Skagway, from the Tlingit term skagua, roughly translates to "white caps on the water" or "where the white water gathers". Neighbor to Dyea and the Chilkoot Trail, Skagway now exists primarily as a drinking town with a tourist problem, hosting over 1 million visitors each summer.
Here we can meet up, post on current events, and help some new folks come to town!

Hi all!
Anyone know a guy named Chris on State St.? He gave me a ride, and I'd like his address to send him a post card. He drives a Toyota.
This probably sounds weirder than it is. lol
Going to be in town this Thursday, looking to see if there are events going on, like music or anything else! Probably going to hike and bike during the day, looking for something in the evening. Thanks in advance!
Where is the best place for a midday hookup? Just need a room for a few hours
Howdy all...my mom and I will be visiting on HAL trip in mid Sept. But since she has a bad knee, we'd like to take a cab/uber to any nice photo spots less than an hour away. We are planning to do a museum tour at noon. Does that sound feasible? Should I try to find a tour operator to setup a reservation or are there options for cabs/ubers once we arrive at the dock?
I live in Vancouver but have urgent business in Skagway. What is the cheapest way to get here? Plane or Car?
Hi Skagway! My family and I enjoyed a wonderful Yukon tour, shopping, beers and king crab, and my wife and I enjoyed some delicious edibles. Somewhere on the way back to the ship I left our GoPro, I think it was on a trash can or possibly in the shop that had the handmade whale stuffies. It’s a cube shaped simple model with no screen. I don’t care about the camera, I wish it well on its journey, but if anyone spots it I would LOVE to have the memory card. If any of you lovely people stumble across it it is a Hero model and it’s called DaveGrohlJr if you have the GoPro app. Either way thanks for the hospitality!
Hi there. I work at the American Bald Eagle Foundation in Haines and we have an acoustic recorder deployed about 20 minutes out of town along the Klondike Hwy. Looking to rent a car with an intern for a couple of hours tomorrow so we can go pick up the data. This would be from approx 10am-12pm since we get in on the fast ferry at 10. I can pay $50 or we can discuss another price. Please let me know if you’d like to help us out! Thanks.
I’m going to be in Skagway soon and was wondering if there are any Pokémon Go players in the area?
I'm in town for the week from Seattle and might want to get up to some board games. Who in this lovely town knows of board game events?
Hi All, I'll be in Skagway in July via cruise and looking for advice on taking two boys (10 and 12) fishing on our own. I'm an okay angler in Virginia (mostly large mouth bass) so not a total newbie. May bring a couple of small spinning rods with us. I hear Dewey Creek is decent? Any other suggestions for catch and release salmon or trout, walkable from cruise port?
We're in Skagway today, and booked the 40 mile train ride at the last second. We'll be back next Tuesday, and had booked a car rental ($250 + $100 security deposit) for that day (mostly because we didn't think we'd be able to book a train ride). We can get all but $50 of that back if we cancel, I think. My question then, is should we still keep the car rental, and why? Klondike highway/Yukon, I know. Dyea flats?... What else? Or should we cancel the car, because there's another equally good use of that $200 ($100 each)? Or to just save the money?
My husband lost his reading glasses (non-prescription) last night and wants to replace them at our first cruise stop which is Skagway. I identified 2 possible places in Skagway for him to shop — the AC Fairway Market on State and the Ace Hardware on Broadway. Any other suggestions? Usually, any drugstore carries reading glasses.
Just got my cancelation email from Royal. My wife is super upset she was really looking forward to the train ride.
I'm scheduled to stop in Skagway on 5/23 on a cruise.
I'm seeing some talk on Facebook that folks are being told by car rentals that their reservations are being cancelled because the ships can stop. The ore dock was supposed to be replaced but the dock was damaged in transport to Skagway.
Can anyone tell me if cruise ships are stopping in Skagway?
Hello everyone! I will be going on a busy Alaskan trip this end of June into July (Cruise from Vancouver, then time in Denali, then backpacking Gates of the Arctic). I love to hike, and I’m visiting Skagway on the cruise. I know the details about the hike, however I just had a question about the logistics.
-I’m aware we need to take the train there, I already booked train tickets before realizing this trail existed. Does the train stop at the trailhead as a given or do we request it to stop?
Is it 2 hours and 13 minutes in duration both ways (there and back) or one way? I just want to see how I can manage my time before having to get back on the cruise.
How’s the bear activity? I plan on buying bear spray in Healy Alaska that I will use for hikes in Denali and GOTA NPs. I cant fly with the spray so I wasn’t sure about buying it for the cruise. What do you think?
Thanks for the help!
I’m gonna be a (surprise surprise) seasonal worker in Skagway starting in a couple days, and I was just wondering if anyone was aware of any building in Skagway that has a piano in it that would be chill to practice on? I just play/compose for fun, but I’ve been learning piano for 13 years and I don’t want to get too out of practice!
Thank you thank you!
My family and I will be in Skagway around sept 18. How’s the weather, any good helicopter glacier walking tours, and any chance of seeing the Auroras?
Hi all, im looking for active AA groups in Skagway. A friend is visiting for the upcoming season for the seasonal jobs. I'd like to help keep him sober. Any advice related to this is appreciated
The owners name is Keith, they also run DIY Jeep Tours and the Popcorn Emporium.
I was thinking of working for them as a cdl driver/guide this season.
Does anyone know the scoop on their reputation and/or the quality of housing they offer?
I know everyone knows everything in a place like this, hoping to get an inside perspective (good or bad) if possible. Couldn’t find much in terms of employee reviews online.
Thank you!
I’m about to leave to Skagway for the summer to go work and I’m going to drive there through Canada ! Is this recommended ? Cool sites ? Are the roads also well maintained ? I know like I will have to stay on top of gas and it all. But was bringing a car worth it all?
I’ll be in Skagway early July on a cruise with my family. I’ve got a 10yo and 8yo boy. In your opinion, what do we have to see or do? Thanks for the help.
I'm working in Skagway this Summer. I have been before and know a bit of what to expect, but does anyone have any tips on what things might come in handy to have clothing wise (or otherwise) for May-September? TIA.
Hello Skagway folks!
Coming to visit from Seattle, WA with my fiancé and his mom in mid- May. Looking for recommendations from a local vs. booking an excursion through the cruise line. Happy to do so but thought I would ask the locals first😊 this is my first time for all of us in Alaska and a family trip so recommendations would be greatly appreciated!!!
Gonna be working in Skagway this summer, I did see there is a dispensary but is anybody able to speak on the quality? I’m from California for reference, I usually prefer flower from friends who grow over dispensary weed but I still go to dispensaries for wax, carts, and edibles. And is it just flower at the dispensary there or is there wax? How much is an 8th? A zip? Would prefer to take dabs and edibles to reduce smell since it is a small town. And I wouldn’t be able to smoke indoors since I’ll be in shared housing. With that being said, any 420 friendly homies in Skagway?
Another question - do any of the stores in town sell vapes or cigarettes? What do the prices look like for those?
I’m thinking about working in Skagway this summer but I’m a little concerned about the weather. I’ve heard it’s usually pretty cloudy and windy. Is that true? Are there some nice sunny days as well? If you were in Skagway, did you mind this weather?
I am working in Skagway between Dec 13th and Jan 5th and I have no clue what I'm in for. I was thinking of renting a car to go on hiking trails and am debating bringing snow shoes, if not for hikes then getting around the Port of Skagway where I'll be staying and working. Is there access to trails during this time? What all is open and what is there to do in Skagway? All tips and suggestions are welcome. Also if anyone is interested I'd like to meet up with someone for a drink (I'll buy), I'll be there alone so I'm sure I'll want to socialize at some point, and I wouldn't mind picking your brain about the town. Thanks!
