What Are Your Thoughts on Ha-Borer (The Arbitrator)?

Ha-Borer

Hey Israeli Redditors and fans of Israeli TV!

I’ve heard that Ha-Borer (The Arbitrator) was a huge phenomenon in Israel when it aired from 2007-2014*.*
It seems like it really captured people’s attention with its portrayal of Israel's underworld and family dynamics as it has up to 4 seasons. I am deeply in love with the Vietnamese version of it, Nguoi Phan Xu with the main actor who represented Yehuda Levi.

For those who were around when it aired, how big was it really? Was it the kind of show everyone was talking about? Did it influence Israeli pop culture or lead to more shows like it? Also, how was it viewed across different generations in Israel?

I'd love to hear any insights on just how much of an impact Ha-Borer had on the TV scene for you guys and im wondering if I could watch it anywhere now? can't really find sites as they run out of the contract for the movie since it was a while ago.
Thanks and much love!

Does Haaretz differ significantly between English and Hebrew?

Asking because my father has a Haaretz subscription and treats it like the best center left media from Israel (he only reads the Hebrew version), but then when I see the criticism of Haaretz in the sub I've only seen articles in English. Plz shed light on this thanks.

Why I support Israel (Original Content)

I was chatting with someone who said Israel should not exist, and after discussing it with her I realized she didn't know some of the basics about Israel. So I wrote this, a short summary. Let me know what you think.

Let me know what you guys think.

  1. In 1948, Britain and the United Nations decided to partition Mandatory Palestine, which was owned by Britain at the time, into two parts. The Jewish part and the Arab part.

  2. At the time, Jews were 33% of the population, Muslims were about 55%, and Christians were about 10%.

  3. The Jewish partition had a majority of Jews living in it. Non-Jews would get full citizenship.

  4. Jews would get 55% of the land despite being only 33% of the population, which many are critical of. But much of Israel is unusable desert. Estimates believe of the usable land, the Jewish partition would be only 20-30%, and the Arab partition would be 70-80%. Non jews under the Jewish partition would receive full citizenship.

  5. Israel accepted the legally created partition plan, and the Arab nations rejected it, attacking Israel in a genocidal war with a stated intent to kill all the Jews in the country.

  6. Israel won, and as a result, some Palestinians were expelled from their homes, some fled, some left to allow the Arab nations to attack, and many others who decided to stay became Israeli citizens. A far better fate than the Jews would have received had they lost the war.

  7. Many say the violence did not start on October 7. This is true, the violence actually began in 1920 in the “Palestine Riots” and subsequent riots in 1921 and 1929, where almost 100 Jewish civilians were murdered by local Arabs and hundreds more were injured. This was the first record of violence between the two parties.

  8. Palestinians were offered their own state five times: in 1947, in 2000, in 2001, in 2007, and in 2014. Each time they rejected it.

  9. Israel has shown a great willingness to trade land for peace, doing so successfully with Jordan and Egypt, with whom they have good relationships today. In fact, Israel provides water to Jordan as part of the peace deal. Israel has never broken the peace treaty with Jordan or Egypt.

  10. On October 7 Hamas and some Palestinian civilians murdered 1,200 Israelis, including women children and the elderly. Ghazi Hamad, a Senior Hamas official stated that Hamas would repeat October 7th again and again and again until Israel was destroyed. Israel began a war to remove Hamas from power in Gaza in order to prevent these promised future murders of Israelis.

  11. Israel is not perfect, and a number of critiques against Israel are legitimate, one of which is that Israel does not show appropriate restraint when attacked. While this fact can be debated, it’s obvious that Israel only seeks conflict with those that attempt to murder Israelis, specifically Hamas, Hezbollah, and Iran. Those that do not try to murder Israelis generally have peace with Israel. The desire of these groups to murder Israelis in order to eventually destroy Israel is the root cause of all the violence in the region.

Extra Points:

Israel is not a white country: The idea that Israel is a white colonial project is incorrect as half of Israeli Jews are not white. Approximately 50% of Israelis identify as Mizrahi Jews, who are descendants of Jewish communities from Middle Eastern and North African countries.

Many Mizrahi Jews fled or were expelled from Arab countries following the establishment of Israel in 1948. This mass migration was driven by rising antisemitism, discrimination, and violence, including pogroms—violent riots against Jewish communities. In countries like Iraq, Egypt, and Yemen, Jews faced harsh restrictions and social ostracism, often living as second-class citizens. For instance, in Iraq, anti-Jewish riots in 1941, known as the Farhud, led to 180 deaths and many injuries among the Jewish population.

Nazi Ties: In 1941, Haj Amin al-Hussein, Grand Mufti of Mandatory Palestine, met with Adolf Hitler in Berlin and expressed his support for the Nazi regime. During the meeting, he sought Hitler's assistance in preventing Jewish immigration to Palestine and proposed extending the Nazi "Final Solution" to the Middle East. Al-Husseini also requested Hitler's help in eliminating Jews in the Arab world, aligning himself with the Nazi goal of exterminating Jews.

Genocide The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is not a genocide because genocide involves the intent to completely destroy a specific group. Israel's military actions primarily target militant groups like Hamas, rather than aiming to exterminate the Palestinian people. While the conflict causes significant civilian casualties, it is driven by territorial and security concerns, not a systematic campaign to eliminate Palestinians. Recent cases at the ICC include Darfur and Myanmar, which were found not to be genocides despite situations far worse than the one in Gaza.

Gaza Life Before October 7: Gaza has a 45-kilometer white sand beach. Before October 7, Palestinians from Gaza frequently crossed over to Israel to work or receive medical care. Before October 7, Gaza had bustling markets, restaurants, and recreational activities. Before Hamas was democratically elected, there was a limited embargo on Gaza to prevent weapons from being imported. After Hamas was elected, which has a stated mission of destroying Israel, the embargo intensified.

Britain Gaining Control: Britain gained control of Mandatory Palestine after World War I, following the defeat of the Ottoman Empire, which had allied with Germany.

Treating Palestinians: Israeli hospitals play a significant role in providing medical care to Palestinians, even amid conflict. Thousands of Palestinians are treated annually in Israeli facilities, particularly for specialized medical needs. One prominent organization, Save a Child's Heart (SACH), focuses on offering life-saving heart surgeries to children from various countries, including many Palestinian children. Since its establishment, SACH has treated thousands of children and trained Palestinian doctors, enhancing local medical expertise.

What will it take for Likkud party to crash?

Currently they get about 23 seats in recent polls, about a third lower than theirs current 32. I consider this a lower bound and assume that they'll get no less than 27 seats if the election was today.

What will it take for people to lose confidence in that party to the extend of a real crash, like less than 20 seats in the election?

Aliyah help

Hi everyone! I'm a 21 year old from the uk who's planning on making aliyah after I finish my degree in cybersecurity (I'll be 23 by then). My hebrew isn't amazing but I'm currently working on it. I want to get ahead of the curve and make sure I'm set with a plan by the time I'm finished but I'm really not sure where to start. I'd be exempt from the army by the time I'd make aliyah but I don't mind volunteering if it'll help me job wise.

I'd really appreciate help because I'm going in relatively blind.

Much appreciated

Does the IDF crack down on soldiers who take pictures of themselves in Lebanese or Gazan female clothing?

I just came across this on Twitter

https://x.com/ytirawi/status/1851891775369072680?t=OGMd-skZPiQvX0hkqFt8eQ&s=19

People can call Tirawi a propagandist all they want, which he is, but these pictures do exist. Why isn't the IDF cracking down on these morons ? I've heard hypothesis that it's because they are afraid of far right backlash like in Sdei Teiman. Does anybody have any insider knowledge

This is not only despicable, but also embarrassing behavior by all account. On top of all the horrors that this war has brought to everyone in the region. Also, as a conservative jew who is aspiring to reach a Torah lifestyle and respect mitzvos, I find this kind of degeneracy an absolute hilul Hashem. I know that not all far rightists are daatim, but a lot are, or at least traditional Mizrahi. Don't they find this shit embarrassing?

Tl:Dr 1) does anyone know why the IDF hasn't cracked down on this yet? 2) don't kahanists & co. realize how much of a hilul h' this is?

Why does Israel keep playing Iran's game?

Isn't it time to change the rules? Any attack from an Iran proxy should be deemed to constitute an attack from Iran and the response should be to hit Iran back directly.

On israeli antizionists

I came across the book "Jewish History, Jewish Religion: The Weight of Three Thousand Years" written by israel shahak a long time ago. Ever since then, I have started devouring antizionist literature written by israeli intellectuals Gideon Levy, Shlomo Sand, Avi shlaim, Amos Goldberg, Miko Peled etc. How can they write long articles and books questioning the legitimacy of the state of Israel while holding an israeli passport?

W-8BEN Form Advice

Hi! I live in Israel (Israeli citizen) and I have a bank account in the US which I use for when I visit the country and to pay for US based services etc. I've had this account for over 20 years and it comes with a debit card. Recently my bank asked me to fill out a W-8BEN form (Certificate of Foreign Status of Beneficial Owner for US Tax withholding). I don't have stocks or derive dividends from the US and I am not an American citizen. Sometimes I get Zelle transfers on that account because it's convenient but in total I don't think I get more than $2000 a year that way. Now I have to fill out this form and the Bank wants a "Written explanation for US address." What should I put in there? Obviously, I'd like to avoid any withholding of money sent to the account otherwise, what's the point? Thanks for any advice!

Are the Iranians letting their pride suck them into a losing war?

As a non-jihadist non-middle easterner, I don’t quite get their mindset. Part of becoming emotionally mature is to swallow humiliation and learn from it, not double down on the actions that caused it, at least that is what I have learned. Maybe I’m wrong, but it seems like the Iranians are so prideful that all they know how to do is double down and compound their shame. I saw something in the New York Times that they are ‘even’ because there have been two Israeli attacks at Iran and two Iranian attacks on Israel. Attacking a third time let them come out ahead. Bro, that is the dumbest logic imaginable.
