While I don’t think LoK filled the shoes that a lot us(me included) had following ATLA. I hate seeing so many ppl trash it rather than finding the positive & looking for the light rather than the darkness as Iroh taught us.

While the plot may have been a bit all over the place I fell in love with some of the characters throughout their journeys. Bolin & Tenzin’s entire family were my personal favorites and I loved watching the kids grow up especially.

I’d love to hear what each of your favorite characters/concepts/moments are throughout the show and I hope all of us can look for the light a little more in life rather than focusing on the darkness. “Because if you look for the dark, that’s all you will ever see.” -Iroh

So recently I saw the issue of whether Korra was right or wrong to open the Spirit Portals raised. At the time, I didn't really understand her reasoning. But I also thought that the later seasons clearly vindicated her choice by showing how the world was more in balance afterward and most importantly allowing the world the chance to undo the Air Nomad Genocide.

It's been years since I was interested in watching any of sf debris' videos, but a little while back I briefly saw part of clip of him talking about how he considers Korra to be a screw-up who broke the world and ruined lives by leaving the Spirit Portal open. He also characterized Tenzin's speech about her choice at the start of Season 3 to be him selfishly telling her not to care about the suffering of "her victims."

But that series of videos aside, I was wondering how common of a viewpoint that is. I never really interpreted the damage done by the Spirit Vines or the initial frustrating adjustment period to be a terrible or long lasting or widescale level of harm, especially compared to the long term changes like bringing back the Air Nation. Nor did I interpret the main point of Tenzin's advice about the Avatar's role be that the poor and vulnerable aren't important and don't deserve her help.

I know TLOK as a show is still controversial among some, but is that really how most (or many) people saw this issue? It seemed pretty clear to me that the implication was that spirits and humans were more or less able to coexist in a new equilibrium by the end of Season 4, and that the intention of the show was that the changes Korra brought to the world were mostly positive.

Oh and I'm still only part way into the comics, so lets limit the scope of the discussion to the show itself for now.

I want to ask about the length of Amon and Tarrlok , I see that Tarrlok is the same length as Tenzin, that is, Tenzin is longer than Mako and the height of Mako is 188cm or 6.2 This has been confirmed by the creators and this leads to the height of Tenzin and Tarrlok is 6.4 or 193cm because the length difference between Mako and Tenzin is not less than two inches and I see Amon between Tenzin and Mako that is, his length is 6.3 or 191cm

Actually, there’s probably going to be new people reading this so I should introduce myself: Hello! I’m genZcommentary. I do commentaries on movies and television shows. For the past year I’ve been writing commentary for Netflix’s Avatar the Last Airbender, then for the original series. Now that I’ve finished those, I’m finally ready to start watching Legend of Korra!

If you’re unfamiliar with how I do commentary, here’s how it works: I watch the media, and every time I have a thought I pause and write it down. So I guess my commentary is a “reaction” style commentary. You can read my thoughts as I’m having them!

An update for my regular readers before I get started: First: SHE SAID YES! That’s right, my proposal wasn’t stupid after all, and now I’m going to get married! (Probably. Honestly, we’re a little worried the Supreme Court is going to overturn it but no matter what the law says, I love this woman and she’ll be my wife even if we can’t get a piece of paper to say it) I guess it’s time for me to come out to my parents. They’ll probably disown me, but honestly I care less and less about that with every passing year.

A warning: I am told that there are multiple beautiful women in this show and they are all adults. Some of you may have picked up on how thirsty a lesbian I am, so expect this commentary to have way more of me swooning.

Okay, let’s get into it because I am really anxious to watch this!

Episode 1- Welcome to Republic City

1. Oh my god, new opening! I saw Kyoshi and Roku, and was that an adult version of Aang? And I’m pretty sure Water was Korra! OH MY GOD it’s being narrated by one of Aang’s kids! Aang had kids, you guys! Ah… I was wondering what was going to happen to the Fire Nation colonies. Once colonizers have put down roots you basically can’t remove them without genocide, and clearly Aang wasn’t going to allow that. But the colonies are their own country now! That’s cool! I’m sure there’s no resentment or bad feelings over that from the Earth Kingdom lol

Well, I’d tell Aang Rest In Peace but the avatar doesn’t get to rest, ever.

Iroh’s Secret Club is still around! Awesome.

OH MY GOD she is so cute and precious! Hi, Korra! The last time I saw you, you were a twelve year old boy! I see she already has a decent handle on bending. I wonder why that is. Do the experiences of the avatar’s previous life affect who they become in the current? Because Aang didn’t want to be the avatar and ran away from his responsibilities, causing a lot of suffering because of it. Is that why he’s embraced being the avatar so readily and early in his new life?

2. Time jump! Korra’s already a badass. I’m kind of glad she’s already proficient at bending because I just watched a whole show about the avatar learning how to bend and having to start all over might feel a bit too repetitive.

Oh wait, she still has some learning to do. Oh well, at least she’s mastered three of them lol I’m guessing it’s air because as a kid we saw her bend water, earth, and fire.

So Korra isn’t as spiritual as Aang was. Interesting! I wonder what the avatar is like when they’re mostly physical. Master Katara?! Katara’s still alive?! This must be so weird for her. Does she see Aang when she looks at Korra? That close-up of her smiling face holds so many narrative possibilities!

Is Korra’s animal companion a giant freaking dog?! I mean, it can’t be just a dog.

3. Oh? Korra needs permission to leave this walled compound? Hey that’s a sky bison! It can’t be Appa, right? I guess it could be. Katara is still alive, so why not Appa? Appa was only a few years old during ATLA so it’s possible!

I wish you guys could see my face right now. Those are airbenders! Is that Aang’s son? Are those his grand-kids? Ah! That is Aang’s son! And Katara’s his mom! Kataang forever, bitches! Damn, Katara reminds me so much of Gran Gran right now. Ah, that girl just called her Gran Gran! And yes, Katara. What happened to Zuko’s mom? I’m dying to know! And the girl’s name is Jinora.

Damn, Aang’s son is kind of a stud, isn’t he? Lol three kids and a fourth on the way? Well… I guess there probably was a lot of pressure on him to keep a nearly extinct nation going. He probably has a bunch of wives and a lot of kids (probably not, I doubt censors would allow that but it makes the most sense from a cultural perspective!)

Aang has more than one kid! One of them is named Bumi! Aww! Okay, but this one is Tenzin. Gotta remember that.

Oh man, this is so odd! Korra’s past life is connected to every other person in this scene! She’s Katara’s former husband, Tenzin’s father, and those kids’ grandfather! They all seem to be capable of separating the two but still… you have to wonder what’s going on in their heads. Is there some part of Korra’s subconscious that feels warm whenever she looks at Katara or Tenzin? When they look at her, do they have to stop themselves from thinking of her as Aang? Or do they have to remind themselves that she once was Aang?

Why does her airbending training have to wait? Why can’t she leave the compound? They’re clearly trying to shelter her from something. But what’s so dangerous that a three fourths of the way trained avatar can’t deal with it themselves?

4. What is so dangerous? Why would Aang tell them to keep his next life safe until they master all four elements?

Wow, Korra’s kind of muscular, huh? That shot of her back… I’m already starting to swoon guys lol Muscles on a woman… I just think they’re neat!

Okay, that’s not Appa. It’s Oogi. Cute name! And wow, Korra has the prettiest eyes!

This is such cool storytelling! Aang ran away from home to escape being the avatar, and Korra’s running away from home to embrace being the avatar. Wait, what does Katara mean “My brother and many of my friends are gone”? Is Sokka dead? Is she the last surviving member of Team Avatar?

5. Wow! Those ships have gotten an upgrade since ATLA, huh? Holy crap, there’s a car in the cargo hold! They already have the combustion engine! I don’t know why I’m surprised lol I pointed out a few times how far they came technologically in ATLA. By the end of the show they already had tanks, submarines, giant drills, and airships. It seems like at least four or five decades have passed, so they probably have lots of more modern technology.

Yep. There’s that muscle definition. I’m really glad Korra’s an adult because she is total eye candy

Wait, they call cars sato-mobiles instead of automobiles? Neat! Looks like they’ve had their industrial revolution!

Korra’s reaction to seeing a giant statue of her past self reminds me of the first time Aang saw a giant statue of his past self lol

Oh boy. Before Korra can master airbending, she must first master traffic laws.

6. lmao Korra’s face when she used firebending to cook that fish was hilarious. Aw, looks like Republic City hasn’t quite figured out how to help the homeless yet (or is too corrupt to, like we are!). When you think about it, Korra’s technically homeless, isn’t she? And now she’s on the run from the law.

There’s a political movement! It seems some nonbenders feel like benders are oppressing them (and Korra threatening them isn’t exactly helping the benders’ case). Fascinating! It makes total sense too! The 100 year war was mostly fought by benders, after all, and most of the suffering of the people came at the hands of benders. Firebenders for obvious reasons, but also the Dai Li earthbenders oppressed their own people, and waterbenders had problems with oppressing women.

Huh, there are gangsters now. I guess organized crime flourishes in peacetime. But the gangsters are benders, which probably is helping fuel political unrest.

I love her. Korra is so freaking cool. I just wish she were threatening to hospitalize me instead…

The police are metal benders? That is cool. Oh, Korra’s under arrest? Is it because vigilantism is illegal in this world too? Man, the avatar is going to have way less authority and autonomy from here on out, aren’t they?

Okay, they’ve caught Korra and suddenly I’m concerned for their safety. What if the adrenaline rush and trapped animal instincts kick in and she goes into the avatar state?

7. Was that a statue of Toph?! Is that Toph’s daughter?! (Toph, why is your daughter kind of hot? I like her scars…)

lmao Korra is such a brat! I love it! But on the other hand, she’s also insightful. Her observations about the city and Tenzin’s need to stay and do his job are on point, as is her point that keeping her locked up at the South Pole isn’t doing her or the world any favors.

But then, the world isn’t in danger at the moment. There’s no war, no apocalyptic threat looming. What exactly does the avatar do during an era of peace?

8. Naga’s a polar bear dog! That makes so much sense lol

Wowza, Korra is strong if she can pick up a grown man and three children at the same time. I sure am glad my future wife and I are polyamorous because I think I’m falling in love again lol

Cameras and microphones. So strange! Also, you know what’s weird? Maybe this is me projecting or seeing what I want to see, but sometimes Korra’s facial expressions and mannerisms remind me a lot of Aang’s. Like just now when she’s talking to the paparazzi, she does the same thing where Aang looks up and frowns a bit when he’s thinking about something, or earlier when she had the same wide-eyed open-mouthed smile when she was excited. She reminds me of Book 1 Aang! And I swear to god I’ve seen Aang make these exact hand movements that she’s making during her speech!

Gee, I wonder if the mysterious guy in the mask with the vague plans is a villain lol but I bet it’s a misdirection. Those are the ones who were against bender oppression, right? I bet Korra thinks their the bad guys (because she does seem to have a rather simplistic moral view of things so far) but toward the end of the show realizes the real villains are Republic City’s leaders. Man, I hope Tenzin and Lin aren’t villains because so far I really like them!

Episode 2- A Leaf in the Wind

1. Oh man, Korra standing in the same pose as Aang’s statue in the background is awesome! Also I like this old radio-style narrator. It gives the setting a bit of character, you know?

Korra wants to go to a pro-bending tournament (I’m guessing it’s an evolution of the bending competition that Toph once competed in) but Tenzin says it makes a mockery of tradition. Ugh… first strike against Tenzin. Just because culture has evolved and changed doesn’t mean what came before has to go away. Shunning the new and clinging to the old is how you get left behind by the world. Too many people adopt that mindset and society stagnates or regresses.

Even here she’s still under guard. There’s got to be something more to this whole isolation thing. Honestly, I’m starting to wonder if the White Lotus aren’t going to turn out to be the villains, trying to control the avatar like the Dai Li controlled the Earth King. I seriously doubt Iroh would approve of his secret club confining someone this way.

2. Interesting that Tenzin took the time to cover Korra’s arms there. Is this the avatar version of antiquated old men insisting that female students wear long skirts and ankle socks and never show their shoulders?

So Korra struggles with air, much like Aang struggled with earth. I can’t remember, which element did Roku struggle with?

This animation is super cool! But… is this really appropriate for the first lesson? I mean, that seems pretty hard to do. Maybe Korra should learn something like how to be light on her feet first? Especially since that contraption is knocking the shit out of her, geez.

3. Tenzin doesn’t want Korra listening to the radio now. Maybe I’m being biased here, but wouldn’t allowing Korra to enjoy herself and have fun be more conductive to airbending training than stuffy rules? I mean, Tenzin is being pretty rigid, and airbending is anything but rigid. Aang and the other young airbenders had games centered around airbending, and Gyatso was just as mischievous as Aang was. Not to mention it’s right there in their name: Air Nomads. Nomads move from place to place. Korra being confined to a single location and forced to do rigid training seems antithetical to airbending culture.

“Shouldn’t you be in bed by now?” Okay, dude, she’s a grown woman. Let’s roll back the attitude, okay? Man, Tenzin is so different from Aang.

Lmao guys I just nearly pissed myself laughing when Korra scratched her butt. I don’t know why that was so funny to me.

Ah, I see my streak of making points that the show makes for me shortly after I press play continues even into Legend of Korra! Lol Korra makes the same point about her training!

4. Damn this animation is gorgeous! The water, the lights on that building… I can’t even imagine how hard it must have been to do that!

Okay, I’m gonna be inappropriate for a moment here… Korra has really nice boobs. Seriously, mine aren’t that nice. I’m equal parts jealous and longing lol

This guy’s name is Bolin. He has pretty eyes too! This other guy’s name is Mako (isn’t that the name of Iroh’s voice actor?). He doesn’t have pretty eyes but he does have sharp features. Kind of reminds me of Mai. Oh, Bolin and Mako are brothers and athletes.

So probending teams have one of each type of bender (except for airbenders, for obvious reasons) working as a team? People from all three remaining nations, working together in harmony and balance. What’s more avatar than that? No wonder Korra likes probending so much. Also, Mako’s a firebender and Bolin is an earthbender. I’m assuming they’re adopted brothers.

I wonder how Azula would do at probending.

5. lol Korra just grabbing Bolin like that and tossing him around like a doll. I love how polite Bolin is too, even apologizing for assuming when he thinks he got Korra’s ethnicity wrong.

Hey! Bolin’s lesson about staying light on her feet is gonna translate well into airbending! Maybe he should be her airbending master, since he’s already taught her something more useful than Tenzin lol

6. Can’t really blame Korra for losing her temper here. Those things look like they hurt when they bash her around like that and Tenzin’s not giving her any real advice. He seems to expect her to just be able to do it if she tries enough times.

Okay yes, it is pretty messed up to destroy an antique that’s thousands of years old. But on the other hand… shouldn’t that kind of thing not bother Tenzin? Don’t the Air Nomads teach detachment from material things? On the other hand, Aang had some trouble with detaching himself from material things too lol remember Toph and his glider?

She has a point. What has he actually taught her? So far he’s told her to be like a leaf, and meditate. I get that airbending requires patience, but you can’t just tell someone to have patience without teaching them how to be patient. I have a friend who works with children and she’s told me about some the things they do to teach children how to be patient. Those same techniques work on adults too! But those techniques do not involve throwing the child into a series of revolving doors and telling them to be patient while they get smacked around.

7. “You must promise me that your teenage years won’t be like this.” “I make no such promises.” lol I think I’m gonna like Tenzin’s children. But also, how old is Korra? I get she’s a teenager but she’s at least 18, yeah? Because I was told she’s an adult and it’s going to be really awkward if I’ve been gushing over her this whole time and it turns out she’s a minor.

“But you’re the avatar. Isn’t that cheating?” Ooh, echoes of Aang’s past here when the other kids wouldn’t let him play airball with them.

Damn, and there’s why. Korra just used more than one kind of bending in the match. Obviously she does have an unfair advantage. Well at least they’re giving her a chance to handicap herself!

It’s weird but I am loving this whole plotline. Like, it has the feel of a filler episode but it’s clearly important despite all the fluff. Tenzin and Korra butting heads is way more interesting than the dynamic Aang had with any of his masters. Even when Pakku was training him, it was less about him and Aang butting heads and more about him and Katara.

Ha! Tenzin getting all excited over Korra winning the match! And he noticed her using his teachings during the match too, so maybe he’ll amend his teaching style to be more flexible. I hope so, because I really didn’t want to dislike him long-term lol

8. Aw, I love this. Both Korra and Tenzin apologized to each other for their shortcomings. I’m glad they’re going to have a good relationship. I mean, could you imagine how awkward it would be if you didn’t get along with your past-life’s son? Lol

Oh no… am I detecting romantic story beats between Mako and Korra? I know she’s bisexual so there’s gotta be a girlfriend involved eventually but until we get to that point, are Mako and Korra going to be a thing? But he’s so broody and bland lol Maybe he’ll develop a personality before they start dating?

Concluding thoughts: That was a fantastic start! I love how much the story has grown up with its audience. The issues facing this show so far are organized crime and political unrest, plus a potential conspiracy involving the White Lotus. I’m glad they’re treating the audience like adults. It reminds me a bit of NATLA and Book 2 of ATLA.

So far the characters are great! Tenzin is interesting, flawed, and all-around three dimensional. Korra herself is so fascinating because I swear I see Aang’s childlike mannerisms in her still, even if she is more mature. It’s so cool to see a character I love inside of another character, knowing that this new character literally used to be the old character! I’m very excited to see if Korra ever communes with her past lives the way Aang did. If she talks to Aang I’m gonna die (in a good way).

I really love the setting too. Republic City feels like a period-piece city from a 1930s movie. It’s so cool to see things like bending in a more modern setting. The story seems to be shifting from straight fantasy to urban fantasy, and I’m here for it!

I don’t have much to theorize with yet. We don’t have a clear villain yet but I suspect it may be the White Lotus, perhaps working in tandem with corrupt Republic City leaders?

So far I love this show and I can’t wait to see more! Thanks for reading!

We know that upon his so called death he ascended to the spirit world, but I think it’s made pretty clear that the spirit world isn’t usually considered an afterlife for people that aren’t deceased avatars. At least I’m assuming it isn’t. Iroh when he’s bidding farewell to Korra in season 2 says he hopes to see her again in either this life or the next. That to me suggests there is an offscreen afterlife separate from the spirit world.

This is why I say that Iroh seems to be in this weird in between state. He did pass away in the mortal world, but he hasn’t fully moved on to wherever regular folks go to after death. And the fact that there are now spirit portals open means he could probably revisit the human world again.

From my understanding, in the last airbender aang couldn’t move his physical body while he was in the spirit world but in the legend of Korra it’s seen that Asami moved her body while the red lotus tried to kidnap her from the motel and she was in the spirit world talking to Zaheer. I’m very confused about that. Did the creators miss that, did they not care, or was it just different for Korra?

So, after my thread about his video on the Book 2 finale, & a few rocky episodes at the start of Book 3, I very narrowly decided to keep watching. He more-or-less reigned it in after that, so I haven't felt much need to complain about his complaining, but I swear his episode on Long Live The Queen is daring me to just try ignoring all of the bad takes. This is probably going to be disjointed because I'm just going to go through commenting on whatever I thought was particularly bad, but here goes:

He says he "maintains the opinion that bending another person's bending opens up a lot of fuckery with the magic system." WTF? He's still on about this? Bending is mystical fantasy martial arts. When someone throws a fireball or a boulder, it's effectively an extension of a punch or kick. Bending another person's bending is just grappling. It's an extension of the concept of grabbing someone's punch or kick & trying to turn it against them. Why is he so weird about this?

He goes on this rant about how the rest of the Red Lotus aren't real characters, they're just generic people with cool abilities that are extensions of Zaheer. Now, I get that Zaheer gets significantly the most speaking time to flesh out, but "could use more screentime for development" isn't the same as "not real characters." They all have distinct personalities & certain notable characteristics, like how Ghazan was clearly the most affected by his time in prison. He also does this "thought experiment" where he asks people to remember the names of Ming-Hua & P'li & just kind of guesses that "the majority of you couldn't remember both of their names," & like how is that a point? Setting aside that if you just discount anyone who doesn't fit your guess, of course you're going to get the result you want, a lot of people watch a lot of shows. They said the name of the creepy scientist in the last season of Arcane, & I immediately forgot it, does that somehow mean he's not a major character?

"Lin, police detective, finds a tracking dog & best friend of the person she's looking for & just says 'eat this & leave me alone.'" Yes, because if Naga could find Korra, she'd clearly be there instead of bothering Lin.

Then he goes on this very, very long rant about how he doesn't understand why people think Zaheer, or any airbender for that matter, can make a vacuum, & he obviously must just be making her breathe her own deoxygenated breath until she dies, & the whole time I'm thinking, "But this is just wrong, though. I hate to say this because it's become such a cliche, but....read the novels." Ordinarily, I just brush it off when he doesn't know something from the expanded universe because some things can be obscure, & you shouldn't really have to do a bunch of homework just to make a simple response to a specific show, but when he devotes so much time to one specific point & is basically lecturing people about how they all got it wrong, yeah I think it's officially time to do some research to make sure he's not just talking completely out of your ass. Like am I just supposed to ignore that every word of this is wrong, & he could know that with a bit of Googling? Because that hardly seems fair.

I'm very deliberately not going through every single minor complaint he has, but just consider this a blanket expression of irritation that he keeps complaining whenever the plot is even slightly convenient that it's "clunky writing," as if that never happened in Last Airbender. Hey, Overanalyzing Avatar, why did that teacher who was so strict about the rules relent on letting Aang keep his head scarf on? If she didn't, he would've had to reveal himself or, at the very least, try to get away without using any bending, bringing down a lot of attention on himself. Isn't that strangely convenient? Dare I say...clunky? Also, his complaints about the sand shark in general are basically just this meme.

And then, shortly after that, it was finally over. And I mean it felt exactly how I just made it sound. I was seriously considering putting it on double speed to get through it faster, but mercifully, I only had a couple seconds left until the credits. I know from experience with the thread I mentioned up top that, if anything, the comments are going to be even harsher critics than I was, but that's just as well because this episode honestly put me in no mood to mount any kind of "but there are also good things about Overanalyzing Avatar" defense right now. That was just really, really bad. I guess not quite as bad as it was during Book 2, though of course he compared them at one point, & that just makes it stand out more that he's finding these inconsequential nitpicks & pointless hills to die on in some of the best material the show has to offer. I also know from experience there's probably going to be at least one person like "you're just mad he has a different opinion than you," & when the opinion is nonsensical enough, yeah. Don't act like people don't do the same when someone criticizes Last Airbender because I finally have an example of what happens when someone is willing to make the same kind of unhinged take about a Last Airbender episode. Spoiler alert, people did not like it.

Some of you may have seen that recent post of some fanart of Korra and Kuvira making out in the spirit world. That right there made me realize that quite a few people ship our heroine with this tyrant, who in the time that scene in the spirit world takes place just killed Korra’s soon to be girlfriend’s dad like 5 minutes ago, and has a pretty long list of other crimes too. So yeah, pretty icky.

But after mulling it over, I think I can kinda see why some would ship it, even if I fundamentally disagree with it. Thanks to the lesson Korra learns about how the past villains were misguided people who for the most part believed they were doing good, she does kinda develop a soft spot for Kuvira in the process, and wants to reason with her. There’s also the fact that Korra sees a bit of herself in Kuvira, even pulling the we’re not so different you and I card when they’re alone in the spirit world after Korra just saved her life, and eventually gets her to see reason.

So in short, seeing a character help another character out of a dark place seems pretty romantic to these people. It could also be because they’re both gorgeous woman. I almost forgot to mention that part. lol

I feel like the airbenders suddenly returning with Harmonic Convergence acting as the Macguffin really undermined the effects of the Air Nomad Genocide.

It just feels as if the writers wanted to introduce an air bending villain and they had no other way to do it, so they just slapped the "there was a shift in the spiritual energy of the universe" band aid on it and called it a day.

I thought it was weird when I first watched the show two years ago and I still think it's weird right now.

Maybe it would have been better if Tenzin's descendants repopulated the air nation over a span of centuries.

Started watching TLOK and just finished the The Beginnings, so sorry if this is a dumb question lol. If the lion turtles never gave anyone else to ability to bend, does that just mean they just learned from the sky bison, badger moles, etc.? But how would it be passed onto their children?

Maybe some of you remember the character sheets of my LoK OC Taro from several month ago. I did some adjustments in this fanart such as a slightly different hairstyle and a little bit darker skin. So allegedly the creators themselves have said that airbenders know techniques to regulate their body temperatures when they’re in colder climates. But someone like Pema isn’t an airbender like her husband and kids. So why isn’t she freezing her ass off when they visit everyone at the South Pole? All she’s wearing is typical air nomad clothes.
