The Lagotto Romagnolo is an Italian breed of dog. It originates in the marshlands of the Delta del Po in the eastern part of the Romagna sub-region of central Italy. The name derives from Romagnol: Can Lagòt, meaning "water dog". Its traditional function was as a gundog, specifically a water retriever; since the drainage of large areas of wetland habitat in its area of origin, it is now more often used to hunt for truffles.

(Posting for my mother in law but we watch her Lagotto pretty often)
Wondering if anyone has dealt with this or has any advice! My mother in law has a 7ish year old Lagotto (male) who eats everything! He will eat a sock if it’s in the ground, a napkin someone dropped on the sidewalk, a cigarette butt, a block of butter, wood, hair scrunchies…etc. he licks the carpet/ground endlessly when he’s laying down looking for crumbs, you get the point… He was brought to the vet after she saw him eat a sock and they ended up finding 4 socks and 2 hair scrunchies in his stomach.
The past while he has been eating the ends of joints that people discard on the sidewalk/trail and ends up getting high. He is also super gassy/stinky despite being on a relatively strict diet for dogs with sensitive stomachs. Aside from all that, he is very well trained in all other aspects, great with kids, doesn’t get into any other trouble, and a great cuddler.
Had anyone had anything similar with theirs? Or have any advice/ideas so he isn’t eating everything? Thanks in advance :-)
Hey there, WE have a female Lagotto puppy for about 8 weeks now (she is 16 weeks now). She is a very energetic and a smart girl and we have quite a hard time to train her well.
She is our first dog and we worked with a local dog trainer from day one.
All in all she is doing very well, learns very quick and we start to understand how she works ;)
Some days after she moved in she swallowed a button from a blanket in our bed which is why we needed to see the vet. We then realized our problem when she not only threw up the button but some small Rocks as well. She is chewing and swallowing almost everything when walking outside. Because of this we ended up putting a muzzle in so she might not hurt herself eating some dangerous stuff.
I know this might be normal puppy behaviour but maybe you Lagotti guys can calm me down and tell about your puppy experiences and if this behaviour will geht better when teething ( or something else) ist done.
Regards Tobi
I like to desensitize Mali with different objects and surroundings, today I put a “shower cap” on him. I was unpacking suitcase and found a pair of “plastic shoes” (which they give you at the airport when you need to scan your shoes) and thought why not put it on him. He did really well.
Take care of your dogs guys, they really should not eat things from the floor.. he got an infusion with antibiotics and needs to rest now.
Luna is two. Her hair was long and straggly and needed a lot of brushing. It had been 4 months since her last grooming. Not the true lagotto look, but she is certainly clean, cute, and loved! ❤️
Hi any recommendations on breeders? My boyfriend and I would like a puppy next summer! Also if anyone has any tips and tricks or heads up on getting all Lagotto please share!
We are working on my grooming skills.
We're trying to decide which meds to put our puppy on. I worry with Lagotto being prone to neurological disorders and have heard this breed are sensitive to meds. So I'm curious if any of your pups have had reactions and to which meds.
Hi all,
First post on Reddit, hopefully it goes by the book.
Meet our freshly arrived family member! He has been with me and my wife for four days now, so everything is still very new. For us and for him.
He is very energetic and likes to chew and bite on basically everything. We try to distract him with toys to avoid damage to any furniture, but it is proving to be very hard. He's also what you would call a land shark, so he will try to get you by the ankles and hands when playing with him.
We have noticed that he has a hard time relaxing and sleeping, even though we try to train his energy by playing and training. So far he has slept fine through the night, but during the day we don't think he's getting enough rest. We have gotten him a crate and a bed, but he sees both as toys to bite and play roughhouse with, not as calm resting spots.
Is this just a puppy thing? Or are we failing at something?
Thanks a lot :)

My first ever reddit post! Here’s hoping I do this right.
I have put a deposit down on a Lagotto puppy, and need to make a final decision by end of this week. I’ve met the pups who are a dream, and visited the breeder and seen the mother and grandmother dogs.
I am very aware they aren’t just cute dogs and they require extensive training, socialisation, desensitising to sounds and feelings etc.
However the more I read into the breed, the more I see about anxiety, anger and snappiness, inability to adapt to change or new kids. I’m starting to get cold feet and worry that I will end up with a dog that isn’t the right fit.
About me: I WFH 2 days a week, partner has altering start times for work. Currently at a home with a backyard but looking to move to an apartment in near future which may not have a backyard.
I guess I am looking for honesty. I want to know the good, the bad, the ugly and unspoken to make sure I am making the best decision for the puppy to go to the right home.
Looking for some advice regarding our (approx) 3year old female LR. We adopted our girl about 6 months ago. She spend the first year of her life at a kennel in Italy, then moved to a breeder in North America. She was with that breeder for another year and had one litter of puppies. After having the puppies the breeder discovered that she had a genetic condition (dew claw related, nothing serious) and did not want to breed her again, so we adopted her.
She is a sweet girl and very gentle, but quite nervous, especially of men. These issues seem to be getting worse as she settles in and gets more attached to me (female owner).
I worry she is starting to show some signs of fear aggression. We try to stimulate her as much as possible, she gets at least two walks (2.5 km each) a day as well as some fetch or training. On days when I have to go into the office (3 days per week) my mother in law takes her to their farm where she gets to romp around with two other dogs and go for lots of walks.
I don't know if anyone else has experienced this kind of behaviour with their LR, or if it a case of not being stimulated enough mentally? I allow her to do lots of sniffing on her walks while practicing recall, and heel at different times.
Looking for advice as I don't want to put her or any visitors to our house in an anxiety causing situation.
Today, for the 3rd time my Lagotto behaved abnormally.
The first time, a month and a half ago, when we came back from a walk our dog was strangely calm. Lying on the ground as often so we didn't notice anything. Usually when we vacuum he starts running everywhere, this time, nothing. When it was time to feed him, very little reaction. It was when he got up that we noticed that something was wrong. His head and body were shaking and he had trouble standing. He was walking crookedly. I picked him up and his head fell back, his eyes closed. Needless to say, we were terrified. We drove to the nearest vet clinic and he cried the whole way.We left him under observation overnight at the clinic and the next day everything was back to normal. Blood level, nothing abnormal. The vet thinks he ate something toxic during the walk but nothing specific.
Last week, same thing but this time we called the vet who told us that knowing the same symptoms and with the results from last time, no worries, just let him rest. in the evening, everything was back to normal.
Today it happened again. We took him to another vet who did a blood test, nothing abnormal and since it's the 3rd time, we're going to have him have a brain scan and a heart ultrasound. The veterinarian found a cardiac arrhythmia and suggests we go further into the tests.
We obviously read a lot of things on the internet in panic and are rather worried.
Anyone here experienced the same issues ?
