Title. I (M20) had a speech impediment when I was a child that made it difficult to pronounce some sounds (at this point I can't remember which sounds specifically), and although I attended speech therapy, which resolved the problem for the greater part, I find that when I introduce myself to others they can't understand me. My name is Connor, which isn't a very complex name, but people often hear "Collin" or something similar.
I have a relatively deep voice which I feel adds to the struggle in saying my name, especially in loud settings. When I slow down I can sound out my name just fine, but saying it in a normal manner (like in introducing myself to someone) I find that my speech impediment reappears slightly and it hurts my confidence a lot.
Since enrolling in college I've introduced myself as C.J. (my first and middle initials) to most, and while I like this nickname it still feels weird making such a big change to my identity when everyone close to me and from my home knows me as Connor. However, I've never been a big fan of my real name as it doesn't quite match my personality (in my opinion), so maybe I just need to make the switch to C.J.
I'm wondering if others have dealt with a similar problem, and if so, how have you dealt with it?
Please advise the names of women (and maybe men?) similar to the name "Zendaya". I really like the second part of the name -daya. Or rather, aya! Origin and meaning are not particularly important. I know Aglaya from the popular ones, but it's too obvious
So I’m making a book where the main character is an fae, and I need a first and middle name that just rolls off the tongue like Sophie Elizabeth Foster, or Percy Jackson etc.
I really don’t want my maiden name for personal reasons and I don’t want my married last name either. What good last names go with Aislinn. I have no middle name.
Deano Lloyd McGoldrick
I like the name, but don’t love Penny Was thinking Elle or Ella, but I wonder if I’m not reaching…
I also like Poppy
Im pregnant and having a girl, me and my fiance wants to name her harley. My other two daughters have hyphenated names and i want the same for this child too.
But what name goes good hyphenated with Harley? (im also open too different spellings of the name harley)
So basically I am writing a story and I am deciding to add a new character in. I like the names Ophelia and Madeline but I can't seem to choose which one would be best. I know it can't be both, obviously, so which one do you like better?
My sister [26F] is obsessed with naming her children after months. She’s a big believer in “connecting to time” or something. She has three daughters, and their names are April, May, and June. But she just had her first boy. I said maybe she should go with August if she wanted to stick to the month theme but NOPE. FEBRUARY. God save this kid.
The name Ellery/Ellerie has exploded recently and I don’t get it. My BIGGEST problem with it is that it sounds like CELERY. The name is literally celery without the C. It’s like naming your child Roccoli or Omato or Arrot. Every single time I hear the name I think of celery. Maybe these parents just really like celery???
Hi! Is it completely fine to name my kid (f) Luminary?
Edit: THANK YOU EVERYONE. Will not use it as a name.
Timothy is a family name that I'm not SUPER fond of, Tim is out because of the namesake, and me husband despises Timmy. Feel free to get super creative with it! I'm looking for lots of options.
Samantha, Samara are both vetoed.
Last name starts with a ‘you’ sound.
I’ve been looking for boy/gender-neutral names starting with B for a while and they’re all kinda “eehhh” so I don’t really know at this point. Little side note here, but is Blanche starting to become a gender-neutral name? I’ve seen two boys with that name and all I can think of is The Golden Girls
Hello, I'm a veterinarian who is starting a business for home euthanasia during after hours for the times when people's pets require assistance at the worst time (6pm-6am Saturday and Sunday).
My original plan was to call this small business "Perth Home euthanasia," plain and simple but my friends believe it might be a bit confronting to those not comfortable with the word euthanasia. So we brainstormed some names and I wanted some opinions;
Final rest, Farewell with Family, Second Journey, Peaceful passing, Peaceful rest, Peaceful farewell, Running Free, It's time/ It's their time, Pet's relief
What do you believe sounds the softest for those starting the process of grieving?
Growing up I only had one cousin with this name. However since moving to Maine I’ve heard it at least 8 times. I’m not sure if it’s just a Maine thing or what. Just thought I’d share
Trans woman here trying to figure out my new name. I love the name hazel, it’s kinda mystical ( I like dnd) and it matches me as a natural dark-red head (like an auburn red) with freckles.
Here’s my issue, the name has the same first letter as my last name, which I’m afraid two H sounds feels chunky. But if all goes well and I stay with my girlfriend (she knew I was trans before dating me), then I will be changing my last name to hers in the future, which isn’t a H name. That’s probably years from now though.
However, on top of that my girlfriends name is Hannah, I know I shouldn’t base my name around someone else, but it’s still hard to stop the nagging in my head that our names might be too similar, too close?
Idk, I can’t think of any other names that make me feel how I feel about the name hazel. Maybe I just haven’t found one yet. But I’m afraid it clashes with both my last name and my girlfriend’s name.
Anybody have any advice if I’m just overthinking things? Or if you have any other name suggestions that might fit? I would really appreciate help.
EDIT: Thank you all sooooooo much for the wonderful comments! I’ve never had a post with so many people contributing before! I have decided to go with Hazel and I’m very happy and excited about it ☺️
Howdy, so I've got a character for webcomic I'm working on, the entire theme revolves around the afterlife and to reflect that, the main character's last name is Soul, but I've come to realize that thematically it's far too heavy-handed.
So, I was hoping I could get some help in finding ways to write out the name, having it Look more like a surname while still being pronounced as "Soul"
Thanks!
So, I’ve been thinking about hyphenating my last name. Long story short: how does one choose which name to put first? I’ve tried doing pros and cons, writing it out, etc. but I can’t choose which name to put first when I go to hyphenate it. 😕
Background info: I used to want to change my current last name to the last name most of my family has. However, everyone seems to like my current last name (it’s German) and it just resonates personally with a person I wish to not associate it with. Recently I’ve decided to hyphenate both names together…but I can’t decide which name to put first. My current last name and then my family’s last name, or vise versa.
Any tips or thoughts would be appreciated :)
I’m 16 weeks pregnant I need cute unique mixed baby boy and girl names I can’t find any I like and it’s stressful
It's for characters could work fo actual name too probably, i saw more than 10 people with Sydney as their name so yeah.
Hi, I know there are multiple ways to spell a name and it varies depending upon what country, culture and language. If you live in Australia what would be your guess on how to spell Selena/Selina?
Hi there, i am trying to choose a surname for myself, i am searching for something unique but not too outlandish. Prefer something feminine or "floraly" names. I would love some feedback it would help so much. Thankyou!
Whenever I meet a new group of children, at least one of them tells me their aunt's dog or cat has my name. This has happened with adults, too. Sometimes I joke that my mom had an aunt whose dog she was really close with and that's where I got my name.
I checked, and statistically a dog is 5.3x more likely to have my name than a human. If you grouped 100,000 humans and 100,000 dogs together, there would be 25 humans with my name and 133 dogs. I don't know why I'm writing this right now, and I'm going to stop here. Thank you.
Edit: u/rachiem7355 got it correct, my name is Gracie 😭
I've exclusively gone by my middle name my whole life. It's all I've known. A lot of people in my life have no to reason to even know it's not my actual first name!
I'm not to sure why Ive always been called it. I believe it's because my sister and I actually have quite similar first names, that could have the same shortening. Think along the lines of Charlotte and Charmaine could both be Char for short. Apparently my parents didn't realise how similar they were ! So I've just always been known as my middle name.
As I've got older and time has gone by, I'm finding it more and more of a PITA. Especially now more things are becoming ID centric, I feel like I'm having to explain it all the time which is quite tiresome. There are fewer documents I can put the name I use on as everything must tie up, computer says no etc. Maybe this is why it was more common in times gone by - less officialdom meant it was never an issue.
So my question is...Any other middle names out there? How do you REALLY find it?
I'm in the UK and seriously considering changing it formally by Deed Poll. Anyone swapped the order of their names for this reason?
Im torn as My First Middle Surname is actually a nice name altogether. It flows much nicer than middle first surname. However I don't think I can put up with explaining it much longer. Its always when you're most on edge it comes up, hospitals, first day at work etc.
Good last names for Yohan? Any suggestions?
Sorry to anyone with that name lol! It's just a personal gut feeling thing that I can't even explain.
I do love the nickname Juni, can anyone think of names other than Juniper that the nickname could work with?
Does Junia feel like a full appropriate name? But then again only removing 1 letter barely counts as a nickname... argh 🥲
