Things are...not good

That was rough to watch because after the own goal I know there was no chance we'd get a result. Organization seems to be just waiting for guys to get healthy but I'm not sure even at full-strength this squad is put together properly.

I thought Flores-Blanco is a nice addition. Having an experienced wingback/fullback helped us tremendously and there is a foundation of this team that can work and contend. We're missing too many important pieces even when healthy (and some of these guys are starting to look they aren't ever going to be healthy).

We're about to lose Lambert for the next two games (Jamaica's last group game is June 30th so he should be back for the July 6th game against Phoenix) and our midfield is a disaster. Bura will probably be back for Wednesday so he can slot in but we need a true box-to-box midfielder to partner with one of our 4 CB/DM hybrids. Love Haakenson but he's not a CM and Jorge is having to do too much dirty work and it's taking away from what he does best. No idea who is available but Marcina and Ferruzi need to dip into those connections and find someone. I assume the Abu retirement surprised everyone but that can't keep being an excuse. I'd be intrigued by a Bura/Lambert midfield if they can ever be healthy and available at the same time but I'd still like on more player

We also need a predatory CF. Selling Patino was doing right by the player so I don't begrudge the Spurs for doing it but they seem to have put all their chips in to the Solignac basket as the guy to replace those goal-scoring instincts and the guy has played all of like half an hour. Agudelo works really hard and if he's a back-up I think it can work. Lacey, LaCava, Mbongue, Chol, and Haakenson (he should be an attacker) are all nice attacking options to have that can offer something different but they aren't natural goal-scorers. We have one of the best creators in USL and found success in the league by playing multiple clinical finishers in front of him and we've completely gone away from that.

Fix those two spots and get some guys healthy and I think we can still salvage a playoff spot and maybe even host a game or two but we can't wait much longer. If we don't see those moves made I think we're probably looking for a new coach at the end of the season.

International Guys

Looks like our international guys have wrapped up their national team duty and should be available this weekend (though some of the travel might mean they need a rest).

Lambert only a got a late-game sub (played all of maybe a minute) appearance in Jamaica's 1-0 win over the Dominican Republic. He didn't see any action in their 3-2 win over Dominica. Assuming he didn't miss out due to an injury he should be fresh for us. No idea why he doesn't play for Jamaica because I think they could use someone of his profile but they're all-in a youth movement as they try to recruit guys out of England, good news (for us) is it means he probably doesn't go with them to Copa America . Looks like they will qualify for the next round easily though.

Shannon started and played 75 minutes in Trinidad and Tobago's 2-2 draw with Grenada last week. Not a great result for them but they followed it up with a 7-1 win over Bahamas on Saturday. Shannon didn't play in the 2nd game so, in theory, he shouldn't be too overworked either for this weekend. T&T are probably going to finish 2nd in that group behind Costa Rica to qualify for the next round but that draw against Grenada could come back to haunt them.

Chol didn't get off the bench in South Sudan's 1-1 draw with Togo last Wednesday. He came on as a sub this morning in their 3-0 loss to Sudan. I watched a little bit of it and he didn't do a whole lot but he came on in the 54th minute when they were already 2-0 down. Losing today probably puts South Sudan too far behind to qualify for the next round as they are now 6 points behind Senegal (who will probably win the group and qualify easily) and 8 points behind Sudan who is surprisingly in first.

Bura didn't get off the bench in Guinea-Bissau's 0-0 draw against Ethiopia. He started and went the full 90 yesterday against Egypt. I watched the game on replay (you can watch CAF qualifiers on FIFA.com for free) and he looked really solid against a very good team. He picked up a yellow card in the first half but was largely in the right place Guinea-Bissau had the lead until Salah did what Salah always does. Game ended in a 1-1 draw and that is a huge point for Guinea-Bissau. They are probably fighting for 2nd with Burkina Faso and that point put them ahead of them.

SAFC 1-0 Memphis

Happy to end a hot team’s streak. Three points coming at a good time. Really a bit of a smash and grab for us considering we come away with 36% possession with 6 shots (2 on target) vs their 17 (4). Kept in this match with great goalkeeping and a few nice individual performances/efforts. For a team moving to possession style we seem quite disjointed.

I think we really do have some good players in Lambert, Haakenson, Burks we are integrating in this squad. That being said, I think we also lack personnel. Having to play Chol and Lacy both start, players who don’t offer much in possession, kills a lot of our attacks and ability to retain the ball. I still believe in Agudelo the guy works his ass off with decent retention and feet.

I was sitting behind Marcena too, he seems to be stressed, was constantly screaming at Lacy instructions. Looked like anxious over coaching.

Defense split quite a bit few times too easily some better finishing we draw this game. Silva can’t come back soon enough. I wish we had kept Dhillon the guy is the best supporting cast.

I’m giving Marcena confidence for now we’ve had some unfortunate injuries our midfield has such little depth. I was sitting behind at. 15 or 16 y/o Academy player on our bench. But also good for him!

National team call ups

6 SAFC players have been called up to their respective national teams, although its great for those players and their career, with all the current injuries we have, I wonder what we are going to do. I’m unsure when they leave for duty, but I’m hoping we have them tomorrow for the game against Memphis, we currently sit 7th but can go up to 5th by beating Memphis and if other teams ahead of us lose or tie we can go even higher.

Marcina

I was just wondering what everyone’s thoughts on Marcina are. All of my friends including myself think the same way about him but walking around the stadium after the final whistle I hear some different stuff about him. I just wanted to hear different opinions.

Where to watch away games?

I was wondering if the supporter section group gets together at any local place to watch the away games or if everyone just stays home. I have been watching the away games at The Winchester but I heard they recently changed the rules where only 18+ past 9:00 or something like that and unfortunately I fall under that category.

Post-match thoughts and ratings

Satisfying win tonight!! I thought the boys dug in and it showed what the three points meant. I’ve been wanting to bring more discussion into our subreddit and I’d like to start with my own player ratings. Definitely tell me what you’ve seen and agree/disagree. I’m by no means an expert but I’ve watched the game all of my life and am grateful for our club and have made ~90% of home matches since 2018!

Please comment/disagree id like to keep doing this. I notice we don’t seem to have as much dialogue as other subs do on Reddit for their USL teams.

Onto my thoughts!

Defense as a whole is thought earlier first half was a bit exposed Monterey running onto our last three a bit too much. We werent keeping a lot of great possession early on. We tidied up and didn’t give much as the game progressed though.

Sisniega 7: Another solid performance. His distribution isn’t Farr but I need to lose those comparisons it’s over. Commands his box. In a game where our defense gave away a many dangerous set piece early he commanded the box. Not much to do on the goal it was solid delivery and finish.

Burks 7: More and more loving his addition to our back. Tidy game. Safety.

Taintor 6: Loved to see the trademark far post from Mitch to assist on the game winner. It was a good delivery for their goal but technically Mitch did miss the header as it came in. Maybe I’m being critical. But I don’t think he’s been quite his typical imposing self but overall decent tidy game tonight.

Gomez 7:Back in the lineup. Lovely goal line clearance good concentration. I think he’s battling to show he can still start for this team. Struggled a little early with his matchup but recovered and played well. A player who really responds to the crowd backing him.

Silva: Had to finally come off with a shoulder injury. Looked sharp though hope he’s well and back soon! Been a crucial link with Jorge-Agudelo

Omar 6: Came on for Silva. Very active in the game. I couldn’t tell if he arrived first or not for his yellow but he has been loose with tackles. He’s young with great skill on the ball and the physical attributes you want for your holding mid.

Lambert 8: He’s been working hard this year awesome to see another guy get his reward. Doesn’t pull out of battles, works for the team.

Hernandez: 9 Per usual for me our maestro was absolutely electric. Knows what to do with the ball. Leads the team in energy and effort. Love our boy!!

Haakenson 6.5: Runs days for the team. Put a few good balls in. He’s definitely earned his spot to keep starting in our 11 on the right side.

Mbongue 6: If I’m not mistaken first start for the 19 y/o Toronto loanee. Touches were good up top. Had some opportunities. Was brave showing in the build-up for the team. Monterey Bay played hard in their final third so both strikers hard to work (and work they did) for all the space they got. I’d like to see him get some more starts he has the right attributes and presses with the team.

Agudelo 7.5 Loving this guy more and more!! His hold-up play, flicks, touch, dribbling, pass are top-notch. Hope to see his final third passing improve I feel like all of our guys could improve here really. But overall I’m grateful to have him as our main ST and it’s fun for USMNT fan who saw him come up!

Manley 10: Hello MOTM!!! So many open field tackles. Very calm patient defending knew where to move the ball. Scored a glorious half-bike what you will just getting to the ball first. He’s really stepping up this year lots of consistency in an off-season where we lost the stud CBs of Garcia and Batista. Scored a crucial away goal against Tampa Bay to speak of. Loved him on the mic post-game lots of love to the fans.

Subs with less game time:

Lacy 6: Decent cameo. Very fast athlete great touch. I expect him to challenge Mbongue in the mix for that second ST spot

Boni 6: good backup CB in a game where we needed to shut them down and keep control.

Marcena 6.5: We played a 3-5-2 which is what we finished the season and playoffs with. Our chance creation seems to continue to improve. I just want to see us making more high-quality decisions in the final third. I really saw us just playing more direct last night similar to last year than this “possession” we are adapting. But keep in mind new systems with coaches can take months-years to fully adapt so I’m pleased to see us tied with points for the top. Let’s keep chugging!!

Crowd 10/10: rowdy tonight!! Supporters were missing two drummers and some equipment so we as did our part today when they are usually brilliant. I LOVED how packed we were. Maybe around 85% or so? Great tribute to Maloney too brought a tear to my eye that beautiful man!!

Edit: By the way I won’t completely indulge my identity but anyone sitting by me will remember the thumbs-up I got from the side linesman early game 😂😂

Where to watch SAFC vs Tampa Rowdies match replay

This new deal with CBS is making things confusing for finding the games on tv. Not sure about y'all but I luckily tuned into the game last night in the 2nd half thinking I could rewind and start from the beginning like with ESPN+. Apparently not with the Golazo network. I also had to get a Paramount subscription to get it to work too. ugh. Golazo doesn't appear to have a section to re watch the game. SAFC scored the game winner at the end but they called it back for...well something, I couldn't see from the camera angle and the commentators were garbage. I literally could never tell if we scored or not because they had zero reactions to our goals. I want to re-watch the game specifically to see the play for our last goal that was called back. I didn't see anything on the play, and they didn't include it in the highlights. If anyone knows where to watch the game replay I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

Post Match Thread: San Antonio FC 2 - 2 Loudoun United

Same issues as last year. Not a good start. Hell, even last year we won our opener easily.

Marcina is already on the hot seat, doesn’t get better with this result, and next up is an almost guaranteed loss at Tampa Bay (who gets this week off).
