Supporting local media/news

Is there a good option to support local media/news? We support WQSV, and used to have a Newsleader subscription, but Newsleader is Gannett Media, and is increasingly more and more national news than local.

Ding dong ditchers

Has anyone else been dealing with teens ding dong ditching late at night? This is the second weekend in a row that we've had some teens do this. When they come, they ring the bell repeatedly while banging on the door, run away, then come back several minutes later and do it all again several more times. Just one time on one day as a harnless prank is one thing, but multiple times in a short amount of time two weekends in a row is another entirely.

Staunton vs Williamsburg February Vacation Information

Staunton vs Williamsburg February Vacation Information

I currently have reservations in Williamsburg, but am still within the cancellation window. I originally booked this as a Romance Package, with tickets, carriage ride and meal. They contacted me and said the carriages would not be runing during February, so we removed the package, but kept the room and tickets.

Now I am getting messages that some of the restaurants will be close, along with the pool, spa, hottub and some of the artisans.

I am now thinking about cancelling Williamsburg and going to Staunton instead.

Thoughts? Suggestions? Advise?

I live in central NC, so both Williamsburg and Stauton are within 3.5 hours. Would like to keep the travel distance in that range.

Job Searching in the area

Does anyone else in the business admin or finance sector find it extremely difficult to get a decent job in the Shenandoah Valley?

I was born and raised in the Valley, I’m well educated, I’ve got over 10 years of experience in finance. Yet I’ve never had any luck finding a job here. Every position I’ve held has been in Charlottesville or remote in NOVA.

I’ve applied to countless jobs in Waynesboro, Augusta County, Harrisonburg, Staunton, Rockingham County, and even Rockbridge County. I’m at the senior level so granted those kinds of jobs don’t open up often here, but the whole thing just seems backwards. I would think given my excellent qualifications and experience derived from much larger organizations than what we have here, that I could easily pick up a job in this area. But no, I’ve applied for hundreds of them, and I always get overlooked, yet I can easily pick up a job in a metropolitan area where there’s a lot more competition.

Is it because I’m young (30), is it because I’m not blood related to anyone important around here? What is it? I don’t get it.

It’s really frustrating because im raising my family here, I take pride in the area, I support the community in numerous ways, i didn’t just grow up here and jet like most of my friends. It honestly feels like a kick in the teeth sometimes knowing that this area I contribute so much to consistently rejects me professionally.

Can we talk about these moronic trash cans?

Why the hell do we need new trash cans provided by the city? https://www.ci.staunton.va.us/Home/Components/News/News/2426/71?backlist=%2f.

This is yet another decision by the city that none of the residents are asking for, or will benefit from. Much like the city deciding to discontinue curbside recycling pickup, but maintain the same monthly charges. They encourage you to recycle, so all of your trash fits in their provided can, but that would require packing it into your car and driving it across town. Not to mention the majority of time the recycling center is open is during M-F work hours.

We moved here 15 years ago, and I just see the maintenance of city infrastructure decrease, costs go up, and empty platitudes being offered again and again. We see big announcements about "West end revitalization" with no actual plan for anything to happen, just empty ideas that can't be quantified to show success or failure. Sidewalks go unmaintained, regulations requiring snow clearing aren't enforced, streets are dark and dirty.... And yet the big concern is a new trash can so they fire actual workers and buy new expensive trucks to pick up these new cans.

Hiking conditions and other things to do?

My partner and I are spending next weekend in Staunton and we're really looking forward to it! We'd love to do some hiking but are wondering about the trail and driving conditions in Shenandoah NP, Blue Ridge Parkway (appears to be closed) and GW/Jefferson Forest. Is there too much snow to hike without special equipment?

Are there other recommended hikes we could do in the valley if there's too much snow in the mountains?

Also any other general recommendations are appreciated!

VDOT to Public – We’ll Take It from Here – Do Not Travel During High Impact Winter Storm

All travel in the Shenandoah Valley and Alleghany Highlands should be rescheduled to avoid Sunday afternoon and evening, January 5 and into the day on Monday, January 6. Virginia Department of Transportation crews and contractors will be fully engaged in snow and ice removal operations as a high impact winter storm enters the Commonwealth of Virginia. A foot of snow or more is possible in some areas with a mix of snow and ice in other parts of the state. Travel will be extremely treacherous and should not be attempted. The public is asked to avoid travel and let the crews work to keep roadways open and passable.

Travel on bare pavement should not be expected during and, for a period, after the storm as very heavy snowfall rates are predicted for several hours. Crews will continue to plow and treat roadways to make them passable.

VDOT crews and contractors will be staged late this afternoon and into the evening to begin snow removal operations as soon as the winter weather begins. They will remain active on 12-hour shifts throughout this weather event.

All interstate roads and major primary and secondary roads have been pre-treated with brine.

It is likely to take a few days to plow and treat roadways to make them passable. Temperatures for most of the week are forecasted to remain below freezing.

VDOT is responsible for snow removal on all state-maintained roads, while all cities and some towns maintain their roads, including Arlington and Henrico counties. VDOT may support cities and towns, if requested.

Snow removal priorities are as follows:

  • The Interstate Highway System and limited-access roadways are VDOT’s first priority.
  • Primary roads (routes numbered 1 to 599) and major secondary roads (routes numbered 600 and up) with vital emergency and public facilities, or those with high-traffic volumes, will be cleared along with interstate and limited-access roadways as resources allow.
  • Low-volume secondary roads and subdivision streets will be treated after higher-priority routes are completed and additional resources are available.

For road information, check 511 at its updated URL and website: https://511.vdot.virginia.gov/. The 511 site has traffic cameras, current crash locations, weather conditions and more. The public can sign-up for 511 alerts to be sent to their personal device. On the VDOT 511 website roads with snow and ice conditions will be marked minor, moderate, severe or closed. To view a text listing of weather road conditions go to https://511.vdot.virginia.gov/, look at the blue bar on the top of the page and click on “Road Reports” and then click on “Road Conditions”. Look at the pull down box that lists all jurisdictions.  In this box individual counties can be chosen to view. Apps for Virginia’s 511 system are also available for android and iOS devices.

Road condition definitions:

Closed – Road is closed to all traffic.
Severe – drifting or partially blocked road.
Moderate – snow or ice on major portions of the roadway.
Minor – bare pavement except for isolated spots of snow, ice or slush.  Driving with caution is recommended.

Another information source is the VDOT website at https://www.vdot.virginia.gov. Type in “winter weather” in the search bar located in the middle of the home page. Follow the links to the winter page for driving tips, snow removal procedures, travel kit items and additional resources.

If travel is necessary during winter weather be alert for elevated roadways such as bridges and overpasses that freeze first. The traveling public should also be alert for falling tree limbs and tree debris on roadways from heavy wet snow or ice.

The VDOT Customer Service Center can be accessed through its mobile friendly website at https://my.vdot.virginia.gov/. Agents are on site 24/7 every day of the year to assist the public. People can also call the VDOT Customer Service Center at 800-FOR- ROAD (800-367-7623).

The Staunton District X (Twitter) feed is at VaDOTStaunton. The VDOT Staunton District has a group page on Facebook. Follow VDOT statewide accounts on FacebookFlickr, and YouTube.

VDOT statewide X feeds can be found at VaDOT. The nine districts can be found at: Hampton Roads VaDOTHR; Richmond VaDOTRVA; Northern Virginia VaDOTNOVA; Fredericksburg VaDOTFred; Culpeper VaDOTCulp; Lynchburg VaDOTLynchburg; Bristol VaDOTBristol; Salem VaDOTSalem; and Staunton VaDOTStaunton.

The VDOT Staunton District serves Frederick, Shenandoah, Clarke, Warren, Page, Rockingham, Augusta, Highland, Rockbridge, Alleghany and Bath counties.

Friends for my 17 year old autistic son

Hi everyone,

I’m reaching out to see if anyone can help me connect my autistic son (17) with some new friends. He’s an amazing kid with a great sense of humor and a ton of interests. Here’s a little about him:

Music: He plays bass guitar and loves discovering new bands and songs.

Gaming: He enjoys computer games and would love to play online with others.

Movies: He’s a huge movie fan and could talk about them for hours!

Outdoors: He likes going on walks and exploring new places.

We’re located in Staunton but he’s open to online friendships too. If you know anyone who might share similar interests or if you have suggestions for communities where he could connect with others, I’d really appreciate it.

Thanks so much for reading and for any help you can offer!

Planet Fitness membership?

Just curious if anyone has experience with the local Planet Fitness & especially with cancelling memberships?

I need a place to go for a few months to help rehab my leg post surgery (I'm working with a PT, but looking for more options when I'm on my own). The YMCA and Augusta Health wellness center both require year commitments, and while they both seem like great spaces, I don't see myself using it after I finish rehab and have other ways I'd prefer to spend the $576 it will cost me for a year. But I've also heard horror stories about trying to cancel Planet Fitness. Has that piece gotten any better? or are there other options locally that might help me do what I need to do?
