Namecoin is a blockchain that acts as a decentralized alternative to the DNS and public TLS CA's, which resists censorship, hijacking, and MITM attacks.

Namecoin uses the .bit top-level domain. .bit domains are "special-use" (not part of the DNS; similar to .onion); hence, to resolve .bit domain names, one must have either a copy of the Namecoin blockchain (a full node such as Namecoin Core) or a lightweight SPV client (such as Electrum-NMC or ConsensusJ-Namecoin).

ABOUT NAMECOIN (sign: ℕ; code: NMC)

Namecoin is a blockchain that acts as a decentralized alternative to the DNS and public TLS certificate authorities, which resists censorship, hijacking, and MITM attacks.

Namecoin uses modified Bitcoin software, and like Bitcoin there is a limit of 21 million Namecoins. Each Namecoin is divisible down to 8 decimal places.

SUBREDDIT RULES

  • No "Namecoin accepted at store X" styled posts. This subreddit is dedicated to the discussion of Namecoin development and problems/possibilities of the Namecoin protocol. "Buy X with Namecoin" posts are not welcome. Please pay for a reddit advertisement if you wish to promote your product or store.

  • Keep it Civil. Rational discussion is great. Weasel words and Personal Attacks do nothing but increase your own ego at the cost of an entire community's reputation and breadth of knowledge.

  • Read the FAQ first. Namecoin has a FAQ. If you're asking a question, check the FAQ first to see if it's answered there. This saves our volunteers time and allows them to focus on answering your more interesting questions.

  • Don't delete questions after getting answers. If you ask a question and then receive an answer, you shouldn't delete the original question from the public record. The people answering questions here are volunteers who are trying to benefit the public. Deleting your question after getting an answer eliminates the public benefit, and starts to resemble nonconsensual unpaid consulting. (Obviously, if you accidentally doxxed someone or something similar, you're more than welcome to delete that info from your question.)

  • No URL shorteners or referral links. URL shortening or rehosting services are a security hazard as they prevent readers from figuring out where a link will lead. Referral links produce a conflict of interest and incentivize posters to spam.

  • No misleading promotion of centralized resolution services. Promotion of .bit resolution mechanisms that rely on centralized validation is not permitted, unless accompanied (in the same comment) by an explicit warning that such resolution mechanisms are centralized and allow the service operator to censor and intercept all .bit traffic. (SPV validation, such as Electrum-NMC, does not qualify as centralized; nor does validation by another machine that is under the user's control, as can be done on iOS with a remote ncdns+Encaya instance.) Tools aimed at debugging-only use cases, such as block explorers, are exempt from this rule.

  • Breaking any of the subreddit rules listed above will result in a permanent ban without warning.

Can I store NameCoin on a Ledger Nano S?

I'm thinking of buying some on CoinEx but don't know anything about the exchange and want to store it somewhere safe for a long term moon shot. What's the best way to do this? Hardware wallet, cold storage?

I have an unused Nano S, given to me as a gift(I know risky). Might have to figure out how to clear out any possible shinanigans that may be on it. Reset and restore or something?

Just a housekeeping note...

Since apparently a bunch of people thought I was dead (wat) last time I was absent from Reddit for a while, and I prefer not to feed rumors, I just want to mention that the clowns who run Reddit infrastructure have broken multiple things in the past few months, and that this breakage has impaired my ability to use Reddit efficiently. Some parts of this have since been worked around by workflow changes on my end (thanks to the anonymous people who helped, you know who you are), other parts are not yet worked around.

So, until this is properly fixed, expect me to be not-very-present on Reddit. I don't know when or if this will be properly fixed. While it's generally a pretty safe assumption that I'm not dead and that I'm still working on Namecoin (despite the best efforts of the Saudis), if anyone wants to ask me questions with a better response time than Reddit, our Matrix channel is probably your best bet.

Cheers and Happy Hacking.

Jeremy!

How did the presentation go at 37c3? I happened to come across an article online introducing ways to buy and sell historical NFTs at 37c3. Is this information accurate? Did you plan to present on NFT trading? Where can I find the video from 37c3? Was it entirely canceled due to COVID, preventing any attendance at all

When will we be able to browse .bit domains on any device using chrome or bing?

I am wondering about a couple of things:

  1. When will .bit domains be easily accesible from any device (ie. like a .com)
  2. When will it be easy to host .bit domains (like a godaddy or namecheap)
  3. When wil it be easy to exchange a domain name with someone else?

Can't Namecoin be a solution to DDoS attacks?

In the professional gaming league matches of League of Legends, which is popular worldwide, incidents of live broadcast interruptions due to real-time DDoS attacks continue to occur consecutively. Many fans of League of Legends are suffering from the disruptions during live matches. Riot Games has been unable to find a solution and defend against DDoS attacks. Could Namecoin be a realistic alternative that can solve these problems?

.bit domain names

So whatever happened to the .bit domain name?

I bought an antminer s9 and I’ve been looking into alternative proof of work sha-256 coins.

It seems like a really good idea to use the cryptocurrency to secure internet domain names. What happened?

Building a Dex for Namecoin. Looking for early adopters and backers.

I am building a Dex for Namecoin (using Ethereum). The setup is similar to Wrapped Bitcoin (or any other Wrapped Token).

Essentially, an ERC-20 token is launched (Wrapped Namecoin) that has a mint and burn mechanism. The mint happens with an allocation on a Namecoin address of the same amount minted (proof of reserves). The burn happens with the removal of liquidity from the ERC-20 token as well as sending the equivalent NMC to the burner.

Trading: A pool is created on Uniswap where users can exchange WNMC for any token of their choosing (or vice versa).

The website: https://wnamecoin.com

The proof of concept is functional on the Goerli chain. You can convert Georli Eth to WNMC or vice-versa and also burn your WNMC.

Token Implementation contract: https://goerli.etherscan.io/token/0x42086f8773d557097c4dd6a7d0d7b2c828e5ea12

To contact: contact [at] wnamecoin.com

If this is interesting to the developers of Namecoin, feel free to reach out.

The Trezor functionality of the Electrum-NMC wallet is experiencing issues.

Electrum-NMC is the Electrum wallet for NAMECOIN.

You can obtain the latest version of this wallet for Namecoin at the following address: https://www.namecoin.org/download/betas/#electrum-nmc

Trezor device recognition in Electrum-NMC is working smoothly without any problems.

I have purchased several .bit domains from a different address and transferred them to the Electrum-NMC Trezor address, considering the enhanced security of Trezor.

The Electrum-NMC wallet supports the purchase, sale, and resetting of .bit domains for Namecoin.

Transferring Namecoin from the Electrum-NMC Trezor address to another address works seamlessly without any issues.

However, when attempting to purchase .bit domains with the Electrum-NMC Trezor address, trying to transfer .bit domain addresses imported from another wallet, attempting to change the settings of owned .bit domains, and in various similar scenarios, clicking the confirmation button on the Trezor device results in multiple error messages, and the transaction fails.

Please investigate and address this issue.

I have no control over the .bit domain addresses sent to the Trezor wallet address. It seems like the Electrum-NMC Trezor wallet is a graveyard for .bit domain addresses.

I attempted recovery using BIP39, treating it as a standard wallet in Electrum-NMC rather than a Trezor device. However, there is no way to access the Trezor Namecoin wallet address created as a hidden wallet, not as a standard wallet in the Trezor Suite.

Please help; this is a critical issue.

Thank you.

I cannot control the domain address transferred to the Tezor device wallet of Electrum-NMC.

What is the solution? Do I need to wait for an update of Electrum-NMC?

Where can I buy namecoin with my credit card?

Where can I buy namecoin with my credit card and put it on my own hardware wallet. I don't want to trust an exchange and whatnot. I would like to buy namecoin and receive it at my own address.

Edit: Like I do with Bitcoin, there are several brokers out there you can buy Bitcoin with credit card, Paypal or local payment solution and put in your own wallet address and get it directly transfered to your own hardware wallet.

Just as I buy my own Bitcoin, ETH and others. I store them all on my hardware wallet.

I have already checked: https://www.namecoin.org/exchanges/

But I don't want to register and try out all of them. I already made a mistake once with Bitcoin when I bought it online, and it was stored on the exchange on the online wallet. Luckily a small test amount.

I don't trust exchanges because they could go bankrupt or worse, so I want everything in my own control how it is supposed to be with crypto.

Why is there no exchange other than coinex where Namecoin is listed?

Southxchange is excluded because there is no volume of transactions.

Why can't we see namecoin in binance or coinbase?

If Coinex were to fail, Namecoin would disappear from the market.

We need another market i think...

Can we expect a revival of Namecoin?

It looks dead but I believe in the power of the Namecoin community. One day, namecoin will become the second most famous crypto after Bitcoin.
