Career pivot advice

I work in the HR tech space and have 7 years of client facing experience, mainly as an Implementation Manager. While I love engaging with the problems my company helps solve (fair pay, DE&I metrics, analyzing performance reviews), I am realizing I no longer enjoy the actual implementation of SaaS technology. While working, I am pursuing an online Masters in IO-Psychology with the hope of using it to pivot to a role that focuses on some of these topics but in-house - for example: talent management, performance management, workplace assessments/culture etc. So I am hoping to use my HR client / HR field exposure plus hard skills learned in the degree to make this transition ideally to a Senior IC role (my current level).

Does this desired pivot sound realistic? Am I on the right track? I welcome any feedback and and advice on how to best position myself for this move!

positions/ internships to break into the industry as senior/post grad w only bachelor’s?

so i’m currently a senior about to graduate this may with a bachelor’s of science in psychology. I am currently applying to graduate school programs for industrial organizational psychology, and hope to start fall of 2025. That being said, after graduation i hope to attain a summer internship or position that relates to the field and has decent pay for what i’ve got, not expecting something crazy, but just the best i can do for where im at right now. As i start to look into applying where i can, i was wondering what position titles i should be on the lookout for in order to break my way into the industry? also open to courses or certifications i can take post grad to make myself more competitive.

Industrial and Organizational Psychology Presentation

Hey Everyone,

My name is Joe and I'm a senior within the CSU system and have an assignment to do a presentation on the field of IO Psychology. As this is a very new field to me, I was hoping to ask some questions about the field itself and the experiences of the people of within it. Those being:

What is a typical workday for you?

What things do you wish you knew prior to deciding this career?

What are some of the advantages, as well as challenges, of careers in this field?

How does IO Psychology compare to other occupations within the overall field of psychology, regarding their similarity and differences.

How has the field developed over the previous couple of years, and how might it be expected to evolve?

What types of qualities and interests are important for someone to be a great IO psychologist?

And finally: Why is this field so important within our workforce today?

Answers to any of these questions would be highly appreciated!

Thank you :)

Any People Analysts here?

TLDR; anyone working on anything cool in the people/talent/hr/organizational analytics space? Keep company details to an abstraction of course.

I kept playing with hr data until I accidentally landed in a role meant for getting the PA function up and running at a company a few years ago. Since I started, I kept researching ways to leverage best practices to make this place more data informed. However, I think I’m coming towards the end of initial roadmap for this place and now I’m thinking of what phase 2 can look like.

I’d love to know if have any people analysts here and any exciting projects they’re working on or launched. I found the LinkedIn PA space to be full of shit from the same few influencers with zero to minimal hr, psychology, or people analytics experience so I’m trying to branch out to other places.

Need help with organisational psychology career. Any advice?

I completed my organisation psychology with university of Leeds last year and have been working as an HR compliance administrator. My work is mainly about making people disclosure and barring service compliant in the United Kingdom.

I am an international student with one years of visa left, and I feel very lost as to what to do . My job as of now is very boring and completely remote and gives me no satisfaction or growth.

I’m afraid that I have come to the point where I feel like maybe organisation Psychology was not the right move. While studying, the possibilities seemed endless, but now I’m not sure if that is what reality is. The job market seems to be full of HR roles and as a fresher, they’re all administrative and boring role stuck with excel sheets and emails.

I want to do more with my life and more with my career, but I just don’t know where to start. I want to skill and maybe learn more or study more, but I don’t understand which might be the best move for me since I’m not very independent financially.

Can anyone suggest what’s a lucrative move to do with my degree?

Expanding norm data

Looking to expand norm data for a work culture diagnostic tool.

The norm data at the moment is roughly about 50% UK, 40% US, and 10% from other countries.

In short, the tool quantifies and provides a benchmark for how much employee health is influenced by the work culture. It also identifies the key drivers of the work culture.

This allows organisations to estimates the impact of culture and wellbeing initiatives and to confidently target the drivers that influence employees behaviour, productivity, and health. The tool is very useful for diverse organisations, teams working remotely, and person centric companies.

Please let me know if you’d be interested to participate. Both individual employees and organisations are welcome.

Thanks for reading.

Grad School Q&A Mega-Thread

Please use this thread for questions about grad school or internships.

* Please start your search at SIOP.org , it contains lots of great information and many questions can be answered by searching there first.

* Next, please search the Wiki, as there are some very great community generated posts saved here.

* If you still can't find an answer to your question, please search the previously submitted posts or the post on the grad school Q&A. Subscribers of /r/iopsychology have provided lots of information about these topics, and your questions may have already been answered.

If your question hasn't been posted, please post it on the grad school Q&A thread. Other posts outside of the Q&A thread will be deleted.

The readers of this subreddit have made it clear that they don't want the subreddit clogged up with posts about grad school. Don't get the wrong idea - we're glad you're here and that you're interested in IO, but please do observe the rules so that you can get answers to your questions AND enjoy the interesting IO articles and content.

By the way, those of you who are currently trudging through or have finished grad school, that means that you have to occasionally offer suggestions and advice to those who post on this thread. That's the only way that we can keep these grad school-related posts in one central location. If people aren't getting their questions answered here, they post to the subreddit instead of the thread. So, in short, let's all do our part in this.

Thanks!

What are some of the key points you hit in your 'What do I/O psychologists think about leadership" answer?

In the past I've been in settings where I need to share my answer to questions about personality, change, assessments and organizational development, less likely to get pulled into defining conversations on leadership, unless it's been tactical on developing specific skills. However, I've had different work come my way lately and find I'm answering the umbrella question "So, what do I/O psychologists think about leadership then?" more often.

If you answer this questions frequently, what are some of the key points? Are you pretty much just summarizing the Peter Northouse or Hogan and Kaiser 'What do we know about leadership?"

MBA with a bachelors in psych

Hey guys! I’m looking for some advice in my educational journey. I’m really interested in I/O psychology but there are no colleges in my area who offer a masters degree in it. I was looking into getting an MBA to complement my bachelors in Psychology but not sure if it would be useful/helpful. Colorado State also offers an online masters in I/O but I’m not sure if that would be “acceptable” when it comes to searching for jobs. Any advice would be appreciated :) I’ve been stressing so much about it

What was your Undergraduate degree?

I’m going back to school and I made the decision to go for a BS in I/O psych from a csu vs getting a BA in psych from a uc because I thought I’d make better connections that way since it’s a specific program. I’m wondering though how many other people took this route as well before their masters. Does it really matter at all if I get a BS in I/O before a graduate degree?

Measuring culture and wellbeing

How do you measure culture and wellbeing at your workplace?

I know there are many tools out there but one thing that I’ve noticed is how difficult it is to track the ROI on things like wellbeing initiatives, EDI etc

How do you measure and track your organisational culture and wellbeing to ensure that your selected intervention had a sustainable measurable impact?

Narcissism from IO perspective?

Narcissistic traits of a leader are kind of good for the overall productivity of an organization or a business.

But is there any research about how narcissism in leaders or among employees affects other aspects, like emotional well-being in a workplace, conflicts, etc.?

How do you measure impact?

I'm thinking about going into a more strategic route and lead leadership development for a company. If you're working in the area, would you like to share how do you measure business impact of your programs? I'm finding quite hard to balance business politics vs my analytical approach in offering a reliable and valuable asset. Thank you!

Lost right now in my career

So, I got some bad news from [xxx] at work, and it feels like I've hit a major roadblock in my career. I've always been a planner, so I had this whole plan for my job, my life, and everything. My big goal was to get promoted and then go overseas for my master's degree, but now it seems like that's not gonna happen anytime soon because of this setback. I've been doing consulting work at this company for almost two and a half years. If I wait for the next promotion cycle, I'll have been here for three years plus. I'm not sure if I should just quit, find a senior role somewhere else work for 6 months then quit, and do my master's degree, or what. I'm feeling pretty lost right now.

The main reason I wanted a senior role before my master is so that I can have better opportunities of landing a job in the overseas (I am currently in an SEA country, planning to go to EUR, UK or Canada)

Another thing on my mind is that, since I have been in the business for almost 3 years, I dont know if transitioning to clinical paycholpgy is a good idea as I don't have any research background nor reference related to the clinical side.

Just me super lost now...Was hoping to get some advice as one of the master I am planning is IO too...just that in the SEA...IO jobs is like super vague....

Interesting question regarding I/O

Hello everyone. This will be something a bit off/weird, but I am in multiple I-O psych discords and decided to take to asking here first before I hit up those. Me and some friends have been creating an indie animation project for a few months now, and I was wondering how I could tie in I-O psych with that. This isn’t a necessity for me because I am very interested in other areas of I-O, but I just wanted to see if I could connect the two in some way. I know there are HR positions and such at like amazon prime, netflix, etc where multiple indie projects have reached such as hasbin hotel, digital circus, etc. It’s the golden age for these kind of things and my team and I have a very, VERY good idea and we are all creative talents. Please excuse me for the obscure and weird post, but I have no idea where else to go in regard to connecting these two (besides maybe the discords). Again, it’s not the end of the world if I can’t connect them because i’m still interested in both things (indie animation project and I-O psych) separately as well. I understand if nobody has any damn idea what this all means and how they could even begin to connect.

If info is needed: Last year of undergrad majoring in psych and taking organizational classes. Will be setting up an internship in this coming summer. Can be into any HR positions, people analytics, etc.

Please keep in mind that this me opening up a bit, so I apologize if trying to connect these two worlds is a bit odd, but I know I-O is very broad. Thank you.

Consumer vs Organizational Psychology

Hi! I’m currently in the process of applying for a Master’s program and focuses on both organizational and consumer psychology, but after a semester you choose whether you want to focus more on one versus the other.

i’m leaning more towards organizational psychology emphasis to focus more on employee behavior/satisfaction, but was wondering if anyone has background or works in consumer psychology and can offer any insight into the work that you do, because i still am interested in this as well. whatever i choose will directly dictate which career path i go down so i want to make sure i make the correct decision! TYIA!!!!

Looking for Advice on Starting a Career in Organization Development

I just finished my Master’s in Industrial/Organizational Psychology about a month ago, and now I’m trying to get my foot in the door as an Organization Development specialist.

I’d love to hear from anyone who’s been in OD or has experience in this field. What advice do you have for someone just starting out? Are there any important skills or certifications I should focus on? How did you get your first OD job?

Any advice or tips would be super helpful! Thanks in advance!

Most valuable course you’ve taken in IOPsych?

Curious - what’s been the most valuable or most interesting course you’ve taken in I/O? And why? 👀

If you can share the institution the course was at too, that would be great!

(Context: I have a graduate degree in adult education, work in HR/L&D, and curious about taking a course or two in I/O as I consider whether I want to pursue a master’s.)
