Laedon Castle Part 3: The Palace Tower

The grandest part of this old castle, the Palace Tower, was destroyed in the fighting here. Smashed pillars and gemstones still remain in the castle, although a lot was looted by the Orangered forces during their occupation.

This tower was originally 15 storeys tall, supported by pillars, and surrounded by large windows. It was built in the 1700s, after defence became the secondary purpose of the great castle, to house the government of Laedon. It also boasted grand ballrooms, luxury barely seen in the regions outside of Periopolis, so much so that the castle was regularly visited by the monarchy of Periople.

The tower was a huge feat of engineering in it's day. However, the introduction of cranes has changed that significantly- by day 3 workers have finished all 15 columns and floors, a process that took 6 months when the Palace Tower was originally built. The much more delicate task of installing 500 panes of glass now awaits the workers. As the panes of glass are put into place on the 5th floor, one worker accidentally pushes it to hard- the entire 1x3 metre window crashes down, sending glass flying and twisting the intricate wrought iron structure horribly.

Despite these minor setbacks, by all the windows are installed successfully, and the grand furnishings must clad the bare walls. Over 30 million Crm will go into furnishing the Palace Tower. The first 10 floors will be open to the public, and the next 4 floors will be used for the Turquoise Moors Government. The final floor will hold the Palace Tower's amazing greenhouse, a huge glass dome that contained plants from all over Chroma, including the private Royal Moors Vines, said to produce the finest wine in the world- A truly amazing structure indeed.

Laedon Castle Part 2: The Citadel

The great Laedon Citadel circled the Turquoise Moors capital for many years. However, only small sections remain, as most have been demolished or built over. The Citadel, however, is being reconstructed according to original maps of the huge network from the period where it was at it's biggest. The companies and people living in the new citadel area have been temporarily moved while the construction here goes ahead.

The first stage is the complete reconstruction of the grand and opulent walls that both guarded, and decorated Laedon for many years. Large amounts of polished granite and marble pillars have been taken to the citadel zone, while the buildings inside the citadel have mainly been pulled down, apart from a few that have been kept from the citadel's golden days. The walls cut a geometric pattern of marble and granite walls through the mostly empty land. The outside wall of the Citadel is the smallest, but hints at a taste of things to come, decorated with marble, granite and Oriental-style porcelain lions and dragons.

The second wall is taller, and significantly wider. The minarets that dot the walls are lined with ivy, both real and gold leaf. Several old castle cannons have been placed along the walls, and soon "guards", provided by the Turquoise Royals National Guard battalion will patrol here. The third and fourth walls are similar to the second wall, but they are taller and more opulent than the last. The fourth wall also doubles up as a shopfront, where several cafes, restaurants and market stalls will be placed.

Finally, the fifth citadel wall will be a bold statement of strength and riches, a shell around the castle itself. Decorated by luxurious stone and minerals, it sadly did not survive well in the Turquoise invasion, and was reduced to a hulk of it's former self, lacking all of it's decoration and riches.

Inside the citadel, there will be buildings in the styles of the periods that occupied their layer in the citadel, ranging from 1700s styles in the outer ring, to the older styles further inside. As well as that, there will be beautiful gardens designed to flower almost all year. These gardens will be open to the public, and free to use.

These walls are currently surrounded in scaffolding, as they are built from the ground in their basic limestone blocks, before being clad in polished granite, and then the rest of the decorations. Inside the wall, the roads, foundations, and garden plots have already been marked out. Sweeps of cobbles are advancing along the streets inside, and the outer ring of gardens and roads has almost been laid out. The building skeletons are springing up like the flowers that will eventually grow inside the gardens, as paving slabs and lampposts and decorative fences are put up along the sidewalks- The Laedon Citadel is already taking shape

The Laedon Castle Part One: The Foundations

The Laedon Castle ruins had stood for over seven hundred years. This was the grandest of the hundreds of castles built in this territory by local lords to protect their interests and vineyards from enemies.

The Lord of Turquoise Moors built this castle as the jewel in the crown of Laedon, then a small settlement that effectively marked the capital city. The castle also involved a wall around the settlement. This wall was expanded several times over the years, but was ultimately mostly destroyed by wars, lack of maintenance, and the demolition of large sections of wall in the industrial age of chroma.

The castle itself was mostly intact until the Orangered invasion, where a large invasion force approached. The defending garrison mined the castle, and a mixture of artillery strikes and internal explosions slowly reduced this fine castle to ruins.

However, the ruins are now being surrounded by vehicles, cranes, and scaffolding. Laedon city is being redesigned to allow the Citadel walls to be reconstructed, as the castle is being restored to it's former glory after hundreds of years being empty, and several months in slowly collapsing ruins. Most tragically, the great palace tower was brought down in a mass of glass and stone to cover the retreat from Laedon. This structure will be the focus of the rebuilding here. With large amounts of money and labour being invested in this castle, it is projected to take about a week to complete the restoration.

Turquoise Moors has a long history of castle-building. However, most of the huge castles, forts, citadels and palaces built here have been abandoned over the years. However, work has now begun on restoring Laedon Castle, and the citadel walls that surround the city's central area.

    Memories

    "Fall back! Fall back!"

    "There's too many of them!"

    "It's over!"

    "Every man for himself!"

The Periwinkle Army was in the process of being routed. Massive amounts of Orangereds had poured over the border. No one knew where they had come from, but they were millions, if not billions, of them now streaming into Turquoise. There was nothing Periwinkle could do to stop them.

Rockale walked across the grasses that had once been bathed with the blood of Periwinkles as they stood in the face of insurmountable odds. They had stood, and they had died. Every so often he'd find a reminder of that fateful day. A shell casing glinting in the moonlight. A discarded rifle buried by weeds. A tattered helmet among the rocks by a creek. All small reminders of the day Periwinkle nearly lost the war.

He continued walking. Listening to babbling of the small creek as he crossed the plank bridge the Orangereds had laid down to allow their troops to cross more easily. He saw smooth white stones jutting out of the ground. At least, he told himself they were just stones.

As he stepped onto the other bank he saw the hill where they had made their last stand. He could still see the dip in the earth where their trenchline had been. The craters where shells had detonated, now grassed over. The low stone wall that had offered some cover for the Periwinkle troops against the approaching Orangered hordes. They had fought as long as they could. But no one could have beaten an army of that size.

He didn't remember much about the end of the fight. By that time he was so exhausted his brain had shut down and his body had gone on autopilot. He could just hear the anguished cries of his men as they were overrun. He stepped between a gap in the stonewall and made his way up the hill. He seemed to remember Kershaw and Miller dragging him back while he fired at the Orangereds. Was he wounded? Had he been dragged off after refusing to leave? Maybe he was just imagining that, and he'd fled just like his terrified comrades. He didn't know. Memory can be a fickle thing.

When he reached the crest of the hill he looked out onto the rolling grasslands of the Sapphire District.

So here it is. The High Water Mark of the Orangereds. After the disaster at Turquoise the Periwinkles regrouped and went on a campaign that ended with the Siege of Oraistedearg and the surrender of the Orangereds. Here, the spot where he now stood, was the westernmost point the Orangereds reached. Their last, best shot, at winning the war. Rockdale knelt down and with his fingers traced a thin line in the dirt. He already knew the Orangereds had returned, they would come back looking for another war any day now, and it may change in the future. But for just this moment, no Orangered had come any closer to Periopolis than that line.

    Our New Motto

Our brand new motto Non gradu cadere ad. It's a Latin phrase that I thought of, and created it after the recent Orangered... situation.

The translation is "We will not drop to their level", and the literal translation is "Do not fall to the level of". You may find the motto in the sidebar here, and it's a true representation of the citizens here.

    Your governor,

    zthousand

    FELLOW PERIS, A SPEECH!

The Orangereds may cut us off from the south. The may take our capital, they may have superior numbers. BUT! WE WILL FIGHT ON THE BEACHES, IN THE CITIES, IN THE MOUNTAINS, IN THE WOODS. WE WILL FIGHT TO THE LAST MAN, THE LAST COUNTRY, THE LAST GUN, THE LAST BRICK, THE LAST SAUSAGE. BUT, THOUGH THE ORANGERED GUNS MAY THUNDER, WE WILL NEVER SURRENDER. WHY? BECAUEE IT'S BETTER DEAD THAN ORANGERED! LET THIS BATTLE SHOW THE TURNING POINT OF THE PERIWRINKLE ARMY. IF THE ORANGEREDS WILL DUMP, THEN WE WILL DUMP HARDER! (Shut up!) IF THE ORANGEREDS SHOW UP IN LARGER NUMBERS, WE WILL USE SUPERIOR TACTICS. IF EVRY SINGLE PERIWRINKLE SHOWS UP FOR BATTLE, WE CANNOT LOSE! PERIWRINKLE! WILL! NEVER! SURRENDER! That is all, gentlemen. Good luck.

    So it begins.

I hear you ask; So much death. What can mere men do against such reckless hate?

So I will say to you this- Ride out with me! Ride out and meet them. For death and glory. For Turquoise. For your people.

The Horn of Zthousand will sound in the deep, one last time!

Let this be the hour when we draw swords together. Fell deeds awake. Now for wrath, now for ruin, and the blue dawn. Forth, Periwinkle!
