Discuss the Psycho-Pass anime series (and associate media franchise) here.
The series takes place in the near future, when it is possible to quantitatively measure a person's emotions, desires, and every inclination. In this way, it is also possible to measure a person's criminal tendency factor, which is used to judge criminals which is called "Psycho-Pass".

This episode is trying to tell me a bunch of things about Akane but I'm not sure if I understand where it all comes from. I think the show generally really good at conveying info to the viewer but this episode is strangely confusing to me, so I'll ask you about it.
Why did Kogami dramatically say "She's already a full-fledged detective." after hearing that her Psycho Pass survived the photo machine? What does that have to do with the profession? Maybe that already was his opinion and he chose to say it at that time, but I don't get why the photo machine is so significant to the topic. Is it because she's simply willing to take risks or is there something deeper going on there?
Also, towards the end of the episode Masaoka had quite a lot to say about Akane. What made him say those things? What experiences he had with her which made him think she "forgives and accepts society" and "believes in the value of being a detective"?
I'm asking because I feel like I'm missing something. Until this point the season took its time to slowly build the world and characters, but here it feels like it's straight up telling me how to feel about a character. I'm not sure if these people spent enough time cooking in the same pot/went through enough shit together to justify having these opinions. What do you think?
I just finished season 3 and the way it ended made me feel like there was more to the plot. Then I noticed there’s a 2nd season 3 on crunchy roll with 3 episodes in it. Is this random filler or do I need to watch these last 3 episodes? I am confusion… help
Which version of the anime do you prefer: English Dub or Sub?
I just ordered all 6 volumes, and I'm just curious if we get to see anything discussed in the show as it really happened, like the specimen case.
I think it's really cool when prequels show us events that we've only heard talked about in the source material. Does the manga cover anything like that, or is it all totally original material?
Which season of Psycho Pass is your favorite?
On holidays in Tokyo I found this adorable Makishima Shōgo acrylic stand. It's so cute, you wouldn't think he's a calculating psychopath <3
Decided to rewatch the Psycho-Pass series and I’m finding a hard time understanding something. After the Sibyl System reveals its true nature to Akane because they want to use her to make sure Makishima doesn’t get killed by Kogami to integrate him into the Sibyl System (like what they did to Toma), the Sibyl System continues to communicate with Akane through the Dominator because the Dominator serves as the wireless version/eyes of the Sibyl System…So tell me why, when Akane first meets/faces Makishima, where he is holding Akane’s friend, Yuki, hostage, the Sibyl System doesn’t switch to paralyzing/stun mode when it 100% wants to make sure that later on Makishima is caught and taken to them with any chance they get? Toma, and the other 246 minds behind the Sibyl System, should be able to see that Makishima is criminally asymptomatic and immediately take action to take him in, but this is never the case. Why?
Hello there.
I recently dived back into Psycho Pass, and I am almost finished with Season 3 first inspector. I watched it in chronolical order.
Now I'm interested in getting the Manga and Light Novels.
Are they available in German? If not, at least english? Honestly, I am not sure where to look or what to look for exactly, so I would appreciate any help you can give me!
I like how in the last episode kogami tries to rile up makishima, but makishima flipped it back on him in this episode. Makishima is an outcast, but latent criminal like kogami could fall into the same category.
At this point makishima ideal feels more than just an ideal, and more like a personal gripe towards the world. By getting rid of any institutions that regulate human behavior (government or in this case the sybil), presumably, any outcast whether criminal, latent, or asymptomatic would no longer be considered outcast. Then again, without governance there would just be chaos. If everyone chaotic then no one is chaotic. Is that makishima’s mentality?
Usually in cases these cases, especially in anime, the protagonist would recklessly chase down the antagonist, get folded, and through the power of plot convenience defeats the bad guy (cough Jojos bizarre adventure cough)
Fortunately, this is psycho pass.
I was glad when akane decided to chase makishima down with kogami.
I like akanes dialogue. It defines her stance with the sybil, how far her character has progress, and even something providing more of a basis for antagonizing makishima’s ideology.
Also, SHE IS CRAZY AS HELL FOR THAT TRUCK MOVE, but I love it 😂.
I like the detail of makishima smiling when seeing akane with an actual gun (idk if the smile was out of amusement or admiration).
I don’t what it is about makishima on his last legs desperately clinging to life with a smile, the music, and the sun setting on him that sticks with me. Looking back on it, I’d say a part of him wants to die, but only by his terms.
Interesting choice of words. Honestly with the existence of A.I., I can see where he’s coming from.
I thought his conclusion was underwhelming AT FIRST, but now that I think about it it’s VERY fitting. His conclusion even goes back to what he said in ep 11. “Only those who acknowledge the freedom to become a killer in spite of the current state of afairs, can judge him”, I’m paraphrasing but still. Even in his dialogue, he stated how if anyone should kill him, it should be kogami. He even seemed happy when kogami hoped that no one else would ever replace him. (I really got to do breakdown on him at some point). Therefore, this concludes kogamis arc for this season.
I’m not sure if using akane as a basis for making the Sybil seem ok might be and idea considering that not everyone is akane.
Akane making a declaration of war is something I’m welcome to, and the evil laugh is so disturbing.
I expected ginoza to become a latent criminal, but I like the detail of him taking off his glasses in honor of masaoka.
This ending is i don’t know how to describe it. On one hand we’re aware of who the enemy is, and that through a slow methodical process they have to be defeated. Akane, Ginoza, and kogami are in different positions compared to before, and yet at the moment akane and ginoza still have to protect the law despite the need for change and kogami is now on the run. It’s a bit hopeful, but also kind of dishearting. I’d give this episode a 9/10. It could be higher if put more thought into it.
I knew it was coming (got spoiled), but still 😢😭. R.I.P. to pops.
I have an idea as to why manipulated the engineer, mido, oryou, and even tried to do the same to kogami. Makishima he’s a genuine curiosity towards people, he even states “I want to see the naked splendor of people’s souls”, but I think he also wanted to see how far his plan would go with the helmets by using the people he manipulates as a test subject. He wanted to get a number of people within Japan who possessed suppressed free will and give them the means to achieve their goals which is why he had those helmets designed.
I’m curious on why he’s focused on kogami specifically. Is it due to his ability to figure out makishima or is there more such as how kogami operates on revenge ? However, oryou operated on revenge and makishima lost interest in her ? Not to mention, why did he take a 3 year break ?
I just finished season 1 & 2 for the first time. I’ve scrolled through this Reddit and thankfully some of my questions have been answered as far as watch order and the whole English dub situation.
But, I’m looking for a semi spoiler here! Will we see Kogami again? But not like how it was in 2 when our girl was just imagining him when trying to deduce situations, like does he actually become a part of/relevant to the story again?
If yes, I’m not looking for details, but while there’s a waiting period for the dub stuff to happen I wouldn’t mind an answer to this question. Thanks!
Something I found interesting on a rewatch. Judging from the masaoka’s dialogue with akane, the Sybil system was established around 20 years ago (he says ginoza was a little kid when the Sybil system was first introduced).
I know the Sybil is the new normal amongst the citizens, especially those around akanes age. However, it feels a bit unfathomable that those not as old as akane would have zero sense of fight or flight in the face of danger (i don’t imagine everyone in the crowd is a young adult). Then again, in a world like psycho pass, even raw human emotion and bodily sensations like stress are regulated. Akane even states how the primal feelings kogami expressed while fighting a drone in Ep 3 was of a bygone era.
Also, it was kinda cool seeing makashima go to work on those NPCs. I knew kogami said he was physically fit (not sure how he made the deduction but I’ll roll with it lol), but I never thought that he had hands. While I get makishima’s goal, I’m curious as to how his schemes with the engineer, mido, oryou, and kogami in ep 10 tie into his goal or what was the purpose of it? Also, why did he stop for 3 years after sasayama’s death ?
Hot take: The 2nd op is better than the first😬
I just read on Wikipedia that Giordano Bruno was confined in the tower of Nona. It's probably a coincidence, but psychopass does reference a bunch of stuff.
It may be a long shot, but if anyone if currently in Japan, this event is running through April! I'm hoping to see it this week.
From what I have been seeing they say that season 2 and 3 all of them are bad. Should i continue or are they going to ruin it for me ?
I’m rewatch the series (only seen half of ep 21 and I haven’t seen the finale). How did I miss that Gino literally indirectly calls masaoka his father.
Anyway, I can’t wait to post full thoughts on this series.
I am rewatching Psycho Pass for the first time after some years and I noticed there are many references to quotes from authors. My question is, what books should I read to understand the society and the sibyl system better?
I've been searching and there is no reference to the Wieviorka quote in the extended edition Season 1 on here. Can someone tell me what the quote is? The subject was on collectivism vs. individualism I believe.
Seriously spoiler-y so if you haven’t seen everything I’d stop now (like if you just discovered this a month ago like myself).
Anyway, I know this isn’t new, but who doesn’t like to gush about their favorites?
Obviously I adore Akane Tsunemori (I think that’s required, actually) and well, most of the cast. But favorites?
Nobuchika Ginoza would be like 3rd/4th. I feel his character arc was great but he skipped from tight ass to bad ass too quickly. I mean, still great but I feel there was so much more potential there. When we wanted to end it all, I felt that and wanted to explore it more. Also loved how because of his arm, he could fare better in some fights than Kogami could.
Shinya Kogami is easily my 2nd fav. I mean, idk if that needs explaining even.
FAVORITE: Arata Shindo hands down! And especially his care free, narcoleptic, and seemingly super naive self in the first half of season 3. He was a total goofball, didn’t try to be a tough guy, allowed himself to be vulnerable and a kid, and had so much heart (and stole the show with his surprise parkour moves)… and then the mentalist thing AND criminally asymptomatic?? Just so much in one character.
What about you guys??
Of course Akane has her strong views on law and justice but at the end of the day she truely belives that "the ends justify the means". Unlike Shimotsuki trying to be as gullible of the system as possible, Akane fully raelizes in the 1st season that Sybil is immoral according to her values, thus she knows, that it currently is the most successfull way of achiving the most important goal, which is a safe and relatively just society. So she does everything she can to preserve Sybil, even when it means that her friend's killer and one of the greatest criminals of all time will not be held accountable for his actions.
