Reminder that the owner of Skooma is a MAGA dude who cheered on the cops pepper spraying students on UVA Grounds

Definitely avoid this business. In case you missed it:

Fake Violin Guy again

On my way to Timberwood from my car and noticed this “violin performer.” After watching for a few seconds I noticed his fingers not moving. When I asked him to play something he kept smiling and saying “thank you.” The music kept going but not his fingers. LOL

Suggestions: Looking for functional/holistic health offices with focus on dietary approach to ADHD/PCOS/Inflammation link

I have chronic inflammation, fatigue and back pain. After a few recent diagnoses of ADHD & PCOS, I've started to want to look into functional medicine and take a bird's eye view of my conditions to see if they feed each other. I'm specifically interested in working with a nutritionist/dietitian who specializes in these conditions and the possible link between them.

I'm working with my primary care provider as well, but wanted to see what other (reputable and studied lol) resources I could get from Reddit.

If you are an MD, nutritionist, and/or any other allied health that can also provide helpful articles and literature on this topic, please post your links!

I'm 24, and I just don't think feeling this way all the time is sustainable. I want to get control of my health now before it starts getting to me (even more) when I'm older.

Thanks for the help in advance!

Best place to buy a mattress?

I'm looking to buy a new mattress soon. I'm not looking for anything crazy, maybe $1000 max for a full/queen, though I'd really prefer to keep it a good bit lower than that. Any suggestions on stores/retailers around here? Ideally I'd like to be able to feel it and test it out so I don't love the idea of ordering online.

Cville Litter Pickers 2024 Recap

First off, I want to thank all the amazing litter picking volunteers that are helping to make Charlottesville a great place to live!

2024 started with this post to r/charlottesville. Multiple Cville Redditors wanted to help out so we started a group chat. Then we eventually launched our Cville Litter Pickers Meetup Page to help organize litter picking events.

In 2024 we had 26 different volunteers that collected 267 bags! The map image in this post shows most all the routes we did.

I’m really happy that the Albemarle County’s Roadway Litter Collection Program started in Dec 2024. It uses the bag tax revenue to pay for professional litter pickers. They’ll be focusing on high traffic routes that are outside of the city limits and are not VDOT responsibility (such as N29). Here is a good article about the County’s program (and it even gave a nice shoutout to the Cville Litter Pickers).

We also made it on the local news and got to talk about our collaboration with the Cville Tool Library that loaned us some litter picking equipment!

Another 2024 accomplishment was that we were able to get the County and VDOT to work together to use the County’s street sweeper on N29. VDOT doesn’t own a street sweeper, so they have to rent one to use on their routes they’re responsible for, such as N29. The County does have a street sweeper but couldn’t sweep N29 because they don’t have a crash attenuator truck (the truck that looks like it has a scorpion tail). VDOT has a bunch of those trucks. We got the County and VDOT to talk to each other and share resources and now they’re sweeping N29 more regularly and they’re saving money and better utilizing assets!

During my time picking litter this last year, I had three major observations:

  1. There is always more trash than what you can see from the road.
  2. Litter is being generated faster than its being cleaned up.
  3. Non-paper litter never goes away. It only gets smaller and harder to pickup.

I do think that more preventative measures would help a lot. And the problem isn’t as simple as we have litter bugs. I think there is a more complex behavioral and social-economic situation happening.

Here is my high level assessment of the litter we picked up:

  1. Alcohol cans, bottles, and packaging being thrown out cars or dumped at drinking spots. I’d say 1/3rd of our litter picked was this.  I can also tell you what litterers like to drink: Twisted Tea, Bud Light, Coors, Modelo, Johny Bootlegger, Malt Liquor, and Mini Liquor Bottles are the most popular.
  2. Fast food packaging (cups, bags, boxes) being thrown out cars.  This is probably another 1/3rd of the litter we picked up. I can tell you that litterers like Chick-fil-A and gas station fountain drinks.
  3. Debris falling off of trucks. N29 has a particular problem with this.
  4. Litter from vaping and cigarette butts. We do our best to pickup the vaping litter but many times the cigarette butts are too numerous to clean. I do think the street sweeper is very helpful against the cigarette butts.
  5. Litter from unhomed which includes abandoned clothes and misc materials, alcohol and fast food litter.  Unfortunately we’ve come across used needles (qty 11 for 2024).

The County has tasked the Solid Waste Alternatives Advisory Committee with coming up with mitigation strategies. I’m hoping to speak with them soon. After speaking with the County, City, and other organizations, I this the following is an achievable wishlist for litter mitigation. We’d love your thoughts.

  1. Signs in alcohol sections of grocery stores, ABC stores, and fast food drive throughs sending the message of: “If you don’t want to be pulled over by the cops, then don’t throw your trash out your car window.”
  2. Better enforcement and strengthening of ordnances for business parking lots to be cleaned by the businesses. (I’m shocked at how bad some of the big box stores let their parking lots get. Walmart is one of the worst and the trash blows over onto N29.)
  3. Better enforcement of ensuring mowing contractors litter pick before mowing. The hardest thing ever is picking up 100s of pieces of one plastic cup.
  4. Further efforts to help our unhomed to become homed.
  5. Let us know if you have other ideas!

I was a little disappointed that a bottle and can tax was tried and failed. It failed because Virginia is a Dillion Rule State where Cville needs approval for things such as a bottle/can tax and the State government to date hasn’t been willing to allow it.

Another item that I’d like to see a solution to is more public trash bins. The concern I’ve heard is that putting out more bins require more government staff to empty them and that people abuse them by putting trash in them that would normally go in their home trash. I understand it, but I’d like to see if we can find a solution. I do think some people (not all people) will be more likely to properly dispose of their trash if it’s convenient.

For 2025, the Cville Litter Pickers have a goal of 400 bags to be collected! We’ll be focusing on roads, parks, parking lots in the City and on VDOT roads that don’t get enough attention like N29.

If you’re interested to help out check out our Meetup Page that posts our events. The meetups are great to meet people and get some exercise outdoors. For me, litter picking is a nice therapy session that I feel good and accomplished. We have all the equipment needed so you just have to show up!

Another item we’d like your help on is we’re looking for local businesses that wouldn’t mind if we disposed our bags in their dumpsters. I’m working with the City and County to get a bag pickup/ or volunteer dumpsters setup for us. But it takes time and it would be great if some gracious local businesses would be willing to be backups if we need them. Please DM if you’d be interested or if you have suggestions.

Thanks!

TL;DR
The Cville Litter Pickers did 267 bags in 2024 and looking to do 400 bags this year!
If you’re interested want to help, check out the Meetup Page.
We’re looking for local businesses that would be willing to let us dispose of our bags in their dumpsters. DM me. Thanks!

Demon Corgi on Pantops

There is a little demon corgi that gets walked on South Pantops drive. It barks incessantly and lunges at passing cars. I can hear its yap from my bedroom (at least 100yards away). I am a total dog lover, but I have grown to loathe this pup. The owner doesn’t seem bothered by its behavior. I have seen them around for the past 2+ years.

If you know this dog, can you please tell me that it possesses some redeeming quality?!

Or at least tell me the dog’s name—that way I can loathe it by name.
