fiji fraternity on UNL’s campus. Does anyone know what happened to him or if the victim received any semblance of justice?

UNL Allies: Take 5 Minutes to Support Marriage Equality!

🏳️‍🌈 UNL Students & Alum! If you consider yourself an ALLY to the LGBTQ+ students, here’s one super simple but incredibly important thing you can do— but it needs to happen TODAY! 🏳️‍🌈

🏛️ Did you know Nebraska’s Constitution STILL defines marriage as only between a man & a woman? This outdated amendment was passed in 2000, long before our society evolved to embrace equality.

💍 Of course, this was overturned in 2015 by the Supreme Court case Obergefell v. Hodges, which legalized same-sex marriage nationwide. But Supreme Court rulings can change, and with recent political shifts, there’s concern that marriage equality could be at risk.

⚖️ GOOD NEWS: Nebraska has TWO constitutional amendment resolutions that can fix this outdated language! 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

📅 The hearing is TOMORROW (Jan 31) at 1:30 PM— but you can submit your online comment TODAY to show support!

📢 Here’s how you can help in just 5 minutes:

✅ LR5CA – Removes outdated language restricting marriage to only a man & woman. (Submit as a PROPONENT / FOR) 🔗 Submit your comment here: https://nebraskalegislature.gov/bills/view_bill.php?DocumentID=59576

✅ LR6CA – Recognizes marriages regardless of gender or race and updates language. (Submit as a PROPONENT / FOR) 🔗 Submit your comment here: https://nebraskalegislature.gov/bills/view_bill.php?DocumentID=59414

💬 Your comment can be short & sweet: 👉 “I support this amendment, please vote YES.” 💖 Or you can share a personal story about why this matters to you.

📩 IMPORTANT: After submitting, you’ll get an email. Click the link inside to verify your comment, or it won’t count!

🙌 Let’s make this reach as many people as we can. Please feel free to copy & paste and share with your networks. 💜💙💚💛🧡♥️

NSLS Chapter

I was checking my school email when I noticed that I was given an invite to join the National Society of Leader and Success, as someone that's familiar with other honor societies in the country like PTK and this campus' Phi Sigma Pi, I'm wondering how the chapter is like on this campus and if its worth joining as I've read from other posts about it having more mixed opinions

Got Accepted to PhD in CS

Hi everyone,

I recently received an offer of admission to the Ph.D. program in Computer Science at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln for Fall 2025. I have accepted the admission offer. However, the admission letter mentioned that funding decisions are communicated separately by the department, and I haven’t heard anything regarding funding yet.

It’s been three days since I received the offer, and I’m starting to feel a little anxious. For those who have been through this process, is it normal to wait a while before hearing about funding? How long does it usually take to receive information about assistantships?

Any advice or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated!

Second semester, new vibes!

Hey everyone! I’m a freshman, and this is my second semester at UNL. Last semester started off okay, but things kind of fell apart for me after the first month. I ended up struggling with social anxiety, and honestly, it was hard to put myself out there. That said, I feel like I’m in a better space now, and I really want to get out of my comfort zone this semester! I’d love to make new friends, meet new people, and actually live the college life. If anyone has tips for making friends, getting more involved, or even doing better in studies, I’m all ears!

Feel free to DM me or share your thoughts here—I’d love to hear from you!

UNL or UNARK For Landscape Architecture?

So l'm on my last year of highschool and have been looking at the landscaping career for a while now. I recently have family that moved down to Arkansas. I'm debating to either to do Arkansas and study LA there or stay here? Can someone please help me? How is the program here at University of Lincoln compared to UARK? Opportunities? Internship? Scholarship? College life? Etc....

Engineering program and Kiewit scholars

I have a son considering engineering program and he applied to the Kiewit scholars. Two questions: Can you share your experience and professional experience if you already have one as an engineer from UNL and how difficult and worth it is the Kiewit program. Thanks for your help.

Considering transferring to University of Nebraska - questions on culture, academics, spirit.

Hello, I am currently a freshman at the University of Washington in the engineering school. Honestly it has not been a great first quarter as I have been ostracized for being from Texas. I am looking to transfer to the University of Nebraska and was curious about what it is like. What's the social life like and academics and school spirit?

Raikes School or Business Honors?

Hello! My child and I will be traveling to Lincoln for interviews with both the Raikes School and Business Honors program. We have been on campus multiple times but live out of state and have no personal connections to anyone at UNL. If my child is offered a place in either program, UNL is their first choice. If anyone has advice or suggestions for the interview day or the programs in general (via a reply here or a dm) we’d appreciate it. Thank you!

Help with an old UNL pennant

Easier Masters Courses

Hi! My partner is pursuing a masters degree at UNL right now and needs 9 more credit hours to take. The other courses they are taking are pretty difficult, so they are looking for some less intense ones to balance that. Preferably courses about education, history, sociology, or anything similar, but is open! If anyone has any suggestions on courses that were a bit easier, it would be appreciated!

I Messed Up *Very Long Read*

I’m hoping that this post and the replies that follow may set an example for what NOT to do when you get to college.

The goal of this post is to receive advice, help, and encouragement for my situation.

I’d like to preface all of this by admitting that everything I’m about to say is 99% my fault entirely.

In high school, I was a model student. I was bright, creative, musically inclined, participated in things like VEX Robotics and Quiz Bowl. I served on student council and was part of NHS. I had the highest ACT score in my class, as well as a 4.0 GPA (97/100 roughly). I’m saying all of this because I want all of you incoming freshmen next year to NOT TAKE THIS COLLEGE THING LIGHTLY!!!! Being smart is not the only thing required to do well (or even okay-ish) in college.

This past semester was my first. Long story short, I failed almost everything. Here is a list of my classes and the grades that followed:

MATH106 (Calc 1): 45.52%- F

LIFE120 (Fundamentals of Biology): 58.88%- F

LIFE120L (Lab of FoB): 62.96%- D

SOFT160 (Software Engineering 1): 46.25%- F

Here is the current schedule I have for the spring semester:

CSCE155A (Computer Science 1)

GEOG155 (Physical Geography)

MATH107 (Calc 2)

MUNM287 (Hist. Of Rock and Roll)

Im pretty positive that I will have to adjust this. Does anyone have any expertise or recommendations that may help me and future students alike with how exactly I should go about fixing the schedule?

So you may be asking, “How did you F up this bad?”

Here’s what happened:

I was excited to be on my own without any parental guidance. I’m rooming with one of my best friends from high school and it has been the perfect way to live thus far. I was concerned about having a falling out due to the widespread warnings about rooming with people you know. For me, it hasn’t been a problem, but again, this guy is one of my closest friends.

For the first month or so, everything was great. I went to all of my classes, I went out and enjoyed the night life on campus, and I made so many friends. To be completely transparent, I’m not exactly the type to say no to many things, which in and of itself may be one of the reasons this all happened.

The start of my downward spiral was getting the sickest I’ve been, as far as I can remember, in my entire life. I came down with a HORRIBLE case of documented and diagnosed bronchitis. It was VERY bad and I was all but room-bound for two weeks straight. I could not take more than five consecutive breaths without coughing intensely and very painfully.

This automatically put me behind by two weeks. I truly did work very hard to get back on track, and I came pretty close to doing so. At some point, possibly gradually, I made the stupid decision to give up. Simple as that. I became lazy and bored with life. I had zero motivation to do anything other than stay up all night doing things I really shouldn’t, or gaming. This would be followed by sleeping into the late morning or early afternoon. To finish off the semester, I skipped all of my finals. I was too far gone and had no way of passing anything. Now, I’m sitting here worried about what to do. I’m scared, embarrassed, and VERY disappointed in myself. I wasted my family’s money, lost vital scholarships, and left my dignity smeared on the floor of my dorm room. As of right now, I’m at the academic version of rock bottom. I’m so lost.

Here you have the “perfect student” from high school, whom, when he is faced with freedom, definitely makes use of it, regardless of the stupidity of the choices that come from it.

If you have some advice to give, any at all, I (and future students) would very grateful. A deep thanks goes to anyone who tries to help.

Entomology at UNL

Is anyone on this reddit going to UNL for their Insect Science program? I found my freshman year of high school (currently a junior) that I really loved insects and entomology after having convinced myself my whole life I hated them. That's not really important about their program, but I live in state and their requirements are pretty low compared to other schools with an entomology program. So I suppose my questions are:

How difficult are the classes needed for the degree, and who teaches them?

Do you feel that this was a good choice of school?

Is there anything I should know before coming here?

I saw info about Learning Communities, would you recommend joining one?

Should I submit my application next year as soon as they open? (Aug 1st iirc)

Where should I look for internships, scholarships, grants, etc.?

Need some Recommendations

I am looking for someone to take my lease and from other posts I have seen, they say Facebook is the best place. But after posting on the groups, its flooded with spam and fake accounts. Or groups where admins are not accepting my post.

I am curious if anyone has been in this situation and what they have done to find somone. Thanks !

Got Accepted to UNL as an Intl

Just got my preliminary acceptance mail today. But UNL is expensive for me I might get a maximum of 15k scholarship and my costs will come down to 33k per year still. I can only go till 22k per year from my fam. Is there any other way to reduce this costs or doing part time jobs would cover em?

I don’t know what to do

I’m a freshman here at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and I don’t know what to do. I came here because I thought it would be more of a party or fun atmosphere than my in state schools back in Kansas but the fraternity I joined has gotten into deep shit since I’ve been here and I don’t know what to do. Part of me wants to stick it out and stay here and find a new one but 10 of the 12 on campus are under some sort of probation or other disciplinary standing with the university. I like it fine here but I’m scared if I transfer to Kansas State or Kansas I’ll regret it or something. What should I do?

PhD admission process

I am wondering if anyone knows what the process of admission for a phd is like , like what should happen after the online application, is there any specific interviews, does it vary from department to another or if there are common steps between departments.
Thank you.
