If you’re eating out and it’s a place where the kitchen is visible, greet the chef if possible!

You would be surprised how much better your food or portion might turn out!

Wine Stain On My White Rug

I had a friend staying with me and they spilled red wine on my white rug. I have tried Resolve and Oxiclean to no end. What else can I do?

Take down fruit flies with a spray bottle filled with rubbing alcohol

EDIT: some people in the comments have raised valid concerns about the dangers of inhaling alcohol vapors. I decided to POUR BOILING WATER down the drain everyday until they’re gone. It’s simple and fast enough. Also, dish soap + water mix in spray bottle seems safer.

I don't dilute the alcohol. I spray the suckers as I see them and they immediately drop, even if mid-flight. When they're disoriented on the floor/surface I whack them with a fly swatter. I saved myself the chore of going to amazon and buying those fruit fly traps, or trying to make the solution on my own. Cheapest solution ever.

Cleaning a fridge freezer

So I recently moved into an apartment with a fridge freezer that smelled a bit. It wasn't anything horrendous just a subtle kind of smell. Like a mixture of stale food/drink mixed with some generic cleaning product that the landlord clearly lightly used beforehand.

I don't particularly want to put my food into a box with the whiff of other peoples milk & washing up liquid so I've given it a deep clean by unplugging the fridge, wiping the whole thing down with water & washing up liquid, adding baking soda (which actually didn't seem to make much of a difference & was a pain in the ass to clean off), leaving the doors open for a day or two, spraying it down with water & white vinegar and that seemed to really start making a difference. Finally, I packed the whole thing with newspaper & put a deodorizer thing in there, which is either working tremendously well, or it's just masking the odor until I take the newspaper out.

I want to round off the whole thing by turning it back on with the newspaper still in there for a few days. My question is, what can I leave in the freezer compartment whilst I do this? Can I leave something like newspaper in there whilst it's on, or is it just going to freeze up and make it a huge mess?

For gift ideas, tell someone you already bought a gift for them and have them try to guess what it is!

Have a partner or family member who's difficult to shop for? Tell them you already got them a gift well ahead of time and prompt them to guess what the gift might be. If they play ball, they'll give you some reasonable ideas for gifts they probably won't hate!

And if they do hate it, at least it might be a fun joke to reveal how you got the idea.

Getting rid of grill soot on outdoor rock wall?

I've used soap/water/scrub brush, and that did SOME good, but my wife wants it totally gone. Only issue is no bleach, which would damage the rock, and she wants something organic/nontoxic.

Calling all organization wizards!

Our pantry space is limited, and I'm in dire need of some clever storage solutions to maximize every inch.

Any tips or hacks for making the most out of a small pantry? Whether it's stackable containers, hanging organizers, or a brilliant labeling system, I'm all ears!

Thanks in advance for the lifesaving advice!

Gnat issue (help needed please)

Hi everyone, usually I'm one to google and the issue gets dealt with but it's gotten to the point where I need others input. I also don't really know where to post this on Reddit either. My boyfriend and I moved into an apartment and the first 2 days were fine, no bugs no nothing. We've been here for almost a month now and every day we are killing about 10-20 gnats. I have done everything google states at this point: putting bleach down all the drains, putting boiling hot water down them, made sure the garbage disposal doesn't have stuff sitting in the sink, Apple cider vinegar, water, sugar and dish soap method (which has been killing the 10-20 gnats). I've found them basically anywhere in the rooms mainly the living room and kitchen, I find dead ones in the fridge and freezer because when we open those they must fly in and then get killed. I just can't live like this and I seriously don't know what to do. There's also never any dirty dishes or food left out (because l'm a clean freak) The apartment is always clean and there is never like spoiled food in the fridge or on the counters.

They just keep coming back and I seriously don't understand how and it's starting to really stress me out. I just put in a pest control maintenance request but I really don't even know what that will do. What do I do? I never have had gnats this bad normally it's just putting bleach down the drains and then they go away.

I need help, what do I do?

How do I remove the tape that is stuck on the window sides?

Hello,

I just moved to a new apartment and notice that there is still tape left on some windows.

The building is done last year, but this tape on the windows might be installed even earlier.

I tried scratching, but it comes off in very small pieces and I don't want to damage the window.

I want to try with Scalpel or to clean with some detergent/alchocol.

Do you have any suggestion with what to try?

Photo stuck to picture frame

I have a really old photo of my great grandparents that I've been wanting to transfer to a new picture frame. I realized today that the photo itself is stuck onto the glass of the old picture frame and I'm not sure how to remove it.

I don't have any copies of this photo at all so I need to be super careful. Any tips are appreciated!

EDIT: not sure how I forgot to mention this originally but the glass of the old picture frame is actually cracked which is why I wanted to replace it, and also why I have to be more careful about this process since I'm unable to photocopy

Determined to make it work!

Drill a hole in the lid of the new plastic cans to make it work with the paint stick. Because the provided lid only works on the metal paint cans. (We saved money not buying an empty metal can, and a trip to the hardware store, AGAIN!)

How do you get the chemical smell of dishwasher cleaner out of your dishwasher?

My wife used one of those cascade dishwasher cleaners, and since then the dishwasher reeks like chemical flowers. It makes all the dishes taste funny and smell as well. We usually do all the ‘free and clear’ stuff but she used that on accident. The smell and tastes are lingering after over a dozen washes and even trying to run some vinegar. Any ideas how to get rid of that chemical floral smell?

Keep getting shocked!

So I work as a security guard and i’m in a guard house the whole shift. Every time I get up and touch something that is connected to the guard house let it be the window, door, metal frame, and even the control boxes for the gates I get a pretty big shock to my hand. I was wondering if there’s anything I can do to stop it because it’s driving me insane for the 8 to 12 hours I work a day.

Moving by using the post / packing stations

In my country, sending a large parcel of around the size of an ikea moving box costs between $3-$4. I have moved my entire kitchen and all my clothes in 20+ packages for a total of $80 across the country. Moving with a supplier would have cost me $180 or more

What to use to cover light connections outside?

I have string lights connecting to each other at various locations. I need to protect the connections from water intrusion and potential damage. I have so far applied electrical tape that should result in what i need, however, i am not comfortable with the tape only. What type of plastic covers can i use to put on top of these connections?

Sorting Laundry in Small Spaces?

I have a limited amount of space to stash and sort dirty laundry. Currently I’m using one tall, narrow laundry bin for all of my dirty clothes, but I end up wasting time dumping the entire thing out every time I need to do a particular load (jeans, activewear, delicates, etc.). I’m looking for a tall, narrow laundry sorting system that doesn’t look too hideous if guests see it out in the open. I’m trying to find tall, narrow stackable laundry sorters (or individual stacking crates) that fit the bill. Any suggestions? I don’t want to waste time sorting all of my clothes every time I do a load of laundry.

Cheaper gym membership

Anytime Fitness (possibly other gyms too) have a different membership price depending on the area you sign up in. One membership gets you access to all of their gyms worldwide.

You can sign up online at a cheaper gym, on a prepaid plan, and then access your more expensive local gym. The membership will eventually transfer to your local gym if that's the one you use most, but your fees won't be affected until you need to renew (12 months).

How to stretch cashmere sweater

Is there any way to stretch /elongate a cashmere sweater? Could the tailor do anything to stretch/widen it? I read a thread about someone accidentally making their cashmere sweater longer.

Something Funky in the Air?

My daughter got a smoking deal on a Mini Cooper. Trouble was that it smelled SO STRONGLY of cigarettes and no air freshener or deodorizing spray helped. The leather seats were saturated with the odor. I had the idea to set our ozone generator on the floorboard and let it run about an hour at a time, and it worked its miracle. I just closed a door as much as possible to create a seal over the cord. I had bought this thing several years ago to use after cooking odors, and since then it gets whipped out before packing our Airstream, when hunters stay in our cabin, or if the house just doesn't smell fresh. You can buy these things on Amazon; mine is labeled AIRTHEREAL MA5000. There's specific safety precautions when using an ozone generator, including getting all humans and plants out of the building before use.
